I have also heard from other long time channels, how challenging it is to put out content each time no matter what their schedule. So please gentlemen, take joy in what you do, know that we are enjoying whatever you do, and when the first negative comment comes up, shut it down...don't even look at the rest of the comments. You are not on RUclips to have your spirit crushed or feel defeated about the content. Jason, I would love to see some more of your renovation skills, just like I loved watching Al & Gina building their projects and Ben's when he was redoing their home. Please don't get discouraged. Y'all have a Blessed week.

Sometime back around 2000 I had a young lady who worked for me part time. She was a 19 year old college student, lamenting the fact that she had been craving hot dogs for a few weeks, but her microwave had died and she had no way to cook them. I explained to her that traditionally they are simmered in a pot of water, or they can be gently fried in a pan, or cooked on a stick over an open fire, etc. She was stunned. The next day she was all grins telling me that she and her roommate had finished off a whole package of dogs and one of buns and fixings for dinner the night before. Some people have actually grown up not knowing the rudiments of cooking.

Ok. This is your grandma Speaking to ALL 3 of you!!! Burnout is a real thing. Here is some advice, because I'VE been there, done that!!! If you need a break, give yourself 2 weeks and only do what your farm has to be done. NO VIDEO, NO POSTING. SAY many prayers , several times a day, with family, while out with the pigs, in the barn, in the field...maybe a PLEASE help me to have the strength, give me guidance, patience so I can take care of my family. Ask for us people to keep you in their prayers for the next 2 months. After 2 weeks, put out 1 video, pass the camera on to the kids and let them go for it. After 2 more weeks of 1 video per week, start slowly, DON'T BEAT YOURSELF UP!!! You are Human . Give it to your subscribers, your kids, and REST THAT BRAIN. If you burn out bad, it will hurt the entire family!! For a LOOONG time. Please do this. I beg you. I want you all around! I will be first on the prayer chain for each family. And tell Olivia I miss seeing her. I also relate to her reason to not be on camera. Ben. Please please rest yourself. Tell buggy i want to send her a apron that is in my pile of things to make. Jason, i was praying the entire time during your dark health days. Al, I'm amazed at your knowledge and skills!LOVE YOU ALL!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤. P.S. I'm in Utah, just a little over an hour north of Redmond salt. If any of you want to come this way, let's talk. I have room.

Actually, I think Thomas Jefferson designed the first dumb waiter. When I visited Monticello, there was a big explanation of his dumb waiter and how he thought it up.🌻I love all of you guys, and you post, I watch. The nitpickers have their own issues, nothing to do with you, but with them. And subscribers, stop doing that--these guys work hard to give us content, if you don't like the content don't watch. Be nice, subscribers, be nice.
I'm sorry to hear life and the 'audience' is getting on you, Ben. You owe us nothing, and you're sharing your life with us. I very much appreciate that generosity, and while I understand it also brings you an income, you more than earn that income in so many ways. You're all incredibly hard workers. Thank you for your grace and generosity.

I really enjoy this discussion! I especially appreciate the topic that Ben brought up about feeling guilty for sitting around and not wanting to film EVERYTHING! I am such a consumer... my whole life I have NOT done things that I love because I feel like everyone else does it BETTER than I ever could, it's a weird thing! For example, I love Music and would go to as many LIVE concerts as I could find time for or afford... YET I never took up an instrument or nurtured my singing voice or anything. I was just lazy about it my whole life! So, when you brought this topic up it really resonated with me because I will NEVER be a RUclips content maker ... and I love watching good videos!... So, you all are WAY ahead of a stuck person like me!! BLESS YOU ALL for the amazing content and THIS discussion. and by the way... I feel like I am Family, not a stranger :) Just sayin.

