I don't know if you're still reading comments here, but THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU TUMZA!!! I am a 60 year old woman with no formal hardware technology training; just a lack of fear of tearing things apart when there is nothing left to lose. I was fortunate enough to have the identical laptop that you tore down here. Only difference was one small cable under the motherboard- the fingerprint reader. My cooling fan was completely seized up. Laptop would boot, but shut down after short time from overheating. I used your video to tear laptop down to get to cooling fan/heat sink component for part number. Found another video that showed how to remove and replace that. Found the correct replacement fan component on NewEgg. When I put everything back together, the computer wouldn't even start, let alone boot up. So I tore the whole thing down again. Found one cable that had pulled loose during reconstruction. Put it all back together, and it booted right up. New fan spinning away. My guess is that this would have cost me $300 to $400 to have done at a repair shop. YOU ARE MY HERO!
Great video. To replace the fan, all you need to do is detach the heat sink (screws remain in place). Peel the entire heat sink back - be careful not to upset the thermal paste. Then you can remove/replace the fan and reassemble.
Thank you for the video, it helped me remove the MB of my DV7-6163 and remember all the ribbons and screws. I was able to take off the fan by removing the heatsink from the MB and unscrewing the 4 screws. I replaced the fan and now am ready to re-assemble..where is that video?...lol
Holy crap, I did it. I'm no techy and my problem was that my electrical cord ripped out and disconnected the connector deep inside. I followed you through the whole way, reconnected (and blew out the fan while I was there) and made it back out to type you my deepest gratitude. Do you have a paypal account somewhere I could leave you a tip? Thank You Tumza, God bless you and yours.
I am so impressed at how careful you are in taking apart that laptop. You are like a surgeon! You must do this sort of thing a lot, I hope you are rewarded in your life for your great skills. Great video. My friend has the same issue with the fan, and he wants to replace it. I now know that I won't be doing it for him, as it's not very easy. Thanks!
Well I can tell you that your video is one of the best instruction videos on youtube. You explained it very well and step by step you cautioned the users of possible mishaps. Unfortunately in 2014 HD recording was not a common option otherwise the video would have been even better. One point I can mention is it is best to flip the keyboard and disconnect it from the back and reinstall it from the back to. It's a lot easier.
Man, you are a genious. I have the same problem, and some previous experience disassembling machines, but in this one I stopped in the middle to find out if someone like you had taken the time not only to do it, but to film it, and kindly explain the whole process... Maybe in the first world they just throw it away and buy another one... But there are many places where computers are very expensive and it is not easy to get such a good machine as this. Thanks a lot for your time and patience to explain. Greetings from Argentina.
im about to do the same bro wish me luck! parts are pretty cheap but this laptop is still great 16gb ram and put an ssd along with 600gb hdd im gonna try to replace keyboard, touchpad, and try to see whats going on with this fan
personally i broke the air flow window without unscrewing anything and the metal one and cleaned the fan from outside now my laptop looks like shit , thanks hp, great engineering
+anon-iraq U know...... that sounds like far easier solution then to spend hours unscrewing and detaching bunch of stuff before getting to the part you need... Darn it how hard it is to make damn lids in the fan areas!? HP, any brains perhaps?
thak you so much! i checked out afew videos for the sole purpose of removing keyboard but none of them were clear like yours which you explained the process great vid helped me loads
Just saved me a lot of guessing how a couple of things came apart, my fan started screaming last week and today I got the final warning, "windows has detected a problem with your fan and will shut down in 15 seconds" I ordered a new fan and heatsink last week But the Heatsink was wrong, so just replaced my fan with the new one. Thanks from North Carolina, USA
This was fantastic and well-paced. I was having difficulty figuring out how the video cable threaded through to the motherboard, but you helped me get there!
Very helpful. I found a piece of plastic stuck in my laptop fan. With one hiccup (did not seat RAM properly) it went back together and is working. Who would have thought it could be done without more grief? That is, as long as you have someone else walking point and taking a video along the way.
I just realized that none of my USB ports are working. I'm thinking that I did not reconnect one of those bus wires. Do you have some idea which of the connections control the USB ports?
These laptops are a pain in the ass but they are actually very nice as far as speed and especially sound and video go. I will give this model of DV7 an 8 out of 10 which could be higher if access to components were simpler. When I got this the battery had been glued into place with silicone glue, not much but enough to keep me from getting it out until I decided it had to be removed to fix the overheating or be thrown in the trash pile. That was when I put some pressure into pulling the battery out and to my surprise, it only needed a tiny bit more force than I had tried before. This is one HUGE problem down and now I am off to rip out the guts and make everything new again. Out of all the laptops I have worked on (hundreds of them) this one ranks up there with the most difficult to access. THANKS BUT NO THANKS HP!
Thanks for posting video, i had noisy fan and had trouble disassembling case to get mother board out, finally did with your help, and got new fan put in, all good, Thanks !!!!!!!!
THANKS THANKS THANKS..... u helped me a lot with your video.... Just one thing.... you were too close to get the fan out.... just turn the motherboard and pull from the black part of the fan.... not the silver one.... and u got it... thanks again....
Excellent video! Thank you for the help! I had been stuck on how to remove the top cover. Saw another video and the guy just ripped off the top with a knife and cut his finger open. But there are the two screws under the keyboard. So either he broke it....or the screws were previously removed. Thank you again :)
Thanks for this. It helped me immensely. I had to order the fan all the way from china to get a new part but it worked. After years of collecting dust it's working again. Unfortunately the windows 10 upgrade is pretty much mandatory now and my graphics card is not supported by win 10. So I guess I'll need to buy a new laptop eventually anyway. Still it was cool to fix the computer for next to nothing cost vise.
thanks for the video. I know this was a while ago. other people have mentioned you can reapply thermal paste if it still overheats. I've done that to multiple laptops and the fans hardly spin afterwards. thermal paste dries out over time. they make thermal pads that can be used in place of thermal paste.
you can replace the fan alone I did that one year ago i bought it from ebay for 5 dollars and it is working up to this day. to remove the fan you have to remove the screws on the metal cover and the sticky tape, then pull it from each side slightly away from the exhaust vent.
Those fans cleaning it won’t do the trick. I have the same Laptop and I ended it up replacing it because of all the dirt and grime inside the heat sink. Great video 👍🏽 by the way
Usually, when the fan is working and clean and still overheating you have to take the fan off the CPU and remove the hardened Heatsink Compound and add a new compound before reassembling. This will reduce the temp. up to 20 Deg.C
Hello! I'd like to ask you some info, I have a laptop hp dv7-6b41el, I had problems at the pc, I checked and the motherboard was completely melted, the rest is all working, I searched in internet for that specific motherboard model, but there isn't, however, I find the motherboard "in general" dv7-6000 series, although it is not dv7-6b41el should not change anything, at least in base of what I know, right? ps: where I could buy it at a cheap price?
Hello,i cleaned the fan, changed the paste on the gpu and pcu.I assembled it,everything is working fine but the sound. If i move the laptop the sound is going to be jammed. If i shake the laptop its gonna be alright then again shit.I`m sure its one of the cable but cant find it.Any idea whats wrong?
can someone tell me if this is worth doing if my dv7t-7000 quad edition's fan is rattling ? i feel like it should just upgrade my work laptop but i just recently built a new gaming desktop pc
I used a vacuum cleaner, like a Karcher or so,instead of sucking the air,i blew the air through the vent holes. Then i sucked the air out of the vent holes, and now the coolers are dustfree and no more heating of my laptop.
Thanks - this was very helpful. You may find this maintenance manual useful also: h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03043778 as well as these videos: ruclips.net/video/zJKdO6yKQuI/видео.html ruclips.net/video/NLd00jnRwTY/видео.html The final part is to remove the fan motor assembly: ruclips.net/video/zJKdO6yKQuI/видео.htmlm11s 1. Unscrew the 4 little screws that hold the fan assembly (plastic part). 2. Slide the fan assembly toward the copper tube (in the direction of the bracket that normally holds the display cable). 3. Lift it up. 4. Look for dust inside the copper radiators of the heat sink assembly and clean it. This solved the problem mostly - made my laptop quieter and heating less - but I believe that the cooling system of this series of HP laptops has a design flaw.
cant get top off, still something holding it down at top center-left area! grrrrrr rather keep larger or thicker system then go through this. arid i will most likely break it now.
Dude your havung over heating provlems not because of the fan but because of the heat sink compound... The manufacturer compound on these things gets dry and hard over time and becomes inefficient in transfering heat to heat sink and then the fan cools it but if the heat ismy being transfered then the fan sony going to matter... So replace the compound with fresh stuff guarantee it will fix your over heating issue
okaay...so after watching the WHOLE vidoe...the stupid fan is STILL attached...smh as much as i like my dv7 i think it's time for something else that hopefully will last a bit longer
I had the same thought. All you need to do is detach the heat sink (screws remain in place). Peel the entire heat sink back - be careful not to upset the thermal paste. Then you can remove the fan and reassemble.

