I had 1975 Mercury Cougar XR7 with that identical gauge cluster and dash design with the same buckets except it had the automatic floor shifter with console. Leather Interior was dark red with power windows, Philco Ford 4 speaker AM FM Stereo with factory 8 Track full power with the Cleaveland 351 2V V8. Miss that boat. She was a smooth cushy classy highway cruiser that floated along that never felt any bumps.
Went down the RUclips rabbit hole on the Montego GT. Great video! I bought my 1973 Montego GT when I was stationed overseas (London) in the USN. Wimbledon White with black bucket seats and the factory Hurst 4 on the floor. 351-CJ engine. Drove it until 1985 and put it in the barn. It is still there. 135,000 miles and the engine ran great. But the body was just starting to go so I stopped driving it. I really should get the old girl restored and have fun with it. I just turned 80 - so too old to work on it myself. Here in Maine there's very few if any shops that will take on a full frame off restoration. So she sits.
@@loucostabile Lou, it's not that I don't want to get the car back on the road. But there isn't anywhere to get the work done here in Maine that has a decent reputation. I'll have another go and start looking for a reputable place to do the work. It's been 10,15 years since I last tried to find a quality shop. Wish me luck! Jerry Williams

I bought a '76 Cougar new when I was a senior in high school with a 351 W. Black with white half top and white interior and the same full gauge dash. Best dash layout of any car I have ever owned. My first upgrade was ditch the single exhaust for the dual's with turbo flow mufflers. Sounded almost the same as this one...all be it with less lug and OOMPH. But still an unbelievable cruiser and road trip car. Wish I still had it. My wife needs to win the lottery so I can re-create my Baby! Hi Lou, I appreciate this car, just for the fact it survived. They weren't that common when they were new, but you would see a lot of Gran Torino Sports, the Ford version. The owner is right in that most rotted out, as they were known for rust problems Thanks for posting.
I remember those from the brochures, but I never saw one at our local L-M dealership. Ford later used that gauge cluster on 74. 75, and 76 Cougars. It was also used on 77 - 79 Cougars and Thunderbirds with the Sports Instrumentation Group.
Lou, I always make time for Montegos. There is nothing like a 70s Mercury 'Intermediate' . I guess this specific model was made for people who were not quite cool enough for a Cougar ;)
Hi Right Lane Hog, "I guess this particular model was generally made for people who were not quite cool enough for a Cougar ;)" Thank you for making me laugh out loud :-) Lou
My friend had a 1972 Montego he had put a GT front end on it, and 400. I remember making out in the back seat with my girlfriend at a drive-in movie. I ended up buying the car from him. Great car, great memories. Thanks

HEY LOU! I was 11 years old when this was new and I NEVER SEEN one either. I hardly remember the Montego until 1983 when I had a friend who droves his dads hand me down Montego Sedan.
Owned a 76 Montego with a 351 Windsor along with a shift kit and it wasn't the easiest on the eyes even being in mint condition.. Lol! Car had balls though!
David ,the Silver Fox, Pearson won a Daytona 500 in a crazy finish with the King, Richard Petty driving a Montego of this vintage. Like these big fastback Mercs! Thanks Lou!
I remember as a kid watching the Lincoln-Mercury commercials with the cougar growling from atop the L-M sign, and I remember seeing a pretty good number of these Montegos around, but I can't say I recall ever seeing a fastback Montego back then. In fact, I don't think I was even aware they existed until I was well into adulthood. It's so ironic, here is this sleek, sporty attention-getting car that few people know about. But I'm sure glad Mercury did make them, however rare, and it's pretty exciting to see this one on display. BTW, you should meet the president of the International Station Wagon Club, which I belong to (and from which I drew my username, 27 is my membership number). He has an excellent 1974 Montego MX Villager in Bright Red. Yes, sir, "The sign of the cat" was a great place to be in the '70s!
I almost didn't take a look, but this is a find. I don't particularly like any year Mercury, even though I had a 54 Merc in 56, but this one is very nice, well cared for and unique. Exhaust sound was unexpected, but enjoyable. It is great that he shares the car.
HI Old Town, Happy to read you took the time to look at this car and enjoyed reading the details you liked. Nice to find out you had a 54 Merc too, Lou
@@loucostabile Can you imagine how amazing it would be going back in time and buying a few different cars of your dreams, built exactly to your taste color, etc....
Fantastic condition. Those were good cars. I had several cars built on that platform. Torino's, Elite's, Thunderbirds...etc..etc. But this one is rare.
I didn't realize GTs ever came with that steering wheel. My dad's '73 Montego 4 door has that same wheel, but my '72 GT and my '73 GT both have 3 spoke wheels. I assumed that was standard for all of them.

