Andreea is such a skilled carver and an excellent teacher. Her explanations are both explicit and very easy to follow, and the end result is lovely. Thank you, Zed, for featureing her in such a thorough video.
i just realized that I haven't been taking off enough material on the back of the spoon with the axe. I always have too much back where the bowl meets the handle, and have too much knife work. I see how Andrea starts with the axe much higher than I have been doing. (0:20:50). Thank you for that!
Awesome to hear how this video helped with your carving process, wishing you a lovely year ahead and I have more videos planned for the coming weeks and months that you'll find useful. Take care ~Peace~
Hi Matty, I sincerely appreciate your kind words and to hear this video helped you in your carving journey. Stay well my friend and happy carving ~Peace~
Very nice video. Funny to see such large tools used for such a small spoon. Clearly it works out well, however, I think I would have used a smaller knife for better control ( less risk of cutting myself )
@@jlwhaley835 Spalting is a bit tricky to do yourself as it is a process that occurs naturally, however I will try to film a video on that at some point
Zed I recognise Debra's house as for spoon it's tudor shaped like what crew on Mary Rose used I made a few bit bigger and same size from hawthorn I love that wood full of knots and challenging to carve has a cream and pink colour to it when seasoned I put vegetable cooking oil in it makes it darker and protects it and I use bit of deer antler to burnish it thanks to Debra's idea baking spoons 👍🇬🇧🦊🐾
Hi John, appreciate the heads up on the design being inspired by one from the Mary Rose, gives me something to read up and geek out on! Stay blessed my man and many thanks for watching ~Peace~

Worth checking out this store as they also sell samples (btw I do have a future video planned on all things milk paint related) - oldfashionedmilkpaint.co.uk/
Why would one avoid the knot? I think they add so much character and actually find them visually appealing. Do they weaken the finished product? Are there any circumstances where a knot being left in could actually work out well? Thank you.
In most cases you remove the knot because when it dries it increases the chances of the wood splitting. You can include a knot in a the part of the spoon where it may not potentially split, such as the handle, even then you should err on the side of caution ~Peace~
Those who wonder about the axe and did not catch the maker: it is soulwood creations / Peter Kovacs. And this is - again - a wonderful video. @ZedOutdoors, Your dedication to documenting the craft is amazing (you know Eugenio Monesma's videos? Yours are more hands on, but nevertheless documentation of craft), and Andreea explains her process very well.
Hi Johannes, I sincerely appreciate your kind words and indeed, Andreea is a great teacher on and off video. Reg Eugenio Monesma, I literally only discovered him last year after a friend shared one of his videos with me on Facebook. Ever since then, I have been hooked on his videos and his filming/videography is on another level that I can only aspire to. Appreciate your comment and stay blessed my friend ~Peace~

Hey great video. Thanks for sharing. Can you tell me what type/brand of axe was used in the video. I’m looking at picking one up soon. Thanks
Appreciate the kind words and the axe was made by the talented - soulwoodcreations.com

You can most definitely use a smaller knife, but a slightly larger knife allows you to take longer cuts ~Peace~

Thank you kindly ~Peace~
Excellent video, thank you! Can you tell us how, she salted the wood? I would like to give it a try. Thanks again
Appreciate you watching and for your kind words thank you. I'm not sure what you mean by salting the wood? ~Peace~

What brand is the knife? Where can I order? Thank you.
The knife is by the talented Peter Kovacs, here is his website - soulwoodcreations.com
I'm sure you would find it easier using a shorter bladed knife
There's no right or wrong with length of blade, this length works for Andreea so it's what she uses ~Peace~
@Zedoutdoors I agree there is no right or wrong but I wouldn't peel a potato with a sword just a personal preference
