I know it's not all fun and games for you guys, but your passion for the sport comes through in every video. You're living the old mantra, love what you do, and do what you love.
I appreciate that!
I love the screams of joy going down. Alta is such a fabulous playground!!
My three takeaways from this series in Al-tuh… Em’s new Salomon kit looked wonderful. Hope she gets to keep it. Thanks for NOT editing out your backward’s tomi, Jeff. I really like the top sheets on the Blank & X and I’m so so with the 106. You five are all amazing skiers and each bring unique styles to the table. Bravo.
Great takeaways! The falls are some of the funnest parts!
Great Skiing! Nice to see you guys had good timing with your trip out west.
Love seeing crossover comments like this in the ski community!
Thanks Elliot!
00:21:10 captures the magic essence of a pow day so well. haha weeeee
Just fun to watch you guys.
Skiessentials should move headquarters to Salt Lake City
That looked like so much fun! I know you had to film for us and we very much appreciate that, but damn that looked like two great days at Alta! Love the Salomon line (not just the QST’s) and they do play really well at Alta and honestly anywhere.
I do think we can schedule a come ski with Ski Essentials day for your third day at Alta. Hell, I’ll coordinate the damn thing if you guys are game.
Awesome to see you all out on the slopes having a blast and giving us your unfiltered opinions on the skis while on the hill. Awesome job to all ya’s!!!!
Thanks so much! We're always looking for new opportunities.
What a great powder skiing video! Thanks for sharing.
It was also quite fun to participate in!
I ski Alta every weekend during ski season, it’s my home base. Salomon QST line is my favorite, I have the Blanks, QST 106, 106 Echo and am thinking of getting the X….great video, glad you got out here this year
It's one of the more comprehensive and well-designed lines out there, making great skis for a huge, wide variety of skiers.
I really enjoyed this one. Great conditions, great skiing from everyone and some insights as to what I might need when I bail out of my Florida paradise and move to MT.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great series. Gotta love Alta (but don't tell your friends😅).
It's funny, ever since we went two years ago, I've followed them on IG, and it doesn't seem like they're keeping their powder a secret AT ALL! There seems to be a lot of snow to go around, but I was shocked at how busy it was there the Sunday we arrived and into Monday.
Bob forever changed the landscape with that turn! ✊⛷️
Going to re-watch this in July!
Ha! Effective strategy!
Man you guys are so lucky to get that incredible snow in late March ! Crazy dry snow, and a ton of it ! 😅😊
It just kept snowing, and I think that's a big part of the allure of this place. If you want to ski powder, your chances are very good at this place.
I love this series! Do you know if they updated the blank this year or is the construction similar to the 24’?
Same build, slightly different graphic.
The girl rides just great, technique, style, confidence - everything is on top!
Will pass these nice compliments along to the girl!
Yes Emily has a more technically correct top of the turn using ski design instead of trying to overpower it like the guys! 😉
4:14 🙃 it be like that sometimes
Gravity is undefeated.
i probably should have paid more attention to the skis but i was lost in the conditions..
When the perfect skis for the perfect conditions come together .... amazing! How could it get any better?
It's funny, because we talk about the flip side of that coin here at Stowe whenever we test out front side skis. Nobody seems to get as excited as they do when powder skis are used in powder, however.
Great video as always! Just one question: I am thinking about getting myself a QST 106, moving from a Rustler 10 (180) from 2019/20 which is starting to break (after many days of joy). My main doubt is the height of the new pair. I have enjoyed the Rustler a lot, but if I had to buy another one, I would probably go for the 186 and not the 180. I am 180 myself, 75kg, would consider myself expert but it’s all relative :). Bottom line question is: for the QST 106, should I go for the 181 or the 189? On the video Bob seem to refer to 186, but unless I am mistaken, there is no such height for the QST 106. Also, I have seen some QSTs in shops and seem to appear longer than their actual height (maybe less rocker than the Rustler?). Thanks a lot! David (from Spain)
Perhaps I was meaning the 186 in the Blank. I think for your stats and application, the 181 would be a better fit. They are certainly heftier feeling and more sturdy than the Rustler 10.
Didn't fall terribly is always a win
While Jeff's was the only one caught on camera, we each had moments of losing to gravity, but none terribly.
Hi Jeff , nice review video! Curious that what's the brand and model of the length adjustable ski poles?
Thanks! It's a Salomon QST Carbon S3 pole.
Nice video! Hi Jeff, what salomon ski goggles model were you wearing? It matches you sweet protection helmet nicely!
They're new for next year--can't quite remember the name, but they do fit nicely!
