  • Review of the Muhle R89 - an entry level 'old school' safety razor with single razor blades.
'Closed comb' means no notches along the edge - so less blade exposed - makes it a little safer than open comb.
Great shave - super close - but you'll need to change the blades more regularly and will need to factor in an extra minute or two to take it just that little bit slower to avoid any nicks.

Are u still active? A razor worth trying is the single bladed Gillette Guard razor made in India, available here in the UK via eBay, it’s a cartridge razor, cheap but gives a awesome shave👌excellent for travel use.
    Cheers🍻🥃

Thanks for the notice upload message you sent me and a good review on this safety razor. I think once you master shaving with a single bladed double edge razor it really doesn't take any more time than shaving with a cartridge razor and if you are wanting to try a vintage Gillette safety razor then I would buy a Gillette Fatboy Adjustable or a Gillette Rocket HD both are great razors.

Hi mate, have you tried the Wilkinson Sword Razor blades in that Razor 🪒. Interesting to see what you think. Just one other suggestion. Hace you tried Palmolive Cream shaving cream. Lathers up good. You should try that.🙏

@@sharpshaves How do I shave with a dove soap bar? I first used the dove shea butter bar.

cut the whole bar. put the cut-up bar in a van der Haggen shave mug. add water to the mug with the soap inside the mug. make sure to cover the soap with water completely.
      microwave 30 sec
      at a time one minute.
don't let the soap bubble out of the mug?
stop it cool for a sec or two? do it again?
it will congeal. leave in a sunny spot the water will be gone in a week or so?
the soap hardened in place in the mug.
don't get the soap or mug to hot a little at a time easy does it

I think you showed exactly why people use the cartridges. EASE OF USE
Also you can not throw the metal blades in the recyling because they are considered a Sharps , like syringes, they are also considered a potential bio hazard with blood and transmitting of disease / infection.
I notice there are still a couple of subscriptions you have not tested, including all the Gillettes and the Wilkinson Swords and the King Of Shaves yo name a few.

Thanks Geek of Shaves for the thoughts on other razors to put through their paces. I'll look them up and add them to the list. For recycling, I think it is OK if you save them up in a metal tin and then take to the tip and put in the metal recycling. Better than all the plastic anyway. Adds around 2 minutes to my shave. I'm thinking it has to be worth it.

Easy to use, certainly; more of a chore, whereas using a safety razor is a joy. And cartridge razors use a ‘tug and pull’ approach that can cause painful razor bumps / ingrown hairs and irritation. They also make use of plastic, so are not good for the environment. Finally, cartridge blades are very expensive, costing around £2 to £3 a per blade, while safety razor blades are very cheap. You can buy 100 for about £10.

@Pete Kadenz yep razor blades for DE are very cheap. Yes DE shaving is made into an event for sure by many, and this is helped a lot by wonderful shave preps. Cartridges do also have plastic for sure, although I recon it won't be long before bambo or other degradable substrates will be used as they do in some of the handles on disposables now. Most important of all is to find a shave that suits you and your needs at that time. Sometimes speed and convenience is needed and sometimes pampering and time is better to help relax. Thanks for the reply as it is always interesting to hear people views

Although I started out looking for the best subscription razor I am already getting drawn to buy more safety razors. Have been looking for a vintage Gillette.

@@sharpshaves they are very alluring. Subscriptions are dead, I have been following them since they kicked off with DSC in the USA, I did videos on why they won't work in the UK and they have held true, hence most are now fighting for shop shelf space, and all have lost millions £