Hi 👋
I disassembled my old laptop today the way you teach.
Cleaned the fan and assembled back successfully.
Thank you 🙏
Great , Glad i could help after all this years posted that video.

My fan died and I ordered a new heatsink and fan replacement. This video helped me a lot. Thank you very much.
It's 2019 and i've just managed to repair my old DV7 6130ew thanks to your video. Thank u fam!
im about to do the same bro wish me luck! parts are pretty cheap but this laptop is still great 16gb ram and put an ssd along with 600gb hdd im gonna try to replace keyboard, touchpad, and try to see whats going on with this fan

Thanks a lot.
I'm more a software guy,
however I followed your video tutorial step by step, I cleaned the fan, and now my HP DV7 works better.
personally i broke the air flow window without unscrewing anything and the metal one and cleaned the fan from outside
now my laptop looks like shit , thanks hp, great engineering
+anon-iraq U know...... that sounds like far easier solution then to spend hours unscrewing and detaching bunch of stuff before getting to the part you need...
Darn it how hard it is to make damn lids in the fan areas!? HP, any brains perhaps?
me too :(
Mine broke a long time ago... cheap plastic parts and unnecessarily difficult to replace parts.
thak you so much! i checked out afew videos for the sole purpose of removing keyboard but none of them were clear like yours which you explained the process great vid helped me loads

tumza relaxing and thanks for taking the time to comment
I just realized that none of my USB ports are working. I'm thinking that I did not reconnect one of those bus wires. Do you have some idea which of the connections control the USB ports?
Fantastic guide; concise, clear and no messing about with intros!
Great, im glad you found it helpful.
Great video. Helped me walk through the breakdown process with no problems!!!!