I would love a dumbwaiter. All my canning jars are stored down in the basement, and we take down a box at a time when we go, but sometimes it takes a bit to get them all down there since we don't do much in the basement. The thought of loading up ten boxes and getting them there at the same time is awesome.
Congrats on your new bull, Al! That's exciting 😊

Keep up the great job all of you men. I have fallowed all of you for years now. Al, since Olivia was helping out in the old "basment", Ben since you were in So. Cal. Suburbia. Jason, I had to watch up on your older videos because the algorithm hadn't flipped you into my feed. I saw you on Justin Rhodes initially in 2019-or 20. Hang in there. Like Al said, every form of work gets old sometime. That's the struggle the younger generations are having. They think that everyday you should 'feel fullfilled', when in reality sometime payday is the only thing that keeps you getting out of bed. That and the sad eyes of hungry kids if you don't provide. I appreciate all of you for being roll model for the next generation that needs to see what a good work ethic looks like. Life isn't always fun, sometimes it's just work. 🤪😰
❤ you all. Blessings abundant to each of you & all of your families.

We bought a house that was built in 1820. It has a dumb waiter built into one of the upstairs bedroom closets that went down to a space off of the dining room. Back then it would have been used for everything from laundry to food/dishes, to firewood for the 4 upstairs fire places.

So this what I think.. there are 4 types of youtube viewers
    1. People that are in a similar type lifestyle
    2. People that wish they were in a similar type lifestyle
    3. People that are curious and love to learn about new things
    4. People that are negative, not nice, and everyone who knows them won't have anything to do with them so they leave negative comments on RUclips.
Al the beaver pond finds were super cool! You need to make something with that pointed wood. That was a nice video. Jason, every woman wants a house remodel. Especially the kitchen. I bet some people watched those videos more than once as the dreamed, wishing it was their kitchen. Ben, you have 6 kids and a wife, I think you are tired. It's all those life changes. The build on and the porch, when it's finished, will help. Maybe try writing some goals. Maybe have the boys write some too. Family goal planning. Sometimes you are working so hard at every day life, you forget about long term life. Y'all keep it real and that's what makes it worth watching every Friday.

Ben... Give yourself some grace... Dont film if its something you just wanna get it done.. You treat youtube like its your job. Schedules are good they keep you motivated. You have several good boys who are capable of holding the camera for you. Or set up your camera and you do your thing. We like watching you work on your addition. And dealing with your animals.. And take time off from comments... Schedule comment days. Only read comments on say Mon or Wed... And thats it. I wouldnt reccommend doing it on fri sat or sun. You dont want to ruin your weekend with "troll" comments... But know we continue to watch you all because you have turned your life into your job and we are envious of you even the "bots".... I hope you get to feeling better and gain some energy and motivation... We love you soo much. Wouldnt be here if we didnt.🤷‍♀️ you take care of you and your sweet beautiful family. Thank you for another great Podcast. It's eye opening to hear the discussion about RUclips being your job. As a viewer I think too often we take for granted the amount of work it takes to make a video. Especially in this day and age where everything is filmed, the younger generation thinks that camera just magically follows you around, catching the best angle. I deeply appreciate the effort it takes to give us so much. It's a joy to see every video from each of you. Yes, I am not as interested in everything and yes, I have opinions different from you on certain projects. But that's what it is, my opinion, which I'm entitled to have. You also have the right to your own way of doing projects and I respect that. Dang, wouldn't we be dull if we were all the same, doing things exactly the same. I'm going to single you out Ben because you are going through a rough stretch. Goodness, there's a new baby on top of an already demanding lifestyle. Being open and honest and sharing, I give you huge kudos. For all three of you, sending thoughts of support, whether it be wrestling with culverts, taking on new building projects and new skills, or dealing with the what-the-heck is going on in my life situations. Thank you for being YOU!

I’ve watched you all for years.
    Watched you move.
Watched you learn to raise animals and butchering and gardening and see your struggles and growing pains, successes and not sometimes. I’ve lived the homestead lifestyle for most all of my life but you still teach me new things. Sometimes I leave comments as suggestions but maybe that’s like a criticism to you after reading many of those comments.
Honestly, the comments all sound like dollars adding up. Be thankful for all the comments. Don’t take them as intended to be hurtful. A lot of your viewers are older folks who watch you make some of the same mistakes we/they made. You are refreshingly honest in a world we are finding so fickle. That’s your captive audience. We want you to find satisfaction in just reaching people who need to see something authentic. So take the sweet and the spicy comments as love. Delete nasty if necessary. It’s not you who have given them a negative spirit, it’s a hard disappointment or a German ancestory or whatever, that gets in the way. 👍😝

