+Victor Lee I agree. I have some more in-depth knob-tweaking demos (tape and analog modes) I will upload separately because if I included that here the video would have been close to 30 minutes :)
+Nathan Shafer (EchoEchoGuy) This out of box demo was enough to convince me to get the Nemesis, but I will definitely be looking at more of your reviews. I'm pretty new to RUclips and making music, so thanks for the valuable service Tubers like yourself have provided.
I was watching this video while at work making some cables not really looking at the screen until I thought oooohhhh that sounds really good and when I looked up it was the nemesis EVERY time. Holy moly. I have no doubt what my next delay will be.
This is an "Out of the Box" demo with a quick run-through of each mode. There are many more features/parameters that can be tweaked which I will cover in other videos. For example, on the DD500 any patch can be edited to pan left and right (when running in stereo), which the Nemesis does by default as you can hear in this video.
+Nathan Shafer (EchoEchoGuy) Which one do you prefer? Also, does the dd500 come with feedback loop functionality that lets you put other pedals in the repeats?
They are both good but I must say I like the Nemesis a bit better. I don't have the DD500 at the moment but I doesn't have an effects loop send/return.
I have a few source audio pedas and after this inclined to buy the Nemesis. Quite different than other delay pedals on the market. Great quality in sound.,Thanks for the demo.
+GREG C Glad it was helpful for you. You will love it! I have some other knob-tweaking comparison videos on these two I will upload as soon as i get the editing done.
Nathan Shafer I don't but now I'm very interested in the Nemesis. I'm looking for a good delay for some time and the best I've heard was the Strymon Timeline. The Nemesis is seriously on my attention from now on ;) Cheers!
I have DD500. Playing acoustic guitar, I am ok with it. It does not matter if you are using Nemesis or DD500, important is, if you can play something nice
I got the Nemesis a month's ago and couldn't be more pleased with the tones I get from it. I used to have a DD 20 so I am familiar with boss delays and I think the Nemesis blows it away in terms of sound quality. I am getting sounds I didn't know existed and with the app and the desktop editor the possibilities are endless.
Nathan Shafer Yea it's great. If you just take a little time and use the editor you can dial in any sound you can think of. And with the firmware updates I don't see any need for a new delay for years to come. I am glad to hear you still love it after a year as sometimes pedal can become stale after a while but it looks as if the Nemesis keeps going strong.
Wow, just when I thought I had it all figured out, here comes the Nemesis. T Let's not forget how great a pedal the Neunaber Stereo Wet is, either. Thanks for these reviews.
+Guitar Anthony You will love it. I didn't tweak many knobs in this demo and that is where it really shines. I have recorded some more in-depth comparisons of the Analog and Tape Modes that I will upload soon.
+Nathan Shafer (EchoEchoGuy) I own all the other Source Audio gear & find it all very well made & great sounding. Didn't think there'd be a contender for my TC Alter Ego X4 but I guess we'll find out!
The Nemesis definitely sounds more immediately impressive, but the Boss is so tweakable, and has a load of features I prefer over the nemesis (editing all on the pedal with no need for an app, being able to run two delay patches simultaneously). I think I'm going to stick with my plan to grab the Boss; I'll sacrifice having a dirty tape and a more strymon-y shimmer for the extra features and the synthy SFX mode, I think
Thank you! I am planning to play my Selmer SA80 II baritone saxophone through digital sound processing, and the first one would be a delay unit. Seems to me the Nemesis does a little coloring as the DD-500 keeps the sound more natural. Could be the influence of 24 @ 44(?) kHz vs 32 bit @ 96 kHz. Anyway, I am looking for the most natural sound, but I guess I will just test the both of them.
How does the nemesis handle tape delay, and putting overdrive in front of it? Personally, i've gone through like 4 delay pedals in the last few years and need a multi-delay that actually does what I need. I had an RE-20 which did the exact tape delay I wanted but was too noisy, my dl-4 broke, and my dd-7 didn't have tap tempo. I have a Delaylab currently, and don't care for the way it sounds with overdrive in front of it. I was looking at the Timeline until I found out it only has 1 of the tape modes from the el Capistan on it. Now the nemesis and dd-500 have my interest. I was leaning towards the DD-500 until I saw this video.
The stereo image on these two are totally different. It sounds like the Nemesis is all ping-pong all the time, and the DD500 is not... is this a setting that didn't get matched? Really I'm asking, can ping pong be turned off for the Nemesis and can it be turned on for the DD500?
