- Ever wondered what all those mushrooms next to the trail are? Ever wanted to find your own wild edible mushrooms? In this video Aaron Hilliard, Vice President of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society and Creator of Mushroom Wonderland takes you on a walk into the woods on the 28th of October 2022 to discover amazing fungi in the forest of the Pacific Northwest.
In this video we encounter Alcohol inky caps(Coprinopsis atramentaria), Pacific Golden Chanterelles (Cantharellus formosus) and a monster chanterelle with a mutation known as Rosecomb, we look at various shelf conchs (Fomitopsis mounceae), an absolutely stunning Violet Webcap (Cortinarius violaceus), a beautifully fungal discolored wood (Chlorociboria), and a Lobster Mushroom(Hypomyces lactiflorum), as well as much more hot fungi talk.
Please hit subscribe for more vids just like this and all things mushrooms.

The leaves above the purple mushroom... Look like they have faces!
Awesome someone else had the same thought I did! If you look at the leaf up and to the right of the obvious "face" leaf it looks like the frowny smiley mask combo. Lol
Yeah that forest, just like a lot of the parks around here, are littered with leaves that people cut the faces out of. They're literally everywhere you look. I guess they have lost their luster to me.
@@mushroomwonderland1 that's crazy cool! I live across the Sound from you... I'm gonna start paying more attention to the leaves instead of just the Fungi!
Right, lol, kinda like a Halloween mask
I like the pair of friendly leaf faces at 29:29 by the purple mushroom.😃
Really appreciate these regular update videos. As someone just starting to learn about mushrooms, this year has been challenging for trying to find things growing in the PNW and it's nice to have the perspective of knowing that it's not just me.
Its gonna probably start to get a bit less challenging with this nice rain we just got.
Did anyone else see and wonder about the leaves with smiling faces at the left side of the frame around 30:49 or is my imagination just running wild?!? 😳🍂🍄 I am loving the videos. Learning so much!
You have quickly become one of my favorite channels!
Love your video! Smily leaves by the purple mushroom through!🤩
What a proper trail dog. Gunner poops off the trail. Good dog.
I went up in the southern cascades in Oregon yesterday looking for chanterelle’s.lots of shrooms but no chanterelles. And the ground was frozen. Temp was about 34degress
He is so good and polite that way. He really tries not to poop in his own yard, he waits until we go for a walk.
29:31 how did you not talk about the two faces In the leaves??!!
I saw those too! And they looked so happy! :)
@@backtoalaska6755 Big smiles forsure! @.@
The Violet Webcap was amazing, but I couldn't help staring at the two leaves that look like masks just above it!
Those were so cool! The mushroom was too but those looked like masks!
Yeah they clearly looked like faces
They look like Korok masks! I’m glad others noticed too
I noticed them too! Thought he did it and put them there haha
Aaron!! I found my 1st chanterelles this week! Thank you for doing what you do-thanks to your videos I knew where to go near me and what to look for! I’m so excited!!! 🍄
Awesome!! Now you're really hooked!🍄🤙
I was not expecting to find spam bots on here. 🙄 reported them though.
I think chanterelles are probably one of the best edible species to start with. they're so distinct with obviously unique features for identification. morels would be the other one.
PNW is the only for me, WEST COAST BEST COAST 👌🏽
I love living here but I wouldn't be mad about foraging mushrooms on the East Coast either 🤷
I miss living in WA State so much!!
Great video as always
I so needed this video. We found out my mom is really sick so I haven't had an opportunity to get out much lately. Your videos are so therapeutic. Thank you Aaron!
So sorry to hear that, glad you're here getting some relief!
I think at about the 2 minute mark, Gunner was Christening your future adventure together. Godspeed.
Your channel is a treasure of info 💚
Thanks for the help. I learn more about mushrooms from you then all the others put together. very well done videos and great information.
Awesome as always.
Thank you Aaron for all you do. I love your channel ❤.
Great idea!