All three of you are under tremendous (financial) pressure to produce a product on film and I honestly don't see how you do it. It'd drive me nuts! As for content, I LOVE watching construction videos. Let's face it, homesteading isn't just about livestock. It's the whole package: livestock, gardening, building, repairing, birth, death, etc. Your lifestyle is not glamorous nor is it supposed to be, and down to earth folk acknowledge that. We're here because we want to see REAL people dealing with the daily rewards and struggles of modern homesteading. We celebrate with you but we grieve with you too. Many if not most of us live and learn vicariously thru you, so don't ever think your videos don't educate us because most of the time they do! Bonus points for making us laugh. Much love and respect to each of you and your families. God bless you all.

Hey guys! I'm late to comment but I hope you all see it... I'm 75 now. My husband is 11.5 years younger, but we had a homestead going... lots of gardening, 30 hens, meat chickens... then I had a couple little strokes... and my husband was diagnosed with MS....
so in winter of '22, we changed our diet at the recommendation of our doctors. We are now low fat, plant exclusive and gluten free... (it's taken a while to relearn how to cook without oil, but we've done it. We are recovering from many ailments and aches & pains)
BUT I miss the homesteading lifestyle you guys are demonstrating through your videos. I listen and pretend I'm 30 years younger, fit and happy! I love listening to you three guys! You're all special people! Thank you for your time in making videos for us strangers out here!

the inability to initiate a task is a hallmark symptom of depression that everyone with depression experiences as one of their main symptoms. It's the most frustrating thing and it's hard to describe in a way that doesn't make you feel stupid or lazy. It's not either of those, though, it's brain chemistry. Be gentle to yourself. You are worth it. There's no need to bully yourself over not wanting to do something. It's fine. You're fine. We're all fine.

I unsubscribed from several channels because they were suddenly doing that kind of stuff. I also appreciate that while all of you have some sort of side gigs like your merch, building plans, coffee, ect. I had one video that caught on somewhat but mostly I think because every comment I got was telling me I didn't do what they thought I should have even after I explained why I was doing it the way I wanted to. So after falling ill during the garden season last year I never picked the camera back up.

I cook all our meals completely from scratch. I make full meals that serve 4-6 for just my husband and I. We eat the meal and then I put all the leftovers in individual serving meal containers and freeze the individual meals. Once frozen, I take out of the container and vacuum seal the individual meals to prevent freezer burn. I also do this with soups, stews and desserts. Then I use our microwave all the time to reheat our “from scratch meals”.

    • How to sharpen a knife -- yes, I know there are hundreds of videos on this topic. But, I want to know, specifically, how YOU do it. I'm a woodworker (hobby), too, so I have to sharpen plane knives, planer and jointer knives, etc. But, I want your advice on the kind/brand of knives you recommend, then a demonstration of how you sharpen it. I sharpen my pocket knife but it doesn't stay sharp. My knife may be too cheap or have Mexican steel in it. 🙂
    • Guitar -- I would love to watch and listen to Ben playing his guitar, even when he's in the barn. And, if you do make such a video, Ben, just imagine that you're playing for a few--maybe a dozen--good friends. Then, you can let the thousands of "so-what" viewers listen in, as well.
    • Your best CATEGORY of video -- Of all the episodes you've made over the years, is there any particular "theme" that has attracted more viewers? Maybe it's Jason's fence building videos. Or maybe it's the ones when Al and Gina were building their shop and barn. Or, maybe it was some from that crazy chicken you had at the old property.
    • Hands-On Classes -- What are the pros and cons of offering hands-on classes/seminars? If some of your viewers were contemplating offering classes, what advice would you give? How best would you prepare for a class? What about follow-up with attendees after they get home from a class/
I really want to support what y'all are doing, because your weekly videos, as well as your individual videos, are highly anticipated. Yours are the first ones I search for when I get onto the computer each morning!
~Dr. Larry S. Anderson • Tupelo, MS (birthplace of Elvis! -- so y'all come!)

