Excellent first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. Well done on picking a live performance - live BABYMETAL is best BABYMETAL. Allow me to provide a bit of their history. They were formed in 2010 by their producer Kei Kobayashi (Kobametal), a life long metalhead who was so impressed with the vocal talents and stage presence of Suzuka Nakamoto when had seen her performing with her previous Jpop trio. He saw a way of revitalising metal and rock in Japan, which was on a downward trend at the time, by forming a band around her and using the Jpop and Idol systems to bring in a new, young audience who had never been exposed to that kind of music. With Suzuka Nakamoto as the lead, he invented a new genre - a fusion of Metal with Jpop aesthetics and including choreographed dancing as something else rarely, if ever, seen in metal which they called 'Kawaii-Metal (kawaii means cute as in adorable like a box of puppies cute). Suzuka (now aka Su-metal) was 12, her two young friends, who would support her Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) and Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) were 11. They were one of a handful of sub-units of a JPop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin which had a school theme and was for girls with the Amuse talent agency aged 10 to 15 aimed at developing their talents while coaching them on all aspects of entertainment with a view to their progressing their careers in whatever aspect they enjoyed most or were best at. Of the sub-units BABYMETAL was expected by Amuse to be a short lived and failed experiment and was the least commercially viable and likely to be the least successful. They thought Kobametal was mad, no agency at that time would have invested in anything related to metal, so unlike the other sub-units they were provided no extra budget, but they were a passion project of Kobametal and Amuse allowed him to have his experiment under the umbrella of Sakura Gakuin only because there was no financial risk to them. Against every expectation BABYMETAL was the group that took off, gaining their own audience nobody knew would exist and eventually, when Su was 15 and due to graduate from Sakura Gakuin, separating to become an independent band in their own right. That happened in 2013. Yui and Moa provide backing vocals, harmonies, lead chants and basically make sure the whole crowd ... not just the first 10 rows, I do mean the whole crowd right up to the back rows in the balconies at huge arenas, are joining in and being part of the show. Officially their role was described as "scream and dance", but it is key to what makes BABYMETAL unique and one of the absolute best live acts on the planet (and they have international awards proving that is not just my opinion). They lead the audience in what the Japanese call "ai no te" - so when they jump the audience jumps, when they sing their lines those are what the audience sing along with. Sadly Yui was taken ill towards the end of 2017, she missed the 2018 tour (Su and Moa were supported on that tour by two dancers the fans affectionately called Muscle Metal - they were the ones on either side of the stage in this video) and eventually announced she would be leaving the band in October 2018. Through 2019 to 2021 Su and Moa, who chose to continue as a duo, were supported by 3 girls (the Avengers Riho, Kano and Momoko) who took turns dancing, but not singing, in the third spot. When they first started in 2010, and for the next two or three years they would sing and dance with the instrumentals pre-recorded on a backing track. When they started doing their own small shows guys in skeleton suits (known as Babybones) would mime the instruments. When it was decided they would be separating from Sakura Gakuin a little more budget was made available and a live band - the Kami Band, some of Japan's very best session musicians - was gradually phased in playing at a couple of festivals and the encores in a few shows from October 2012. In March 2014 BABYMETAL released their first album and played two big shows at the Budokan in Tokyo and the Kami Band became their full time support for all live shows from then on. They all have their own bands and projects so there will be clashes of dates, so the Kami Band has had many members, but the hard core of about 6 has been constant. You will see these people in most videos - Mikio Fujioka (RIP Jan 2018), Takayoshi Ohmura, Leda Cygnus and ISAO on guitars, BOH on his 6 string bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums. In 2019 for the lengthy US tour there were probably a lot of date clashes and visa issues, so for that and the 2020 UK and Europe tour the Kami Band of the West (American musicians) supported BABYMETAL. 11 years in and they are internationally the most successful Japanese band of all time. There are bigger and better known bands in Japan of course, but they have broken all sorts of records outside of Japan and gained a world wide fan base. They have about 50 songs now and they include songs in virtually every metal genre (power, speed, death, black, folk, prog, djent, thrash, nu-metal etc) but they will also mix many other musical styles and genres in with the metal (ska, reggae, Bollywood, Enka, Latino, EDM, rap, hip hop, Jpop and more) ... usually when you least expect it. Some songs are good hard metal, others lean towards their pop roots and they do everything in between - so there may be a chance some songs may appeal less to you. Don't worry, try another and the chances are you will love that one. The Legend of 1997 live performance of 'Headbanger' would be a good one for your next reaction ... it is an earlier performance and they were younger, but you will see they have always had the quality and talent. Su was born in 1997 so that concert was her 16th birthday celebration in December 2013, Yui and Moa were both 14.

