When any conference deletes God's authoritve word , it no longer has God's blessings. I will be leaving the Methodist Church when my current pastor leaves in June.
Finding a new church will have to be spirit led!

The only way forward for the UMC is to repent and turn back to God. Anything else and they will continue to slide down the slope in the wrong direction.

From a baptist friend looking to cause trouble:
Preach...the...Gospel!!! My goodness, the entire Methodist theological tradition is distracted from our purpose. Stop trying to pull the world in and just preach God's Word! Watch how people flock to Jesus!

I’m sorry you’re having to go through this. I’m sure it’s vexing.
I’m not a Methodist but have been watching this process with interest. The father of my physical therapist was a UMC minister and he is a part of a group that is meeting separately in a space rented from a local funeral home. This is small town so it is happening everywhere.
This is painful. Much of the difficulty you will face will not be the theological but rather the nuts and bolts of keeping the lights on and the AC working. (And the sound system. Don’t forget the sound system. 😬) Remember to love one another.
    Prayers and Peace.

I have spoken to Shane and he's a great person. I really appreciate the Open Air Preaching efforts. That's a huge reason that Methodism became so successful, and a reason that Baptists continue to do well. Hopefully more Methodist congregations engage in street preaching.

Our church went congregational Methodist. Many went independent and many global. I encourage those that decided to wait to see what happened to walk away. The UMC has been heading in this direction for a long time and 2019 conference proved that they didn't care if the vote was to stay traditional the leaders would ignore that. We felt it was a matter of time and they would get their way to stop following scripture. 😔 I am so glad we got out. Our church feels like we are free from the evil clutches of what the church has now become, sadly. And it's going to get worse. Walk away. Find a church that stays true to the word of God. Loving people also means being truthful. We are talking about people's very souls! Praying for all caught up in this and that they will pray for guidance. 🙏

Our church dissaffiliated and remains Independent. I love it. It is a Bible reading/believing Church and my hope is that it does not affiliate with any denomination. It is fully self supporting and has no need for bishops. Also the word Methodist is no longer in the Church name which I believe is now a liability since the UMC has pretty much drug it thru the mud. I will probably consider moving on if our Church affiliates with another Methodist denomination.

If our church had not been able to disafiliate, I would have been in your shoes. I was already wondering where I would go. My suggestion, for what it's worth....I am a Methodist and wanted to stay Methodist. We considered a couple options, including globalist, and independent as a church. We chose congregational Methodist. They have been wonderful! Supporting! Helpful in finding us a new pastor who is fired up to help us rebuild our membership. As an individual I would look for a church that feels right to you as long as it's staying true to scripture. Blessings and prayers for your path forward. 🙏

One thing churches that have their buildings taken could look into doing is sharing buildings with other conservative churches in the area. I have seen lots of of ACNA churches using the buildings of all sorts of other churches from LCMS to SDA. The two CREC churches near me use UMC and SBC church buildings respectively. The only Moravian church in my state meets in a large UMC church. That way two different congregations can share costs and have access to a sacred space designed for worship.

Methodists cannot just retreat or flee to another church when there are attacks to Christian orthodoxy within the church. We need to fight to overturn these decisions within the church. In just abandoning these establishments we are abandoning the missionary and charity organizations set up underneath this church that will take decades for a new offset denomination of Methodism to get to if they ever will. Return the UMC to orthodoxy!✝️

    • @angiepalmer7138

You know this didn't just happen. It's been seeping in for years, maybe decades. Many have fought. We fought. We were ignored. Don't you think it broke my heart? That it broke the hearts of long time members, some of which were founding family members from generations of a 150 year old church? Our church was either going to have to get out, or die. We had lost so many members. I do not want to see umc continue its downward spiral. But the leaders that could have stopped it, didn't. 😔🥺

The trust clause is logical for any denomination. Just because a congregation built and paid for the original church doesn't mean that when the building goes into decline that the local congregation can afford to maintain it. That is when the conference steps in with support. Another point is that the average UMC was/is 38 members with facilities built for more than 100 to 400 members.

At 29:16 exactly so. I was raised Methodist and when people ask what attending a Methodist church was like I tell them something like "it's the most middle-of-the-road white-bread church imaginable". Only later did I find out the powerful story of the early Methodist church. But the horse had left the barn, I switched first Episcopal then finally Catholic. My mom went the other way and became Presbyterian. BTW my family have been tea-totaling Methodist miners for hundreds of years going back to England.

I grew up in the south. At least for me, it was good and the bible and living for Jesus was strongly preached. But I didn't know the ugly underbelly. I wasn't involved w the managing etc. And we could stay in our bubble if it were bc its the mentality, that's not how we do things here, and our leaders were strong in their faith etc. But the evil or leavening if you will, kept creeping in. And you really couldn't ignore it anymore. I have lived in a small community and we disafiliated last year, praise God. I love the message and what John Wesley brought along with his brother who wrote soooo many hymns, to the Christian faith or can I saw followers of Jesus! I am so sad to see what has been allowed to happen to the UMC. As the bible has showed us over and over, we always have the option to repent and turn things back to God and His Son Jesus Christ! Time will tell as to what the UMC will do. Praying 🙏

2028 is next UMC conference from my understanding. One thing I'm looking at with my small UMC church is that the building is bigger than we are. Financially, we can do much more to minister to people without it in many ways. If we follow God and need to leave the building, there are some pragmatic gains to be had.

Our small umc has a cemetery on the property. Families own lots. That is a civil contract. In our state local gov. take responsibility. They will not allow Bishops to take the assets and leave the local government holding the bag.

Please indulge me. The United Methodist Church has long had its Book of Discipline. Presumably, any minister choosing to become affiliated with the UMC was aware of its contents before taking an oath to uphold it. Why were they allowed to ignore those parts of the discipline with which they disagreed? Why were they allowed to structure this issue in a way that forced those who wished to adhere to the BoD to leave. Why didn’t they have the courage of their convictions to themselves leave and form a new denomination?
I believe bishops who allowed individual clergy under their authority to ignore those parts of the Discipline with which they disagreed, at the outset, have an enormous responsibility for the UMC finding itself as it is today. Perhaps it was hope for appeasement which eroded their grit, their courage, and their commitment to that which they vowed to uphold.
A Methodist all my life, a United Methodist from its creation, in the same congregation, I find myself conflicted. I believe strongly in diversity and acceptance. My congregation has chosen to remain UM, and I with it. But I’m not comfortable with it. I question my own integrity by seeing my choice being one of degree. I resent, deeply, those who have left disparaging those who have stayed without any knowledge of why. I equally resent those who stayed being characterized as something most are not. Both made brave and bold and in most cases carefully considered decisions . The very fact that one side judges the other, when faith decisions are not either’s to judge, is yet but one more age-old example of religion being its own worst enemy.
If anyone has “won” in this tragedy, it is they who espouse “divide and conquer.”
