I'll never forget Pete Townshend saying in an interview that when he turned around on stage, it was like seeing an octopus behind the drumkit, as arms were flying everywhere. :D
Each member of the Who was completely necessary to the function of the whole from 71-74. Each member was at the top of their game. It was a remarkable period for them and for rock. Won't Get Fooled Again is my all-time favorite rock song. Period. As relevant today as 50 years ago.
This album is the most complete representation of The Who in my opinion. 63 years old here and grinning from ear to ear watching the reactions, love it!
When a song moves you to joyous laughter, you know it's special. Loved. loved, loved the honest reaction. This is The Who hitting on all cylinders. Power and finesse.
Seeing them do this live at the Fillmore West in San Francisco was awesome. Keith Moon was one of the greatest drummers I've ever seen.... and Pete with his windmill arm action and Roger twirling the microphone over his head like a lasso while John stood stoically at the side casually playing the bass. They were so much fun to see live.
Saw The Who at Swansea City football ground in 1976. Marvellous set with a big chunk of Tommy in the middle. They ended with this, lasers and everything. Superb performance
greatest rock song ever. if you want to send chills up your spine, watch The Who perform this song at Madison Square Garden in 2001 at the concert for new York after 9/11. the audience was made up of NYC first responders and family and the energy was unbelievable. it was a war cry
Keith Moon is still the king ,RIP. John Entwhisle, RIP, the Who's unsung hero. This song is so pleasantly weird, never gets old, the weird keyboards turn it from good to great. Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey, on the mark as always. Epic. Kel's joy in hearing it for first time was amazing. Her recollection of religious people saying rock was " Satanic Music", rings true, I was in a church like that myself, once upon a time. It isn't the music style that causes " sin ", it is what is in the heart, as experience taught me later. Rock on!
Won't Get Fooled Again is my favourite song of all time a true master class in rock. Seen The Who live many times and this song live makes the hairs on your neck stand up. Daltrey, Entwistle, Townshend and Moon are at their finest on the Who's Next Album.
A fellow Canadian here Kel...I was allowed to listen to these bands although my parents absolutely HATED them. My older brother wanted to go to Woodstock, but as he was 17 they didn't let him go. Quick story about this song. In grade 9 I had a young English teacher and one of our projects was to analyze the lyrics to a favourite song. I chose this one. As lyrics weren't readily available in those days, my mother and I listened to this song and she marked them down in shorthand and then put them into long hand for me. As she detested every minute of the music, it just shows her love for her son. RIP Mom.
Hi John. I rank The Who as the 3rd greatest Rock band ever: #1. The Beatles #2. The Rolling Stones #3. The Who #4. Led Zeppelin #5. Chicago (tie) The Beach Boys (tie) Queen (tie)
When I saw them live in the early 80s, the part at 7:50 was accompanied by a beautiful film on the big screen comprised of a montage of photographs of each original band member from infancy to the present and also the evolution and history of the band. When the drums return, the image dissolved from Keith Moon to the present drummer Kenny Jones and then we saw his life in pictures up until he joined the band. It was an incredible, emotional moment. This Who performance video contains the film interlude at 6: 35. ruclips.net/video/X0Sd18NzYck/видео.html
Love your reaction video guys and this one really takes me back to great times growing up in 🇨🇦. We were rockin up there and huge Who fans too. Not everybody’s parents were like Kel’s LOL.
I also love Pete’s guitar tone on this and subsequent Who recordings. While he used a Gibson Les Paul live during that period, in the studio he used a Gretsch Chet Akins Country Gentleman guitar, paired with an optical volume pedal and a Fender 5E7 Bandmaster amplifier. I suggest looking up the isolated guitar track and you can listen to Pete really shred. Also check out the TV series Classic Albums. They featured Who’s Next and it’s interesting to hear the demo Pete made for this song. It was very basic drums, bass and vocals, but it laid out his vision for it. Then, the individual members of the band took their parts and made them their own. It’s a great arrangement- no one trying to be flashier than the others, but each shining equally.
I've already got my front row center seat for The Who at Fenway Park on Sept 13, 2019!!!!!!!!! Not sure if you're aware of this, but The Who is currently recording a new album. Roger Daltrey says, in his opinion, the new album is their best since Quadrophenia! I've only heard one song off the new album so far called "Hero of Ground Zero". It is classic Who! I can't wait for the new album to be released!!!! BTW, when The Who performed the new song at Wembley Stadium earlier this week....Pete was wearing a boiler-maker suit.....just like the old days!!!!!
I’m 42. The first time I remember hearing this song I was in high school in 1992 and it was on the radio..... I remember feeling like I could run through a brick wall after hearing it! I‘ve since seen The Who live in Cleveland twice, in 1996 for their Quadrophenia tour and in 2000 for their From The Bush To The World tour. Both times with original bassist John Entwistle before he sadly passed away in 2002, and with still current drummer Zack Starkey, Ringo Starr’s son. To have seen them play Won’t Get Fooled Again live was a lifelong memory I will cherish forever. If you can find it on the internet (it’s hard to find online because the publishing company takes it down whenever it pops up), or if you just buy the Concert for New York City from October 2001 (benefit for the 9/11 first responders) The Who tore the house down. They owned it, with WGFA. It was an almost 5 hour concert with every living past and present rock and pop icon from McCartney to Billy Joel to Micj Jagger and Keith Richards, and The Who fucking owned it!! Must watch!!
The whole album Who´s next is the biggest reason i begged and pleaded my parent´s should buy me a bass, It ended up in i had to work for getting one. Dad hated it from the minute i brought it home and tried to play like John Entwistle (RIP).
It's shows that The Who's music can still generate an positive reaction by giving out a buzz that all Rock fans understand even those who come across them later on in life
I was 15 when this came out and just starting to really listen to music. This (Who's Next?) was my first real rock album. All kinds of people would hear me playing this, particularly Baba O'Reilly and this song, stop what they were doing and say "that's really good!" Just immediately grabbed everyone who heard it.

