  • I had the opportunity to take the new Hobie Lynx kayak out for a demo from Strictly Sail & Kayak in Cincinnati, Ohio, with my buddy, Bert, and Brian Tacy (of Strictly Sail), and figured I'd give you guys my take on it (spoiler alert: I LOVE IT!). You really can't tell if you are going to like a kayak until you get it on the water, and looking at pictures of the Lynx, I was skeptical because it looked a little like a paddle board with a seat. But once I was on it on the water, I fell completely in love!
    This boat is light (at 47 pounds hull weight, it is super easy for me to load on my car top roof rack!), super stable (11 feet long, 35 inches wide and 350 pounds weight capacity, plenty of stability and room!), and really fast and agile in turning and maneuvering!
    I come from a sit-in, paddle kayak, so it took me a little longer than may be average to assemble the kayak at the lake the first time (get the seat on it, rudder installed, H-crate attached, mirage drive in...), but I figured it all out, and it really was pretty easy. And did I mention how light the kayak is? I think I did, but just in case... it is so light, I could pick it up with one hand, put it under my arm, and carry it around that way!
    Bert and I switched boats after a bit (we actually switched kayaks while on the water and no one fell in!) and he loved the Lynx so much, he wouldn't go back to his Hobie PA 360! So I have another video of Bert catching frog fish in the Lynx coming up next!
    If all goes as planned, you will get new GirlGoneFishing videos from tournaments with the Lynx and giant, tournament winning bass!
    UPDATE: After two and a half months of using the Lynx as my primary tournament and fun fishing kayak, I love it even more! It is absolutely the perfect boat for me in 99% of all applications… except for shallow river fishing. We are discovering the hull does not like being beat against rocks, so I’m hoping to get a Hobie iTreck 11 ultralight inflatable as my shallow river boat when they come out in 2022. The Hobie Lynx has excelled in every other situation we’ve encountered! Wind, waves, current… none of it bothers this awesome little boat!
    2022 UPDATE: Another tournament season, and the Lynx and I are still going strong! Check out my GirlGoneFishing channel for lots of tournament videos!
    Check out Strictly Sail & Kayak on facebook or their webpage to set up your own kayak demo... they are our local Cincinnati Hobie dealer, but they also carry Old Towns, NuCanoe, FeelFree, and 3Waters kayaks, plus a nice selection of sailboats both new and used!

    Thank you. This was the one and only look at the Hobie Lynx that gave insight into the learning curve of a new user. Helpful for anyone wanting to buy a few as rentals. There is certainly a "preflight" mini boot camp needed except for the most perfect launch and use areas that would not require lifting the rudder. Nice film. Thank you.

      Thanks, glad it was helpful! Coming from a sit-in, paddle kayak, the Lynx felt very foreign at first, but during this demo, I quickly began trusting in the stability and became more comfortable. Now, 5 weeks and 7 bass tournaments later, I can say I have only fallen more in love with it! I had it out on Lake Erie last week, it didn't even blink at those big boat wakes! It is an awesome little boat!

      The H-crate is the most important thing on there, and it is about $144, 4 additional rod holders mounted on the crate at $25 each, it needs the H-rails for the sides (which aren't available yet), but I heard those will be $100 each.. and totally worth it! The front H-rail on this Lynx was custom made but Strictly Sail & Kayak... they cut it down from a rail that was made for a Hobie Outback. That is all that is really mandatory to make it an excellent fishing kayak... but I had to add front and rear camera mounts for my channel. As for buying... at this point Strictly Sail is still letting me borrow their demo Lynx, so I'll ride that out as long as they are willing!

    Looks like another amazing kayak from Hobie. I purchased my first ever kayak last year. A Pro Angler 14 360. Quite heavy for my car and can’t tow it. This seems like the perfect kayak to get out and fish with. Easily transportable. Thanks for the great video!

    • @GirlGoneFishing
      @GirlGoneFishing  3 года назад +1

      The PA is an amazing boat, but they are really heavy! I always said if I ever get a truck and a trailer, I would get a PA or an Outback, but in 2 months of tournament fishing on the Lynx, I haven’t found much it can’t do. It doesn’t have the horizontal rod storage of a PA or the massive storage capacity to bring way too much stuff, and in big waves your feet will get wet, which would not be as fun in the winter. But besides those things, I can’t find a negative about the Lynx. Check out my newer videos from fishing tournaments on the Lynx since this demo, I’ve had it out almost every weekend since! I’m working now on a video from the KBF Lake Erie/ Erie Harbors tournament last weekend, which was the waviest I’ve had it out in, and it handled great! That video should be up this week if I could stop fishing long enough to get it edited! 🤣

    • @indysaab
      @indysaab 3 года назад

      @@GirlGoneFishing I will certainly check out more of your videos. It appears you were hooked after your test float, no pun intended.
      With me. I bought the kayak. Then bought a crazy car, a tiny one. A Smart Car. Car topped the Pro Angler once and it about killed me putting it up there. Was absolutely hilarious though. I will be getting something with a hitch at some point. Live on a lake so I’m out in it whenever I can at home. But a Lynx. You could ride a bicycle and carry that almost! Great point on your feet getting wet and anything else on the deck.

