Great video! I've been an eye doc for 35 years, and I have preached target focus shooting for a long time. No matter your age, the eyes' depth of focus, and depth of field, will not allow two things separated by a large distance to be in focus simultaneously. Remain target focused and you can still get all the information you need from the irons, even though they will be slightly blurred.

Been front sight focused for 35+ years. Last year switched to target focus to start USPSA. Yes, it really works. It’s been one of the best changes I’ve made.
Now working hard to have the proper confirmation (shoot sooner), it’s coming along.

Target focus is great for old guy's because you don't need special glasses to see the sight. Thanks Ben, I have been going to the range for over 55 years and it's always good to learn something new.

I went from bulls eye shooting competitions to competing in dynamic shooting 6 years ago and only recently completely unlearned all that bullseye fudd crap (Not crap in itself, but when bullseye fudds say it's necessary for dynamic shooting. They are easy to spot over here in Europe, their favorite meaningless commonplace is "Speed comes [automatically] once the precision is there.") I am presbyopic and the switch to target focus in dynamic shooting has improved my shooting per se slightly and certainly not impeded accuracy. I can make difficult shots just fine without glasses and have way better situational awareness not being artificially turned short-sighted by shooting glasses that are like reading glasses with their focus on the iron sights. Now, if I have to shoot bulls eye for qualifications etc. it's still easier hitting 10s with the glasses, but in dynamic an Alpha is an Alpha, there's no inner Alpha.
Also, target focus saves me a lot of money on RDs, because I can still play in iron sights divisions at advanced middle age.
Thx, Mr. Stoeger, for all your great material. I already bought several of your books and greatly profited.

It’s my understanding that actual real life shootings the majority report total focus on the target. After decades of old school sight focus(Retired LEO) gonna try this.

It really works but takes a little time to be confident enough so as to not switch back and forth between target focus and sight focus!

Your videos combined with your book have helped me out so much. I've only been to the range twice but because of my practice with dry firing I have been able to shoot groups as good as my friend who has been shooting for years.
I am still working on speed, but I just wanted to say thank you for everything you put out to help shooters.

So glad you spoke to this. I have been doing this for a while simply because it just made sense. In a "real" scenario i didnt think i would ever front sight focus so i have been doing only target focused dry fire /live fire. I am confident this will make shooting a dot much easier also

For competition shooting, wouldn't you want a little broader back sight? So, on those shots where you need a little higher level confirmation, it's still easier to get the front in the middle of the back sight, not like bullseye shooting.

Would a non fiber optic front sight be better for target focused shooting? I recently replaced the white painted front sight on my gun to a green fiber optic but I wonder now if that was a mistake.

    • @lon242

No, not needed, you can just dull the fiber with black sharpie (black out the bottom half of the circle, and/or black out the top of the fiber optic rod so it collects less light)

I think that some kind of enhanced front sight makes its easier to referens when target focused. Stock sight seems to look all black for me