Welcome to the Foxhole 🦊🤘 Unusual live performance clip to start with BabyMetal, but great either way. The Kami Band behind as well are phenomenal elite musicians but you won't see the same members set always. This particular live performance was after YuiMetal left the group and also the outfit dress change drastically but for me they look badass. Their story is nuts, I only knew them from their giant meme success "Gimme Chocolate" years ago and didn't realize how much deeper their discography went. They've hit probably every metal genre in the decade plus they've been around. They started as an experiment/gimmick idea from a producer working at a kids idol group (think: Japanese Mickey Mouse Club, sorta) and the combination of proper heavy metal and j-pop proved to be an unexpected successful combination. They were 11 and 12 years old initially (!) In the early days they were performing to a backing track because there was no budget for live musicians, when you see people in black bodysuits with bones those are performers miming playing. The "Kami Band" started performing with them at live shows, these are highly talented session musicians and in most videos they'll be the guys in white face paint and white funeral robes. They're the real deal and it's what really drew me to this crazy experiment.
Great reaction! It's always good to see people that know to appreciate what BABYMETAL add to Metal. I guess few people can resist a catchy hook, but choreographed dancing to Metal was something that I needed to see first to realize that I needed it. It makes the whole performance so much more entertaining! I would say that by BABYMETAL's standards, Distortion is a relatively "standard" Metal song, there are songs in their catalogue that are much more playful than this. It's not just (J-)Pop they fuse with Metal, you'll also find Waltz, Hip Hop, Reggae, Ska, EDM, Dubstep, Latin and Indian tunes... It never gets boring and is always executed pretty perfectly. If you check out more live performances, you'll also notice two more things: It's not just the drummer who's world class, and the crowd participation is on another level when it's a real BABYMETAL crowd.
I will definitely be checking out more performances! A few people have sent me some recommendations for some great guitar solos in their set so I’ll pick one and have a look at that live with you guys 👍🤘
Stopped by your channel because... BABYMETAL!!! The best LIVE group of the last decade & possibly the best group period! More please!! Arigatou! 🦊🤘 #notacult
Nice reaction. Welcome to the wonderful galaxy of music that is Babymetal. For this performance Su-metal the lead singer was front and center. While Moametal backup vocals, scream and dance was behind Su-metal. They are officially Babymetal. The backup stage Band is known as the Kamiband. These guys are amazing musicians. There's been a lot of musicians in the Kamiband over the years. All of them are just killer on their own instruments. While Su is what the group was built around. Her vocals have the ability to cut right through the metal. Very unusual for a Jpop or any pop sing for that matter. This made her the perfect singer to lead Babymetal. Moa her kawaii angel of love. This is where we start to get what Babymetal is and that's Kawaii Metal. The combination of JPOP vocal lines and melodies along with the metal riffs and drive. That's a nice way to describe the music of Babymetal but in truth it's just the start. Babymetal have found a way to blend genres of music in way far exceeding what was done before them. While their songs have different blends, they still maintain a Babymetal sound to them. Which is fascinating to hear how they make that work. But where Babymetal pulls fans in is their live performances. This video was just a taste of their outstanding performance abilities. Have fun going down the fox whole that is the Babymetal galaxy of music. It really is a happy place. See You
Welcome to THE ONE! Great reaction. As you react (I hope) to more Babymetal, I can only say that at the end of each video you will just be smiling and shaking your head...and your day will be better for it. Enjoy!
As a "Classic Rock Guy", you need to check out their song "Shine". Trust me. It's kind of their "Stairway to Heaven". If you want to see some absolutely insanity in their early years, check out Headbanger Legend 1997, which was recorded in 2013 for Su's (lead singer) 16th birthday concert. When you are watching that video, keep in mind this is the very first arena show of their career. Before this, they had played in venues from 100 people to 1300 people.
Just put that on…………very impressed, with that I can easily place where it is musically compared to Distortion as it is literally out of the symphonic metal camp like within temptation, Delian etc. I’m saving a few with big guitar solos to listen to next week when I do another Babymetal video and then I’m going to dive into their catalogue……..heavily 😂 🤘
If guitar and drum solos is what you want then I highly recommend Rondo of Nightmare (w/ Mischiefs of Metal Gods Intro) LIVE at Budokan Black Night! this will not disappoint you. Also added bonus it is a solo song so just the lead singer is preforming, he name is Su-Metal and you really get a chance to hear how powerful her voice is in the song.
