Hello Mark... excellent extra video this week. I like the look and your review of the R89 and may have to give that one a go. You mentioned both the Merkur 33c and 34c as good candidates for beginner shavers... I have both and enjoy shaving with them. I have not tried the Proraso White but use the Green regularly and it does a good job for me... also comes in the giant size tube. I enjoy watching your savouring style of shaving. Have a great week and take care.
Hey mate. I hope you've had a good week. Those tubes are ridiculously large! I wonder how long one would last, using nothing else? I'd bet on year's worth of shaves. I seem to have picked a good razor this week. It was a brilliant shave but I wish Mühle would make an open comb version of the R89. That would be good. 😃👍
Thank you, Mark. Always nice to get an extra video during the week. I am still a beginner and don't have a lot of shaving kit. My starter DE razor was the Edwin Jagger DE89. I have the one with the smooth handle. It looks and feels lovely. I will be shaving with it today. I have a Zorrik super platinum blade in it at the moment which works nicely. I was interested in your recommendation for a beginners shaving brush. I haven't tried a synthetic yet. My first, and only brush, is the Omega 48 boar hair brush. As I haven't compared it to any others I shouldn't really comment, but I do like the Omega.
Hi David. The EJ razor is also a very nice shave - good choice 👍 The Omega boars are great but I've personally found the Semogue boars a little problematic; that was one of the reasons why I recommended synthetic brushes. I've yet to try a Zorrick - I have a packet but just haven't got around to it. Anyway, take care- see you soon 😃
I have tough, wiry, course, "old man" whiskers and have had many D.E. razors since I started in this hobby 4 years ago. With experience and practice, I get a BBS shave every time with my Muhle R-89. I previously used a Muhle R-41, but don't need to use that razor anymore. I could never shave against the grain with the R-41 without getting some irritation on my neck. The R-89 is not just a beginners razor. With practice, the Muhle R-89 (along with it's twin, the Edwin Jagger DE-89) can give anyone a shave that is both close and comfortable.
Hey Ben. I agree; I was trying to be careful and not say it was just a beginners razor; I don't know how successfully that came across. It is a great razor. You know it took me ages to be able to go against the grain; I certainly couldn't do it with a cartridge razor. Nightmare. All the best.
Those are good hardware tips for beginning DE shavers. I had started on a merkur 34c, synthetic brush and stirling soap. My only regret is not starting earlier with DE shaving. Take care.
A wonderful back to basics shave. Like you, I find the R106 to be more efficient, but overall the DE89/R89 family are all solid shavers--and not just for beginners. Thanks for the bonus video my friend!
I actually started out with the body shop soap and brush as well, and they were both quite good for a beginner. I however started out with a cheap TTO razor from shaver shop and made the mistake of using a feather blade first time round, needless to say I had a few nicks on my first shave. The Muhle R89 was my second choice and it is still a favourite alongside the Christopher Bradley razor from Karve. Although now after 3 years of wet shaving I have recently revisited the cheaper TTO razor with different blades and it actually performs quite well with a better technique and suitable blades.. Great shave Mark👍🏻
A Feather blade first time out! Brave man 😃 The Body Shop brushes and soap were alright; I'll bet quite a few men got it into wet shaving via Body Shop. I'm looking forward to trying the Karve razor, I must admit. Cheers.
Mark, you remind me to slow down a little when I shave. Have you ever tried angling the draw of the razor in those hard to reach areas like under the jaw? Rather than being perpendicular to the line of travel the razor head is angled slightly (don't over do it or ouch!). It effectively makes the razor narrower and causes the blade to slice the hairs rather than chop through them, Works for me but again don't overdo the angle!
Robert, I've just recorded this Friday's video but I'm going to try your suggestion for the next few shaves and see how I get along; you might see it on a video soon. It's a similar idea to the Gillette slide, kind of. Thank you for the suggestion, mate 😃👍
This is my go to razor and team it up with a Rapira LUX blade or sometimes a Feather - the alum I always follow up with Thayers Medicated witch hazel pain relief and the dual action Nivea aftershave and balm. The reckon everyone has their double and some of your profile shots I could be looking at myself - handsome beasts that we are LOL!!
