This film takes us on a journey to discover Rome, the greatest and most exceptional city of the ancient world. It unveils the secrets of Roman architecture and reveals the incredible talent of its builders. Also, the material used was exceptional as it contained volcanic ash. Lucky for us, we can still see so much of what the Romans built.

Ok, I get that, but wait for a moment. Let's back up to where they shipped the Columns from Alexandra to Roma.
I see the ship carrying the column. Now my question is, how did they lift the column up out of the ship and onto the transport..? This part I just can't believe.

Romans copied the Greeks first. What you see in the USA could be a mixture of both. The columns that this Constuction is known for it inherently Greek while the dome style were very Roman even though the Romans also included Greek styled columns in such construction.
It is timeless so building in this style is always going to look good while some of the "modern" buildings now will appear awfully dated in the future. The glass abominations for the 80's comes to mind.

Less technologically advanced, probably. The Roman Empire was pretty conservative with technological advancement as compared to the Middle Ages which followed. Indeed, much of the knowledge lost from the Ancient times to the Modern can be blamed on the Rapid Depopulation of the Crisis of the Second Century and the late empire burning books for heresy.

It would be nice to see a documentary on the economy of Rome. What made the city function? I think a lot of people didn't have jobs and just relied on a monthly allowance (food and cash) from the government. The gov't relied on conquest to gain revenue and food sources (like Egypt). Anyhow, I've watched a lot of Rome related documentaries but have yet to see one that covers how the economy made things function from the activities of the ordinary citizen to the merchants, craftsperson, politicians, soldier and all strata of society.

Not only was it possible to better see the main road through The Forum, but you realize that pretty much every "above" it is modern day block Italian construction. So The Forum sort of fills in a valley of Ancient Roman architecture (dismantled as it may be) from the modern city of Rome today. Too bad that this is not the overall encompassing view that you receive as a tourist on the ground.

Just remember that since Egyptian and Chinese civilization are 1000's of years older, the architectural designs and/or ideas began with them and not Rome.
Too often too many have this insane notion that Europe is society's birthplace when it's not. It made contributions but that's it.

*Columns* provide essential support; whereas *pillars* are just aesthetic often not connected to the ceiling.

Paldies, This was a very interesting story for me to hear, I've discovered that my father's grandfather was included in the deportees from 14 June 1941, it's important to educate ourselves about our families our history to really understand who we are and the people we came from, Thank you for allowing me to learn and connect to my family story through this video.

I would not consider any of the activities at the coliseum as a "grand spectacle." It was barbaric and horrific! Fascinating documentary, nonetheless.

Fascinating. On your ancient maps and models, what is that very large almost rectangular pool of water right in the middle of Trastevere?

Rings of chains were cast into the base of the dome to prevent spreading. This is a major omission in this film.
