I have two turbocharged Hondas, and I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the SVOs as well as the Merkurs. The 2.3 Lima is a very capable engine and is easily modified in stock form. I had a 94 Exploder that came with a 4.0, but I swapped in a 302 and put an Explorer Express supercharger kit with an Eaton M90 on it and it went on to make 490 whp with a smaller pulley (more boost), 90 lb injectors, a Walbro in-tank 450 LPH fuel pump, and it ran on an old school piggyback ECU. I bought a black one new in 85 and unfortunately everything went wrong with that car. It was in the shop all the time but it was still under factory warranty. Ended up trading it in on a black 87 GT with Ttops and I never looked back.

i bought my 85 1/5 competition prep SVO for $13,800. not all that much more than late 84 GT i bought new. The Ford dealer i got SVO from wanted to renegotiate the price up after ordering it by $800. I said "NOPE", as i waved the P&S contract in their face. P.S. they had 10 buyers waiting to buy it as it sat in their lot while getting prepped for delivery. I sold my SVO 2 years later with 25 K mi....for $16K cash (try that with a GT back then). I was the ONLY one to ever sell out of a lease at one of the biggest Ford dealers in the area
Just wanted to say, love the new intro, I meant to comment on it the last couple of times, That said the SVO is really nice (early) model Foxbody, they did take from the SVO when they made the 87 & later GT with ground affects, split with 5.0 LX models. The fact was the SVO was close to the same price as the GT model with V8 or turbo 4cyl., more so people picked the V8 GT model. Oh yeah what up with Fox Chamber??
Thanks, It was actually and older intro that I hadn't used for a long time, but I like it too. You're right that the SVO did impact a lot of the later FoxBody's built. The Fox Chamber put up a very funny video recently. Apparently I'm in the FoxBody illumanati! LOL

All original DA!. Need rims polished be great. Mettalic gray. Out of Phoenix. Would not take less than 26,000. Well worth it.
SVO guys can commiserate with AOD guys and the vert gang as they are all somewhat unloved. Since I have an AOD vert that I love I can join right in feeling the pain. ;)
Maybe it's the recessed lights or the wheels? I don't know... You're right, the SVO isn't my favorite Fox. Just looks Wonky. I know it performs very well though
I bought an SVO in Dec 1984. It had to be towed to the dealer one week after purchase. It was in the shop for forty out of the first 90 days I owned it. I PAID to rent a car for those 40 days. I got rid of it the next spring. I only buy Hondas or Toyotas now. Great to drive ( when running ). Over 30 mpg. I still hate Fords.

