Outstanding video! Appreciate the work you put in…you are a unicorn in mentioning that someone with a low handicapper may not necessarily have a high swing speed. I’m a 7 HCP and my 7 iron swing speed is low 80s. When I saw Mizuno came out with the HL I was excited. However, after hitting it, I can’t play it…it’s way too big for me and the offset is massive…I grew up learning on a set of Chi Chi Rodriguez blades and have trouble hitting more game improvement type clubs…I was fitted and purchased a set of 923 HMP and they are very big for me and I tend to hit it all over the face giving me up to 30 yards difference in carries…So, went the other direction and got fitted for the 221s and absolutely love them. I hit them so much better than all the others I’ve tried (including the 223 and 225)…I just wish they made something in this size with a little more zip…my 7 irons are going about 145 or so, which I don’t mind, but more importantly, the 221s give me a much better landing angle, closer to 47 degrees, over the HMPs which is around 43…hopefully someday the tech will be there to make a hot MB version of the 221s, sort of like Titleist did with the T100 and T100s!! (I played the T100s for a while and they are great)….but love my Mizzies…

I would echo his comment about getting fitted for the right head. AND, don’t think bigger is always better. I am about a 7HCP, but getting a little older (54), had 2 hip replacements, back issues, etc., and had always played more of a blade/MB in my younger days. After a 3 year hiatus for my second hip replacement I was back, but slower, so figured I needed more help with speed and decided to get professionally fitted. I told the fitter I needed more distance help and I didn’t care about the brand. I hit just about every player distance and game improvement iron out there. We settled (key word here), on the Titleist T200 irons. Played them for 6 months and absolutely hated it…they performed well, but the sound/feel was terrible. Then, after doing some testing on my own, wound up with Titleist T100s irons and immediately everything was better…but, missed my old Mizunos (MP 69/59 blended set). So, went to get fitted for Mizzies and did the same thing (I need distance)…got fitted for JPX 923 HMPs. Great club, but the club just appeared huge to me and I had a tough time with consistency…thought I might need a bigger club…tried the HM and HL…worse…then, just for S&G, we tried the 225…223…221s….out of all of them, I hit the 221s most consistently. So, I’m not bombing my 7 iron 165 (closer to 145), but I hit this consistent and accurately and haven’t looked back…so, yes, get fitted, but also, don’t limit yourself…I was shocked how forgiving modern blades are (there really aren’t any blades out there anymore…the 221s are a MB and the JPX tour a CB - same with most other brands)…and they feel amazing!!!I still have both sets (JPX 921 HMP and 221s). Hoping to be able to play the HMPs some day…I was the last of my buddies to go to the 460cc driver head…just seemed like a clown club to me for years…

Low swing speed of 65mph but decent handicap of 11 but am getting old do you think I should be looking at graphite shafts and by the way always great reviews
Hi Stephen, most probably at that speed but I'd book a season on the Swing DNA Shaft Analyser and find out exactly what bend profile you need against what you like the feel of 👍
Disappointed with Mizuno demo/ fitting. Advised swing analyser software not functional since last software update, January 23. So got what you call a “bumper car” shaft fitting using Trackman. Balls were a shag bag of a variety of ball and measured with TrackMan! What’s your view?
My reply didn't seem to have gone through so I'll try and remember what I said before 😊 I used my software this week so definitely absolutely no problem with the software or analysis tool. Unfortunately many a time, incompetencies within the fitter blames software to hardware issues. Any time you have tools that enhance the experience of the client, it depends on the fitter/professional spending the time to know how it works intimately. This in my experience with the number of peoples comments is seldom frequent 😕 couple that with the ball side of things and not being able to complete the fitting using your own gamer ball would have made me want to walk out. Was it a paid for or free fitting? I guess it's an excuse to hit on a launch monitor but by using all different kinds and types of ball in the shag bag, that alone will create inconsistent results 😭🤦🤦
@@AskGolfNut This was a free demo day but the recommendations were handed to the shop pro. The only positive is that I have a demo club to try in our links simulators with my own gamer ball. However I feel this is not a club fit as no lie angle, shaft length or other metrics were measured, unless trackman does this. As I say, disappointed. Thanks for taking time to reply.
Nope trackman wouldn't measure that. It's something that has to be done dynamically or by using a launch monitor such as GCQuad that measures it directly. Try to stay away from lie boards as they do that very thing unfortunately...... lie 🤥 👍

