Chapeau! Many years ago I made my dream of owning my own steel yacht come true by constructing one myself but having the hull built by a shipyard. Since I liked my plans, I received it at a very low price with the condition that the shipyard was allowed to continue building it. When the bowl arrived, I found slightly rusty spots under the primer and had everything sandblasted on the inside and sanded everything on the outside. It took me 16 months for corrosion protection, painting, interior work, marinization of 2 diesel engines and all the technology.

I have had the pleasure of discussing and meeting sailors and workers in the marine industry who explained me a few things about restoring a boat. My father owns a 13 meters Bavaria sailing yacht in the south of France and I sailed a lot with him the past 20 years. It is indeed hard work to maintain a sailing boat and it requires a lot of attention!
My father, after his stint in the Navy was over, found an old scrap boat, stripped it down to the hull and rebuilt it. It must have been seaworthy, we went fishing in Lake Erie every summer. ⚓
This is probably harder than building the yacht from scratch. What a beautiful restoration on this yacht, much respect for all the hard work they put into this vessel. A smooth sea never made a great sailor. Happy sailing, you deserve every inch of that horizon.
You have probably never done that. Rebiulding the old yacht is always much easier and a lot cheaper then building a new one. The only difference is, that buying a new one cost you a lot of money, rebuilding on the other hand takes a lot of your time and requires a lot of practical skills. If you cannot do it yourself, better buy a new one...

Worked on crabbing boats half my life and spent the other half as a marine contractor. In my opinion, buying a boat to fix up is one of the worst ideas most people can have. You need money to burn to do this properly and your boat will never be worth what you put in. If you have a special boat/hullI can see why you would do this. Otherwise just get something in good shape. Every boatyard has an old boat back in the weeds for 10 years they’d be excited to give you (or sell you if you’re slow) but that doesn’t mean it’s a good deal. All that being said, I wish these folks the best with their vessel
What a beautiful restoration and this is the height of the word dedication to something you love! That is amazing what they did bring her back to life a lot of hard work for 16 months but certainly worth it in the end!

How envious (without malice) of this couple. For the challenge of restoring an old yacht and making it seaworthy again, working even in the cold. Another thing that impressed me was the fact that the boat had so many metal parts to scrape, cut, weld and paint.