    • @indysaab
      @indysaab 3 года назад +1

      @@GirlGoneFishing you had mentioned a truck to tow with. I’ve been looking at Subaru for that actually. That way all my gear can be stored inside and it’s a super comfortable ride. Cheaper too! Even in today’s market. I have no affiliation with them, just been doing a ton of research.
      Oh one more question about the Lynx. The legroom, is it comparable to a pro angled with the adjustable pedals? I barely fit as I’m 6’8

    • @GirlGoneFishing
      @GirlGoneFishing  3 года назад +1

      @@indysaab I am a big fan of Subarus! I should’ve bought one when they partnered with the Professional Ski Instructors of America and gave us a discount, but PSIA has switched to Volkswagen now. As for legroom, I am 5’7’ and I used the number 2 setting the one time I was in a PA, and the same number 2 setting on my Lynx, so maybe they are comparable, but I’m not really sure. If you message Strictly Sail & Kayak on facebook, I’m sure they can answer any questions!

    I’m sure you know now. But, for others. You have to do a fast upward snap to bring rudder up. Comes down with smack, but it’s the way. Took me a few trials to figure it wasn’t faulty

    • @GirlGoneFishing
      @GirlGoneFishing  2 года назад

      I'm still struggling with that rudder up and down! I ended up wrapping the cord around the chair leg to keep the rudder from dragging when I was fishing a shallow area and couldn't get the rudder to stay up. Most of the time, I reach back with my paddle and try to lift the rudder up while pulling cord, but it isn't a good solution. The H-Crate does push the cord off to the side a little, so I wonder if that makes it harder to operate.

      I had to go back and look, but I think they put an H-Crate JR on there for the demo, but when the Lynx became mine, I switched it to the bigger size, the regular H-Crate. It fits perfectly and you need as much storage as you can get on the Lynx since there isn't in-hull storage. strictlysailinc.com/products/hobie-h-crate-storage-system-item-72020088?_pos=1&_sid=427f570cd&_ss=r

You just have to get used to how much lateral movement there is with that hull design... it seemed to lean over a bit, but then it would be pretty solid staying like that.

    Great job with the video. Today is my first day trying to educate myself about kayaks. I was concerned about how far the pedals sat from the seat. It seems like a bit of a reach for you at 5"7. I am 5'4" and my wife is 5'1". I know you set yours at the 2nds position in this video. I wonder if even at the 1st position, we could reach the pedals to give them the power they needed. Thank you.

    Putting the wheels by tipping the kayak on its side scuffs up the side of the hull.

    • @GirlGoneFishing
      @GirlGoneFishing  2 года назад

      Yeah, I’ve figured that out over time… also a pain when it is fully loaded and everything falls off. I’m still working on the best way to get it on the cart at the ramp at the end of the day. I feel pressure to clear off the ramp quickly, so I don’t want to take the time to clear the top of the kayak off so I can safely tip it over, so I’ve been basically swimming the kayak out to waist deep water and then struggling to get the floating wheels down so I can get the posts in the scupper holes. It does feel nice to swim in the summer heat, but how do I handle that in the colder months? It seeks like there has to be a better way.

    • @Plainview200
      @Plainview200 2 года назад +1

      Hobie is really great (maybe the best) at designing for on the water, but they kinda drop the ball when it comes to handling the yaks at the ramp and onto land. Their cart can be awkward to use, and, as noted, tipping the yak on the side on rough surfaces does damage. Even using the bungee trick (which Hobie ignores) to insert the cart will slightly damage the bow. Perhaps, instead of designing in features to allow you to install $600 ($600!) stakeout poles, they could put a tad more effort into innovative ergonomics to handle their products on land. Or at least design in features to minimize damage to the hull.

    This is the first product I’ve seen from Hobie that is worthy of my money. I’m saying “my” money. Hobie makes some really nice stuff. Not bashing at all. Just saying the difference in some of their other boats and what’s available from competitors, I can’t justify the price difference. This on the other hand, there’s not really anything that I know of that’s close. Zulu from kaku, maybe?

    • @GirlGoneFishing
      @GirlGoneFishing  3 года назад

      One thing I have always respected about Hobie is that they are innovators, always pushing the technical aspects of water sports to the next level, always on that leading edge for engineering and design. When I first saw a photo of the Lynx, I was afraid it would feel really tippy, sitting up so high on a surfboard, but I was amazed at the stability, agility, and comfort! I just fished Lake Erie/Erie Harbors this past weekend for the KBF/BKFT tournaments, and I was out in the waves/boat wakes and the Lynx just rode those like it was nothing. Plus the light weight is amazing for me, since I load it on my car-top roof rack, and I just can't manage the heavy kayaks.

