Ive owned my 1098 for 12 years. As much as I’ve wanted to upgrade to a newer bike, everytime I hop on my 1098 it just blows my mind how much brute force, how smooth and how you are really riding a wild animal.

    SureFlex slipper clutch

    MFW Master Grip Footpegs

Rode the 1098 at Mosport & Calabogie Ducati Club of Canada track rallies (road courses in Ontario, Canada) back when they were new. Bikes were set up as they came from the factory. I recall thinking they were just about perfect. Suspension was excellent, tracked well over bumps, easy to 'spool up' the rear tire & leave a stripe powering out of the apex while still fully leaned over (no, I'm not good enough to leave a similar stripe with the front going in!).
For me, 20lbs heavier & 4" taller than you, it was not a bike that required a lot of wrestling or muscle to extract the most out of it, and it responded well to minor rider inputs. It was also not a bike you could learn much about on the street, other than it was 'throw me in jail' fast. Did a test on public roads with it, and never got the throttle more than 1/2 open, well maybe once or twice, but never wfo.
I do agree, it's one hell of a hoot to ride on the track, and it really does feel like a living thing when you're givin' 'er. Like most Ducatis.

I have ridden both. I short: the Panigale 959/V2 is much easier and predictable. It gives you confidence right away. Whereas the 1098 has a learning curve to get confident enough (or grow the balls) to ride is fast.

It's like riding an early monster or SS half the fun is the sound of the bike the other half is that as fast as some of the bigger ones could be it was all on you no modes or wheelie control or even ABS ,you whisky throttle it at the wrong time and you'll pay with a trip to the emergency room .It actually takes some skill to go fast which riders gained the long way through riding or the hard way by crashing .Which is why you'll find a lot of old Duc's have been down once usually not to hard if the owner is still selling it but a lot have hit the pavement to encourage a sale . I have to admit though the sound of an air cooled Ducati engine with good exhaust cans on a Mt road at full chat is one of the sweetest sounds you'll ever hear except maybe downshifting the same engine even though I can probably actually go faster down the same road on my newer Duc it's just not quite the same experience . Or maybe I'm just old and you kids should just keep heading toward sterile but extremely fast Elec motorcycles since bikes are such horrible polluters and get such terrible mileage even the old ones .

I’ve owned my 1098 S for almost 9 years. It was one of those bikes that I said “I will own one someday.” I also went from a 2008 Aprilia RSV1000R which is a fat pig compared to the 1098. Never had a chance to track her yet, it’s been years since I’ve been on the track but riding a bike like that and then jumping on my friends 959 panigale was like night and Day. It made me feel like I was a pro at riding bikes lol. The panigale seemed nothing in comparison to the 1098. My bike was set up for racing so I believe it has a racing ECU tuned to 152 hp st elevation (I live 5k ft above sea level) So when I brought it down to sea level felt like a whole new monster.

I love, it's not stock, it's not a ride around town machine. It likes open road and tracks. From memory I believe it's been jumped up to 177 hp 102 torque, I could wrong it's been awhile since I last looked at the don't sheet. I always hated the mirrors, now after seeing it they design makes sense. Still they are absolutely unless.

I would love to take my 2009 Aprilia RSV1000R Factory to the track here in northern California but I can't afford to right now.
Having NEVER been on a track day I'm sure I would have my hands full due to the lack of electronics. It's just like the 1098 in terms of being analog and that's why I bought it when I did 7 years ago. I didn't (and still don't) want any on-board helpers; I want to feel everything.
140-ish hp and 80-ish lbs/ft of torque would probably give a newbie track rider, like me, their money's worth. I can't wait til I can get out there and try it.
    Kool video!

RAW is a great description. The power and the torque is like a drug. I’ve got 33K on mine and it still runs like a scalded dog. I’m going to keep riding it it until it blows.

Aaaaah the end of Ducati's glory days. After that generation until the early 10's nothing would ever be the same. That's why I bought a Monster 1100 Evo (very different bike I know but I'm a street rider and use my bike to commute too). Such a fantastic bike on every level and one of the last dream Ducatis for me. More recent ones just don't do the same thing for me and once the emission restrictions reach the year of production of my model here in France and I won't be allowed to use it on the city daily I'll be very sad. I really don't know what my next bike will be to be honest...

When you say you "dialled in" as much preload as you could, does this mean you removed all the pre load from the rear spring?

    • @greyanaroth

    • @matallen32
      @matallen32 3 года назад

@@yammienoob I thought as much. What are the front springs like. I bought a 899 and found the standard front springs woefully soft . I weigh 85kg (187) in gear and had to add 50 out of 60 clicks of preload to get even close to 40mm of total sag (rider + static) yet the rear is so over sprung with all pre load removed I can't get any static sag and only 25 mm total. Stiffer front springs helped immensely.

@YammieNoob please do something about DUCATI STREETFIGHTER 848 2014, it’s a wonderful thing also, just bought it this autumn and didn’t have a chance to try it on track. And what’s interesting it’s the same dynamics as on 848 evo, seating position very aggressive in that case, it’s like a sports bike, but wothout plastics, crazy thing to ride also, kind of raw, it has DTC, but if you turn off that thing.. So it would be interesting to see you test it out. Great content, following you for a very long time and always happy to see new vids 👏🏼

Not impossible, you just don’t have the skill to master it. Hell, unless you’re a professional racer, I don’t think it’s possible to push your machine to its limit. Motorcycles, especially from the 2000’s on, have amazing engineering.