It's October 2019 and I am anxiously awaiting the release of the new album by The Who called "Who" that is scheduled to be released on November 22!!!! I've already heard a few songs on the new album and the standout so far is "All This Music Must Fade". Roger's voice on this is amazing!!!
One of the greatest rock songs of all times. I'm 56 now but I was turned on to this at the age of 7. Other great songs from the Playlist at that time, "Allright Now " by Free, "Do You Know What I Mean"by Lee Michaels, "Thirty Days In The Hole" by Humble Pie,and "Brown Sugar" by The Rolling Stones. Thank you very much!
While all of my friends were having that infamous, "Which band is better, the Beatles or the Rolling Stones?" argument, I was happily listening to The Who. Caught them live one time only, in St. Louis for the Quadrophenia tour. Four massive stacks, two front and two rear, with the concert performed and mixed in Quad. In my 65 years here on earth I've seen and heard a lot of bands, but that was beyond awesome. Long live Rock!!!
Won't Get Fooled Again my all time favourite song. Totally stunning the opening keyboards and keyboards in the middle section still make the hairs stand up on your neck. Keith Moon's drumming is awesome on this track.

I was 14 when this LP hit the record stores. I never purchased it because my best friend bought it and he let me borrow it to record it, not only on my "Reel to Reel" tape recorder, but also record him a copy on my cassette deck....so he could play it in his 1969 Mustang. I recorded most of his LP's on my cassette deck so he could listen to his albums in his cars. Great song...and you two make such great reaction videos!!!
The Who’s live film performance of “A Quick One While He’s Away” from the Rolling Stones rock ‘n’ roll circus will knock you out. A true gem of a live performance. Raw energy and musical mayhem at its best

VanHalen did a great cover of this song with Sammy Hagar on Vocals. He totally killed it too. All of that keyboard Sequencing in the Who original was transposed to Eddie's guitar - which was amazing. This is a great song and somehow still very relevant.
Kel, your parents missed the fact (regarding rock being "the devil's music") that the classical composer Franz Liszt was actually the first rockstar. ;) The female audience used to faint when he played his concerts. Also Roger Daltrey in The Who played Liszt himself in Ken Russell's film "Lisztomania" (1975).
When my brother became Born Again, he wasn't allowed to listen to classical music anymore, because most of them were Catholics. *eyes rolling* The good news was that I got his Queen CD collection. :-)
@Nachenty you are partially right, some classical composers were idolized like rockstars but... Nicolo Pagnini was the first born in 1782 I believe. He was flamboyant and loved by the ladies and was the first musical artist to be rumored to have sold soul to the devil.
The guitar used on this was given by Joe Walsh to Pete. He recorded most of the electric stuff on Whos Next with this. They became good friends while The Who toured America when Joe supported them while in The James Gang. It was a Gibson semi-acoustic.
That lead up to the Daltrey scream, especially the 3 fills by Keith Moon, is one of the most impactful of the rock era. Intuitively, I knew from the first listen in the 70s, that this song was neither nihilistic nor ideological. The Daltrey scream brings out my own, though silent, a primal scream that demands freedom and celebrates life and strength.
At times Keith's drumming is the definition of organised chaos. What a beast.
I recommend a book called Full Moon
