Master Ueki has that picture of the most perfect yoko-geri on a cliffside, in Master Nakayama's Dynamic Karate. I've trained at times under Mikami Sensei, Okazaki Sensei and even twice under Nakayama Sensei. I've been blessed, for sure. The karateka of those generations are unparalleled. And Epstein didn't kill himself.
I think it was 1972 JKA final kumite, Ueki vs Oishi. Ueki known for his brilliant kicks, Oishi for his speed and punching (Mr Lightning, they called him). Basically each waited out the other, until Ueki found his distance, fired off a mawashi geri at Oishis head. Oishi blocked, countered gyaku zuki for the match, and championship. After the match ended, it was found that Uekis kick, had in fact, broken Oishis forearm. I dont care what many people say these days (dismissive of karate as being effective fight art), unless you fought a top karate fighter back then, there is no basis of authority to critique. Those fighters were for f---g real. You just cannot compare to the way many karate people fight now, (though there are some that still are for real).
That's why we just gotta ignore the haters and continue doing what we're doing. When I started jiu-jitsu about a decade ago one of my training partners turned out to be a black belt in the same system as me. His instructor's instructor and mine both received their black belts from the same person in the 1970s. I guess his lineage had become very McDojo-ish and he had lost a real fight once and developed a dislike for anything besides jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai. At any chance he had he would remind me that karate "didn't work". I simply kept quiet. No need to argue. He sold mattresses for a living and I did armed security. People would ask if I ever got annoyed with the karate slamming and I would tell them no. I simply say same system, different instructors and maybe he just wasn't a good fighter to begin with.
Naka Sensei should talk to Machida-san and his family. I know that many karateka don't think much of Machida's karate, but you can't deny that he is a brave and tough human being who has used karate as his main weapon for many years.
Very skilled kateka giving excellent body position lesson before using front kick . As far as kata is concerned I have never seen a real fight where the fighters move slowly puff up there cheeks and make strange faces . Kata sissies should only be graded by kumite wins .
I get what he says about not leaning forward but what’s the point. Seems to change the snap of my kick but I get less force into the bag. If it’s a distance management issue this seems more preferential for single sided fighter but if you don’t mind landing back foot forwards why does this matter?
This is mostly a way to hit the opponent with surprise. Your kick surprises him so that he does not have much time to block or react. Of course, as for strength, your kick might be less powerful though still strong enough to cause deep harm to your opponent. Clearly put: this technique is harmful and takes by surprise. Congrats to you for being able to do the technique!
Ueki showed that 'stop kick' as a counter. Basically your opponents body will be halfway to its final position when you strike him. If you used the leading leg, just pick it up, then kick, the distance is right for a stop kick. BUT if you threw a rear leg kick, then the kick would be smothered, too close, UNLESS you keep the body back somewhat, like Ueki shows here.
Really do not understand why this 10th Dan is so important now a days the founder was not 10th Dan even the legendary Nakayama sensei never claimed himself as 10th Dan