Most locals say Alta as in altitude. However, if it is named after Alta Badia in Italy it would be the other pronunciation.
I think I still have the Italy pronunciation stuck in my head. Also, since I'm of French-Canadian descent, I pronounce Aunt with the U rather than the Americanized "Ant" so that may trip me up as well.
How would the 106 compare to a faction prodigy 3.0 - especially at Alta (cuz that's where I ski)
Prodigy is generally more flexible in the tips and tails while the 106 is stiffer, especially in the tail. I think that more playful and creative skiers will find more in common with the Prodigy while more directional and aggressive skiers will enjoy the sturdiness and consistency of the QST 106.
Great video! Last winter I ve got the Blank, 178 and I like so much that I got the 186 cm for those deep pow days at Revy. The 178 became my daily drive, that ski is so much fun and quick turning! It almost doesn't matter what is in front of me those skis will get me through!
I also found a distinct difference between the 186 and the 194. I'm almost hesitant to go to the longer one, but if you want to point it and get the resulting stability, the long ski is happy to do so!
Any concern on the X or Blank being too long for shorter people under 5’8”/172cm? The shortest ski in both is 178. I know Emily is short and rode 1 but some of us are not as talented riders☺️
Also 4:15 can you elaborate on the cause of going down?
Slight concern. The X is lighter than the Blank, although it's wider, so there's a bit of hope here. For non-experts, I think it's a tough sizing structure. As for the fall, things just go sideways sometimes!
Jeff - looking for a west ski. Vermont skier, daily driver is Serpo - looking at Atris, QST - 54 yo, 200-lbs advanced skier, go out west 1,2 per year - what would be your pick?
Atris and 106 QST are great--the Salomon has a better on-trail personality while the Atris is more playful and freeride oriented in the deeper stuff. If you encounter groomers at all, the QST is a more satisfying product.
@@SkiEssentials Thanks Jeff. So for a 1 west ski, QST 106 or Blank
@@chrispaschke5689 1 western ski I think the 106 will be more useful more of the time.
how does the X feel on the firmer stuff?
No idea.
That's not entirely true. When we skied them here in Stowe the other week, it was a mix of wind blown snow and scoured surfaces. They certainly SOUND different on firmer snow as they feature the lighter build with karuba and poplar. The Blank feels considerably denser when encountering firmer and more packed snow.
What are those goggles from Salomon called
Aah, totally forget what they're called. They're new for next year so might not be up on Salomon's site right now, but they're great!
The goggles are called the Sentry Pro
What poles are those?
Salomon's MTN Carbon S3 LTD poles.
What about 106 Echo?
They had it, but we chose not to ski it, mainly because we were downhill only. I've skied it here in Stowe and really enjoyed it, but if you're looking for a bit more stability and power, the regular 106 is the place to be.
I’m born and raised in Utah, Joe and Noah are correct, it’s pronounced “AL-tuh” as in “Altitude”, like you said, it’s like the name AL and then “tuh” so “AL-tuh” it is not “ALL-tuh”. 👍🏼
Fine, we'll say it the correct way from now on.
Is that heaven?
Alta offers some amazing skiing and probably your best chances of powder--lots and lots of snow here.
LOL, when r u guys going to learn to ski farther back from each other when you are videoing!! And then you crash! HA. How would you compare the snow conditions in this video to the snow that you guys had in sun valley when you tested there? It looked like comparable conditions, except you did not have the salomons? and what rating would you give the new salomon goggles you were wearing? and after all is said and done what were you (bob /jeff) fav salomon model for this trip??
Definitely a learning curve in the powder, but we're still going to stay close on groomers so that you all can see the ski bend. The Utah snow is softer and lighter. Love the Salomon goggles! The swapping of lenses is not nearly as easy as it is on the magnetic style, so negative points for that. Favorite model on my (bob's) end was the QST X.
@@SkiEssentials what was jeffs fav model for the trip??
I wish more ski manufacturers took a cue from companies like Icelantic, or almost every snowboard company, who make their top sheets artwork. I'm sure these skis are great, but they're just so bland looking.
I think that's an important difference between more mainstream companies like Salomon, Nordica, Volkl, etc, in that they want their graphics to be more all-encompassing. Smaller brands, and snowboards, need to be more individualistic and artistic to stand out more. Within these big brands, though, they do take some creative liberties from time to time, like Volkl's Revolt series.
Anybody who thinks that Stowe is icy, should come ski New Hampshire.
As a former Loon skier who moved to Stowe and never looked back, I can mainly attest to this statement.
Loon, Cannon, Gunstock and Wildcat; if you can ski the Ice Coast, you can ski anything.
