Sad thing is this has been like this for decades. Each mayor or government does nothing about this problem. Quick band aid and that all. Now all over the province even working class is like this soon enough.

You're welcome Tracey! Glad you enjoyed it. For the most part the people in that area keep to themselves, but there were a couple shootings in the area that day. I'm working on that walking video, will post that at a later date.
Watching your video's hoping to catch a sight of my daughter. Her name is Kate. Miss her so much. Life is made of choices, and you only have yourself to blame if you end up on E. Hastings.
Ruth O this is her daughter im sure shes tried to help but when a family member makes choices like the stuff that will land you here theres Uasually nothing you can do
I have to admit I ended up here because one song from "28 days later" was named East Hastings and some guy mentioned the hopelessness of the people you find there. I can see what he was talking about.
Yeah it's An area where people have a lot of "demons", so to speak. But you have to have hope if you be want to clean up and get out of that situation.
this breaks my heart to see this city in this shape, i was raised in van, went to school in van, there had always been homeless in this area , but nothing like this, i have lived in australia for almost 30yrs now, i almost cant believe what i have just seen, what the hell happened, no hope, no future, shame on trudeau, his father was prime minister when i was growing up ,,
Yes things seem to be deteriorating in that area. When I lived in Vancouver I didn't spend much time out that way, but I don't recall it being like this :(
Donny Genaille about 25-30 years ago.. CBC did an actual LIVE broadcast that was an hour long on Welfare Wednesday on East Hastings. Does anyone remember that? Lo and behold.. who do we see sitting at the bar at the Astoria? My aunt! I’ll never forget that moment! 😢
Vancouver is still amazing lol. This guy walks down one street where the homeless all mainly reside and you think that's Vancouver? This guy is a Vancouver hater from what I see. Not only that you can walk down hasting at night as this guy did (probably with a GoPro on his chest) and have NO problems with people. Get real.
i love Vancouver. lived here my whole life and i was born only a few cities away, these people are terribly sad people with terribly sad stories.. i always thought it was entertaining to drive down hastings and seeing the wackos.. like watching a kid hurt themselves.. BUT! i wouldn't ever want to live anywhere else! anything you could possibly do or need is only a few blocks away or if you're looking for a more nature-esk adventure, its only a little drive away from countless parks, hikes, scenic forest walks, mountains, BEACHES, a nude beach!! and suspension bridges.. I love the Fraser Valley.. you can choose to be a bum on the street or you can get rich or famous out of Vancouver. It's all up to you!
U know it's sad and true at the same time I've walked these streets east west and main drive thru em every time I go to van I'm like let's go I need a reminder and how greatful I am to be clean and I can tell others what I seen on those streets and what wrong and poor choices in life can lead to and yes the government just sets everyone up for failure when it comes to people who make wrong life choices letting them die instead of helping them
I'm from Turkey and i've came across some people on the internet that talked about this place, how desperate it was and by many comments i imagined something much, much worse, a much more desolate and vigilent area. Comparing this to where i live i wouldnt say this is too bad. Granted there'a a lotta drug problems there but we have enough of our own too. Honestly these people are harmless, you can clearly tell that if you mind your business so will they. A bit like a pair of ghosts.
Living in the suburbs whenever I drove this area I made sure my windows were half way up. Life changed and I found myself living in the core of this neighborhood. I lived here 18 months. I discovered the people were pure, real. Even in obvious despair the people of the Vancouver East Side were more friendly then my neighbors since I returned to suburbia. The neighborhood is full of crime drugs pain and real people. Most deeply hurting but that's a big part of what makes them so real. P*E*A*C*E
Thanks for sharing that! As that community is struggling, it's not hard to understand that they would help one another in times of need. And I totally understand what you mean about people in suburbia lol
I go down to this area about 3-4 times a week to try and help out the homeless in any ways I can, even if it means bringing some new socks or cooking a food at home and delivering it to them. This area might look scary to some people and times can get heated because this is the streets but, if you understood where most of these people are coming from, its truly sad and painful. Also, if you're not from this hood and you're walking around taking TikToks and Lives here you need to ask for permission from the people unless you KNOW the people. People in this area are sick and tired of people doing this shit and believe me, there are some people who won't have it so you do this at your own risk.
We don't have any drug addiction here in Canada any more.............we only have 'substance abuse'. No prostitutes either, only 'sex trade workers'. What a great country.

Didn't even have shoes on. My job was only temporary so I got myself home and never forgotten my experiences down there. I did all of it. Stanley Park The old world's fair ground. Took Vancouver off will work there list. Went to Edmonton and Calgary instead. They haven't anything remotely close to that! A few pockets of abject poverty but still much better than East Hastings. Gun fire one night just a block away from. Gas Town I could hear it from my hotel room. Wow! Like 2 or 3 am. Confirmed on the morning news. I wasn't sure at the time. Could have been firecrackers or something else. But I heard it. Never went back. I also recall the 24 hour bars. What a mess they were. People passed out sitting snd leaning against the wall next to the sidewalk. Some just sprawled out sleeping. No cover of any kind. That is one tough neighborhood. Never been back. NO matter how much they are paying.

