  • The Chutes at Mt Rose Ski Tahoe offer big lines and some of North America’s longest sustained steeps.
Once a favourite (and dangerous) poach by the extreme and expert riders of Reno and Tahoe, The Chutes put Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe on the map when they first opened in 2004. This special resort area offers world-class avy-controlled steeps that are managed by ski patrol and only open up when the conditions are just right. What separates the Chutes from other steep resort terrain are their long sustained pitches of 40 to 50+ degrees. Covering around 200 acres in a horseshoe bowl, the Chutes are north-facing, this means the snow stays chalky and fresh even when bumped out. There are 16 named chutes accessed via nine gates, with lots of terrain in between.
Thanks to the abundance of snow Mt Rose has already had in the season we struck gold when we visited in February of 2022. We took on two of the advanced level chutes and left the expert chutes to the experts. The view down El Cap was a little to intense for us to drop in. The very tops of the chutes tested our jump turn abilities but the lower aspects and the run out trails were a blast.
