Wow, thanks for bringing back some great memories! I had a 2 door 73 Montego MX with the 351 Windsor. It had a forest green exterior with a white vinyl roof. The interior was dark green and it was straight forward bench seat with the split back to aid in entry to the rear. It only had 30,000 miles! I bought it after I graduated high school in 1979 and got my first real job (apprentice electrician). I bought it used from my uncles who owned a Ford/Mercury dealership in Humboldt Saskatchewan, Canada. I lived in on a farm with my parents at the time where many of the roads were gravel and we had long cold winters (40 Below). This car was considered a mid-size but it sure did handle the gravel roads at 70 miles and hour too! (dumb teenager!) and cold winters. Also the big sprawling interior was a bonus with hanging out with friends and going on 'booze' cruises. (I know, dumb teenager....but this was the seventies) I lent it to my older brother at Christmas time, for his truck was in the body shop, so he could take his girlfriend out on a date. It never came back...he rear ended another car and totaled it! Everyone was OK, but I lost my Montego! I occasionally look for one to buy, but they are very rare now so I doubt it will happen. Again, thanks for the video and memories. Take care!
Hey Clayton - thank you for bringing back such wonderful memories of my 1973 Montego MX Brougham. It was a 2 door - forest green - Black interior - with a black rear quarter vinal top and moonroof also the same motor as yours with a 4 barrel. I ordered my car from Wesley Motors in Monit North Dakota when I was in the Air Force stationed at Minot AFB. It did have an AM/FM radio with 8 track and every bell and whistle offered by FOMOCO. I loved that car. The ride was similar to the Continental Mark IV. It was a pleasure to drive and own.
In 1977 I was a sophomore in high school & bought a1974 Mercury Montego MX 2-door with 40,000 in mint condition for $1000. It then had a high Bluebook of 2500. It was a solid deep dark bronze hardtop with brown interior & white seats. Front seat was bench with headrests. it had a 302 2-barrel & emission standards tuned it down to 140 net horsepower. The engine was bulletproof dependable & got great gas mileage; probably the best car I ever owned. I miss it sorely!
the Montego was a cruising vehicle. it was basically mercury's variant of the Thunderbird\ Torino. it was a well-known car for its good handling and speed for its size.
My dad had a 72 Montego mx when you cranked it up man that brought back great memories. It was baby blue with a dark blue vinyl top. Got to drive it when dad got his new Mark V.
Your car looks good an sounds great. l had a yellow 73 with white top ,all white seats and a 351 Windsor. As cool as they are today and wish I still had mine but there was much cooler muscle cars to build back then. Thanks for not crushing her✌
I had a ’72 Montego, white with a blue interior. Bought new, in 10 years I drove it 90-something thousand miles, and it never let me down. Mine was a 351 Windsor, there were 6 choices of engine that year. It was custom ordered by a customer who didn’t purchase it, and I got a good deal from the dealer. It had some of the Police package, a very heavy duty alternator, a transmission oil cooler and more. I moved several times with the car packed tight and heavy, sometimes with a trailer, through the mountains and deserts, with never an issue. Most of my friends had little cars, and it was great to fit 6 of us in for a road trip. I reluctantly traded it in, because the higher-compression engine did not like the then-new unleaded gas, and redoing the heads would be expensive. Wish I still had it.
I had a 1974 Mercury Montego back in 1991. Mine was blue and had a bench seat and the automatic shifter was on the steering column (no console). Driving that car took some getting used to because, as in the video, the hood was like six feet long. I really liked it. My dad inherited it from his brother (my uncle) who passed and he gave it to me to drive when I went away to college. Mine also had a 351 but I believe it was a 351 Windsor. Unfortunately either the rings or the valve seals were worn because it went through a court of oil about every 200 miles. It only got around 12-18 mpg but gas at that time was only about $1 a gallon, so no problem. Nowadays this would cost a fortune to drive as a daily driver.
Beautiful car. I had a 1972 Montego MX. My dad bought the car new and I can still remember the new car smell like it were yesterday. Green with a white vinyl top. Green bench seat. I see your dome light is the standard dome light. Ours had the courtesy light group with had the center dome light and map lights too. You also got a trunk light, under hood lights and footwell lights. My 1972 Torino has the basic dome light like yours. The Montego had a single dash speaker with the AM radio. The Torino has a rear speaker too with the AM radio. My 72 Torino is exactly the same as my Montego on the inside down to the color My Montego had the electric clock and the Torino does not. My Montego had a remote drivers mirror like yours. The Torino has a roll down the window and adjust the mirror. You could get a color keyed steering wheel and seat belts as optional equipment. My 1972 Pinto had color keyed interior. This is the first time I've heard of factory two tone vinyl top delete. My Torino didn't have a vinyl top from the factory so I had one put on. Made the car look great. The mouldings are different then vinyl top models so I had to go to a wrecking yard to get the proper mouldings of a doner Torino. Both have the 351 V-8. Auto trans and A/C. When the A/C works it blows ice cubes. And yes you could order the optional sports gauge package on non GT models. I had a friend who had a 72 Montego MX formal top like what you and I have. His had bucket seats with floor shift, sports gauge package, dual sport racing mirrors and AM/FM stereo. Montegos were very common in the 70's. Most of the 72's were green it seemed like, at.least to me. My friends uncle had a 73 MX Brougham that was the same color as yours with a brown vinyl top and brown interior. That was one sharp looking Montego. Side note. I am probably one of few who thinks the 73 Montego looks really good with the big bumper in front. Starting in 74 rear bumpers grew to 5 mph and made the car look heavier the the 72 and 73's. I have 15 inch Magnum 500's on the Torino and they look fantastic. Sorry this was so long winded, but I am a huge fan of Fords and Mercury from the 70's.