Having watched the whole thing now, looks like the DD500 went stereo for Tera and Pattern modes... wondering if these are the only two modes with this option?
+Tony Peterson The Nemesis automatically detects stereo output and generates a ping pong delay for any of the delay machines. It's possible to override this and choose a custom routing mode using the Neuro App or MIDI. The DD500 can be set up to do Ping Pong delays by going in a tweaking the routing of an individual patch. So both can do a ping pong but the Nemesis does it "out of the box".
Never tried the Nemesis, I use to own the Boss DD 500 and sent it back after a month. Don’t know what it was exactly but I just never could really get into it. The tones sounded a bit piercing to my ears. Not sure about the Nemesis but considering giving it a try. I like the Concept of both pedals but the DD500 just didn’t do it for me.
The stereo panning is very different by the two. In some settings I can not hea the DD-500 stereo effect. I own the DD-500 and I am not able to reproduce stereo panning on the DIGITAL and ANALOG settings. Don't know why.
DD-500 is not true stereo unfortunately... you can do a ping pong type effect where the note bounces from left to right... but that's about it... you don't get the depth or lushness of true stereo
I discovered that the stereo effect can be programmed in depth. One can choose the frequency of the panning, as well the quantity of the panned signals.
I think yes, you can assume that. Factory presets aren't so beautifully set to stereo but one can adjust every single parameter, even setting the stereo panning in a fraction of the delay time, I mean in quarter, eighths, dotted notes and so on, but you have to spend a little time to understand the way to do that.
+Joel Vaught Both pedals were recorded in stereo. This demo is how it sounds going through the default modes. A DD500 patch can be edited to pan the repeats left and right if desired or have the dry signal go to one channel and the repeats go to another channel. Out of the box the Nemesis pans left and right with its repeats. The DD500 Pattern mode at 08:38 shows what it sounds like with the repeats panned.
All modes sound better to me on the Nemesis... the only reason I still use the DD-500 is to use the Tera echo with HOLD mode... but ither than that... the Nemesis is my favorite delay in the price rwnge by far
polishbroadcast I know, it's awesome... but have you heard the effect the tera echo creates when you mute the strings? Try that and then hold.... and tell me how to recreate that... I can come close with the nemesis, or a combination of the Afterneath and the nemesis... I've thought of getting the Tera Echo pedal and use the hold mode on the Nemesis... but I would still need to engage another delay engine so I wouldn't know how it will sound... but oh man... the bubbly, organic sound it creates is just perfect for what I do... but right now I just use too many delays... I have both l but my current delay setup include the supa puss, obscura, tc triple and the Nemesis... I took out the DD-500... it's overkill as it is.... just got the tap tempo button from source audio to use it as the self oscillation ramp up on the nemesis... its pretty cool... running the tc triple with an expression pedal into de nemesis with the tap button I can create pretty crazy stuff... The Boss is just boring... way too boring for me... even though it sounds pretty good
I am a devout Source Audio user and I have loved every pedal that has been released...however I have met with Jessie Regimante and other senior programmers as well as talented artists at NAMM16 and found this pedal to be lacking in just a few areas (not just my own conclusion). Overall it sounds amazing and even holds true to the source audio mantra of out of this world effects and "tweak-ability". But this installment of time based effects is lacking. 1.) There is NO dual option (running two separate delay engines simultaneously) the pattern effect on the Nemesis can mimic the effect but ultimately it lacks in this area as only one delay engine can be activated at one time. 2.) I can hear the slightest alteration in signal when putting other effects in the chain (think EHX Memory Boy Deluxe the high pitch noise made with each note) even the artist agreed when striking single notes the noise was ever present although subtle even with no other pedal activated in the chain and on its own the noise was present although it had decreased in intensity. 3.) Even with the Mod and Rate knobs down when listening it almost sounded as if there was some amount of modulation present but it was inconsistent not happening every time the pedal was turned on. 4.) Also the construction "feels" underwhelming even flimsy and can be a turn off to hard stompers and passionate players. As they showcased the Nemesis at NAMM16 it was a beautiful sound, as beautiful as the artist played, but did not compare to its competition at this time. As the description says this is based off of "default modes". This is a first step in Delay effects from source audio and I eagerly await future modifications to this pedal. With as much as its completion can be altered and tweaked I have found sounds just as beautiful if not more but as a devout user I will continue to wait on Source Audio for its next installment.