Lou, you're like a bloodhound, sniffing out all these cool low mileage, one owner creampuffs. This one super cool. Ford's build quality, was still pretty good, at this point. This beast would eat up the highway miles, without even breaking a sweat. JT

@@loucostabile Years ago in my high school Vocational Auto Shop Class 1977-1979,one of my classmates had one similar to this one.Same color. No Magnum 500 wheels.I thought it was a little rough at the time.Had no idea of such low production vehicle this was at the time. This was in Greenville,Mi.It seems to me I read that the Magnum 500 wheels were not available as an option on these Montego GT's as they were on the Gran Torino Sports in particular.I think the Magnum 500 wheels look great on many automobiles, however, they look fantastic on the Montego GT.Really sets them off!
Every time I see a 73 GT i kick myself in the ass ! Back in 1984 I was driving past a farm house in lower Michigan and spotted what appeared to be a fastback Torino sitting behind a garage surrounded by tall weeds. After a couple of weeks I passed by again and I saw the owner mowing his yard and I stopped and asked him about the Torino. He was very nice and said it was not a Torino but an old mercury his son had bought back in the mid 70s and parked it back there when the clutch burned up. Being a gearhead the thought went through my mind and I asked him you mean it is manual shift and he said yes it had a factory four speed and a real big engine . I asked him can I have a look and he said yes and we walked back there through the tall grass and I saw a bright red fast back with mach 1 scoops and fell in love . It was a little rusty around the bottom of the fender front and rear but that did not phase me .he opened it up and the black interior was spotless .buckets and consoled 4 speed shifter . He opened the hood and that was the first time in my 18 years I played my eyes on a 429 big block ford . I was hooked I asked him if it was for sale and he told me he had to ask his son who was away living in Illinois a whole state away .I looked over the car for a hour with the father and talked about cars and hunting and fishing and whatever and I left giving him my parents phone number to reach me by. About a month passed by my mother told me a man called about some car I looked at and he wanted to know if I still wanted to buy it and I called the number he left and he told me his son said 600.00 and it's yours .This was a lot of money back in 84 and I only had saved up 275 in my savings .I explained to him I really want the car but it would be some time before I could come up with the full 600.00 . He said well when you get it it will still be here. At the time I was picking apples for a local farm that made me 150 a week if I put in 10 to 12 hours and every week I would add half of that to my savings and plus I was driving a Celica at that time on of my friends wanted long story short when I was 250 dollars short of the 600.00 I sold the Celica and bought the montego. Me and my cousin towed it home and my dad freaked out because I bought the car against his wishes but to me this was the coolest thing me and my friends ever layed eyes on .my neighbor saw the car a few days later and stopped to ask about it .He like the car and when he opened the hood he really liked even more.he asked me if it ran and I told him yes but the clutch was out of it. He asked me if I would sell it to him and I said no I want to fix it and drive it. Well a whole year passed by and I don't have to tell you although I tinkered with it I never got around to fix it and lost interest. I went to my neighbor and told him 600.00 and it's yours and he only had at the time 200.00 and a Suzuki dirt bike. Yep you already know I went for it what a dumb kid I was and to make matters worse my neighbor turned the montego in to a dirtrack race car after replacing the big block with a Windsor smallblock or something .the car was totally destroyed in two seasons of racing and sent to the crusher. It makes me sick today still to find out what I had and let it slip through my fingers. I saw one roll across the block on mecums for 28,000 with a 351 auto. Life has it's hard lessons that true.
@@loucostabile if only we could turn back the hands of time. Know what I mean ? I don't even want to tell anyone about the 1958 Chrysler Desoto I thought was a big ugly 4 door car and I turned it down because it was al rusted out real bad from salt use on winter roads and being parked several years in a muddy wet area . Another dumb move on my part and didn't realize the engine was something to become special in these times today . Yep it had a 392 hemi with push button trans and I could have had it for 150 dollars as is . Doh !...
Another forgotten treasure. I remember them and they usually came in bright colors. Mercurys typically are a better value as used cars than their better known Ford siblings as they have more features but usually sell for less.
I had one in high school just like this one except the inside was black. My girlfriend and later my wife had some great times in that car, especially the back seat. Is it for sale?