Great reaction, thanks and welcome to BABYMETAL. Unusual choice for a first time watching them, but it's okay... actually it's really good. Some songs tend to polarize people much more than "Distortion" does. But the idea here is clear: mixing any music genre with any metal subgenre. Your BABYMETAL journey is just starting and all their songs are pretty different from the others. So, be prepared to be surprised and always expect the unexpected. I'd like to second the suggestion for this one: "Headbanger" (Live at Legend 1997): ruclips.net/video/QEsOaMbNFww/видео.html
I will bear that in mind and glad you liked the video! As long as it has some solo guitar parts I’m in 🤘 think that’s what would of completed it for me but I genuinely thought it was awesome and so unique!
Good reaction. I second Rondo of Nightmare with Mischief of the Gods intro, and maybe the other big ones from the uk festivals "Ijime,Dame,Zettai - Live at Sonisphere 2014,UK" and "KARATE (live UK Download 2016)"
Glad you liked it! I will be taking some recommendations on some of their stuff with some wild guitar solos but I’ll wait to watch that with you guys in a few weeks 🤘
"I don't know if they're heavy or poppy or what", yes, both, full throttle. What they are better than anyone in the world is balancing pop and metal. They're pretty young, 18 for the lead singer. They both practice hard, and have experience playing large crowds. The drummer, Hideki Aoyama, if a frikkin machine. The growl vocals were provided by Alissa White Gluz of Arch Enemy, on tape here. My favorite line if the song is "Kill all the hypocrates and abandon them". The song is about fighting against the distortion in the world.
Welcome to Babymetal, 3 girls lead singer Su-metal and dance and scream Moa metal and Yui metal. Started 11 yrs ago and now 23 and 24 yrs old. This was 2018 and unfortunately Yui retired from Babymetal due to health reasons late 2017, so her place was taken up by backing dancers. They invented a new genre of metal called Kawaii metal or cute metal, with over 50 songs and 3 albums, with multiple world tours, numerous awards for their live performances and voted number 10 of the top 50 metal bands. Opened for Metallica in 2017 and RHCP, Korn, Guns & Roses, Dragonforce and others, worked with Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Cory Taylor Slipknot and BMTH. Live is best they are show stoppers and their first UK tour was Sonisphere 2014 in front of 60,000 metal heads.
@@thatclassicrockguy9268 Fun fact about Download and BABYMETAL. There is history there. Back in 2015 Andy Copping tweeted out that BabyMetal would not be invited to the festival. As he seemed to think they were a fad at the time. Well, BabyMetal just happen to be on their UK leg of a world tour and decided to come hang out with their friends Dragonforce for the day. Ending up with a surprise performance later that night. There is an interview with Herman (Dragonforce) from that day floating around as well as the tweets. Which are hilarious.
“ABBA meets Slipknot, but in Japanese,” is apt. The BABYMETAL concept is Japanese Idol Pop + Death Metal (and EDM). BABYMETAL have been performing for 12 years. You should go back and watch some of them earlier videos where the girls are indeed girls. I recommend Megitsune (the music video) and Road of Resistance (live).
Very nice reaction. They play their own genre they invented. Kawaii Metal. The Foxhole runs very DEEP with BM. BABYMETAL live is LIFE BABYMETAL FOREVER 🤘🤘🤘
for me a strange choice of song to get to know the band .... but this is subjective, of course. believe me, they will surprise you a lot more.😆 ps they already at the age of 14-12 kept the crowd in their fists
Great stuff. If you like classic rock the closest I can think of by this band is “Kagerou”. Have a look for that (with kami band intro). I think you’ll like enjoy it. The blend of pop & metal is deliberate and works incredibly well. Many of their songs go VERY heavy while others are lighter but they have literally no bad songs. Su, the lead singer, is as you will discover in a class all of her own. Even better they are the loveliest young women in rock; real sweethearts. The band are simply out of this world.
You are very right, people hardly know that to perform at such level, you need to work really hard. The main singer is indeed young, early 20s but she already sing as a professional for more than 15 years, remind me of Michael Jackson. As for the band they're among the best in Japan.
