Peter Frampton put the humble in Humble Pie. He is such a wonderful person and an amazing artist. It's great to see Gibson work with him. The last time I saw one of the 25 limited edition Phoenix guitars for sale, it was going for $35k. Amazingly, 25 people must have had some cash to burn. $7k is still too deep for many guitar players' pockets. Even a Les Paul Studio with it gig bag is a bit steep. Fortunately, I was able to find a like new Faded T series for $600 with a real case. Unless the economy turns around, I can't see myself buying a new Gibson. Let's hope that someday Gibson will remember the average working guy and make an affordable Les Paul.
I will never get tired of hearing Peter tell the story of this guitar. Not only because of how amazing the story is..but also because I think it really highlights how some of us are lucky enough to find THE guitar. Growing up playing guitar, I ran into a lot of cats who talked about having their one main guitar that is absolutely perfect and how they would never get rid of it. Until a few years ago, I was never enough to find my one, perfect guitar. However, that changed in 2021 when I bought a normal, off of the shelf, Gibson LP 60s. I've had numerous LPs in my 30 years of playing..and still have 4. But there is something special about this 1 particular guitar. Actually, it is the neck. The way Peter talks about knowing his guitar reminds me of how I feel about my favorite guitar. I didn't think a neck could feel that good in my hands. ...on another note.. you could think that with modern manufacturing and CNC machines, there wouldn't be much variation in the necks of current guitar. However, while I've tried to find a 2nd one of these guitars that has this perfect neck for me, I can't find one. They are close..but there is something special that makes me work for me. I'm sure there are tons of viewers/readers will know exactly what I'm trying to put into words.
Peter Frampton has to be one of the most humble superstar musicians that has ever walked this planet. And the Phenix is proof positive that you never find the perfect guitar, the perfect guitar always finds you. Cheers from the Land Down Under.
I’m sure Jimi Hendrix would have made hits in the 80’s, 90’s and every decade of life had he the chance but then there are people who play the same song over and over and they are considered superstars
I have the Epiphone version from 2016 or so. Bought it new. PF’s autograph in the case with the case candy. I’ll keep it, but the build quality is terrible. Terrible action out of the box. The truss rod nut wasn’t attached and the upper frets were like a cheese grater, among other things.
AMAZING interview, Mark! You really bring out the best conversations with your guests. I'm dreaming about the day that you might possibly interview Eric Clapton about his 335 and SG.
Peter, congrats on your Rock Hall of Fame induction! Best part of the entire ceremony and long overdue! Thank you for all the music and inspiration! ❤❤❤
Since 2020 ive bought 2 new Epis and 4 new Gibsons. The epis are a Bonamassa Lazarus snd a Modern LP. Both guitars have issues. The Modern I paid for the Big Box store to do a setup and it STILL has buzzy frets. The Lazarus has tuning mechanisms that rattle when there are no strings in it and both have bridges that the holes are too big for the screws. The Gibsons are perfect. You get what you pay for
Peter has been my all-time favorite guitarist since Humble Pie released "Humble Pie Performance Rockin' The Fillmore" and "The Phenix" is my all-time favorite Les Paul. I bought the album when it was released in 1971 and it was his playing on it (which was unlike any of his contemporaries) and the pictures of him on it with that absolutely gorgeous Custom, that made me want to play guitar. I've seen him numerous times over the years since the early '70s, including two weeks before the show at the Beacon Theatre, in NYC, then also at the Beacon Theatre, the night he played the "Phenix" for first time live and my wife and I have met him on several occasions. He's a gentleman and has always been gracious with his time. I hope that he can continue to play/make music, for many years to come.
Don't think Ace did. His most famous LP, the 74 sunburst had three pickups. However, the neck pickup wasn't wired up and the middle pickup was a dummy. Ace only used the bridge pickup.
How come current ownership/management act like the Ace Frehley's 3 pickup Custom isn't on the Mount Rushmore of guitars? Ace's '59 dirty lemon burst is bad as hell too...imo
@@boblabahh4893 but what's that have to do with Ace playing the "Coolest Guitar Ever Built" and being one of the top 10 most influential guitarsist in music history? Gibson has made a whole bunch of money off of Ace Frehley, I'd say Ace is close to Slash without 3/4 of the promotion and products...imo
Some unanswered questions: I bet he's encountered a thousand people over the years who claim to have found his guitar. What was the subject line of that fateful e-mail? Frampton went so many years without that guitar, he had to let it go. He couldn't have spent 3 decades pining for it. Did all that scar tissue just **poof** disappear the second he held it again?
@ Someone needs to think realistically. There is probably less than 1% chance that anything to do with etymology is in play here, and the remaining 99%+ chance is that it’s a spelling error. Common sense is your friend.
Ever since JC Curliegh Restored the legendary Epiphone back to premium brand in 2019/2020 i have zero use for any Gibson im now a loyal Epiphone man and play the daddy of the Gibson standard Les Paul solid body guitar... The legendary Epiphone Les Paul
Idk about all that.. I got a brand new 2020 epiphone LP custom with ebony fretboard and the frets on it, and frets on epiphones are absolutely trash. I had to get a fretjob already. Epiphone is awesome but still has some shortcomings.
Yeah bro, check it out, Frampton's les paul on my wall. DONT TOUCH IT!!! I was on a four there, you don't wanna see me go to ten. No I don't play it, in five years I will double my money.
Dude acts like a piece of wood with strings is some magical demon possessed instrument conjured through incantation in a ritual and cannot be replaced. The fact is Peter your music isn’t in the top 20 for guitarists and it’s all in your ego and head
How so? Another incredible story is the MyLesPaul forum thread that pre dates the email Frampton received. That thread is hundreds of pages with people going to great lengths discussing, arguing, scoffing that this random guy (I think it was the Dutch gentleman Frampton mentions) posted images of this guitar claiming to be Framptons. This was all happening in real time for months before the Gibson/Frampton announcement was made nationally. It's an incredible read, if that thread still exists (I think it does. It might be pinned). It'll take some time to read but worth it.
one of the most beautiful guitars!!
Fantastic run down memory lane. Watching Peter's eyes while he tells the story is telling of his love for the instrument and the sound.