There were debates at Ford wether to put a V6 or 4 cylinder in the SVO but they wanted to do something to really impress the automotive industry so in went the 2.3 Turbo. The automotive press repeatedly noted the very unbalanced 2.3 and Ford did nothing to fix it. My brother had a standard 2.3 in a 79 Fairmont. I drove an SVO at a car auction in 1995 and in my opinion it’s a terribly unbalanced engine that often doesn’t even make it to 100,000 miles before it needs a turbo or a complete engine rebuild. So when I bought a Pace Car in 1987 I got a V8.
I've seen many svo go very far with normal maintenance, not to mention they can handle lots of power and have an awesome oiling system. The 2.3 turbo had been in mustangs way before the svo so they had things ironed out very well by the time 1984 came around.
Yeah that 2.3 engine is an old design. I thought I read somewhere it was a German designed engine. They were put in the Ford Capris made in Europe. The Merkur XR4ti’s had them. I graduated in 1985 and in the 1980’s I religiously read anything Ford I could find in magazines. What makes me shake my head going on Facebook forums and mention things like the rare 1984-3/4 Mustang GT which had a 205hp engine, different T-5 transmission ratios, different size sway bars and a few other tweaks specific to it but different than the 1985 GT and also different than earlier 1984 GT’s,,, and other members of the group who are know it all’s say I’m making it up. The 1984-3/4 Mustang GT 302 that had a 5 speed manual was very close to the 1985 GT 5 speed engine minus the roller cam.
@@MustangsTrainsMowers if you think about it though the 302 is an even older design appearing in the 60s the 2.3 didn't come around untill the 70s and died in the 90s. But the 2.3 has a cult following I swapped my 79 pace car with an 85 svo drivetrain when I was in highschool and it was a fun car compared to the carb 2.3 turbo engine. I had a buddy with an ssp coupe and I'd walk that car everytime whether from a roll or a stop.
That 2.3 will never have the following that the 302 has. I’m sure that when you rebuilt a 2.3 have a machine shop balance it and it would run smoother. If I had an SVO I’d consider a roller cam 351w swap but Minnesota is getting the stupid California emissions standards in a few years. Our Governor Tim Walz is a moron.
NO V-8 in an SVO. 2.3 turbo is perfect match, has same HP as 5.0, 49 / 51 balance. endless fun in a cool AF package. change timing on dash, adjustable 6 koni red shocks, 50 series tires, 16" lug centric rims, functional ground affects, dual wing spoiler & hood scoop, 140 MPH speedo (has tags over 85 MPH), hurst short throw shifter, 4 wheel disc brakes, leather wrapped steering wheel, E brake handle, leather or cloth seats options, ALL SVOs are 5 spd, premium radio etc...
@@GearHead704 no they were much more back in the day. i remember bringing my new 85 1/2 comp prep to a 'run what you bring day' at eping speedway... i was too late to get a number until i told em what i had lol. when i got back to the car there was a big crowd around it, they asked me many questions about SVO... that never happened with my new late 84 GT lol
In my opinion #1 most hated fox body is any with an LS swap. #2.1980-82 Tbird aka box bird. It reminds me of a brick you throw at seagulls. #3 Granada. SVO isn't even in the top 10 worst. However all 4cyl mustangs sit lower in the hierarchy but still think any SVO ranks higher than a 4cyl Automatic vert, aka the parts car.
I answered this several days ago, but RUclips is being weird on responding to some comments. We really have thought about it actually. Maybe after Foxtoberfest this year.
The styling is my biggest complaint. The front fascia looks like a person with a larger nose and a weak chin, which is why the Saleens looked so good with the added air dam. The spats are a poor substitute for full-length skirts. Suspension and brakes were far ahead of the 5.0, given the limitations of the 4-link. The buzz is that Ford was developing a 16-valve head for the 1987 model year but shelved the idea. Too bad because it would have been amazing.
Imagine if Ford came out with a New SVO right now Rwd and Awd only with a 6Spd Tremec that handles like a lotus Elise with Honda Civc tuning and aftermarket support. This Mustang would sell like Hotcakes just being honest and Ford Knows it
i love the SVOs, best seats ever in a fox body, factory Recaros. not bagging on his car, but SVOs have ugly wheels, and ugly headlights, i think thats what kinda turned people off that didnt know what they were. its wierd. those cars with just a few mods easily out perform a stock 5.0 fox. i really liked them back in the day with the dual rear spoilers.
@@foxchassis while technically being correct, they are different from standard mustang seats of the day having thier own unique upholstry and unique padding and foam that are SVO only. everyone thinks they are recaros, and i doubt anyone knows or cares anything about Lear seating outside of maybe Detroit and my cousin Dave who works there.
I just think its ugly….thats about it. I love the fox body but that front end kills it for me. Not to mention those hideous factory wheels! It does have its good points and being 5 lug you have a ton of wheel options.
Probably because they took all the good parts that they could have put on the GT, a V8, rear drive car and wasted it on a car that didn't cater to core Mustang enthusiasts. THEN, to add insult to injury, when they discontinued it, they didn't transfer all those nice goodies over to the GT. Can you imagine a GT with a turbocharger, 5 lugs and 4 wheel disc brakes? What could have been....Yeah, still haven't forgiven Ford for that one....
That would have been LEGENDARY. A Vette contender, and for all intents and purposes, FASTER. Grand National? No contest.. Damn you, Ford, I still to this day think we were cheated out of a GREAT combination...Ford should make Mustangers whole and send us the parts for free, 😂
I answered this several days ago, but RUclips is being weird on responding to some comments. That would have been so cool to have a GT put together like that.
All in all Ford hit the target in the performance/ turning department with the SVO. Of course that was many years back. I'm a new edge dude. I have a mustang gt that is around 20 years newer than the svo. The gt handles like crap on turning compared to a vette around the same year. My point is mustangs were a one trick pony back then. Even 20 years later they still were. The new edge mach 1 was probably the first year of some ok handling. I believe it had the same brand of upgraded shocks as the svo. I like the svo...I'd take it over the fox gt. I did own a fox gt and never could get use to it being mine. The giant headlights was probably the biggest flaw to the looks in my book. I think the svo interior and wheels were nicer than gt... apples to apples 84 vs 84 year models. History can't be changed... the masses only loved the v8 mustang. I appreciate all cars and makes though. I almost bought an svo about 2 years ago. Maybe I should try again since most people don't want them... don't change my mind about the facts that are upgrades on the svo.
What's to hate about an older convertible muscle or pony car? They traditionally bring more money in the collector car market and can give a pleasurable driving experience.
You have so much wasted potential in it then. You can hit 250-260 on stock SVO parts without bumping injectors. And get around 300 after that. Very underrated

