The Grateful Dead probably did know this when choosing the name. Their songwriting is full of religious symbolism and storytelling. They chose certain symbols that had an important Judaic representation to them (not the dancing bears, you will find them quickly if you really look). As their lyrics say, "Once and awhile you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right". Rest in Peace, Phillip, so glad I got to see you so many times I would not be the person I am today without you and the Grateful Dead.
Shabbat SHALOM EVERYONE,grew up with the dead since I was 12, 15, and this Box of rain is for my friend and his electric smile........I am 66 now and my phone keeps on making us all smile...🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️🌎🌎🌎🌎🌎🌎🌎 Reach out and show Sume kindness today......for Phil, and for all of us ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Shalom! May I please suggest to those who are unfamiliar with Mr. Philip Lesh, to listen to ‘Ripple’, & ‘Weather Report Suite’. The lyrics written by Mr. Robert Hunter, & Mr. John Barlow are my sacred music & my guide to daily living. Peace, Love & Music to all who read this.
SO glad to have found you! Someone posted your sermon on TikTok and I was desperate to find such a wonderful Rabbi! I hope your Shabbat services are online for those of us who are looking for them. Thank you so much!
This explanation of "grateful dead" is inaccurate; it's not the same as the idea of "Meit Mitzvah" in Jewish law, which is a person who dies somewhere with no one to attend to his/her burial & it's a special act of kindness for anyone who assumes the responsibility. The legend of "grateful dead", which originated in the UK, had to do with the soul of a deceased person that couldn't find rest, some unresolved business obstructing it from "letting go" to the next world, & those who understood this through whatever sort of telepathic means or through dreams would gather by the grave site & sing a ballad intended to soothe & release the restless soul, & either the ballad &/or the departed soul was called a "grateful dead". In Jewish tradition this would be related to the idea that for the first 30 days after burial, the soul of the departed 'hovers' near the gravesite where its former body is buried, not yet fully 'comfortable' with the separation, & recitation of certain prayers & psalms can possibly ease the transition for them. But the first name of the band was The Warlocks, which in the case of actual occult practitioners, Torah law forbids a Jewish person to be one or to consult one.
A Rabbi does not use a microphone on YomTov either- unless he decides he is allowed to make up his own rules. Then he is still a Jew, one who sins, but is not a Rabbi. We pray he repents.
RIP Phil Lesh 😢
