The meaning of the video and what was going on ... nobody is really sure, but it was probably tied in with the 'dark side' and 'Chosen 7' lore (Chapter 7 of the Metal Resistance) that they had going on in 2018. They also replaced the Babymetal logo on stage and flags etc with the dark side eclipse graphic that was in this video. The ruined city in this video was also carried on into their next music video for 'Starlight'. That year Yui was suffering an illness or injury that had prevented her appearing at the Legend S shows for Su's birthday in December 2017 and also kept her from touring in 2018. Best guess is that as Yui was still a member of the band but still not fit enough to perform, presumably even in a video, rather than shoot videos with just Su and Moa, for the first time they shot the videos with none of the girls in them ... until right at the end of the 'Starlight' video Su and Moa are shown with 5 other figures (Chosen 7 again). The video for 'Starlight was released in October 2018 on the same day that Yui announced she had decided to leave the band.

1:53 I wouldn't say American titles, but English titles, most of the world isn't U.S. may I remind you :p For instance I'm French, and I've talked with hundreds of foreign BABYMETAL fans since I know this band, either online or IRL (at shows and so on) and we always speak English, cause that's the language most countries understand, but 99% of the people I've talked to aren't American :) So writing English lyrics doesn't mean they necessarily want to widen their USA audience, but just their international audience as a whole, they want to speak to everyone. Also, they did more big shows in UK than in US ^^
As an American, in my travels and listening to foreign music I learn that there are many varieties of English. There's Aussie, Indian, African (varying by country), Canadian, and regional accents in Great Britain and the US. It has become the international language. Some of us thought it might become clearer when they released the Graphic Novel Apocrypha: The Legend of BABYMETAL. It really didn't. : ) The Distortion music video was released in May of 2018. Yui had not been on stage since October 2017. It seems like the BABYMETAL team were still hoping she would be able to return, and they kept her spot open until she decided she needed to leave the group. That was announced on October 19th, 2018. Based on that, it makes sense that the BABYMETAL members aren't featured in the 'Distortion' or 'Starlight' music videos, although Su and Moa appear briefly at the end of 'Starlight'.
What is this 2018 of which you speak? I am not familiar with its existence. It ... Never ... Happened. On Halloween night, 2017, Yuimetal waited in her pumpkin patch (she's a gardener, you know) for The Great Pumpkin to arrive. Guess what? HE DID! And Yui went off with him to give presents and candy to all the good little children that lovingly tend their pumpkin patches. Sort of like an apprentice Great Pumpkin. You've gone through songs in a different order than it's reactors normally do, and as such you "missed" quite a few classics that are not getting recommended enough anymore, so I made a list of amazing things that you haven't reacted to yet (warning, wall of text): - *Su-metal solos:* These are songs that Su sings on her own while Moa and Yui catch their breaths in the middle of a concert. They're generally slower and more expressive, all of them among my favorites. You haven't reacted to any of them, good ones to react to would be *"Rondo of Nightmare (With Mischiefs of God intro)", "Akatsuki (Black Night)"* or *"No Rain, No Rainbow (Legend-S)".* I'd recommend Rondo of Nightmare, it's a classic and a must-watch. > I should note that there's also the "Black Babymetal" songs, sang by Yui and Moa while Su rests, which are really energetic and even weirder than the average BM song. If that is the case, you should upload to another platform (Bitchute is a good one) and make a video linking there. We'll watch the youtube video, like it and comment it as if it was your actual reaction video, and you'll avoid copyright trouble. They even have a song title on Italian Amore=Love, this was the time when Babymetal have their darkest hour, the Kami Band Guitarist Mikio Fujioka just passed away four months ago of the realese of this video and nobody knows what Happen with YuiMetal... Only that she has an injury and again nobody knows that 5 months later of this video came out she gonna left the band... that is why for almost all the fans of this band 2018 was a really bad year, but the 2019 they was like the Phoenix they come back from their ashes more stronger than ever! The titles aren't American, they're British. ;) Seriously, though, you're right: most of Babymetal's early songs have Japanese titles, but as the years have passed and their star has risen around the world, they have used more English titles. Distortion was released in 2018 at a time when the band was undergoing a difficult process of change. (Their beloved guitarist Mikio Fujioka had died in a tragic accident. Moreover, Yuimetal did not appear in live shows, and her status was unclear, although she did not officially leave until months later.) That's why the members don't appear in the video, and they went with a vague apocalyptic/mythic storyline instead. It was not very well received by some fans at the time, and I myself wasn't a huge fan of the song at first, but having seen and heard them perform it live three times (in 2018, 2019, and 2020) I have to say it's a banger.
After Yui Metal left BabyMetal at the later half of 2018, i guess the 7 spirits idea also die along with it replaced by the 3 Avengers in 2019. Only speculating here, i think the additional 4 back up dancers plus original trio was supposed to be the Chosen 7.