Hi my name is 905, Happy to read this car brings back memoirs of your Blue 72 :-) You're welcome, Lou
HEY LOU! I was 11 years old when this was new and I NEVER SEEN one either. I hardly remember the Montego until 1983 when I had a friend who droves his dads hand me down Montego Sedan.
Hi gene978, Happy to share this rare ride with you :-) Glad to read this one brought back memories of your Friends Dad's car too, Lou
Beautiful car, very underrated-both back in the day AND today. Would buy one in a second
Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing.
Owned a 76 Montego with a 351 Windsor along with a shift kit and it wasn't the easiest on the eyes even being in mint condition.. Lol! Car had balls though!
Glad to read this car brought back memories of your 76 :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing.
David ,the Silver Fox, Pearson won a Daytona 500 in a crazy finish with the King, Richard Petty driving a Montego of this vintage. Like these big fastback Mercs! Thanks Lou!
Hi allen max, Glad to read you like this "big fastback" :-) You're welcome, Lou
High school student bought this new to replace his late model Cougar? Wow.
Hi Wing Tang, Thank you for viewing and sharing and happy to receive a "Wow" from you, Lou
@Vavazelus Ikr? 68 Cougars are awesome.
Man, Lou, this is a gem. I didn't even know it exists!!
Hi manoman0, Happy to read you enjoy seeing this rare treat :-) Thank you for viewing & sharing, Lou
Lou I had forgotten that Mercury dropped the Cyclone name for 72 and 73 . Consequently they were renamed Montego GT. A very rare find indeed!
HI Larry Hawkins, Happy to read you enjoy the "degree of difficult" in finding and sharing a car like this :-) Lou
Hi iswc27, That Cougar was a quick reminder it was a "wild one" :-) Lou
Looks like they took a Torino and an LTD and combined them . But I like it . That big Cleveland/Cobrajet sounds good . Thanks for posting .
HI Bud Lee, Happy to read you like it :-) My pleasure posting, and you're welcome, Lou
These were great highway/ road trip cars, I had a '75 Montego but not a GT, dont think there were GT's in 75
Happy to read this video brought back memories of your 1975 :-)
Yeah, Montego GTs were only available in 1972-1973 effectively taking over from the Cyclone models of years prior.
My FAVORITE from this era was the 1974 Mercury Montego MX Brougham two-door hardtop...
Happy to read this one is a favorite for you :-)
@@loucostabile Can you imagine how amazing it would be going back in time and buying a few different cars of your dreams, built exactly to your taste color, etc....
Thank You Sir.
You're welcome Gonzo 59, Stay well, Lou
I've never seen one great catch Lou and great video
Hi acts2210, Happy to share this one with you :-) Lou
Fantastic condition. Those were good cars. I had several cars built on that platform. Torino's, Elite's, Thunderbirds...etc..etc. But this one is rare.
Happy to read this one reminds you of some of the cars you enjoyed :-)
It is a beautiful car!
Glad to see you enjoy this car :-)
I didn't realize GTs ever came with that steering wheel. My dad's '73 Montego 4 door has that same wheel, but my '72 GT and my '73 GT both have 3 spoke wheels. I assumed that was standard for all of them.
Hi James, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads 4 door car, and glad to read you had a few too :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Nice car I had one for my first car in 1987
Happy to read this car brings memories of your 1st car :-)
Nice car,I have one of these with a Jon Kaase Boss 429 in it,Shaker Hood and a hood tach, it was one of the 9 manufactured with the Cyclone option, and it had a 351 CJ in it.
Hi Chris Devine, Thank you for viewing and sharing details of your car :-) Sounds like a great car, Lou

early 70's mercury montego gt and mercury cougar gt models were the bomb plus that had the Ford 460 385 v8 as an option!!
Happy to read you enjoy this car Don :-)
Would look really cool with yellow letter tires and black Nascar style wheels.
:-)
Beautiful car Lou! Love it
Hi Paul, Happy to read you "Love it" :-) Lou
At a time when every Ford seemed to offer nothing but idiot lights, the Torino and Montego GT offered a nice clear gauge package!
Glad to read the details of the instrument you enjoy :-)

I give the Grand Torino/Motego alot of respect
Nice :-)
One guy got one for 1500 it runs they worth alot of money i dont think he knows what he got
Sounds like one guy got a good car.
I'll bet the kid who got that Montego back in high school had a dad who owned a Lincoln Mercury dealership.Lucky young man.
That would be nice to drive in High School :-)
A wonderful rare car.
Hi Jerry, Happy to read you appreciate the rarity of this car :-) Lou
Lou, you're like a bloodhound, sniffing out all these cool low mileage, one owner creampuffs. This one super cool. Ford's build quality, was still pretty good, at this point. This beast would eat up the highway miles, without even breaking a sweat. JT
Hi JT, I'll sniff them out and you keep watching and enjoying with me :-) Lou
Had one for my first car! (Dark green, 351c 4bbl, 4-speed Hurst shifter...10 mpg no matter how you drove it!

Beautiful automobile!I would like to have one myself Lou!
Hi Jeffrey, Hope you're behind the wheel of one like this soon, Lou
All 73 Montego cars are rare. I have a MX Brougham, under 50k miles. Station wagon is the most rare.
You're not going to see your wagon any time soon.
My dream cars are a 72 mercury montego GT , and a 1972 Gran Torino Sport
Hi Chris, Here is a video on that 72 Gran Torino. Enjoy, Lou ruclips.net/video/wcbMjzQoh7s/видео.html
@@loucostabile loved that car not the way I’d have it . Too green I’d have mine with bf Goodrich radial tas and red
Hi William Smidt, That's quite the story. I think we've all done things we regret and thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Glad to read you enjoy the uniqueness of this "forgotten treasure" :-)
Cyclone CJ 428 from '72, one was owned by someone from the old neighborhood. . The Montego name sounds familiar but not a GT like this. Its great !
