    The grayscale method has been a life saver for me because I struggle with color matching and finding the right shades. But since I color everything in gray, then use gradient maps and the adjustment settings after, my shading is much more accurate and realistic because I can focus on values instead of colors.

      I'm such a fool for color. I don't know why, but without color picking I somehow never hit the right one. They're always off.
      I think I'll try out the painting over grayscale method. This way I only have to choose some colors and the program does the rest. I guess it get's problematic in scenarios with exaggerated lighting and contrast, because you have basically no real hue shift, but I'm far from that anyway.

    • @kommandokeks

      I think I'll learn this whole grayscale thing again. My art LACKS of contrast and I want to leave semirealism so hard, but no matter what...it all looks flat. And the colors look off too. I can counter some of it by adjusting the colors on my smartphone the way I see them on my graphics tablet...but I feel like I can do better.

    Doing grayscale, personally, helps in using value first.
    I did color only at first, but the colors end up looking too jarring since I don't have value references/underpainting.
    Plus, it greatly helps me in painting skin since there's a technique for this method: grisaille.

  • @duberdurm
    @duberdurm 3 года назад +9

    I find starting with grayscale gives more control, especially if you're not good with choosing colors. Starting with grayscale first is a hack for making sure your color values are correct because if your values look right in grayscale, your colors are guaranteed to have the right values when you apply them. Along with flipping periodically, if I start with color, I periodically turn the piece to grayscale to make sure the values read correctly. Honestly, it's best to keep an open mind, because one way isn't better than the other all the time. Sometimes if I start a piece in color, then turn it to grayscale when it's almost done, applying colors with the filters gives me a better result.

    When I saw this drawing on your Instagram yesterday I was so shocked because this drawing is just so beautiful (in a different way than usual) I was really looking at it for a couple minutes and then saw that you first started out with grayscale. And it was kind of visible that something was different about this drawing than usual. As you said, it does have deeper colors and it also shows that you took more time to work on this piece, so I hope you don’t think that you have wasted your time on this one. 😄 As someone who usually takes at least 10 hours to complete a simple portrait and most of the time struggling to find the right colors, I think this method will speed up my workflow personally and I’m excited to try this out myself. So thank you very much for this amazing video it was her helpful and it would be awesome to see you try out some other methods too. 😄☺️

    I personally only use this method when I don't know what colors I want yet, but know how I want the composition to look. Once I get a light layer of color placed in, I'll then merge and continue painting. So I tend to apply this really early in my paintings, if at all. Most helpful for landscapes.

    You should try gradient maps for coloring grayscale images.
    What I usually do is I put a gradient map on for every different material, so in the end I have one for skin, one for hair, one for white cloth, one for purple cloth etc., that way if you don't like one color you can just afterwards go in and change that one specific color without altering the rest of the image. I also prefer gradient maps over blend modes because you can assign a specific color to a specific value so it gives it a less artificial feel.
