As a maker, and an editor, and someone who worked in the newspaper game from the late 80s to the mid-90s; pre-digital era (just on the cusp, actually, of going fully digital), I understand your pain. We used to sit there and hand cut - or deep-etch - photos with a scalpel and they'd be re-photographed at whatever scale we dictated; now, it's all Photoshop work (which I became fluent in, after I left the profession). I get the frustration, entirely. Wonderful work, and I was thinking about Rub 'N Buff as a method, just before you mentioned it, so there you go ...

Seeing your passion has totally ignited my own passion for creating props I never even knew I was passionate about, I made my own cap shield, and Freddy glove, based off your ideas and templates. I think to do a glowing prop, you'd need to use EL wire and hide the electronics near the hilt with your hands-- that is, every time someone wants a picture, make sure you're grabbing just the right spot. Seems like a lot of trouble, and your version is awesome as-is.
Glad to see someone state that desktop devices such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC etc. are all problematic and things go wrong and break. But when they behave themselves and the project you conceived is seen through to the end and turns out amazing, these things can be taken in your stride as just part of the process. Great job.
Definitely quite an adventure! We have three laser cutters and I know just how quirky and finicky they can be. Having someone else do a project for you by remote control can be quite frustrating. But the three of you persevered and it came out amazing!
I understand your pain with shipping delays. I've been waiting 10 months for something that was SUPPOSED to be here in January. I know it isn't the company's fault since it has to be imported, but they did say that shipping containers are in shortage, and they aren't the priority. We really take things for granted, and one of those things I now know is shipping containers.
For the record there is actually a very simple solution to your etching problem with the laser cutter all you have to do is take a piece of backing material, say some scrap 1/4 ply, you cut the perimeter out of the play and remove the interior without touching the backing and you place your intended piece in the cutout section and you have a perfectly centered outline
This turned out amazing honestly. I had no clue how you were going to make a purely magic energy weapon like this, but this worked out fantastically. Since this would also be an energy weapon that you could try lighting up this time, do you think you could try the Crucible Sword from Doom Eternal one day?
So just a couple of thoughts based on my experiences with laser engravers/cutters: When you’re doing your vector file design, you want to make it so the lines of the design connect to each other, not overlap at junctures/points. Otherwise most softwares read it as making multiple passes in that area and making multiple cuts that get progressively deeper/thinner like with the spear. At least when I needed cuts on both sides of a material, I would submit two files to the machine: one oriented one way, and then flipped and mirrored on the other side. That way in theory, you can cut the one side and just flip your material in the engraver and have it cut the second file for that side. But yeah great build overall, turned out nicely despite all those delays!
I love the golden color. Next project, doctor Brown's, glasses from back to the future. I'm sure, that could involve using silver tinting film and plastic sheeting.
I had phone problems sorry but i have court up. The lego torch was a big wow and yay the spiderman web shooters were brilliant with the rub and buff. But the eternals spear head is perfect. As always when are you doing the guyver units in there storage case idea. Loving the build as all ways. Stay safe all.
I would’ve liked to have this with some kind of LED that makes the edges and thin lines glow gold, like fiber optic lights or some kind of thin LEDs that would work on edges and fit inside those thin lines, but this is still pretty good.
Here is a tip for you Odin, if you have a stronger tape, like Gorilla Tape, you can place it on the protective film on the acrylic and then peel the Gorilla Tape off, and it will take the film off with it.
Hey Odin next time you need to pull off backing paper try blue tape or if that doesn't work then duct tape, stick it on over sized and pull it off, it should take the entire paper piece off
Theres so many points during the fist part where you could cut to the scene of ron swanson throwing the computer into the bin and it would make perfect sense
Normally when I laser acrylic plates, I simply center the artwork on the plate size. So when it starts from reg (zero point) it can laser the details and then flip the plate with new graphics centred (mirrored), then laser details and final cutout..

Oh I have a Glowforge and I have the cutting problem ALL THE TIME - i increase the power and reduce the speed.. OR I do multiple passes. ..Anyone know why it has inconsistent cutting?

Is there a reason you didn't just paint the spear head while the protective layer was still on? I'd imagine the etching would've removed that layer where the details were and let the paint stick.

The rub and buff just looks too good not to do. Plus it gives a really cool effect on the edge with the refraction