Just because it isn't a v8 don't mean it isn't fast. These things had potential could easily put down 300+ to the tires with fairly simple mods or about the same as an old 302 wkth a decent heads cam and intake package. Also these were more built towards handling they had 4 wheel discs and larger wheels and they weigh less and have better weight balance so for a car built for the twisties its actually a good starting point. Not every build is built for drag racing although they can be very respectable there. Im not saying I would rather have one over a v8 mustang but I'd def like to have one in addition to some v8 mustangs if I could.

I’m starting to take a liking to those SVO’s because they are something different and becoming extremely rare in my neck of the woods. Great video as always🙌🏼🏁
Yeah they are getting harder to find for sure. Thanks Paul!
I bought a black one new in 85 and unfortunately everything went wrong with that car. It was in the shop all the time but it was still under factory warranty. Ended up trading it in on a black 87 GT with Ttops and I never looked back.
That is what you call a GREAT trade up.
Btw, my belief is that the SVO was hated because it simply wasn't a 302. Same reason every other 4 or 6 cylinder Mustang was hated...because it wasn't a V8.
I agree.
same HP & about the same torque, with lot less weight
I think a lot of people hate the fact that the suspension the breaks things like that we're not offered on the GT at the time or any 5-liter car
I think you are right and I didn't realize that until after posting this video.
@@GearHead704 I mean I do think the SVO was a good car it's a sick looking car with that front end treatment I've seen a lot of people swap the front ends from those cars onto V8 cars or they ditch the 4-cylinder altogether for a V8 swap but I have yet to see a coyote swapped SEO
actually the cobra had them, also svo tailights were cobra lol
Hey great update on that SVO definitely looks like a fun car with the mods that are done to it.
I really used to hate them when I was younger the only thing I cannot stand about them still is that double stack Wing and I'm not much for how far the headlights sit back from the marker lights I know it changes and I believe 86 but other than that those cars came with some great features especially for back then... I'm really wanting a turbo coupe T-Bird but haven't been able to find one I want to get one for my daughter she wants a fox and I feel a little safer with her in a bigger car it just seems a little heavier and more solid for a first driver. it would be a fun driving project for us! (and I think it would be a lot cheaper than the 69 Chevelle that she really wants lol) someday 1 will be in my collection 68/69 is a dream car I had a 68 chevelle&69Elcamino and I let go when I was 19&24 SMH 😢🥺

