    One key thing that has helped me draw faces is taking selfies of different facial expressions. When you do this, you can trace over the photo to understand the planes of your face better and where these shadows and highlights appear. You then start to see basic shapes form the planes of your face which helps moving forward with charter design or portrait work. It's also great fun to exaggerate these features so that they can really tell a story or overall feeling.
    I can't wait for your new class! I know it's going to be great!!!

    • @BrookeGlaser

      What a clever idea! Plus all those expressions definitely pull your features in different directions, so that's an amazing way to study it in action.

    Thank you so much for sharing your process Brooke. It's so easy, when you see these amazing pieces on Instagram, to think that everyone is instantly talented and you'll never be as good. We need more honest videos showing it takes a lot of mistakes, hard work and determination to get there. Thank you 💗

    I did exactly the same as you by analysing the drawings of artist that I like. I think the areas where I lack the most are hands, hairs and clothing. I was really bad at backgrounds, but I think I have improved a lot by watching tutorials. I also would like to mention that finding your brushes (in Procreate) is very important.

    This is wonderful Brooke! I’ve been trying to draw portraits since 2015 and still haven’t established my style yet. Of course this has been on and off over the years. I’m really looking forward to see what you have to share in the future course!

      Thanks Jennifer! I'd say the exact same thing with my style - I don't feel like it's finalized yet either, it's still evolving. But boy it's fun to feel like I'm making progress, cuz I didn't feel like I was making any for years (even though all those efforts WHERE helping, just slowly).

    Why not recommend #Facetober by Charly Clements instead of inktober. It was great practice for me this year. I definitely agree that art challenges are good for motivating practice and sparking inspiration. It is also good to see how other artist drew the same prompt

  • @rachelgreaner8780
    @rachelgreaner8780 2 года назад

    This is great! Not a lot of well-established artists show how their "bad" work starts when they try a new subject. You can see how much you grew in the time and how perseverance helped. I also think that you have an illustrated style even in the pieces you described as "Realistic." It reminds me of your other drawings and feels a bit like editorial mixed with children's illustration.
    I still struggle with people too, but I think emulating other artists helped. I did a bit of the same as you, where I actually participated in a challenge (Charly Clements' facetober) which was an amazing first step. It takes out the hassle of planning, but also you can't spend days correcting a piece of the artwork, you have to get it completed ASAP. Some of the ones I did, I absolutely hate, but I also created some that I really liked.
    I need to watch more, but on Schoolism, Nathan Fawkes has a class on drawing portraits in charcoal. You can use any medium, but he goes over the Loomis method and explains it in more detail. I haven't finished it yet, but he's a wonderful teacher. Other people that helped me were artists on Patreon and/or Skillshare: Gabrielle Brickey, Loish, Schmoedraws, & LotusBubble! I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting, though, haha. I would love to see your interpretation of the subject matter, though! Looking forward to the possibility of the class 😊

    I'm looking forward to your upcoming class on Skillshare fr bc I liked how you taught intro to illustration and how to find your illustration style. I still stink at faces now, but I do see progress every time I do a studies like you talked about, especially for the nose and eyes. I've also been tracing over photographs and noticing how an exact trace still won't look right, and how real people have asymmetries. Thanks for making this video :D

    • @BrookeGlaser
      @BrookeGlaser  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, it's crazy how stiff it looks if you just trace it over. But also encouraging - it means all those unique touches you add as the artist is what makes a more compelling piece of art! No just a straight up photo-realistic copy.

    Hi Brooke! I started relaxing about how I approached even looking at faces after being introduce to caricature. It allowed me to see the face shapes and how they relate to each other. It also allowed me to just sketch to capture a face. I can still remember when and where i did some of the sketches.
    I also give myself permission to do it all wrong. The breakthrough was recognizing that all those amazing portraits from the masters could look nothing like the actual people! Meanwhile, love seeing your process and progress and hearing how you went about it. The timing was perfect since i had been whining about something similar earlier. Looking forward to the Skillshare class.

    • @BrookeGlaser
      @BrookeGlaser  2 года назад

      OMG, that is amazing that the masters portraits could look totally different from the actual people! Mind blowing! And I should definitely study caricature more, cuz I want a more stylized look. Any books or resources you recommend for learning?

      @@BrookeGlaser Glad to recommend a couple of sources. I watched videos from Proko’s Art of Caricature by Court Jones. It’s an online course but I like how he explains why as well as how. And I have a book on drawing characters -the Silver Way-by Stephen Silver. I”m the kind of artist who does better drawing what is in front of me so making things up is also a challenge. Most of what I have learned about my attempts is that i have to have the right language to use talking to myself.

    Wow, I really should learn not to discount art styles I'm not used to.
    For the longest time, I thought any art style that isn't realistic or anime is inferior or just bad. But watching your videos and your courses has made me realise there's value in many many many different styles

    Hi Brooke! Love this video and all of your content! Unrelated question though. I just purchased the new iPad Pro and Apple Pencil 2, and I use procreate for drawing. I’m very new to these products, and I’m super anxious to use them haha! I was wondering, do you use a screen protector for your iPad? I’m worried that my pencil will scratch the screen, and although this fear is probably irrational, I just can’t get over it. Advice?

    What's helped you to draw faces better?

    • @sketchesbylroseg
      @sketchesbylroseg 2 года назад

      Hey, what helped me to draw faces better was doing fanart of anime or cartoons. Those helped me with proportions and style. I also did a lot of studies with drawing and sketching family members, characters and any portrait I found inspiring. Although the process was frustrating at times, I tried what you did which was to draw once everyday. Also, watching RUclips Vids and tutorials helped too. I also studies facial features. I loved drawing eyes and exploring style from there, focusing on each feature then bringing them together. 😁

    Great to see your portraits over the years. I liked the style in the beginning as well, though. So I think if you have a less realistic approach for drawing people, that’s great, too. I don’t think that you wanted to say it’s bad, I just wanted to say that I like this less realistic, more simplified drawing style as well, but clearly that wasn’t what you were aiming for, so great progress.

    • @BrookeGlaser
      @BrookeGlaser  2 года назад +1

      Oh, I completely agree! It's fun to create these more realistic styles, but I LOVE simple, stylized portraits. I don't think this is where my style of drawing people ends, I'm still working towards a more stylized hybrid between the two.