You are Really "Tuning Me Up" for My First Mushroom Hunt! Thanks Aaron!
'Oh hey momma' love your videos!
Thanks for your videos man. Love learning more about these amazing fungi. Need to make it up to the pnw soon!
Makes me happy to see this video... The forest is calling!!! ✌️❤️🍄
This video was very informative. I enjoyed the format on this one in particular. And, I’m apparently learning a lot in your channel as we join you virtually on these hunts. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the great video .very nice editing. like your music. keep your eyes down brother
So cool. And so jealous! Love it .
thank you! I learned a lot!
Great to see videos done locally. Timing and habitat hints really help my wife and I know when and where to look. Wish we had your knowledge along for a walk with so many mushrooms we don't know
Shrumps, nice! Great video! Found a basket full of green oyster mushrooms today in NW Pa. ✌️
Great Video Aaron. Went out today for a bit north east of seattle. No chanterelles at 2700 or at 1500. Great weather for a hunt. Thanks Man.
Thank you for these videos! I am interested in getting into foraging. Every time I went hiking I always stopped and admired all of the things on the floor and trees... so I feel like this is the perfect passion hobby for me. I am currently living in the Canary Islands but when I return to the U.S. I will get into this. In the meantime, I'll watch your videos :)
@Mushroom Wonderland - Aaron - Thanks for another awesome vid!!
Thank you🙏🍄
As always...excellent.
Thank you🍄🤙
Fabulous!
Chanterelles are popping up farther south in the Coast Range of Oregon, too. Got a good haul of chanterelles and lobster mushrooms this weekend. Saw some oyster mushrooms and slippery jacks, too, but didn't collect them.
Always exciting to watch your content

Hope to see u at the mushroom festival in Oregon next week
We're getting our 2nd decent soaking down here, I'm going to head to the coast this week, figure I'd give it another few days, can't wait to see what you get into around that time as well.
I live in the Portland area with woods all around me. Thanks for inspiring me to go exploring.
Thank you 😊
Thanks again Aaron. I agree, this year is not so good. I pick north of Vancouver BC at higher mountain elevations, so the rains have come just before the freeze. Hopefully I will get lucky with a few Matsutake (Pines). By the way, I haven't checked into your channel for a while, and I must say this has to be the best produced video I have seen you post. Primo video ! Also the two Halloween leaf faces you placed on the ground beside the "Violet Webcap" at minutes 29:13 & 30:11 was a cool little trick, ya ? Or did you not notice them. I sure did ! They look pretty awesome. Or maybe it's the Hyphae screaming at you "We're here, We're here" . Desperately trying to communicate. Or it could be a new species of fungi called "Pareidolia" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia . Excellent video bro ! L8r. 🍄🚶♀🍄🚶♂🍄
30:11 the leaf faces...Nature is watching you lol
Wow that purple guy blew my mind , and the black light on silver tuft is quite a beautiful show. I respect the poison mushrooms I don’t touch them and I cook and eat the edible mushrooms 🍄❤!
Mush love ❤️
I see happy faces on those leaves in the back at 29:29 lol
Yes lots of comments about those! Somebody in that forest likes to make them. They make a lot of them, at a certain point it starts to look like litter! But it's fun that everybody is seeing them.
Love your videos! I learn a lot from you and I'm fascinated by fungi. Although I'm northeast Washington and a higher elevation
sweetness!
thank you 🙏
Great update! My wife and I have been watching you for a while now and we are learning a lot. Thank you so much!
OMG, at the 29:30 mark there are 2 leaves that form the masks of Comedy & Tradgedy~right as you are talking about the Purple webcap!
Yes there are 2masks leaves by at the purple mushroom
Chanterelles are starting to appear in our woods along with some boletes…I’ll bet in a few weeks fungi will be popping up everywhere 🌲🐿🍄
Прекрасный лес!)))Очень красиво,спасибо за видео!))) Всем мира,здоровья и добра!)))
