Religion is based on Faith and Science is based on Reason. Asha’arites emphasised Faith and Mutallazites Reason. The two domains are mutually exclusive. I agree with Dr Sahib that this question will always remain unanswered. Wonderful examples of Sir Syed and Iqbal, one started from point A and ended up at Point B and the other just its opposite. I think the prevailing circumstances and individual’s psychology play a big role.

In the context of Pakistan, the history of Science in the Indian Sub Continent in which one of the oldest civilization existed and the oldest documented science scriptures exists, Pakistan which happened to be a part of India until the last 75 years, why intellectuals in Pakistan shy away from accepting and discussing the legacy of India which they should also be proud of. Pakistan not being part of the Middle East should identify more as from India. I am not saying that Pakistan doesn't have its own identity, but should acknowledge it as the son from the same mother and so discuss the inheritances of the legacies of science and mathematics with its young minds and not disconnect with it due to differences in faith.

India and South Asia in general no longer host the same quality of universities and centres of learning they once possessed in times of old. Nalanda is a historical landmark, and within its dust encrusted walls sits the forgotten legacy of giants of maths and logic. I say this as a person born in Pakistan but a citizen of the world.
The Arabs formulated algebra by borrowing extensively from the knowledge of ancient India, all those who have attended impartially to the evidence of history would know this fact.
Having said that, it’s important to remember that contemporary scholars, especially scientists who attend the prestigious universities of the western world, are inevitably imbued with a western bias. The ancient Greeks were indeed exemplars of incredible scientific discovery and knowledge, ranging from Archimedes to Pythagoras. But they weren’t the only ancients who advanced science, as western intellectuals seem to think.
The name of the first ever manned lunar mission was ‘Apollo’, the name of an Ancient Greek god. The name Cosmos, denoting the universe, is a Greek word meaning order, the opposite of chaos, ‘disaster’ is Greek for bad star etc. The entire western framework for scientific rationality leans heavily on the classical Greeks and their works, as I learned when I read Carl Sagans Cosmos. Pervez Hoodhboy, and other scholars like him, educated at elite western universities like MIT or Harvard, Stanford or Yale, would inevitably regurgitate much of that bias.
Edit: this response was NOT written by chat gpt or any AI bot lol.

Credit goes to the little girl who sat through the whole length of a high level science class. It is unmeaning to go for compatibility of science and religion. Religion is founded on belief which deals with material and moral world so far as those relate to humans. Whereas science is limited to exploration of truth about natural phenomena in our material world irrespective of humans, their values, belief, morality and life hereafter. In my view science also should be guided by morality and shouldn’t go for discoveries of things utterly destructive to humanity.

*There are at least hundreds of millions of gods, according to the ancient Shastras of Sanatana Dharma such as the four Vedas, the Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, etc. The Puranas especially give vast genealogies of the gods, including thousands of specific deities. There are major Gods, full forms/aspects of the ultimate reality Saguna Brahman, like Ganesha, Shakti, Parvati, Kali, Durga, Shiva, Vishnu, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Surya, Skanda, etc., ranging down to still great but non-absolute Gods like Brahma, Hanuman, Ganga, Samudra, Indra, Agni, Soma, Prithvi, Nandi, Manasa, etc. There are Avatars like Rama, Krishna, Narasingha, Parashurama, Buddha, Minakshi, and many more.*
Hope this will help you understand your religion better.

They said that when you say that life and the World are too complex to not have been created by a God, then that God is even more complex how did it has no creator? How did that God created itself? Also, Jainism asks one more question that you say God existed before the creation of the World so where did He existed? In a certain space, that means even the space have an eternal existence so why can't the World be created by itself? Very deep.

Sorry to see that all questions are baseless. You follow a religion because you are born to parents who follow that religion. If you were shifted to a hindu parent or chrisian parent then you will follow their religion. It means religion has no control over your mind. However science is universal...... prove and this will be followed by everyone across the world.

For Pakistan to make progress in Science or other fields, the country and the people need to embrace their Indian identity rather than claim some nonexistent arabic heritage. Indian heritage provides solid identity that gave Taxila university that was established in present day Pakistan. Your ancestors were not in the desert. They were in the fertile delta.

The reason for Pakistan’s current state of affairs can be summed up in the title of this discussion. The question should never be “Is Science compatible with religion, the question should be Is religion compatible with science”. The answer for most part will always be a resounding No. These books were written by people from that era and with their limited understanding of the world around them and it is clearly evident if you actually read the books. For a common man of that era, they were definitely advanced to some extent , but they cannot be compatible with our current understanding and expecting so is unfair as well. It is almost like expecting a first grader to have the same understanding of theoretical physics as a physicist with a PhD degree. We should aspire get lessons of morality, empathy and compassion from any of the religious books, but expecting them to solve science problems is utterly irrational. While we know that Life as we know it the most rarest thing in the universe, 80% of the world’s population is fighting over “whose invisible friend is better? And whose medieval books are the holiest?”. If we allocated even a portion this collective intellectual capital into science, imagine how advanced and rational our world would be. Instead of falling for rhetoric and brainwashing, everyone should think on their own and form opinions based on facts and objective understanding.
I see divinity in the Hubble deep field picture, photograph of M81’s black hole, 20 billion transistors being printed on a 1 square inch of an apple’s M3 chip, the LHC and the JWST. Sit back and try to understand the universe around you and the awe it can inspire.

Dr. Hoodboy had to waste 2hrs of his valuable time just because we don't accept the fact that its not religion's business to teach science to humanity and defenitely not Islam or quran's business to teach science to Muslims. The same reason why it is not science's business to prove existence of God/Gods or Allah. And why are we so insecure about Islam not being compatible with Science? Even if it is not compatible with science whats the big deal?

    Scientists are seekers of truth.
Religious are believers of what has been said as truth.
Difference is in seeking the truth and experiencing it with our faculty of mind and senses versus blindly believing in tenets of religion and things unverifiable by our mind and senses to be believed & accepted.
Scientific facts are verifiable by anybody anywhere in the world by following the same principles to arrive at the same conclusions.
Religious sayings can only be believed.Beliefs and interpretations differ from place to place.

The QURAN has nothing to do with SCIENCE being mutually exclusive. The prominence of religion and its role in creation of Pakistan and later on Islam particularly Sunnism became so important, universal and dominant that all opposition was crushed legally (BLASPHEMY)or by force ( JIHADIS).Now it is difficult to get out of this conflict in spite of courageos, committed, enlightened and well meaning people like Prof.Dr.Pervej Houdbhoy. In fact it is not only Pakistan but the whole Islamic world is suffering because of this conflict.Other religions like Hinduism and Christianity equally have conflicting views expressed in their books against science. But the opposition is not that strong as is by the Jihadi of Islam where all opposition deserves to be ELEMINATED.THE FUTURE IS WITH AND ONLY WITH SCIENCE RELIGION HAS NO FUTURE WHERE IT CONTRADICT SCIENCE.

Human science is empirical. It only believes in things that we can percieve through any of our five senses or the instruments that we have made to extend them.
Yet Allah talks about the other creation like angels and jinn whose existance cannot be proved scientifically.

Science has proved when you open your eyes the rays falling on a picture or object enters your eyes and reaches the brain which comprehends the image or objects and identifies it.
In other words If Allah's creation itself is full of objects in nature having shapes and sizes how can one be against images, shapes and objects of certain shapes and material.
Can the learned Professor explain this ???