Can make a big difference depending on the golfer. Best to get fitted using the Swing DNA tool and then communicate with the fitter your thoughts on shaft weight to then blend the 2 factors, weight and bend profile 👍
With 45 degrees descent angle being key ro holding greens, the only 2 irons recommended for a slow swinger are the HL and Tour which just grab 45 degrees descent?
My Brother has the JPX 923 Hot Metal and have to say if you are Mid Handicap Player these are great option. They have very good Distant and Forgiveness and they are Sexy looking Club. Also I noticed 7 Iron and Higher the Spin Rate are fantastic. I personally have Callaway Rogue St MAX OS and currently 15 Handicap and like the Spin Rate on JPX 923 over MAX OS. But like the Distant I get with MAX OS over the JPX. I do like the Feedback in Feel you get when you miss hit Club with JPX 923 over MAX OS. Can't go wrong with either one just make sure you get the Right Shaft based on your Swing Speed. I personally Prefer Iron Shaft over Graphite but I know with the right Graphite Shaft you can get more Distant if needed.
Jay, great review, have 78-80 mph 7iron speed. Want forgiveness but don’t like big offset or junky, what do, do you think if hot metal pro 2 degrees weak makes sense? Thanks Ron , keep up the great work.
Could do that Ron, but without being able to change the CG of the head, all that might happen would be messing about with the bounce and offset. High Launch options have to be achieved by one of 2 ways, 1, slightly larger head design with lower further back CG, or 2 same head design but lighter construction (head and shaft combo) to move the mass faster, create more head speed, thus ball speed to increase peak height and land angle. The later though has the effect of lowering the forgiveness level of the iron and can make it somewhat unstable. Really the only true way to make a HL head design is to use the 1st option..... The negative of that though unfortunately is the increase in head dimensions 👍
Been testing my driver set-up over the past 18 months and it seems my best yet is a Paradym Triple Diamond at 9 degrees with a Ventus Black Velocore 5X at D9. Shocked at the swing weight but I hit 12/13 fairwayish drives the other day so she's a keeper. 😅
All are welcome 👍 in response, swing weight is important with all clubs, possibly most felt with Driver due to the speed and length of the club. Finding the balance is key to applying a repeated action 👍
@@markl577 Sorry, stream of thought post. My iron swing weight is around D5. This might not be possible from the Mizuno factory with many graphite shafts at standard length. That's the point. Plan your purchase very carefully because your specs might not be available.

