  • Executive functioning skills are often impacted in individuals with Dyslexia, ADHD, and Autism. To better understand yourself, it's important to identify which specific elements of your Executive functioning skills are affected. By doing so, you can also better comprehend the concept of executive functioning.
The different elements of executive functioning include Self-management of time, Self-motivation, Self-restraint, Self-organization/problem-solving, and Self-regulation of emotion. Taking my Executive Functioning test will help you evaluate each of these individual skill sets.
    ⏰ Timetable:
    00:00 - Intro
00:35 - What is Executive functioning?
    01:41 - Self-organization/problem-solving
    02:44 - Self-management of time
    03:51 - Self-regulation of emotion
    04:45 - Self-restraint
    05:57 - Self-motivation

🔴 Correction: If you copy the profile diagram copy the version from min 3:37 that way it will be less confusing.
I accidentally switched “self regulation of emotion” with “self management to time” over the course of the video.

Do you know where to find a score interpretation to the real BDEFS-LF self report? I found the sheet with questions online so I've completed it, summary score of 242, but I find NO WHERE what that means?? I've tried reading the academic papers on it, but because of my severe executive functioning, ADHD etc. I don't understand. And nowhere is an interpretation of the scores! I want to know if my score is as bad as I suspect... I'm close to max point on several of the 5 items.

When I'm asked questions like "Are you frequently late" or "do you follow through on commitments" it makes my time management seem better than it is. It's rare that I'm late or don't follow through with a commitment for someone else.
That's because being on time and following through are important to me and I overcompensate to make it happen. I have to set up reminders immediately because I can't rely on my brain to remember. I can't plan anything else on "Appointment Day", even if I have hours to spare. If I do, I might be late because I underestimate the time of the other tasks, get distracted, or don't give myself enough time to prepare. I frequently show up to appointments early (more than an hour isn't unusual) because I can't predict how long unforeseen obstacles might take (getting lost, technical issues).

💯 I’m the same way. I will be 30 minutes early because I can’t judge the time correctly so I am scared that I’m going to be late or get lost so I have to be extremely early.

The real question to all the questions: are there people who actually find executive functioning skills easy??

    • @ArijeAikedeHaas
      @ArijeAikedeHaas  3 месяца назад +3

Good question 😃 and the same time the studies done on executive functioning do have control groups filled with people that are not dyslexic or do not have ADHD

Yes!!! I have a friend who I would describe as consistent, level-headed, and organised. He’s kind too, but I say the other things first since to me he’s basically a magician because he just… does what he needs/wants to do without any trouble. He’s extremely reliable at work and as a friend. I feel like he’s at the other extreme when it comes to executive functioning compared to me (I have adhd, autism with demand avoidance, c-ptsd, and dysgraphia). I know a few other people who are similar to him. So not only are there people who can function well enough to avoid constant panic, there’s people who are so good at this stuff that it’s one of the most noteworthy things about them. It’s honestly unbelievable!

Obviously I want to know what the secret is but any time I ask him how he manages it he says he does know because that’s just how he is by default

Someone I know runs like a machine. His sense of time is so good, he can even regularly guess the time to within 5 mins. He dedicates a lot of time and energy to being like this though. He also has a natural skill for it too but this has greatly increased over time with his persistent practice.

Also thank you for your content. I feels validated ❤
and I glad to learn more about dyslexia ( I'm actually think I'm dyslexic too and thenks to your videos desided to get assessed for dyslexia as well)

Hi Arije, thanks for putting yourself out there and helping. Here's my results:
    Self organization: 6/6
    Self management-time: 5/6
    Self emotional regulation: 2/6
    Self restraint: 1/6
    Self motivation: 3/6
No surprise for how the results turned out, I've known I'm autistic at age 34 and suspecting ADHD. Chaos, time blindness, and disorganization has been my life's theme for since childhood.

  • @SamirCCat

I have 5 or 6 on EVERYTHING except for self-restraint (where I have 3). Not strange I find life such a struggle! I have ADHD in combination with bipolar and other mental disorders, and I've never been able to work and live on disability. I struggle so much with my household despite having a lot of help. I kind of wish I had a partner to live with just so I don't have to be fully responsible of everything. If I don't do the dishes, no one will. Living alone is difficult when you have so severe executive dysfunction as me.

I found this video very helpful. I watched it almost 5 times to get a full understanding. I would note that it was very distracting to have the "self management to time" and "self regulation of emotion" labels switch places on the executive functioning scale between 1:28 and 3:47 in the video. For me this made is very difficult to follow along from start to finish but I was still able to use this video as the great tool that it is. Thank you for your teaching!

I'm self-diagnosed autistic, and some of these questions are tricky to answer because I'm uncertain if these statements don't apply to me because they don't apply to me, or if I've developed a strategy to address these statements.
I also tend to favour visible/quick gratification from my tasks today, whilst in the past, I favoured long-term outcomes. And I don't know if this is a response to historically experiencing disappointment because my efforts towards longterm outcome didn't deliver on my expectations.

Executive Functioning is also an issue with Dyspraxia which tends to be co-morbid with ADHD, Dyslexia, and Autism
I am a neurodivergent with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD. I also have Ataxia which is a rare neurological problem. My coordination problems are in connection to both Dyspraxia and Ataxia.

Self-motivation is the one I stuggle the most with. Also I had to rewatch this section 4 or 5 times because I kept getting distracted/forgetting the questions and the first time all I heard was "climbing" (my coping mechanism is climbing so I was kinda surprised to hear that and forgot what I was supposed to do )

@@ArijeAikedeHaas - Probably the lest - is Organization. I'm actually good at that. But I think that what is important to look at really ― is what Function one has - out of the Opposite possible. I consider ADHD to be a Cognitive Type. For instance, I accept, and am further developing the theory of the Forager vs Farmer brains, for ADHD. So for this ― we should look at whether the Organization is Linear or... not. It's also possible that those that created the test ― confused the Ability to Plan - with Motivation. ADHD means that there will not be Motivation for Future Goals - that are not Important In-Themselves (which are - most things); which creates the difficulty in Planning ("considering Different Options, and Weighing the Consequences). The best lecture I've heard about this, on RUclips - is called “Defining Features of ADHD That Everyone Overlooks: RSD, Hyperarousal, More (w| Dr. William Dodson)”.
Further for Organization: of course I have a problem with Focusing\Distractions.
Listening to this again ― yes to all the rest, to some extent, and as a General Tendency; not that I actually suffer from all these. In fact I overcome most of it. For instance, I don't really miss Important Events; but that's just cause it's Urgent(from the lecture); so I just think about it much. Also - I'm probably using a method I developed ― I generally think instead of about Time - about Events\Activities. So for instance - I need to do this thing - the day after that thing I do every week; then that day - it's after that thing I do every day etc. So it connects in my mind ― to the things, instead of Abstract Time. But just things I need to do in a certain Time ― is almost impossible to remember... well, actually - to Recall; I'll definitely Remember - if someone will just ask me what I was suppose to do :-).
