RIDING A RAID

- Published by J. W. Randolph in Richmond in 1863. The composer was not credited. The melody is from the Scottish tune Bonnie Dundee.
This song chronicles some of the exploits of fabled rebel cavalry commander, J.E.B. Stuart, specifically his 1862 screening movement during Confederate General R.E. Lee’s Sharpsburg/Antietam Campaign. In the fall of that year, Lee’s strategic plans and dispositions had accidentally fallen into the hands of Union General George B. McClellan. Stuart’s screening mission was crucial in buying Gen. Lee enough time to concentrate his scattered forces in preparation for meeting the much larger Union army in battle near Antietam Creek in Maryland. This inconclusive meeting on Sept. 17th, 1862, resulted in the single ‘bloodiest day’ in American military history.
Born and raised in Virginia and known to his familiars as ‘Jeb’, Stuart was an 1854 graduate of West Point Military Academy. He had served as a U.S. Army officer in Texas and Kansas and while serving in 1859 under the command of Robert E. Lee, a captain at that time, he played a major part in the capture of the fierce abolitionist, John Brown, at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. When Virginia seceded in the spring of 1861, Stuart resigned his commission and joined the Confederate army, ultimately being assigned to serve under Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862. - Видеоклипы
Wonderful! As I was listening, I couldn't shake the feeling that the tune sounded familiar - then I read the description and realised it was borrowed from 'Bonnie Dundee'. That put a little smile on my face....Americans and Britons really are cultural cousins in so many ways! Love from the UK 🇬🇧❤🇺🇲
Stacey so nice you like the tune penned at Abbotsford just before sir walter had his breakfast 😀 1825 the tune now belongs to city of dundee any body can play it 😀 it was bought by public subscription in 1940 for over £135.a lot of money then on behalf of cheif librarian tune played on pipes all round the world 🌎 its played at hide park on queens birthday for royal horse artillery they gallop before setting up for 21 gun salute 😀 better cannons than calumbo 😆 🤣 the 2 companies who formed the coldstream guards 💂♂️ were at the seige of the town dundee 1st Sept 1651 general monk ❤❤💙💜💙
The southern accent from America evolved from an accent from a certain area in Britian.
That wasn't a popular opinion 250 years ago.
Though the song is now a British military song, Bonnie Dundee was a Scottish Rebel song.
We’re more than cultural cousins
Amazing! Thank you all for keeping Confederate history alive! God save the South!
Happy memorial day from germany , let's commemorate our southern soldiers !
Yankees tell me Sherman was doing a little trolling in Georgia while I tell them Stuart was doing a little trolling in Pennsylvania
This band is a fabulous asset to American cultural history.
What a crazy nice thing to say ! Thanks !!
You're singing with heart 2nd south👍👍👍
Coming from NYC, the most Yankee place in the land, I love what you guys do. God Bless you Southern brethren!

Hello from England
I love these old civil war and folk songs ...must be that bit of the reb in me 😃
"Long may you wave !" as JEB used to say.
I always keep my girth tight and my reins slack so I'm ready to ride. 😎
God bless Dixie
How hauntingly accurate for the madness of our present times.
A super theme for the PC game "Mosby's Confederacy", and something to start my working day on the road with morning coffee before I "saddle-up".
Fabulous rendition 🤠
I'm literally cryin' that you guys retired. Who is going to continue this such heritage of Southerner?
Beats me, but thanks very much for the kind word ! We miss all of you too !
It's weird hearing Bonnie Dundee with different lyrics but I like it.
I'm going to go listen to Bonnie Dundee for the first time so I get the same feeling in reverse.
It's why I love the South. They can make any tune their own. Fills out my spotify playlist too
Shoot, I didn't realize it was a Jacobite song. God save the King!
Greetings from Poland Southerners!
The same from me!
Greatings for Brazil, come to see the confederate city "Americana" and "Santa Barbara", it was founded by southerns after the civil war.
Sounds nice, Brazil is a beautiful country, with equally beautiful people. I can see why they chose to travel and settle there of all places.
This was posted on my birthday. Best birthday ever
Happy belated bday
Most of my family volunteered in the war on both sides; therefore, my family was torn and sadly they mostly died.
Sorry to hear it. My family had one on either side too, but both survived the war. My brother and I wouldn't be here and we wouldn't be having this exchange if they hadn't...
Same here God bless your family they were truly wonderful
Beautiful as always, good job lads👍👍. Greetins from Spain

I’ve always wanted to be able to play a violin, looks hard.
'Tis.
The trick with hard things is to break them down into little not hard things. But especially at the start, it's real tricky.
@@oscarwind4266 I would think so.
Just don't forget to rosin your bow before playing, makes it a bit easier. Also, coincidentally the name of another tune you may enjoy listening to.

Search the web for Civil War reenactments in Tennessee and surrounding states. There's usually a big one on a '5th' anniversary of major battles - 125th, 130th, etc. Check out Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Franklin, Nashville, Chattanooga, etc., etc. Also search for CW reenactment units near you...

It’s all a part of a history all Americans share. Sure.
As long as you're not an ass about it I'm sure they won't care.
Without Yankees, who would we 'play' with ? Everyone is welcome.