Hey Aaron,
I’m over in Snohomish county. Went out today and didn’t find very many fresh mushrooms except an absolutely massive hericium coralloides. Eating it for dinner as I watch your video🙏
That is an amazing find!! Especially in Snohomish county. I’ve only ever found them past central WA. Do you know the type of tree it was growing on?
Miserable conditions for mushroom hunters is right, omg…been about a week of rain for us in NW MT as well so can’t wait to see what’s out tomorrow 😊
you are a genius
It seems the Rosy comb Chantys I find are always larger than normal like that beauty You found, another clue to the mystery of the Rosy comb mutation. Always White Chanterelles where I hunt aswell, never see any Goldens.
How about "frangible" for the quality of Russula where they break crisply or with some kind of brittleness rather than weakness? Thanks for all the great info about ecology, habitat, the mushroom's place in the ecosystem. I learned a lot.
At 30:50 there are two big leaves in the bottom left that look like smiling faces. They even have eyebrows!
Yeah somebody makes those and throws them everywhere in that forest. Good eye!
@@mushroomwonderland1 that's cool
Up in the San Juan’s we’re getting lots of Oysters, Shaggy Manes, earth stars, Turkey tail, and pholiota spp.
Did anyone else catch the smiley face dead leaves next to the cortinarius violaceus (I think 29 minutes)? Great video btw!
Lots of people did notice! They are all over in that forest. Good catch 🎭😅🍄
"Ahhhh there's a bug!!!" 🤣🤣🤣
Hey there love your channel, thanks for all the knowledge bombs! I'm just North of you in Langley BC and my wife and I have just started mushroom hunting. The places we've been looking have a lot of blackberry bushes everywhere, almost carpeting the ground. I see where you're looking there doesn't seem to be any. Do blackberry bushes inhibit the growth of mushrooms? We haven't found any chanterelles yet but have found lung oysters a number of times.
Thanks.
Habitats that support a lot of blackberry growth typically get too much sunlight for mushrooms to grow well. We definitely have areas that are covered in Himalayan and native blackberry but neither of them are good mushroom picking habitats. Glad you're here in mushroom wonderland! 🤙🤙🍄
Found a few goldens in NorCal the other day around 600’ on the coast. Good rains coming this week 🎃
Behind the Purple Mushroom there's 2 Leafs Smiling at US please look
Love your Video s
Yes that is definitely the most popular comment on this video. The Forest floor out there is littered with them. Someone has a lot of time on their hands!
small chantrells your getting, im not saying i wouldnt pick them, but i found some doubble fist size ones here in pennsylvania
You showed very old and dead mushrooms. Could you speak in a future video about the chemical and physical processes causing mushroom ageing and death?
Wow! I absolutely love you vids. I've watched three now back to back. I've always just hunted oysters and chantrelles but found some lobsters and rutella today. I ddin't know much about them, so I looked up rutella and found you. What a find. You're super knowledgeable. Id love to go on a hunt with you. Do you ever offer that? If so, what is the best way to contact you?
I don't offer foraging right now, unless you remember of Kitsap Peninsula mycological Society, and then I will lead a couple of forays for the members. And I volunteer sometimes but it's hit or miss. Maybe in the future all try to take more groups out into the woods. Just really busy right now. Thanks for watching the channel!
@@mushroomwonderland1 you def gotta do that Aaron. Not sure if you’d be into it or not. I’d be reluctant myself, there’s a lot of crazies out there. But maybe a full background check might be prudent 😂.
Hello from Kitsap as well! Any words about them two droids yet? They haven't frequented their usual star systems yet ...
Wasn’t even subscribed, what a shame. It was in-till you said it 🤣
I can never find info for norther California southern Oregon border aria . specifically the Modoc, Klamath region. have any suggestions of where I can look ? do you have any videos ?
Where would be the best place to look for mushrooms in the Appalachian mountains area of PA¿?
