  • This is a follow up video for the pond filter system I developed for my ducks. Added a bit more of the ducks & the enclosure this time, but skipped over some of the pond filter details as I covered that in my last video. feel free to ask questions about the setup etc.

    I like the elevated ponds so the water could be used to naturally irrigate and fertilize gardens. Perfect! Nice little setup you have!👍

    Working on a complete revamp of the entire pond & filter system. It still works just fine, but i still need to unblock the pond outlet about 2 or 3 times a year & also have to top the water up every week in the summer. WATCH THIS SPACE.

    They'll turn your garden into a mud patch in a flash. Do they bother you with their quacking? Hens are much cleaner btw as they perch rather than sitting in their own ****. Good luck with the project, great fun!

    • @sideways_fun
      @sideways_fun  4 года назад +2

      No mud patches in my garden. I have had ducks for nearly 10 years now. Hens scratch up gardens i hear. Ducks just nuzzle between the plants & keep the pests down.
      Its only the girls that quack loudly & that is pretty rare if they are happy. I stopped the early morning quacking with the sleeping box. Its fairly soundproof & dark. Bert is chatty all the time when we are with him but its no loud.

    Hi Lee, what pump do you use and the filter system, I'm thinking of setting up a pen with a pond and a couple of ducks but want to set it up right first time, thanks. Is it worth having an area of the pen as grass or will they turn it to mud pretty quick? Oh, and what breed are they? Thanks

    • @sideways_fun
      @sideways_fun  4 года назад

      Sorry i have been so long replying. RUclips seems to have stopped notifying me. So the Ducks are Indian Runners. Very friendly breed. I think the pump is jebao eco pond pump 5000l/h.
      Hope this is not too late for you.
      Dont have any real grass next to the pond. It will become mud quickly. I use fake grass on my new setup... watch my new video.

    Hi Lee. I love your set up and the way it camouflages the run. Can you recommend particular fast growing plants to add to my duck enclosure when I get it? X

    • @sideways_fun
      @sideways_fun  4 года назад +2

      Hi Angela, I have grown red & white jasmine on the outside of the pen which seems fairly virulent. inside the pen, the ducks tent to trash most plants.
      Hardy Geraniums seem to work well inside the pen. Ivy also seems to last being pulled around.
      Anything woody will last, but tends to be slower growing.

    • @angelagilroy8495
      @angelagilroy8495 4 года назад +1

      Lee Taylor Thanks Lee. I have a huge garden and geraniums are prolific so I think I will transplant them to the pen. Thank you so much for your input x

    How do you manage the roots in the barrels, and keep the plants from sinking to the bottom of the barrel? Looks lovely

    • @sideways_fun
      @sideways_fun  4 года назад

      Plants float, but i did put a few plastic mesh baskets in there to initially sit the plants on.

    • @sideways_fun
      @sideways_fun  4 года назад

      After 2 years i took the plants out. If i hadnt have re designed the system at this point, I would have chopped the root clump up with a spade to thin it out. It had fully filled the top half of the barrel.

    Are the plants in the buckets only fed by the water from the bath?

    • @sideways_fun
      @sideways_fun  4 года назад

      We have a bucket down the bottom for them. I empty that into the plants every day or so when i clean it out. I just refill it with the pond water.

    how do you manage the mosquitoes in the pond ? I get mosquitoes on my duck pond

    • @sideways_fun
      @sideways_fun  3 года назад +1

      I got goldfish. They eat all the mosquitos. They can hide from the ducks in the bottom of the pond & in the other section. Now the fish are fairly big, the ducks dont try to eat them.

    Hello Lee very interesting filter system, I would like to know how your barrels are filled. Can you please tell me what material you use for the individual stages? Also which type of pump do you use ? Also which type of plants did you use?

    • @sideways_fun
      @sideways_fun  6 лет назад

      Conny Becker the pump is a jebao Innotive eco.
      The first barrel just has a void at the bottom to act like a swirl filter & give solids time to drop out. Above that are plants. The second barrel has scouring pads & plants.
      Last barrel has rubble & the pump.
      The plants are a mix of irises & ornamental grass + a bit of creeping Ginny.

      Hello Lee. Just an other question. How do secure the roots from the plans in the barrel? And is there soil around the roots ?

  • @linrkirk
    @linrkirk 4 года назад

    Ivy will take over all of the plants.

    • @sideways_fun

      Got plenty of ivy in my garden. Easy to control if you keep on top of it. I have far more invasive plants i would like to be rid of though.

    • @sideways_fun
      @sideways_fun  6 лет назад

      Conny Becker no height difference because they level out when the pump turns off.

    Can't your ducks fly away mate? Have they had their wings clipped?

    • @sideways_fun
      @sideways_fun  6 лет назад +4

      Na. Most domestic breeds cant fly because they are too heavy. Mine are Indian runners. they can flap about 2 foot off the ground, but that is all.
