    I wish Reed Timmer and others like him were around when I was younger. People thought I had a mental problem because of how obsessed I became with severe weather and the science behind it when I was a kid. I wanted to learn everything I could about weather phenomena and read every book I could borrow from the local public library (yes, I'm that old). Had my interest been enriched instead of shunned I more than likely would have pursued a career as a meteorologist in weather sciences instead of looking after computer network security all day. You guys rock. 🙂

      In highschool and after I used to chase storms as a hobby. I am that old too. Bigg ass VHS recorder, now radar like now and it was dangerous. But maybe not so much as today. Today people are real time and the money footage is so freakin close. But it was pretty much a Hobbie and if you caught footage you could sell it. But mainly it was fun because of the danger and fear in a storm. But you really had to watch the clouds and the storm itself instead of trusting a screen.

    Thank you for reiterating the danger of taking shelter under an overpass during strong winds/tornado. Why this life saving fact isn’t taught in schools is baffling. Maybe one day, during the “off season” or something, Reed can go out in different cities around the country & ask people on the street weather related questions. I’m sure it would be both entertaining & informative, especially with someone like Reed who has a VERY LARGE personality AND weather knowledge!!

      There are no "only/just" jobs. Remember that every single product or service is a cog in our society, and if what you do suddenly stopped, the domino effect would be immense. You could be manufacturing one of the springs used inside a variety of staplers, but imagine if that was eliminated nobody could staple anymore! Offices would be impacted obviously, but also construction and medicine.

    I heard the hail roar about 10yrs ago in North Central Illinois - a supercell had just ripped through the area overhead, dumping an unbelievable amt of rain; but I had heard that in the same storm, there was a dangerous hail core that narrowly missed us, passing just to our East. As soon as the downpour was over, I quickly went outside and looked to the East. Right away, I saw the opaque white column extending downward from the cloud base to the ground, into a forested area less than ½ mile from us. Right away, the person with me commented on the loud and sustained sound, as loud and deep as thunder but "smoother", if you know what I mean. We wondered aloud if it was a tornado on the ground, hidden behind and within the curtains of precipitation. Months later I had the chance to ask a meteorologist about it, and he knew right away it was the roar of all those hailstones smashing down, shredding the trees and undergrowth, and bashing against the wooden trunks & branches.
    I still perfectly remember the sound and feel of that roar. It left us staring dumbstruck, in awe of nature's awesome power. SO COOL

    • @EvilNeuro
      @EvilNeuro Год назад +4

      I always wondered what the roar I heard during a tornado warning was. There never was a confirmed tornado only a warning. I vividly remember a loud roar. It sounded crunchy- I doubt it was this roar tho, but it still confuses me to this day! I never heard that sound again EVER even when we had hail again I never heard it, it’s possible that with that storm we had large hail and maybe it was this, it just doesn’t make sense tho, it confuses me.

      I heard a lot of loud bangs from the hail and the sound of wind and rain. What is this hail roar?

  • @booease4241
    @booease4241 Год назад +11

    Hail roar was one of the scariest sounds I have heard. I sounded like thunder that didnt end combined with a type of static noise. It lasted about 45 minutes while a summer storm parked near where we lived.

  • @TN1965
    @TN1965 Год назад +20

    I've heard the hail roar a few times now. The first time, there was a large storm cell moving toward us, however, it was beginning to collapse and fall apart. Because this storm was collapsing, all the rain and hail in the top were rushing down in a microburst, which was conveniently headed straight for us. As the Storm moved in, It was calm, but this constant audible sound was growing louder and louder. At first, I thought it was wind because windstorms here sound a certain way, in the sense of how it blows through the trees. The sound itself sounded like a combination of thunder, the wind blowing through trees, and the whooshing sound a car makes as it drives by. This sound grew louder and louder, and it was around this time when I noticed that there was no wind but a massive wall of precipitation above us. Within a moment or two, it was whiteout conditions and large hail and rain, which lasted about 5 minutes before it was over. The second time it was preceding a large line of severe thunderstorms, quite the experience.

    I have been watching your videos and those of numerous other chasers and I had an idea of how to deal with hail. If you are driving a SUV or car with a roof rack, you could make a fixture to hold an expanded metal roof panel over just the roof when driving in no hail. At the front of the rack, you could put a hinge on it, so that when you encounter hail, you can flip the expanded metal so that it covers your windshield. All you would need on the part that meets your car are rubber foot to let it rest on the hood without damaging it. The expanded metal will allow you drive and see forward still and will also allow for your windshield wipers to work normally by letting water through. This rig could be made for a maybe 200-300$ by a person who welds or fabricates. You could go even further and make it so that you could have side panels that fold down to protect your side windows also.

    I've heard hail roar in strong supercells. It's caused by pierces of hail bumping together in the updraf.t Larger hail is falling or rising slower than smaller hail. And as a result, it all bumps together and sounds like a waterfall in the sky. A perfect example is the powerful supercell of 5-29-2004l in western and later central Oklahoma. A green tint is not from hail. Its from a large amount of liquid water in a thunderstorm. It ideally is seen when dewpoints are in the 70s.