I'm waiting for some Rapira Lux blades but I have recently discovered the Gillette 7o' clock blacks, which I really like. Are you serious John? You mean I could make money as your look a like 😃👍
+1 Cant go wrong with a R89 as a starter razor, my favourite is the R41. Don’t you find Mark every now and then and I don’t know why but you can get a really exceptional shave when you least expect it from razors like this.
Yes I do Gordon. I find it's quite often when I'm not really trying but I've kind of drifted into semi automatic mode and enjoying the moment. I really enjoyed that shave - it's a great razor.
The mystery of heads part 2... Who was there 1st, the hen or the egg, R89 + DE89 same, or not (we found the answer already). Especially the R89 head seems same as R106 + R108. I hv all 3, the Jagger + R89/108 n can say all 3 of them behave differently, not by much, but still. My own preferences DE89 + R108. Likely its YMMMV, cheers Mark.
Hey butty - You''re from the valleys 👍 I miss Wales. We might have this conversation before, if we have I apologise; I'm whacked out. I really like idea of the R89 with a bulldog handle. That sounds right up my street to be honest. Those lab blues are good. I think the med preps are quite expensive.
So I was lining up my beard last night with a cut throat razor. I tilted my head slightly and nicked my face close to my eye. Well anyways, I busted out my Muhle styptic pen and applied it to the cut. OMG my skin nearly jumped off my face (the agony). It wasn’t expected plus it was my first time needing to use it. True story💈😱💈
You were lucky you didn't get your eye! I sliced my chin by taking the razor off my face, to see how I was doing and tilting my head - that's the dangerous bit 😃 Yeah, that styptic makes you jump too. Thanks for sharing.
A synthetic brush is a good first brush. Get the technique down and then step up to a good badger brush. That's all you need. Proraso white is a great cream and excellent performer.
I think you've hit the nail on the head there, Matthew. The synthetics are really good but I love my silver tip 'Traveller' with the short loft. Terrific! Take care mate.
My advise would be start with a cheap good DE like Wilkinson Sword Classic so if its not for you , then you didnt spend a ton on the razor i still use my Wilkinson Sword classic now and then
That is very good advice, it is a terrific razor. I considered it, but I thought for a beginner it may possibly be a little more aggressive than the R89 but it is a great razor; I certainly do enjoy mine. I get the best shaves with those German WS blades.
Totally spot on as normal I started out early this year with my first razor the Muhle R106 just brilliant. Surprising extra video, looking forward to your Christoper Bradley Razor review.
I wonder how many shaves someone has in a lifetime? Yes, I have too much time on my hands this morning 🙂 I'm a little better today, thank you Paul. I hope you have a nice day.
A friend gave me a Gillette micro touch. I know it is not the quality of the 89 you are using , but is it any good? Mild or aggressive? I was considering the r89 grande. Thanks.
Hi Mark. I have never used the Micro Touch One but I suspect it is a rebranded Weishi razor. It'll be a mild, comfortable shave and is definitely worth trying. Here's an article that might interest you: sharpologist.com/micro-touch-one-razor-review/
Only just found your channel while looking into DE razors. Been wet shaving for 40+ years with the ever changing Gillette. Going to go with this razor or merkur 34c (thoughts)? My main worry changing over is I’ve always only done a one pass with the cartridges and every time I see someone shave against the grain it makes my toes curl lol. Lastly, do you always recommend using the allum block? Great video.
Hello, thanks for getting in touch. I bought a Merkur 34c, not long after I started along this journey and found that it was far too mild for me; it is also shorter and heavier than Mühle's R89. The Edwin Jagger DE 89 is essentially the same razor, so either of those would be my recommendation. I started off shaving in the same direction as I did with a cartridge razor; even for three passes. I have made a Sunday sit-down video about things that may be helpful when switching over. Have a look in the playlists. Just take it easy and use light pressure. Alum block is handy to have in the den. It does help if you find you're sore and have a little razor burn. As you get more experienced, you tend use it less and less. At least, I do. Some people always use it. I hope this helps a bit. Good luck and most of all I hope you enjoy whichever new razor you chose. All the best.