+William Mckinnis "This is a first step in Delay effects from source audio and I eagerly await future modifications to this pedal. " this is not their first step in delay and unlike the dd500 this already has firmware updates, I have yet to hear any artifacts like you mention. So your only experience with it was namm?
I apologize if I am wrong but I am not aware of any other (time based) delay pedal source audio had released prior to the nemesis. I did spend a good amount of time with the nemesis after namm due to my dedication to SA and the geniuses that continue to blow my mind with their creations and still found it lacking...again to each his own ear...i mean no offense as I love SA.
I was wrong about them having a previous delay pedal, I was thinking Reverb, I the iphone/ipad interface and timing issues ultimately made me sell it, I do miss the Helix engine but there was also more in it than I would use, took the chance that the El Capistan was bright enough for my tastes and I love the Strymon
+Eric sin sinner understood I was aware of their reverb...I also did not keep the nemesis...thank you for the amazing demo as my second choice (dd500) was based off this demo as have been many other effect decisions have been influenced by your demos
Great pedal but the iPhone interface and strange behaviors turning on and off made me sell and buy an El Capistan, best delay for basic tape sounds with the added complexity and I thought it would be dark sounding I was wrong
I was going to say that the Nemesis probably need to be updated to the latest software if you had glitches. You can't go wrong with the El Cap though! I have it and love it.
Had the Nemesis for 1 month, returned it and changed it for the DD-500. In my opinion the BOSS has a much firmer and sharper attack, is way more dynamic. It's like it really blends the analog path and the effect (delay) only enhances it in a digital-analog old-school manner. Basically any basic tone you dial on the DD-500 is gonna be heard in the mix, which is not always the case with Nemesis. It has the feel of any traditional sturdy BOSS pedal like the DD-7. Very reliable hi tech stuff. The Nemesis is maybe more pleasant at first, shiny, more "flarey" but i feel the signal is "trapped" inside his DSP and therefore it loses it's dynamic range, the notes are "wobbly", feels it's not you playing, especially when hitting the strings hard. For live use - definitely Boss DD-500 For studio - Nemesis and DD-500
This is the EXACT reason I won’t get a high end, do it all reverb box. When you hear these things on their own, it’s like a revelation. Pristine, warm, deep sounds than live somewhere behind the speaker. Then you kick it on for a show and that’s all gone. Your 3Dness dies in a sea of hi hats, kick drums and vocals. So now there’s this huge box sitting on your board, the little subtleties between your patches don’t translate on any level and that real estate goes to waste....fuuuuuck that. That’s why I use the supernatural. Don’t need midi for verb, small footprint and if my sound doesn’t translate that night, no biggie.
To me it's the opposite. The Boss gets in the way and burries your notes. The Nemesis feels and sounds more organic. But for live use the Boss is way better because of the switching of presets by foot (if you don't use a Midi controller). So both are good but both have drawbacks. But side by side purelu based on sound quality, the Nemesis wins for me (yes, I own the Nemesis and the Strymon Timeline, and have tried the boss)
colaboytje I really think they both suck! The Nemesis digitizes the whole signal which is a no go for me. The DD-500 is analog dry through, but the delay sounds brittle and bright.
How's Nemesis working in live environment? My sound personally dep'ends solely on delays and i have to be able to switch between 5-6 exact delay tempos. Also, can the nemesis be fine controlled via the app as it does not have a screen? Tnx ;)
With the Nemesis, it would very helpful to use a Midi aux pedal to cycle through presets. You can use the Neuro Hub from Source Audio www.sourceaudio.net/ or a controller from Disaster Area Designs www.disasterareaamps.com/
Nemesis all the way Maybe the Boss is superior technology And surely Strymon But fuck 'em they don't deserve the price I really love Source Audio, it sounds great, and very intuitive, really gtr oriented Still waiting for my Nemesis and Ventris May I have a sponsorship? 😉
Have owned both and although both have great tones and features the dd500 is HEAPS better. The nemesis is really hard to dial in, modulation still comes through when on zero and even through the fx loop of your amp the repeats bleed in to your dry signal making everything sound a bit messy. Nice sounding pedal when its played quietly and clean but if your after a delay that sits in the mix well and copes with other fuzzy pedal friends then dd500 or strymon all day..
Nemesis sounds beautiful here!