    Hi Mellissa, greetings from the East Coast! I am one of your subscribers, and I am a brand new spot fishing angler. I was trying to find a kayak that is handy and efficient, and I came across your VDO and you know what, I just got myself a Lynx. I had to drive nearly two hrs to pick it up and I am loving it. Thank you for inspiring me. You are a great sales person. Anyway, I have a question to ask if you don’t mind. I would like to know what kind of roof rack have you got and where did you purchase them? I am planning on transporting my Lynx to the ponds around my area. Thank you and keep up good work! Kris

    • @GirlGoneFishing
      @GirlGoneFishing  3 года назад +1

      Congrats on your new Lynx! I have a Yakima roof rack, and for the Lynx I use just the basic cross bars with foam padding on them, then strap it down with some belly straps (around the middle of the kayak, circled around the cross bars on each side), and I use a ratchet strap hooked to the car’s frame on the nose and tail for extra security. You have to be careful with the ratchet straps, though, since there isn’t a very strong place to hook them on the kayak, a system where you tie the nose and tail back to the cross bars would be good, too. You just need to prevent air under the nose from lofting the kayak up and off the car, and from it sliding forward if you have to slam on your brakes. I was using cheap foam “pool noodle” type padding on the bars, but it keeps flying off on the highway, so I’m looking for a better padding option. In the mean time, I’m using tape around the foam to try and keep it from coming off (because there is a slit down the foam so you can pop it on the bar… in transit they tend to spin around so the slit is at the top, then they just fall off, I suppose. I’ve lost 2 on the highway already). I think I’ll something like this, although I can’t quite tell from this photo, need to do a little more research: strictlysailinc.com/products/hobie-roof-rack-24-pads?_pos=1&_sid=29e5337af&_ss=r

    • @GirlGoneFishing
      @GirlGoneFishing  3 года назад

      Oh, sorry, you meant the actual roof rack. I have a Yakima, because I need their Boat Loader bar (formerly known as the Solo Loader Bar). It pulls out from the front crossbar, and you put the nose of the boat up on it, then pivot the tail up and over onto the roof rack. That way, you only lift half the weight at a time… which is a necessity for me to get my regular sit-in kayak up there. But if the solo loader bar isn’t a factor, Thule roof racks are about as good as Yakima.

      @@treybailey886 That is great that you love your Old Town! My Old Town Loon is what got me into kayak fishing, and I grew up paddling Old Town canoes, so I am a big fan! But I’ve been looking to move from a paddle kayak to a pedal kayak, and the quality ones are all too heavy for me to load on my car-top roof rack, and buying a truck or a trailer and a new kayak isn’t financially possible. My current Loon sit-in kayak is 54 pounds hull weight (so I’m guessing 60 pounds rigged), and with the hull shape of a sit-in and the weight, it feels like the limit of what I can handle loading and unloading. The Old Town PDL is 122 pounds assembled, the Hobie Lynx is 61 pounds assembled (and flat on the bottom which makes loading car-top by myself much easier), and a 61 pound pedal kayak that has excellent performance on the water is a game changer for a lot of people and a lot of kayaking situations.

I love my FeelFree so much I bought a 11.5 too. This Hobie looks sweet. I N E E D one. I own a Hobie sailboard that I purchased in 1989, I still use it! 32 years old and still in excellent shape. This demo was not very well thought out. Why didn’t they give this girl a dry land walk through so she would be familiar with the different systems of this kayak instead of videoing her fumbling around? She should have known how to mount the rudder and Mirage drive before going anywhere near the water. As for launching, I don’t think sitting on the kayak on dry land and scooting it over gravel is the way to go. What would she have done at a concrete boat ramp? Put it in the water and paddle out a bit, get on the kayak, then mount the Mirage drive. Oh wait a minute, she didn’t have a paddle! This is wrong too. If you are out on the water and the drive breaks, or in shallow water, you need a paddle!
    For me, this was a very poor demo.

    • @GirlGoneFishing
      @GirlGoneFishing  3 года назад

      Speaking as “this girl”’, I appreciate your point of view, but the demo was exactly as I wanted it. It was my first look at the Lynx. They had given me a demonstration of everything at Strictly Sail before I left with the Lynx, and the shop owner was right behind me in getting to the lake…I chose to do the video before he got there, because I wanted it to be an authentic, brand-new approach to the kayak. I did have a paddle, it was in the Lynx paddle holder. This boat is often purchased as a river kayak, so if the hull isn’t able to handle dragging over gravel, many people would be very surprised. I have now fished in this Lynx for 4 weeks, including 5 tournaments, and I love it, I am quite pleased with both the video and the Lynx. But thank you for your feedback. :)

      Hi! I’m Melissa (“this woman”) and this video is on my GirlGoneFishing channel, along with my 2 years of kayak bass tournament videos. So yes, I have fished before, however before Strictly Sail & Kayak let me use their demo Hobie Lynx, I had always fished from an Old Town Loon sit-in paddle kayak. So I had never put together a Hobie, or stood up in a kayak… which is part of the reason they wanted me to make this video. It is from the perspective of someone who is not an expert, showing this is a great light-weight boat with easy set-up. There are plenty of “expert walkthrough” videos out there if that is more to your liking.