Great Interview and story! Peter is a complete class act!
I got chills right as he said I got chills.
Such a class act.
Have seen him seven times. Always a great show
A NEW Epiphone version of this guitar is mighty high on my wish list.
Get the Gibson.

@thegoldendog7991 sorry to hear, but epiphone has improved vastly since then
@@ST-xg3gy I did! My pride and joy. I first saw Peter in the Herd. Great chap, love his playing.

Why, so he can pay thousands more than it's actually worth just for a name???

Primo !! Great up close look at this guitar ..
Didn't Ace Frehley have a guitar that was a similar setup? The crash and burn aspect to this guitar is amazing, Gibson labs did a good crash n burn.
Don't think Ace did. His most famous LP, the 74 sunburst had three pickups. However, the neck pickup wasn't wired up and the middle pickup was a dummy. Ace only used the bridge pickup.
Very cool story. Thanks!
What a great story. Had no idea the journey this guitar went through or how cool its setup is. Another great “take my money moment” Gibson. 😂 💸
classic "take my money moment"
That’s so cool-thank you.
what a fantastic story. the spotlight on it with the crowd going nuts gave me goosebumps too, lol.
A big CONGRATS!!!!! to Peter Frampton on his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame such a great guitarist
Is he really though?

Mark As always, Nice Work! WooF!🐶🐶
I love Les Pauls but never found a good one. Friends had them and they're out there...
A few Southern rock bands also played Les Paul's a think, didn't hear one of their names
Mark...no leather jackets with big zippers, etc. on guitars...STOP IT, for Pete's (literally) sake! 😩 I'll keep asking...
I’ve typed the same comment on several of his videos, what an idiot
Peter Frampton uses ceramic magnets pickups?
15 years too late, if only they made signature models decades ago...

Someone needs to learn how to spell ‘Phoenix’
Someone needs to study etymology. "Phenix" is a very apt name for Frampton's guitar for at least a couple of reasons. Google is your friend.
@ Someone needs to think realistically. There is probably less than 1% chance that anything to do with etymology is in play here, and the remaining 99%+ chance is that it’s a spelling error. Common sense is your friend.
@ run along, now. Mummy’s calling.
He and Neil Young have that same year Black Beauty.✌️
The only difference is that Frampton can actually play his.