The Chosen 7 made their appearance at the Dark Night Carnival at the end of October 2018 - they were Su and Moa with the dancer Saya in the third (and what had clearly been intended to be Yui's) spot and behind each of Moa and Saya there were two more dancers (so the extra 4 in total) and the triangle formation was basically made bigger just for those shows. That was the end of Chapter 7 of the lore along with with the dark side and chosen 7.
Great review! It seems Babymetal has a bit of mystery in every video and Distortion is the most mysterious. But, it came at a time that the future direction of Babymetal was also unclear. Maybe it just represents what they were feeling at the time.
Ah yes another very cool reaction. The first time when I saw this video, I thought it is a trailer of a new JRPG but it wasn't :D And I never would argue about Metal. There was one famous sentence. I think it was from Billy Idol. He said, death metal, trash metal, doom metal, that does not matter, it's all rock 'n' roll to me. I live by those words. I think they are wise words. And you still did not react to "Yousei Teikoku - Astral Dogma" even though when I am the only one who's requesting that song and this band, maybe you can do that in some point just 4 me. Late to the party, but just to chime in about the English in the Japanese song titles -- on one hand, you're right about catering to a world-wide audience (in Babymetal's case). Many of their songs now hold to what I would call English-speaking sensibilities than Japanese. But, English is sort of treated as that spice or hip thing for Japanese songs (in general). It may stem from the fact that the Japanese language has a whole other alphabet meant for 'foreign' or 'loan' words (not necessarily English, there's plenty of French or German words adopted into their daily conversations; though it's not always a one-to-one what the word is in the original language); English is the most prominent of languages in the world today, and so is used more often.

Almost every band has their titles and lyrics in English. Even if the band members speak very little English, it's the most popular language in the world. Some European nations teach it in their schools. I've traveled around southeast Asia and the middle east and almost everyone knew enough English to help you find a bathroom or food. However, Babymetal is not unique, other bands have become famous singing in their own language. Rammstein sings in German. Bloodywood sings half English, half Hindi. Alienweaponry in the native Maori language. The Hu sings in Mongolian
I agree that this came out at a time when Yui was still a member of the band but having a health issue and couldn't perform, and instead of just having Su and Moa in a video that shot this. I think everyone was hoping Yui would get better. Also this came out after Mikio passed so it was a dark time for the band. 2018 was a tough year all around. I don't think you can call Gimme Chocolate Americanised. If you listen to pop and rock music from other countries, use of English in lyrics, song titles, and band names is very common. Even for bands that have no intention of crossing the pond. They spell the name Babymetal using the English alphabet. Using English is cool, so bands do it. What is unusual is Su's use of English in concerts. She speaks to the audience in English, whether in Japan or abroad. Yui and Moa use Japanese at home and English abroad, as do most Japanese artists. Su knows she performs on a world stage.
I'd love for you to do a react video to a lore explanation video. The seven in the video have to do with the chosen seven which is mainly about how for a little while they had five dancers because one of the main 3 members, yui-metal, left the band due to health issues. so there were the 5 extra dancers and the su-metal the lead and moa-metal. nobody really liked this setup though so they moved onto the "avengers series" they now have three dancers that interchange as someone who dances along side Moa but doesn't do any singing. these girls are known as avengers. There is a lot of times a theme of light and dark in babymetal lore "one cannot exist without the other" dark is supposed to be metal, light is supposed to be pop, and theres constantly battles between them and they are constantly won over by one or the other.
Babymetal's lyrixcs have always had a lot of English in them. If anything, I'd say their very first song, Dokidoki Morning, may have the highest percentage of English of any of their songs. It's, like, 40% English. Although, some of the English words are used in a very very Japanese way. I mean, the sentence "Today wa Version Up" only has one Japanese word in it, and it's a particle, but the sentence is indisputably a Japanese sentence, because it makes no sense as an English sentence. Are they putting the English in there to appeal to overseas markets? Maybe partly, but I am pretty sure they're also putting the English in there because it's trendy in Japanese popular culture.