+Victor Lee I agree. I have some more in-depth knob-tweaking demos (tape and analog modes) I will upload separately because if I included that here the video would have been close to 30 minutes :)
+Nathan Shafer (EchoEchoGuy) nice! I think I'm going to get myself one of those by summer. So nemesis might be the one we can make a collab demo on!
Victor Lee That would be awesome man!

+Ronnie Bracke Yes, the quality in sound is top-notch! Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the video, I found it very helpful. My nemesis is ordered!
+GREG C Glad it was helpful for you. You will love it! I have some other knob-tweaking comparison videos on these two I will upload as soon as i get the editing done.
Great Demo Nathan !
Thanks for the comment!
Thanks Nathan. Very helpful demo.
Glad it was helpful for you!
Great job on this comparison video. It's really helpful.
+Steven Yost Thanks Steven! Glad it was helpful.
Wow, the Nemesis really surprised me, it sounds fantastic! Nice comparison buddy ;) Cheers
+Wagner Rosa Thanks Wagner!
+Wagner Rosa Do you have any Source Audio gear? This is my first pedal from them.
Nathan Shafer I don't but now I'm very interested in the Nemesis. I'm looking for a good delay for some time and the best I've heard was the Strymon Timeline. The Nemesis is seriously on my attention from now on ;) Cheers!
I love mine now! great pair with the Ventris!
Wow I was blown away about how much the nemesis has a "high fi" sound. Amazing !
Thanks for the comment!
Sound wise they both do a pretty good job, but i like that boss has preset switching and deep editing right on the pedal.
Thanks for the comment!
I have DD500. Playing acoustic guitar, I am ok with it. It does not matter if you are using Nemesis or DD500, important is, if you can play something nice
Radovan Uhler indeed
This is true.

+Otsu's Pyre That's true. The Neunaber Stereo Wet sounds beautiful.
Nemesis.. Such a good alternative to eventide und strymon :) too.
I agree! Thanks for the comment.
Exactly
Great little comparison!
+Aiden Bradley Thanks Aiden! Have you seen the Analog knob-tweaking comparison? ruclips.net/video/R4LpakRp56Y/видео.html
The Nemesis doesn't have a screen. That's a massive plus for me. I have one coming in about a week, very excited
Let me know what you think about it when it comes in!
Perfect timing as I'm just about to snag myself a Nemesis.
+Guitar Anthony Do you have their Neuro Hub?
Yup. Have it for Android. Haven't had a chance to delve too deep yet. Too many guitar things! :)
Boss mono mode? and lo E.Level?
Been waiting for the Nemesis since hearing the first demo in Namm 15, it was worth the wait awesome pedal.
+IANSPA Yes, it's a great pedal. Do you have one?
Yes, also have the Gemini chorus another fantastic sounding pedal, beautiful tones together with Nemesis.
Can't really go wrong these days bht I'm glad I bought the Nemesis.
+Xander Rose the Nemesis is so good
The Nemesis definitely sounds more immediately impressive, but the Boss is so tweakable, and has a load of features I prefer over the nemesis (editing all on the pedal with no need for an app, being able to run two delay patches simultaneously). I think I'm going to stick with my plan to grab the Boss; I'll sacrifice having a dirty tape and a more strymon-y shimmer for the extra features and the synthy SFX mode, I think
Just curious, did you end up getting the Nemesis or DD500?
Great video!
+Laura Shafer Thank you !
Hey ! Awesome review! How is nemesis bypass? True,Buffered? Is there an option for trails?
Thanks! You can actually configure it for true bypass or buffered with trails!
Thanks for your time , i'm going for the nemesis for sure :)
I think you will like it!
:)
CN you post the parameters for the first sound in this vid coming from the nemesis? It's epic and I want to play around with it :)
Should be something like: Engine: Shifter, Feedback 30%, Mod 0%, Rate 0%, Mix 60%, and Intensity 100%(Octave up)
Anyway, I am looking for the most natural sound, but I guess I will just test the both of them.
thx for shared
Thanks for stopping by this video and my channel.
How does the nemesis handle tape delay, and putting overdrive in front of it? I was leaning towards the DD-500 until I saw this video.
dd-7 has tap tempo...
The Nemesis handles overdrive very well.
Nemesis is lush. The Boss always sounds like a digital delay from the 80’s. Liked the Boss reverse though.
Nice
The stereo image on these two are totally different. It sounds like the Nemesis is all ping-pong all the time, and the DD500 is not... is this a setting that didn't get matched? Really I'm asking, can ping pong be turned off for the Nemesis and can it be turned on for the DD500?