I was so impressed with how tight the whole band sounded………they sound like top seasoned pros and the music is superb, still getting my old classic rock/metalhead around it 😂
Abba meets Slipknot.... an inspired analogy: but would that combo actually be as successful as BABYMETAL??? .....especially if all the songs were sung in Swedish! lol Really great first reaction to BABYMETAL....please do lots more!!! Btw you have a new subscriber!.... and I've included your reaction in my "BABYMETAL New Reactions" playlist.... ......check it out on my channel :)
At this time, Su was 20 and Moa was 18. The crowd would do whatever Su wanted, but unfortunately at this time there was not enough time for the mosh pit to gain galactic proportions.
If you want to hear the musicians doing solos then I would recommend Rondo of Nightmares with Mischief of the Gods intro. Its a Sue solo song but still Babymetal at its finest 👌
If you do more reactions to them, I encourage you to stick to their live performances. BABYMETAL formed in 2010. Essentially, they were a “club” at their performance training school. Made up of three pre-teen girls (the lead being the oldest) they were described as Cute Metal. Their early tracks were pop-metal, and were age appropriate. So they sang about eating chocolate, bullying, playing hide and seek etc. The lead was 20 at the time of this performance. This song is off their third studio album. If you do react to their earlier stuff, you will clearly see it often has more of an emphasis on cute stuff, which makes sense because of their age. It’s still very good.
ESP: So Isao, how many strings would you like on your guitar? Isao: Yes! Great first reaction my friend. You're in for an absolute treat with Babymetal. Thank you for the reaction. 🦊🤘🔥🖤

They're the real deal and it's what really drew me to this crazy experiment.
Thanks for the info………….i didn’t realise it was such a phenomenon! I’ll be looking at more of their stuff very soon!
See You
Thank you, I was honestly blown away and that takes some doing with me 🤘
@Steve Chevy Well said!
BABYMETAL FOREVER
🤘🤘🤘
Welcome to THE ONE! Great reaction. As you react (I hope) to more Babymetal, I can only say that at the end of each video you will just be smiling and shaking your head...and your day will be better for it. Enjoy!
Thank you, much appreciated 👍 I will be, I feel I need to hear what the guitar solos are like now 🤘
New babymetal video posting tonight 🤘
Great first reaction to BABYMETAL! keep them coming!🤘🦊🤘
Thank you! I certainly will 🤘
I’ve just watched them do a couple of tracks live with Halford from Priest……….WOW 🤘
Nice 👍
@@thatclassicrockguy9268 Guitar solos are not going to be a problem 😁
They certainly are full throttle! Can’t wait to see more but I’ll save that for a video next week 👍🤘
More 🙏
It's Kawaii Metal, they invented it, it is BABYMETAL...
Thank you for the info! It’s certainly different from anything I’ve heard before and loved it 🤘
@@thatclassicrockguy9268 Fun fact about Download and BABYMETAL.
Enjoyed your reaction. Hope to watch your continued journey with these amazing young ladies and their Kami Band.
Thank you very much 👍thank you for joining the channel
the genre is called kawaii metal
Would be good to react to their first song Doki Doki morning which they recorded age 11 and 12
“ABBA meets Slipknot, but in Japanese,” is apt.
BABYMETAL live is LIFE
BABYMETAL FOREVER
🤘🤘🤘
Welcome to the Fox hole. It's a confusing place sometimes , but is fun .( Most of the Babymetal fans don't know what ABBA is )
That’s probably true but ABBA meets slipknot is the closest thing in my musical catalogue I could think of 😂
for me a strange choice of song to get to know the band .... but this is subjective, of course. believe me, they will surprise you a lot more.😆
ps they already at the age of 14-12 kept the crowd in their fists
Great stuff. If you like classic rock the closest I can think of by this band is “Kagerou”. Have a look for that (with kami band intro). I think you’ll like enjoy it. The blend of pop & metal is deliberate and works incredibly well. Many of their songs go VERY heavy while others are lighter but they have literally no bad songs. Su, the lead singer, is as you will discover in a class all of her own. Even better they are the loveliest young women in rock; real sweethearts. The band are simply out of this world.
Its *'KAWAII METAL'* Dude!!
Put your Kitsune UP!! Po!
You are very right, people hardly know that to perform at such level, you need to work really hard. The main singer is indeed young, early 20s but she already sing as a professional for more than 15 years, remind me of Michael Jackson.
As for the band they're among the best in Japan.