Friendship Shaving thank you for reply and advice. I took the plunge today and ordered the Muhle R106 razor, pack of mixed blades and TOBS sandalwood shave cream. Looking forward to getting rid of those costly cartridges. Will keep watching as I’ve subscribed and learning as I go. Will keep you informed lol.
Nicely done, sir. The R106 will be in your den forever, it's a lovely razor. Take it nice and slow, with exerting pressure, like you might with a cartridge. Cheers 👍
Hello Mark, I own the Twist version of the R89, which I believe is the heaviest of the lot, and for me, while smooth and easy to use, is not efficient enough. As a matter of fact I have an Edwin Jagger with the laser diamond pattern handle that to me, although lighter, feels slightly more efficient, and I use it more often than the Muhle when I look for a mild, casual shave. Is the difference in my head? I don't believe so. Having said that, I think both razors are classy and beautiful, I could not pick one over the other from an aesthetic point of view. Regards, Roberto
FM time to time there's a hack of discussion abt the R89 head being same as the DE89. Its not true, howevr during the heydeys of construction back in 1989, both Jagger + Muehle had talks abt mutual heads. Both factorties cfm they're 'similar', not identical n correctly the DE89 gives a more comfortable shave, too, besides its flawless chrome works.
No, that's slightly incorrect Achim, at least according to Edwin Jagger and Mûhle, who both confirmed that they shared costs for the initial production materials so, initially it certainly was the same head before both companies bought their own machinery etc. Edwin Jagger now use a brass post for the handle, rather than the original metal which would give the head more weight. Perhaps that's why it's seen by many as being a better shaver. Oh dammit - I'm going to have to get one!
As a matter of fact, I have two DE89, and the one with the Ivory octagonal handle shaves milder that the DE89 with the 3D handle. There could be minute differences between razors that in theory have the same head design. For example my Merkur 34C HD feels as mild as the Muhle R89, but I have a 38C with the long blue handle that shaves clearly more efficiently, despite the head nominally being the same...
Tks for clarification, Mark. Knew abt their sharing, but thought Jagger later went differently with the baseplate. Unexplainable I alw preferred the DE89 until this beloved fell into the sink, the head broke off... Hv replaced for $35 fm Amazon with short handle, now similar height as 34c. Shaves well.
I like to keep you on your toes Keith 😃 I hoped it would be seen as a good choice, there are a few to choose from. Value wise the wilkinson sword classic is brilliant but I thought it might be a bit aggressive for a raw recruit. I think the R89 is quite classy really.
@@FriendshipShaving you'll love it mark. Beautifully made, lovely weight. I've got the 3 inch handle with the c and d plates. Very efficient razor, even more so than the muhle imo. Keep up the good work. I love your channel
Wow. That's a recommendation and a half. Nice one. Thanks for the compliment too; it's really appreciated. It really helps me out knowing I'm still on the right track. Cheers.
Hola Henry, que pasa, hombre? They are quite similar razors. The King C Gillette has a heavy handle, which is noticeable compared to the Muhle or Edwin Jagger DE89. The Muhle/EJ are better balanced. I would go for one of those, whichever has a sale.
I love my Jagger DE89... Such a comfortable shave...hey I tried looking for that Wilkie TTO in Germany but couldn't find one...seems that DM have discontinued them.. But Omfg the aftershaves I found over there were just amazing...i think I bought about 15 different types lol.
