    Gidday,
I basically went through the same exact process as your FJ but with my 99 R1. I rebuilt the carbs, front suspension, paint, electrical…basically everything with limited prior experience. I've been tinkering for two years on it now.
I invested in a quality ultrasonic cleaner to properly clean my carbs but I’ve used it for so many other odd jobs fixing things like circuit boards, idle air control valves and an exhaust recirculation valve, they pay for themselves quick as they're very versatile. You can totally re build your carbs.
Make sure you get genuine Mikuni jets if you replace any.

Yes I have an ultrasonic they're very useful. Just sorting my FJ carbs out at the moment then that should get my bike back to usable condition.

I'd be tempted to leave it lookinga bit rough, but make it mechanically brilliant. A bit like a rat bike. Trouble with making an old bike look better is its never ending. It can always be a bit better, and a bit better, and a bit better. You get my drift. I like the look of it like it is. Like you say, reroute the cabling to hide the wires and strip off what's not needed.

That's very true. I want it to be reliable first then get it looking exactly as I want then work on the condition after.