Which heat sink paste did you use and how much was the fan?
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It was the most detailed information that I could find on this model, and was very helpful.
I'm Glad i could help
THANKS THANKS THANKS..... u helped me a lot with your video....
Just one thing.... you were too close to get the fan out.... just turn the motherboard and pull from the black part of the fan.... not the silver one.... and u got it...
thanks again....
Thanks a lot man, I have followed your instructions to the letter, and rebuilt the whole thing, and it works as good as before!!!!
Pleasure.

Your good. I took my motherboard out and I fixed the cooling issue with compressed gas. Can't believe I did it!
Good here U fixed it

Your welcome Mr Diego. You look like a happy guy overall on your photo
you can replace the fan alone I did that one year ago
i bought it from ebay for 5 dollars and it is working up to this day.
to remove the fan you have to remove the screws on the metal cover and the sticky tape, then pull it from each side slightly away from the exhaust vent.
enjoyed taking my journey with you friend. Wish you happiness in 2017 =)
Great, Thanx,
Those fans cleaning it won’t do the trick. I have the same Laptop and I ended it up replacing it because of all the dirt and grime inside the heat sink. Great video 👍🏽 by the way
The tip about getting the keyboard out was worth the watch alone. At 15:57.
thnx
Thank you very much. Problem solved ! Regards from Berlin , Germany
Thanks for making this video! It was very helpful.
Thank u for ur vid ! You helped me save my computer :)
You save-me boy, thanks. The Brazil appreciate your help
Great staff . My pleasure
Did you ever reapply thermal compound between the heatsink and CPU and GPU? That's most likely why you're still overheating.
Nice presentation. Thanks.
you are welcomed. This laptop is Considered old under the curent Ai Era,but im happy people still find this video useful.
very nice video. shows nice tricks. thank you
best one for me. Thanks!
The fan slides right out of the intake vent when you remove the tiny screws that attach it. No need to force anything. Got it for $12 on Amazon.
Really useful, thanks!
Very helpful! Thank you! :)
Helpful video! 👍👍👍

Sounds like a troll.. or he can't spell and has no idea about other cultures

i have the same lap, i want upgrade ram, i have only 4 giga..what you consuel? 8 or 16 giga? ddr2 or 3 or 4?

thanks dude, this helped me a lot :D
to remove the fan turn the motherboard over and you can easily pull the plastic part of the fan.
Tank you Man !!!
Thanks a lot, very helpfull
Thank you dude.
thank u very much!
You can wiggle the fan out of the covering once the entire cooling module is detached from the motherboard.
can someone tell me if this is worth doing if my dv7t-7000 quad edition's fan is rattling ? i feel like it should just upgrade my work laptop but i just recently built a new gaming desktop pc
Does all the laptops fans are hard to reach like this one??!
Yep, designed obsolescence. They make them so we throw them away after 4 years and buy new.
I used a vacuum cleaner, like a Karcher or so,instead of sucking the air,i blew the air through the vent holes.
Then i sucked the air out of the vent holes, and now the coolers are dustfree and no more heating of my laptop.
very useful
do the screws from the bottom attach to the top cover?
Darsy, yes. All except 2 at the top. See the service manual.
Nice job
Thanks
Where's the reassembly video?
Thanks - this was very helpful. You may find this maintenance manual useful also: h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03043778

Need a tube of thermal paste
At the end you say you're going to show us how to put it back together but you never do! I hope I can't do this on my own...
Omg bro im There with you😰
okaay...so after watching the WHOLE vidoe...the stupid fan is STILL attached...smh
as much as i like my dv7 i think it's time for something else that hopefully will last a bit longer
ironically very similar in they way they build apple laptops except you clearly see heat pipes on the graphics card
I had the same thought. All you need to do is detach the heat sink (screws remain in place). Peel the entire heat sink back - be careful not to upset the thermal paste. Then you can remove the fan and reassemble.
Hey, you never showed us how to put it back together!
Lol... just do everything in reverse
my fans dead how can I replace it
you can replace the fan alone I did that one year ago
i bought it from ebay for 5 dollars and it is working up to this day.
to remove the fan you have to remove the screws on the metal cover and the sticky tape, then pull it from each side slightly away from the exhaust vent.
If you BLOCK your camera, the viewer CAN'T SEE WHAT THE HELL YOU'RE DOING.
no time for this... ;/
Anyone know what I can do my screen doesn't work the lights shows that it's on but it's just the screen that doesn't work /:
I have the exact same problem, till 2016. Just found the laptop againg and trying to found the solution again.