I'm just not digging the melodic and vocal aspects of babymetal - they sound tawdry and way too childish the best, for my ears, japanese heavy sound comes from Bridear. check "Light In The Dark "
@@mrrrka - Fair enough. I listened to that song. It's pretty good. I would like it a lot more without all the screaming. The vocalist is good. A lot of japanese vocalists use a style that is not considered good outside japan. She uses it barely but it's fine. Not annoying like it usually is. The biggest problem is they sound like everybody else. There are a million other bands that sound like that. I'm not weeb. I don't give them bonus points for being from japan.
I couldn’t tell you what’s going on in that video if you put a gun to my head. As for the song itself, I think it could use a little more complexity. Having said that, it’s heaps of fun live, the crowd is always going crazy when it comes up. I absolutely agree about the voices, they just make you feel good. Even without understanding anything, they somehow shower you in positivity. Nobody expects everyone to love BABYMETAL. Most of us fans are the first to acknowledge that they are polarizing. But people denying their talent are just discrediting themselves.

- *Ijime, Dame, Zettai:* A reaction to this is a key part of everyone's journey into BABYMETAL, when you react to this it has to be "live at Sonisphere 2014". The title translates roughly to "Bullying, no more, ever", but the significance of it goes well beyond the song itself. Sonisphere is a metal festival, and BM booked a small stage for their dedicated fans over there, but seeing how people started talking about them (I'm guessing you can imagine why lol) the organizer had a hunch and *moved them to the main stage.* So there they were, about to play in front of ~50k hardcore metalheads, known to throw bottles to bands they didn't like, most of them didn't know them at all and many were there just to watch the trainwreck that they expected the presentation to be. Still, they made magic happen, and you'll see how they managed to turn things around. IDZ was the last song they played there, the moment they became an international band.
- *Road of Resistance:* I feel like you might have mentioned that this one got blocked, it happens a lot lately. If that is the case, you should upload to another platform (Bitchute is a good one) and make a video linking there. We'll watch the youtube video, like it and comment it as if it was your actual reaction video, and you'll avoid copyright trouble. If you actually haven't done it, you're missing out, it's one of the very best and you REALLY should react to it, "Live at Rising Sun Rock Fes." is a safe version to do

The RoR pits at RSR were INSANE! Su calls for the Wall of Death and I think six(?) of them formed up. Good choice.
They even have a song title on Italian Amore=Love, this was the time when Babymetal have their darkest hour, the Kami Band Guitarist Mikio Fujioka just passed away four months ago of the realese of this video and nobody knows what Happen with YuiMetal... Only that she has an injury and again nobody knows that 5 months later of this video came out she gonna left the band... that is why for almost all the fans of this band 2018 was a really bad year, but the 2019 they was like the Phoenix they come back from their ashes more stronger than ever! The titles aren't American, they're British. ;) Seriously, though, you're right: most of Babymetal's early songs have Japanese titles, but as the years have passed and their star has risen around the world, they have used more English titles. Distortion was released in 2018 at a time when the band was undergoing a difficult process of change. (Their beloved guitarist Mikio Fujioka had died in a tragic accident. Moreover, Yuimetal did not appear in live shows, and her status was unclear, although she did not officially leave until months later.) That's why the members don't appear in the video, and they went with a vague apocalyptic/mythic storyline instead. It was not very well received by some fans at the time, and I myself wasn't a huge fan of the song at first, but having seen and heard them perform it live three times (in 2018, 2019, and 2020) I have to say it's a banger.
2018 was a dark year for BM
After Yui Metal left BabyMetal at the later half of 2018, i guess the 7 spirits idea also die along with it replaced by the 3 Avengers in 2019.
Only speculating here, i think the additional 4 back up dancers plus original trio was supposed to be the Chosen 7.

The Chosen 7 made their appearance at the Dark Night Carnival at the end of October 2018 - they were Su and Moa with the dancer Saya in the third (and what had clearly been intended to be Yui's) spot and behind each of Moa and Saya there were two more dancers (so the extra 4 in total) and the triangle formation was basically made bigger just for those shows.
That was the end of Chapter 7 of the lore along with with the dark side and chosen 7.