It would I agree. Some manufacturers do actually measure it in mm but not all. We are still in a time of transitioning measurements, so at one point hopefully we'll all be using the same unit of measurement 😊
I ended up getting the hot metals with a dg 105 r300 shaft, love the feel of them and if they went any higher there going to the moon, I'm still trying to get used to how light they feel and I sometimes i pull right on my not so good strikes ( lefty), I'm a tad concerned how well there going to hold up cosmetic wise though after only using once on the range I noticed a very tiny amount of the shiny chrome at the bottom chipped away from my 5 iron, maybe it was like that from factory I dunno but it's concerning how battered they might look after afew rounds, guess Ill find out
Hi Anthony, not something that I have heard a lot of people questioning (the chroming). I know that sods law says someone will get a dud qc head at some point. But more often 99.9% of the time it's been 2 clubs coming into contact with each other. Obviously 1 would be Mizunos job to fix (that's why it's imperative to ensure a full inspection of the product is conducted on arrival) and then the other obviously is the owners. Too many people (seen it soooo many times) drop their clubs into the bag if even from a few inches and it's just bad luck how to clubs come together at that angle and chip a piece off or dent an edge. Really unfortunately unless you know which one it is, the only thing you can do is try to keep the small ding clean and dry. 👍
Yeah it's like scratching a new car really frustrating but it is small I could sort of see how it would get passed qc, I'm going to monitor it and if more of the shiny paint starts flaking away I'll take it back, I've tried to get it in my head that there going to get beat up eventually on the course through so trying to not let it bother me, it's only the 5 iron that's done it and I do try to be as careful as possible taking clubs in and out but unfortunately my bag doesn't have full length dividers :( if I had know about them at the time of getting a new bag I would have made sure It had full length
Good question, what's your requirements from an iron? What's your strike tendencies? Do you need more distance? Do you want more height? Do you want a better feeling iron.... There are so many different reasons as to which club any particular handicap would need/have. 👍
Fantastic compare as usual. Have you considered doing a "least functional clubhead speed", efficiency dropoff at 20 mm toe / 10 mm heel / 10 mm low for the clubs that you review? Would give a pretty graphic in the compare videos, and you always seem to produce this mishits in your reviews anyways.
@@AskGolfNut My point is you always have those mishits anyways. My suggestion was just to jot them down in a spreadsheet 🥦. We want your hands and fingers intact for the next releases thank you very much, so just use what you have, even if it's not on the millimeter. The lower functional speed might require a few hits extra though.
Handicap rating to determine head choice is very much an old school or easy answer reply, really it's to do with the quality of strike the golfer has, the requirements for forgiveness linked to the Golfer's strike pattern and their launch needs. All the heads have different characteristics, so it's very much so a more complex answer than whatever the handicap is of the golfer 👍
@@AskGolfNut well it’s fair to say nobody on Utube does the spec on golf clubs better than you so it’s time we’ll spent and most grateful for it . I myself was particular interested in this one as I’m looking to go Mizuno possibly forged but will go and try as I have before chosen an iron only to get fitted into something else more suitable . Keep up the great content it’s most appreciated 👌🏻
Absolutely, but that's really only relative to loft 👍 if you were to match lofts then you'd find actually the dispersion differences are minimal. Biggest difference is the loft gaps for hither swing speeds, so the distance irons would create far too big a gap 👍
I play the 923 tour and it’s fantastic. Ball flight is very high and they’re very workable as well. You need some speed to play them but if you’re a good ball striker above 90 mph, these are the best option out there. Surprisingly forgiving as well

Do you have twitter ? I'll send a picture of it and see what you think
Did you post a picture on the Mizuno Facebook page?
@@AskGolfNut not Facebook page no, I did post one on the twitter page
Which one better for 20 handicap? Thanks
Good question, what's your requirements from an iron? What's your strike tendencies? Do you need more distance? Do you want more height? Do you want a better feeling iron.... There are so many different reasons as to which club any particular handicap would need/have. 👍
Very good point 👍👍
Fantastic compare as usual. Have you considered doing a "least functional clubhead speed", efficiency dropoff at 20 mm toe / 10 mm heel / 10 mm low for the clubs that you review? Would give a pretty graphic in the compare videos, and you always seem to produce this mishits in your reviews anyways.
My poor hands and fingers if you want me to do a comparison of miss hits 😂😂 might be an interesting take though 👍
What would you recommend for around 15 handicap?
Handicap rating to determine head choice is very much an old school or easy answer reply, really it's to do with the quality of strike the golfer has, the requirements for forgiveness linked to the Golfer's strike pattern and their launch needs. All the heads have different characteristics, so it's very much so a more complex answer than whatever the handicap is of the golfer 👍
Thanks
I do not understand why the Pro has les spin, less angle on the green… may stick less near the flag?… the HM seems the best of the 3!
Cool, I have a choice to make
Be interesting to see what your DNA numbers are and how that marries with the right head 👍
Another quality video
Thanks Gary, that one took one heck of a while to edit down to a manageable duration 😊
Would it be accurate to assume that the dispersion would be better with the tour for high speed players that struggle with the odd flyer/pull/push?
Absolutely, but that's really only relative to loft 👍 if you were to match lofts then you'd find actually the dispersion differences are minimal. Biggest difference is the loft gaps for hither swing speeds, so the distance irons would create far too big a gap 👍
Jay is a ROBOT !!
I wish I was... Would make testing quicker 😁
I play the 923 tour and it’s fantastic. Ball flight is very high and they’re very workable as well. You need some speed to play them but if you’re a good ball striker above 90 mph, these are the best option out there. Surprisingly forgiving as well
His other video showed it was several millimeters more forgiving than the MP blades with the same lofts and feel.