I'm waiting to get more information from Wilkinson Sword; they said they would send me some information with a razor, so I hope they do. Man, you can't leave me hanging like that. What have you bought? 😃
@@FriendshipShaving Pitralon classic, Mennen Skinbracer, Gillette Coolwave, Proraso white, Williams Aqua velva, Ulric De Varens Star, Ulric De Varens Flash, Alt Innsbruck, Tabac Firepower (4 bottles because its that good), S. Oliver original.. So 13 bottles not 15 plus a few different soaps like Wilkinson sword in a tube, Spieck, Florena, Balea and German Palmolive...and a new synthetic brush by Balea too... Quite the haul 😁
Hi Mark, nice shaving, but, did you look at TheBodyShop after shave balm (razor relief) ingredients? Man, its full of allergenic stuff. Phenoxyethanol, all parabens "family", and so on. Are you still "alive"?
They sell this on eBay for £32.50. did you find you cut yourself a lot when you went over from a cartridge to a safety razor? and how do you avoid/minimise that please?
I did cut myself a bit when I changed over but my biggest issue was soreness; I found I was pressing too hard with the razor. Once you get used to light pressure take it slowly. I find certain blades cut me more than others. Derby blades usually nick me so I don't use them now. It is a learning process but those nicks will become very infrequent. perhaps you might try a different blade.
Unfortunately with razor blades, what suits one person doesn't necessarily suit another. I like a Voshkod or a Rappira platinum lux they are both coated and work well for me. I like those in a more aggressive razor but they might well suit you as a beginner. The coatings will help. Other brands I like are PolSilver; Personna honestly there are many. It might be a good idea to buy a sample pack of blades from eBay, then you can try a number of blades to see which you like best.
I prefer the R106 with the very slightly heavier handle; I find it makes a difference to the shave. To answer to your question, yes, I can get BBS with this razor. The R89 along with the Edwin Jagger DE89, which has the same head design are among the biggest selling razors in the last 30 years. That's what I think, I hope it's useful. Cheers.
Hi Antione. It could be a few things are causing your irritation - the most likely are: the razor blade might not suit you - I can't stand Astra blades, or perhaps going over the same area too many times. I know I used to that. It is a mild razor you have but it should still give a fairly good shave. Good luck mate.
r89 head + bulldog handle = a perfect daily driver every day of the week
That's a nice idea! I do like the idea of having a bulldog handle on either the R89 or the R41. Nice one 👍

You went crazy. I've not heard of some of this stuff. I wonder why we don't get these products in the UK. A very nice haul indeed.
Hi Mark, nice shaving, but, did you look at TheBodyShop after shave balm (razor relief) ingredients? Man, its full of allergenic stuff. Phenoxyethanol, all parabens "family", and so on. Are you still "alive"?
I think I'm still aliv (thump) eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. 🙂 I'm going to go and look now.
What about Wilkinson sword blades? or what you recommend for a begginer that I can order from Amazon please?
Unfortunately with razor blades, what suits one person doesn't necessarily suit another. I like a Voshkod or a Rappira platinum lux they are both coated and work well for me. I like those in a more aggressive razor but they might well suit you as a beginner. The coatings will help. Other brands I like are PolSilver; Personna honestly there are many. It might be a good idea to buy a sample pack of blades from eBay, then you can try a number of blades to see which you like best.
Wilkinson Sword can be a bit harsh.
What blades would you recommend for a DE begginer with sensitive skin?
Can you get a BBS with this?
I prefer the R106 with the very slightly heavier handle; I find it makes a difference to the shave. To answer to your question, yes, I can get BBS with this razor. The R89 along with the Edwin Jagger DE89, which has the same head design are among the biggest selling razors in the last 30 years. That's what I think, I hope it's useful. Cheers.
@@FriendshipShaving Thanks. I'm using a Wilkinson Classic (the metal one) with Astras and today i got a lot of irritation...thanks for your help
Hi Antione. It could be a few things are causing your irritation - the most likely are: the razor blade might not suit you - I can't stand Astra blades, or perhaps going over the same area too many times. I know I used to that. It is a mild razor you have but it should still give a fairly good shave. Good luck mate.
@@FriendshipShaving Damn i just bought 50...might get a sample pack
R.I.P. you are maybe dead today....
No, I just checked. I'm alive ☺
