It's worth mentioning that there's a difference between coil splitting and coil tapping. Coil splitting actually splits the humbucker and uses just one of the coils, giving a single-coil sound. Coil TAPPING still uses both coils, but only uses half the winds. It does NOT give a single-coil sound.

It’s better than the previous option of only $2,000 for the modern studio with features that many didn’t want. What’s crazy is $1500 for the Les Paul lite satin models. Those are so basic and should be in the $1,000 range.

    • @kevinmurtagh4996
      @kevinmurtagh4996 4 месяца назад +50

It’s really not “insane” given inflation. Do people think that guitar companies are supposed to be exempt from inflation or something? $1,600 is a lot of money to the average person, but Gibsons have always been a lot of money to the average person! None of us like that Gibsons have always been annoyingly expensive, but there is nothing “insane” about the cost of these new Studios. Inflation is high right now, and the prices reflect that.

It’s the Gibson thing. Reissue something and raise the prices just to raise prices. Inflation is not at 30-50%. It may seem like it, but it’s not. Wages haven’t changed much so there’s no justification for a $1000-1500 guitar to be $2000 just because “reissue” or “inflation”.

  • @Motocoupemusic

I gotta say it’s going to be tough to be a guitar retailer in the years to come. Guitars were ‘reasonably’ priced before Covid. But ever since they’ve gone a bit wrong. Generally for understandable reasons. However the consumer is not richer and we all remember what these guitars cost only 3-5 years ago. It’s a tough sell!!! This statement isn’t limited to Gibson, I genuinely do wonder what the guitar market will do over the next few years and how retailers will cope with the price hikes as I can’t imagine customers will happily pay these prices knowing the lower pricing only a few years ago?

People hate the pricing but fender and PRS show us how much money they can make off bolt-on designs with no binding. Regardless if you care for nitro, binding, and set necks or not… they take way longer to make. Yet bolt on designs are more streamlined. Especially on the fender end. Yet people pay over $1.4k+ for an American fender. My disappointment is the coil splits suck. A picky reason but I’d prefer the coil splits to be annoying icepicky and use the tone knobs to dial back than that garbled mess in it.

@cromBumny you can buy any guitar and spend the same number of hours. It used to be that the studio was the entry point for Gibson Les Paul ownership. Now they're charging Standard money.
No way a Studio should be £1600, I don't know how they can justify it, I also don't know who can justify paying it, it's literally cheaper to buy a second hand /proper/ Les Paul (Standard).
Also, Say this from the position of owning multiple Les Paul's including a '59. I can see the Studio line failing again and them pulling it at this price point.

Bound neck looks awesome on the Studio.
Back when I first became aware of the Studio, around 1993, they came in two nat finish colors, wine red and black. I think they were also something like $700 US. About that time an American Tele or Strat was around $750 or $800. Things have definitely changed a lot in those 30 years. Obviously the prices are significantly higher, but the appearance and bells and whistles in those Studios are a fair bit greater, too.

Been playing for 20 years and have ALWAYS wanted a Gibson les paul ever since playing an LP studio at our high school talent show in 2007. Fast forward to 2021. I was cranking out overtime because of the pandemic and could finally justify pulling the trigger on an LP studio so I started to look around only to find that same year they raised the price to $1599. So instead of immediately pulling the trigger on one like I intended on doing before I saw the price increase, I shopped around in the $1000-$1600 price range instead. I ended up finding more value in the cheaper LTD EC1000 and took it home that day instead of the Gibson. Gibson is pricing themselves out of the market for normal blue collar workers.

For people that say the Studio is very expensive. Why is there no issues with the prices of the Standard?
Personally it sounds more sensible Studio 1.6k than a standard for 2.7k (or whatever the price exactly is)
You pay 1k more for the standard, and the biggest difference is a hard case, binding in the body, a poker chip and the headstock having mop in the logo. Not sure what else between both is an upgrade or something you can obectively see that costs more to produce. And these differences are not 1k difference for sure.
Like the LP Special, thats 1.7k or 1.8k , and that one has hard case, but no maple carved top, so actually the hard case is more expensive but not having map carved top is less expensive to do.
Overall the price I think is great on the Studio. Having binding looks much cooler. If I was looking for an LP new, would consider the Studio for sure if it had a 50's style neck.
Also as we all know of Gibson, you can try many different ones until you find a very good example. I would consider trying Studios as well, cos like the look , the white plastics as well (didnt like the black plastics on previous studios that much).
Still, gibson is expensive I think for what it is overall. But it is what it is, and the Studio is at least kind of decently priced all things considered IMO.

I agree with you about split coil humbuckers. I love my PRS S2 594, but never use that feature.

They're always a compromise, but if you need something like a single coil tone live and want to play your humbucker guitar....
I wish they would make a Les Paul model with a P90 in the neck and a humbucker in the bridge.