Idk... I was a teen in the early 80s. I don't remember hating the SVO.
What I did hate was seeing an "L" or an "LX" 2.3L with a 5.0 badge on the side, which was more common.
Hah hah, good points all around, I forgot about he badges. Yeah man I love the SVO's
Test drove an SVO when they were at the dealership near me.
Oh that's cool. I still haven't driven one.
Man I luv the 2.3 turbo am in the works of swapping a 88 tbird tc engine into my 90 notchback mustang man that’s the only car they forgot to put 2.3 turbo they even made a convertible gt turbo but sadly no coupe
Yeah that would've been awesome in the coupe.
All Foxbody’s are great cars in my opinion I love them all
Well said.
Nice video! Big things coming to Tar Heel fox? Turbo? ;-)
LOL, nothing that exciting Frank. It was great to see you called out on the Fox Chambers video by the way.
I had a chance to purchase a SVO 7 yrs ago running! The guy only wanted 1,500 for it.. now I am regretting not getting it! It would be in garage next to my 88 GT vert right now. SMH.
I also had a chance to buy one around that time, I think for 5k, but it was low mileage and in great shape. I also regret not pulling the trigger 😩
I wish Ford would bring back out the Svt Contour Rwd and Awd this time with the 2.3 or 2.5 6spd would be nice also the Probe Mazda 2.3 Awd or Rwd drive and a Handling package and easy to tune.

i bought my 85 1/5 competition prep SVO for $13,800. not all that much more than late 84 GT i bought new. I was the ONLY one to ever sell out of a lease at one of the biggest Ford dealers in the area

same HP, near same torque & lighter as 5.0
Just wanted to say, love the new intro, I meant to comment on it the last couple of times, That said the SVO is
really nice (early) model Foxbody, they did take from the SVO when they made the 87 & later GT with ground
affects, split with 5.0 LX models. The fact was the SVO was close to the same price as the GT model with V8
or turbo 4cyl., more so people picked the V8 GT model.
LOL

Yeah, for what it was at the time I was great, but the v8 is definitely preferred by many.
@@GearHead704 it's more the looks than what it's equipped with under the hood... At least for me.
@Brett Yarborough Ive thought about converting the flush headlights to the recessed as well. I just think the recessed look slightly more aggressive
One thing for sure that is one straight foxbody with the 4 cylinder the bodies twists in the 5.0 liters that engine looks tiny in there !
Definitely a lot more room in the engine bay for sure.
I bought an SVO in Dec 1984. It had to be towed to the dealer one week after purchase.
It was in the shop for forty out of the first 90 days I owned it. I PAID to rent a car for those 40 days.

Interesting, I hadn't heard that myself. I know some guys build them for big power.
Yes, I love the SVO's, cool Fox's for sure.
In my opinion, this isn’t a bad svo. I think the early sn svo are by far worse. These days anyway. Maybe when they first came out, they caught hell.
Hey dude! I think they are much more appreciated today.
Definitely not much love for LS swaps, but surprisingly still a lot of those too. I agree SVO is not the most hated.
You should take his advice and start a family like channel with your wife
Wow, I had no idea about that head, and YES that would have been awesome!
I don't hate them, I just never cared for the look of the SVO's. The double rear spoiler, the recessed headlights, and the Mercedes-looking wheels.

@@GearHead704 Yeah, I've noticed a lot of weird things going on with the comments too.

I agree that would be cool.
Ford leadership ensured that the SVO wouldnt be a success by not allowing the SVO to have more horsepower than the 5.0.
I've got to agree with this.
The huge price difference for a SVO over a GT was a deal breaker as well.
Imagine if Ford came out with a New SVO right now Rwd and Awd only with a 6Spd Tremec that handles like a lotus Elise with Honda Civc tuning and aftermarket support. This Mustang would sell like Hotcakes just being honest and Ford Knows it

I think you're right, for a lot it's the headlights
Factory 'sport' seats, since model year 1983, were made my Lear Siegler (LSI). Last year for factory Recaro seats in the Mustang was 1982.
@@foxchassis not in the SVO.
Yes, even the SVO had LSI seats. They were not Recaros. I have tags from SVO seats. All of them say LSI.

Probably because the owners group (forum) were a bunch of tools. Actually thought they could yell you what to do with your car.
I've heard that about them. What a great way to embrace people interested I'm their cars ugh. I hate the forum's.
That would have been so cool to have a GT put together like that.
sadly too many GT guys robbed parts from SVOs for their boring GT
I think the SVO's can still be had for a bargain. Definitely try and pick one up.

Anything that I think is a hot rod, rat rod sports car,if it dont have a v8 or bigger..then it's a grocery getter family car...I prefer SIT DOWN..SHUT UP..AND HOLD ON...not let's go to Walmart hunny.