I had the exact same car for about 4 years back in the ‘80’s - 1973 Mercury Montego MX with the 351 Cleveland, though mine had the bench seat and vinyl roof, which I painted white so it looked more like yours. I liked the style and the feel of the vehicle wrapping around you when inside, but even with only 60,000 miles on the engine it was a NIGHTMARE of constant repairs and breakdowns. Still, I’d love to have one again.
Very nice car and a great vintage. The instruments were beautiful in those years. Very attractive styling and starting in 72 they went back to body on frame which is much better for easier restoring and nicer ride quality (isolation from road irregularities). Big Merc fan.
Clayton Rivait im not a ford guy but me dad gave me my first car and it was a 75 elite. Of course i was young and blew it up but after he passed away i purchased another one because it helps me remember the memories we made
I bought new 1973 Montego MX 2 door similar to yours. Loved car . Wish I had bought GT version though but I did love car. Put 8 track in it and rwl tires. Paid 3,600 for it new in 73.
Great vid young man very well done.Youre Dad Im sure is bery proud of youre presentation. A really awesome car that you just dont see ANY WHERE anymore, mores the pity.Again thank you and sounds terrific
My dad had a 1974 Mercury Cougar XR7 351 2v loaded with all option Wimbledon white w/tan interior plush floor carpet full instruments gauges it was my first car I learn to drive and got to use it for work , 351 Cleveland was best on the highway luv to breath shows it true colors
Dude....The word you were looking for is "VINYL". Instead of a "VINYL TOP" you have a painted top. A friend had a 1972 "MERCURY MONTEGO MX BROUGHAM" with PHILCO FORD four speaker stereo/8 Track Tape. Had four speakers one on each door and two on rear shelf. Dome light had three lights in one with a map light on both sides. Thick shag carpeting, overstuffed cushy vinyl seats, cushy door padding. Entire car was dark brown.
My first car was a 73 Mercury Montego . But it had a Windsor. It was an ugly seafoam green color. I pulled into the gas station and checked the gas and filled up the oil. I paid 250. For it at a bank repo auction. Finally flipped it upside down in a ditch . Put two quarts of oil in it , kicked out the windshield and used it on the back road we lived on to hunt rabbits. When it finally gave up I sold it for 20 bucks.
I do remember a 72 Montego MX Brougham with the 351 Windsor my buddy had drank 2-3 quarts of oil weekly and it never smoked or leaked. Couldn't find out where the oil was going even though car ran great.
This is my favorite car of all time. My parents purchase a demo to save a little. I believe it had 260 miles on it. It was a 1973 2 door Mercury Montego Brogham. I was just turning 16 so it was my first driver. Two years later they gave it to me for graduation. The 118 inch wheel base made it ride as nice as a Lincoln or Montery with only 6 inches more. To me it is the best sporty style luxury car ever made. The optional Cleveland engine would not compete with muscle cars in a race but it would take the initial lead for the first 1/8 th of a mile than almost all of them around back then. It was best for times of needing to pass a slow driver on a two lane road. Since it was a demo it came with all of the options. It was the best looking imo with the dark metallic green (ivy I think) and the beige model top. I'm not sure why but on each side behind the rear windows where the vinyl drops was the emblem the only read Brougham instead of MX Brougham. Also the vinyl wasn't spilt in the rear like many. A great car I'd like to own again one day.
The Montego was a mid-sized car; the 2 door was 114 wheelbase and the 4 door was 118. I always liked them. This is a rare example. The ought to get the Marti report on it and share another video.
1975 was the first year for "Duraspark" electronic ignition replacing the old "Points and condenser" system, anything before 1975 has the old system...
I had that same car in med.gold metallic; my first car in 1978. Also known as 'Babyshit Brown'. Ran it into the ground then gave it to my sister to finish the job. She blew the motor @ 121k. Wasn't enough left of it to rebuild and the junk yard gave me $50 for it.
It is a rare car I had the 72 t bird with the 429 pretty quick for not so high horsepower I had the 69 Lincoln mark 5 with the 460 that put out 365 hp but mine was hoped up it put out 470hp car was no joke
Yes I've seen all three types of those cars myself. I'm from Florida originally to myself I live in indiana now though. My uncle rebuilt one.& we had it for about A year cause the transmission wen't so my parents sold with another transmission to go with it aswell. The problem was it needed A different pilot bearing than what was inside of it. At the time it was the original type of pilot bearing it needed A after market one for the other style of transmission replacement we got for it. It came with the c6 tranny& I do believe we A either one of these two types as the replacement one C4.,or C8. Is what I'm thinking it was possibly A new version of the C6 maybe. With the 351 Cleveland engine aswell. It was repainted three colors burgundy& baby blue& purple. It was more like burpple looking to me. Something like A?dark grape color it was.

I love it...you can take those buzzers out quite easily.
Tru good to know do you know how to take them out ?