It seems Babymetal has a bit of mystery in every video and Distortion is the most mysterious. But, it came at a time that the future direction of Babymetal was also unclear. Maybe it just represents what they were feeling at the time.
Ah yes another very cool reaction. The first time when I saw this video, I thought it is a trailer of a new JRPG but it wasn't :D And I never would argue about Metal. There was one famous sentence. I think it was from Billy Idol. He said, death metal, trash metal, doom metal, that does not matter, it's all rock 'n' roll to me. I live by those words. I think they are wise words. And you still did not react to "Yousei Teikoku - Astral Dogma" even though when I am the only one who's requesting that song and this band, maybe you can do that in some point just 4 me. Late to the party, but just to chime in about the English in the Japanese song titles -- on one hand, you're right about catering to a world-wide audience (in Babymetal's case). Many of their songs now hold to what I would call English-speaking sensibilities than Japanese.
But, English is sort of treated as that spice or hip thing for Japanese songs (in general). It may stem from the fact that the Japanese language has a whole other alphabet meant for 'foreign' or 'loan' words (not necessarily English, there's plenty of French or German words adopted into their daily conversations; though it's not always a one-to-one what the word is in the original language); English is the most prominent of languages in the world today, and so is used more often.

Almost every band has their titles and lyrics in English. Even if the band members speak very little English, it's the most popular language in the world. Some European nations teach it in their schools. I've traveled around southeast Asia and the middle east and almost everyone knew enough English to help you find a bathroom or food.
However, Babymetal is not unique, other bands have become famous singing in their own language.
Rammstein sings in German.
Bloodywood sings half English, half Hindi.
Alienweaponry in the native Maori language.
The Hu sings in Mongolian
Trashing other genres of music and bands is so "highschool" people need to get over it. Baby Metal is such a fun band to listen to and watch.

I agree that this came out at a time when Yui was still a member of the band but having a health issue and couldn't perform, and instead of just having Su and Moa in a video that shot this. I think everyone was hoping Yui would get better. Also this came out after Mikio passed so it was a dark time for the band. 2018 was a tough year all around.
I don't think you can call Gimme Chocolate Americanised. If you listen to pop and rock music from other countries, use of English in lyrics, song titles, and band names is very common. Even for bands that have no intention of crossing the pond. They spell the name Babymetal using the English alphabet. Using English is cool, so bands do it. What is unusual is Su's use of English in concerts. She speaks to the audience in English, whether in Japan or abroad. Yui and Moa use Japanese at home and English abroad, as do most Japanese artists. Su knows she performs on a world stage.
I'd love for you to do a react video to a lore explanation video. The seven in the video have to do with the chosen seven which is mainly about how for a little while they had five dancers because one of the main 3 members, yui-metal, left the band due to health issues. so there were the 5 extra dancers and the su-metal the lead and moa-metal. nobody really liked this setup though so they moved onto the "avengers series" they now have three dancers that interchange as someone who dances along side Moa but doesn't do any singing. these girls are known as avengers. There is a lot of times a theme of light and dark in babymetal lore "one cannot exist without the other" dark is supposed to be metal, light is supposed to be pop, and theres constantly battles between them and they are constantly won over by one or the other.

Babymetal's lyrixcs have always had a lot of English in them. If anything, I'd say their very first song, Dokidoki Morning, may have the highest percentage of English of any of their songs. It's, like, 40% English. Although, some of the English words are used in a very very Japanese way. I mean, the sentence "Today wa Version Up" only has one Japanese word in it, and it's a particle, but the sentence is indisputably a Japanese sentence, because it makes no sense as an English sentence.
Are they putting the English in there to appeal to overseas markets? Maybe partly, but I am pretty sure they're also putting the English in there because it's trendy in Japanese popular culture.

@@mrrrka - Fair enough. I listened to that song. It's pretty good. I would like it a lot more without all the screaming. The vocalist is good. A lot of japanese vocalists use a style that is not considered good outside japan. She uses it barely but it's fine. Not annoying like it usually is.
The biggest problem is they sound like everybody else. There are a million other bands that sound like that. I'm not weeb. I don't give them bonus points for being from japan.

I absolutely agree about the voices, they just make you feel good. Even without understanding anything, they somehow shower you in positivity.

Now, about Distortion... Kick ass song. (Here's a tip for ya, the studio tracks use a drum machine.) But if you really want to appreciate it, you have to see a live version. Just not one from 2018. 2018 is ALWAYS off limits. Just pretend that 2018 never happened.
Other than that, the video makes no sense because the plan for 2018 was SHREDDED when Yui dropped out. Don't try to dig too deep into it, there's nothing really to find.