I have always been dreaming to go n live in canada. But these scenes are horrific, unbeliveable. First time, in 56 years of my life time, I think, I won't like to migrate to canada. Poor are the poor, no matter where do they live. I used to think that canada is a heaven (as portrayed by media) but now, this sort of real time youtubers has shown us the real side of the picture. Canada is a country found/exist on the surface of earth. Poor is, was n would always be poor. My lovely Pakistan is far far far better than all this. I live in a very good house like a villa in pakistan but canada can offer me only slums like this only. Long live beautiful PAKISTAN.

Ah thanks, I haven't gone back to check the video but you could totally be right. I've mislabeled directions and sometimes even streets before lol. Thanks for the info :)
Good question! Full disclosure - I'm not an expert on this, but it's a long story that goes way back... Vancouver has a relatively warm climate for Canada, and is a port city with drugs coming through... This draws troubled people to the area. That's part of it. How people get to that point, I couldn't really tell you. A significant number of these individuals are first nations. The colonisation of America, the residential school system... long story there. There's also the Vancouver problem of high housing prices relative to wages, which means you're going to have a hard time with low income. The solution has to be multifaceted.
Looks pretty civilized, all things considered. This is a mental health issue. Canada should change it's laws on how it defines someone as being a threat to them self or a threat to others; in order to receive incarcerated treatment. Currently it functions as a bureaucratic economy of poverty and welfare that costs tax payers millions of dollars per year.
Hi Scottie, yes lots of people we see in this video are likely dealing with mental health issues. There's not a whole lot of resources for them currently, especially since info of the hospitals dealing with MH issues closed down years ago...
@@MyWalkAround Yes, the problem with mental illness in Canada is how the law interprets; a threat to oneself and/or others. Not to mention the issue of privacy when family members want to help. I know this all too well because I have a schizophrenic brother who lived on the streets for 30yrs. My family and I have tried desperately to help him get medical treatment and proper housing. He stayed often with my wife and I but he always disappeared; often for months at a time. People who are mentally ill refuse treatment but I would argue they should be forced to be treated once they are convicted of a crime.
with housing prices sky rocked rent so dam expensive an a minimum wage that doesn't match the situation just gonna get worse with more homeless people sad to bc this way after all these years cant fix the problem

Sad thing is this has been like this for decades. Each mayor or government does nothing about this problem. Quick band aid and that all. Now all over the province even working class is like this soon enough.
@Travis L Not as much as the Canadian prime minister has wasted through a plandemic.
There is an street like that in every city in my country.
I saw my old butcher shop! I loved that place 30 years ago when I was a dirt poor kid cuz it had fair deals so I ate well. Happy to see it still operating.
Cool, I hope the video brought back some memories! Thanks for watching
THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS AMAZING WALK AROUND VIDEO, I REALLY ENJOYED IT LOTS OF PEOPLE OUT THERE BUT IT DON'T LOOK SAFE, KEEP UP THE INCREDIBLE WORK
You're welcome Tracey!
Hastings.
I'm so sorry Susan, I hope you are reunited with her one day...
Ruth O this is her daughter im sure shes tried to help but when a family member makes choices like the stuff that will land you here theres Uasually nothing you can do
If Riverview hospital didn't close this problem would not be as challenging as it is....
ok, you do have a point, but not every one who experienced trauma become a homeless drug addict.
Susan, what a terrible thing to say about your daughter. Ever wonder why she turned to drugs? Maybe because you're a piece of shit
I have to admit I ended up here because one song from "28 days later" was named East Hastings and some guy mentioned the hopelessness of the people you find there. I can see what he was talking about.
East Hastings is a song from Canadian artist Godspeed you! Black Emperor. It's off their album called f# a# infinity

Get real.
Wow my first time in east Van was like a film set great video footage man thanks for sharing 👍🇨🇦
You're welcome!
i love Vancouver. lived here my whole life and i was born only a few cities away, these people are terribly sad people with terribly sad stories.. i always thought it was entertaining to drive down hastings and seeing the wackos.. like watching a kid hurt themselves.. BUT! i wouldn't ever want to live anywhere else! anything you could possibly do or need is only a few blocks away or if you're looking for a more nature-esk adventure, its only a little drive away from countless parks, hikes, scenic forest walks, mountains, BEACHES, a nude beach!! and suspension bridges.. I love the Fraser Valley.. you can choose to be a bum on the street or you can get rich or famous out of Vancouver. It's all up to you!

Vancouver and Surrey are rapidly deteriorating, maple ridge is sadly following in the footsteps
Wow, I haven't been to Surrey for a while, or Maple Ridge for that matter. It's not getting as bad as this is it?
U know it's sad and true at the same time I've walked these streets east west and main drive thru em every time I go to van I'm like let's go I need a reminder and how greatful I am to be clean and I can tell others what I seen on those streets and what wrong and poor choices in life can lead to and yes the government just sets everyone up for failure when it comes to people who make wrong life choices letting them die instead of helping them
Streets look like usa today

You should've filmed when the Olympics came to town, and welfare was offering free bus rides for the homeless to get out of town...
greyhound??? Or city busses?

Vancouver canada! What the hell happen man !
It's like crazy video game
And worse than Winnipeg just a bit
This particular area on Hastings is bad. No doubt about it....