+Tony Peterson The Nemesis automatically detects stereo output and generates a ping pong delay for any of the delay machines. It's possible to override this and choose a custom routing mode using the Neuro App or MIDI. The DD500 can be set up to do Ping Pong delays by going in a tweaking the routing of an individual patch. So both can do a ping pong but the Nemesis does it "out of the box".

I personally liked the modes offered by the DD500 but the tones of the Nemesis are more pleasing to my ears.
Congratulations Nathan, the sound of Nemesis is amazing, I have a Strymon timeline, I'm thinking of replacing Nemesis, is that a good idea?
The helix mode on te Nemesis sounds more like a Shimmer than the Shifter mode IMO.
very nice. how can i change the four saved presets? i mean, in live performance?
You can hook up a 2 button Midi Aux controller to cycle up/down through the presets.
The stereo panning is very different by the two. In some settings I can not hea the DD-500 stereo effect. I own the DD-500 and I am not able to reproduce stereo panning on the DIGITAL and ANALOG settings. Don't know why.

Luis Sutil I don't understand, exactly is true stereo from a delay?
I discovered that the stereo effect can be programmed in depth. One can choose the frequency of the panning, as well the quantity of the panned signals.
sdrghr That sounds pretty cool. So then it's safe to assume that the DD500 is after all "true" stereo, right? :)

I like the Nemesis a tad better personally :)
Nemesis it is.
It's a great delay! I think you will like it :)
dd500 seems to be more tweakable with less effort, great demo's and hopefully will help me decide.
Hope this helps you make a decision!
Does the DD-500 not run stereo that well or were you not running it in stereo?
+Joel Vaught Both pedals were recorded in stereo. This demo is how it sounds going through the default modes. A DD500 patch can be edited to pan the repeats left and right if desired or have the dry signal go to one channel and the repeats go to another channel. Out of the box the Nemesis pans left and right with its repeats. The DD500 Pattern mode at 08:38 shows what it sounds like with the repeats panned.
I returned my dd500 after about a month of owning it. Sounded way too digital to me.
Did you pick up a Nemesis?
I did!
Do you like it?
Boss is on mono mode?
All modes sound better to me on the Nemesis... the only reason I still use the DD-500 is to use the Tera echo with HOLD mode... but ither than that... the Nemesis is my favorite delay in the price rwnge by far
FWIW the Nemesis has a hold mode if you hold down the tap button.
polishbroadcast I know, it's awesome... but have you heard the effect the tera echo creates when you mute the strings? Try that and then hold.... and tell me how to recreate that... in terms of sound its Nemesis, but in terms of functionality Nemesis is no comparison for DD500...

I have it and love it.
i think dd500 adding a lot high ends.i like it.i like both
You're doing a sound comparison of two delay pedals, through a Neunaber reverb pedal ... ... ... ??! Are you serious ... ... ... ??!
Like the nemesis is in constant ping pong mode
Can't stand it

Very reliable hi tech stuff.
The Nemesis is maybe more pleasant at first, shiny, more "flarey" but i feel the signal is "trapped" inside his DSP and therefore it loses it's dynamic range, the notes are "wobbly", feels it's not you playing, especially when hitting the strings hard.
For live use - definitely Boss DD-500
For studio - Nemesis and DD-500
HrVoje Niebed very helpful
Thanks. I have been pondering whether to buy the nemesis or the dd500 for live/ or the L6 DL4
The DD-500 is analog dry through, but the delay sounds brittle and bright.
nemesis.... 👍
Nemesis!!!
Nemesis all the way
Maybe the Boss is superior technology
And surely Strymon
But fuck 'em they don't deserve the price
I really love Source Audio, it sounds great, and very intuitive, really gtr oriented
Still waiting for my Nemesis and Ventris
May I have a sponsorship? 😉
Nemesis sounds better in stereo.
Nemesis repeats are louder lol invalid comparison
Well I just bought the Nemesis for $230.00.
I think you will love it!
Damn, it's always ping pong on the Nemesis? what a fucking nightmare. I watched just half of the video just because it drove me nuts lol
You can actually dial down the Ping Pong delay by using the Neuro mobile app.
To me the DD500 sounds more 'studio' and the Nemesis sounds more 'radio'. The DD500 sounds cleaner but the Nemesis sounds more song ready.