I was so impressed with how tight the whole band sounded………they sound like top seasoned pros and the music is superb, still getting my old classic rock/metalhead around it 😂
*Kawaii Metal".
50 songs, multiple versions, all of them "wtf' first impressions.
Kitsune Dao!
Thank you 🙏
I'm subbing for more Babymetal reactions! I truly enjoyed this one! 🤘🦊🤘
Thank you 🤘🦊
"I don't know if it's poppy or heavy..." Us: Yes. :p Welcome to the Fox Hole. 🤘🦊🤘
They never try impress anyone, just making people confused is already mission success, Watching them generate sparks in the brain 🤣🤘🦊😁
Not Pop-Metal, nor Metal-Pop... it's BABYMETAL. 😎😎😎
Great reaction. Check out Ijime Dame Zettai live at Sonisphere 2014 official. You might enjoy that. It’s their start of world domination 🔥🦊🔥
At this time, Su was 20 and Moa was 18. The crowd would do whatever Su wanted, but unfortunately at this time there was not enough time for the mosh pit to gain galactic proportions.
🍅💀🍅
🤘🏼🦊🤘🏼
If you want to hear the musicians doing solos then I would recommend Rondo of Nightmares with Mischief of the Gods intro. Its a Sue solo song but still Babymetal at its finest 👌
Great! I will have a listen, thank you!
@@thatclassicrockguy9268 "Catch Me if You Can", And "Yava" also have great Kami Band solo intro's as well.
I'm throwing some Syncopation in.
🤘🤘🤘

Agreed Rondo is amazing all around
Since you didn't put it in the title, I just wanted to point out that the song's name is "Distortion", and that this was live at Download 2018 :)
I’ll drop that in the description 👍🤘
In the title now 👍
🤘🦊🤘
Look out for the circles
ESP: So Isao, how many strings would you like on your guitar?
Isao: Yes!
Great first reaction my friend. You're in for an absolute treat with Babymetal. Thank you for the reaction. 🦊🤘🔥🖤
😂 I’ll take 6 but i Think he likes 7 or 8 haha
@@thatclassicrockguy9268 I think that one is an 8 string... And the Bassist (Boh) with a 6 string Bass.
@@thatclassicrockguy9268 And then they break out the 9 strings for BxMxC
@that classic rock guy may find himself becoming totally immersed in Japan bands. You've opened the Shoji screen and found Babymetal. A a vast journey awaits plunging head-long into the Foxhole. Your journey will take you to Sakura Gakuin (Cherry Blossom) where Babymetal originated. You'll receive a multitude of Babymetal recommendation; watch live show, where Babymetal shows their best. Recommendations will follow for a wide-range of other Japanese female groups / bands. With an open mind you'll discover a new world of music.
Looking forward to the journey……….first time I’ve been blown away in ages, still floored now 🤘
Well done on the reaction, and welcome to the awesome, and often surprising, world of Babymetal! If you want to see a bit more of the band, check out "Rondo of Nightmare, with Mischiefs of God Intro" - ruclips.net/video/8WBDiLMNZcE/видео.html. Looking forward to more!
Thank you! 🤘
😆😆😆🤘🤘🤘
> "They sound a little bit like ABBA meet Slipknot..."
Well... Not the worst description of their sound I've ever heard. Also, absolutely nothing to be ashamed of if you ask me.
It was the first thing that came to mind 😂
abba meets slipknot muhahaha
😂🤘
❤️🔥

Is that a '74 Telecaster Custom on the wall behind you?
Good video! You should make a video on how you make your videos and thumbnails! It would be interesting to see. The band reminds me of DragonForce. We could get 1000 this year. Lets keep racking up the channel!
I’m still learning how to do those and trying to make them better 😂 appreciate the support and glad you like them 🤘
I saw these about 4 years ago, they opened for the chillies at the NEC .. they killed the crowd, it was really bizarre, someone told me that joey jorderson manages them, don’t know how true that is
That must have been awesome!……..they looked pretty blinding live 🤘🤘
The drummers there
@@JamesCook-xp2wg insanely good mate
ABBA meets slipknott, you nailed it bud
@@JamesCook-xp2wg first thing that came to mind 😂
Su-Metal leadVocalist, and MoaMetal ( Scream and Dance ). both came from a J-Idol background.
To me it’s a mix of Children of Bodom meets pop
I don't get it, you enjoyed this music but only reacted two of their songs?