What do you do with all the extra mushrooms you pick and don't cook or eat? How long will they last refrigerated?
🎶Aaron and Gunner are walking thru the forest…🎶 (somebody finish it 😂)
I have a species of a mushroom growing outside of my back door that looks so much like several different kinds of mushrooms I just cannot identify it. I’m hoping it is a wavy caps as it looks a lot like the way we cap but it does not blue when touched. Can you help me identify this please? It is not typically grown in my area however I am in a very unique area that mimics the northwest rainforest. I am located in Rabun County Georgia and then our specific place it is said to be the second highest rainfall area in the United States second only to the area that you are in in the northwest. Is it possible this could be a wavy caps?
I just notice some faces in the leaves, you did that. minute 30:48
I didn't do it, but yeah those leaves are Everywhere in that forest, almost like litter at a certain point. But they are fun and cool the first time you see them.
😅I jumped and screamed at that bug 😑😑😂😂
What is going on with those leaves on the left, at @30:50??? They are looking at me funny!
the leaf right behind the purple mushroom looks EAXCTLY like a face
does someone make a field ruler that has a color calibration strip printed onto it? I used to print one on an index card to carry around for photography. I could use the full backside of the card as a fill-light reflector, and use the side with the color calibration to set my white point, alter the color balance to simulate gel filter effects, or show scale. also I could put it someplace in the scene intended to be cropped out to give myself something to adjust color by during editing. the problem with using an index card is that it's not pure white, which meant (using inkjet) that the color patches weren't accurate either, but it was pretty close. for scientific purposes though you'd want it as close as possible
That rosecomb mutation really makes the chanterelles hard to clean.
So do you eat the mutated cap?
30:57 ~ there is two creepy leaves on the very left side of the screen. One tannish color and the other like a brownish purple, the have faces...
They never really did show up last year. My bolete spot didn’t put up but maybe two that I seen. This year a frog could play one hell of a game of the floor is lava jumping from mushroom to mushroom
29:30 two leaves look like faces smiling at the camera!
30:10 Happy face leaves
can anyone tell me what the very first mushroom in the intro at 4 secs mark is? the red cap one with white dots. we have a ton here in eastern NC right now, like to know if can eat. thanks
It is Amanita muscaria, there is so much info online about history and uses of this iconic mushroom. I really should make a video dedicated to that mushroom.
Aaron that shroom won't feed my family. But it would feed me LOL.
Look him up for your psychedelic products
Cortinarius violaceul este un Cortinarius care poate fi consumat și este bun la gust din câte am auzit
Is it possible to grow saplings indoors to use to grow mycorrhizal mushrooms?
It has been tried in countless experiments around the world and over the past several decades and with very little success. The relationship is still quite a mystery. Even if you successfully inoculated the tree roots with a fungi and waited long enough for the tree and mycelium to become mature, there is still no guarantee you'll get fruiting bodies!
Why do those leaves have faces on them :D
Exactly one year later and the mushrooms have come early. Only ond maids left this year already. LOTS OF MUSHROOMS 2023 midwest Oregon
Anyone see faces in the leaves at 29:29??
What parks besides banner and Jackson in the area do you suggest?
All of the state parks are good. And if you go a little further out the skokomish area near browns Creek is good, and of course the Olympic Foothills near Lake Cushman and stuff.
The faces on the leaves at 29:30
👍🍄
Mushrooms at 28.24 decievers?
Hilarious Hilliard !!! Yeah I don't like iether , great to know I'm not the only one who wonders wth others hunt these yukie things other than fir a pretty picture !
Did you make those leàf faces next to the cortinarius?
I noticed that too!
I did not, someone who frequents that trail makes hundreds of them.
I can't find psilocybine mushroom
I didn't see the mushrooms that are growing around the stumps on my property in Jefferson Beach Estates. I took some pictures of them but i don't know what they are. do you have an email address where I can send pictures to you?
Pause at 29:31, those two leaves look like they have lil faces in them