I would much rather cook two small turkeys than one large one. Most people in my family prefer dark meat, so having two turkeys means having a total of four legs. Plus, it takes less time to cook two small turkeys than one large one.
I watch all three of your channels, and usually watch them the same day they are posted. I look forward to them, and enjoy whatever you film. It’s OK if you don’t record every moment of what you’re doing. I enjoy seeing the results of your projects. I enjoy garden tours, “afters” of construction and reorganization projects, seeing freezers full of home-raised meats, pantry tours at the end of canning season, etc. While I do appreciate step-by-step video of some things, like Meg’s recent challah bread video, some projects don’t require in-depth detail. So, if dragging video equipment around bogs you down while trying to work, put the camera down, do the project, and then film the results. If you feel that something needs to be explained, tell us at the end. However, if you’re excited to share the details, by all means, do so. Just don’t feel obligated!

Ben, maybe trying one day a week for a few weeks would help. Or maybe repeat a topic that you enjoyed filming and your listeners did too. Or maybe change your schedule a different way around Elizabeth. Also, sometimes when it's difficult to get going on something, I list the first few things in a task, then I do the first thing. After that, I look at the list and do the next thing. By that time, I usually have enough momentum to complete the task.
Just so you all know, I'm enjoying all 3 of your channels AND this shop talk one as well.

My mother and I used to do 25 to 30 chickens a morning until we had all that we needed to do, out of 125. Every year we had milk bucket that we heated the water in. We had one tub that we put cool water in, we plucked them ourselves by hand. You guys make me feel really bad knowing of how much work we had to do. I’m glad they have knowledge about doing this easier because that was work. And I know other people had it worse than we.

We own a microwave, but hardly use it. As for the dishwasher I use it for glasses, bowls, plates ....... I hand wash my pots & pans and knives. I grew up washing dishes til I was 28 yrs old, truthfully I'd rather wash them all by hand because I know their clean. As for posting videos, do one a week ! I get so excited waiting for the ones I like ! I've been watching ones from UK, Australia that only post once a week. You don't have to worry about losing your followers, we love you guys !! 💕

Our family was very, very large with grandparents and cousins as I was growing up, and I'm 70 now, we always needed a lot of turkey, and we also cooked ham as well. So our turkey needed to be pretty big, so I remember 40# turkeys for every Thanksgiving and Christmas, too. That was almost too large for my mother's pan, but I remember shopping and checking for the largest turkeys in the grocery freezers. I don't believe I've seen any turkeys anywhere in any grocery, weighing in at # 40 big like we used to buy when I was a child.
All of you fellas are the best. I look forward to every "homestead shop talk episode." It is like my boost for the week. Please, please don't ever stop these podcasts. So I'm signing as I'm "your most devoted follower." ❤❤❤

Ben I hope my texts are good to all of you but what you describe is depression and I have had bouts as all of us do. A break in schedule is not a good thing and not always easy to recover from . Medical advice do something do not be idle (that is the devils workshop) and will continue to spiral can become beyond simple. I will be praying but you need to keep on keeping on. This is in no way not empathizing your audience mostly probably doesn't speak so don't dread your friends we are here. Love you all and thank you all so much . Have a new beginning this week Ben thanks Al and Jason for being a friend.

I have struggled with clinical depression all of my life, even as a Christian. Somewhere out there is a book or two about people in the Bible who dealt with depression, and burn out. Really GOOD nutrition helps a lot, but now and then there is an element of chemical imbalance.
Ben, research Rhodiola Rosea as a supplement, and also saffron, and try living Philippians 4:6-8 as a lifestyle. It sounds simple, but 9 years into it as a discipline, I still find challenging, but well worth it. When I first started I THOUGHT I was already praying over everything, but when I examined my anxieties I realized that I wasn't praying over everything, and disciplining my mind to memorize Philippians 4: 8 and follow thise instructions is a real battle, however the rewards are astounding.

I was watching Roots and Refuge. There were lots of comments about Jess having a lot of money. I’ve watch that channel for a very long time, when they didn’t have a lot to do anything with. I think they should praise her for the success they have had. They still have limits. Some people just are jealous or just want to take a jab for whatever reason. I’ve seen this happen a few times now. I have chosen to ignore them as you should.
