  • Earlier this year we destroyed the 22re in the 1985 Toyota Pickup. And finally we are brining it back to life with a 5vz 3.4L swap. This engine upgrade is relatively easy, and huge power upgrade.

    Here in australia the easiest source for a 5vz is a vzj95 prado. The only very annoying thing is... from first year production onwards they ALL had immobilizer systems integral to the ecu. So to do a 5vz swap here down under you need the key, key reader ring, amplifier and security ecu from the donor car... And not to mention a whole lot of patience!

      The wiring is straight forward. Pretty much need to give the ECM power, and connect ECM to COR to tell fuel pump to turn on, and BAM its ready to start. Then just gotta figure out how to get the gauges to work, pretty straight forward if you have the diagrams. As mentioned every swap is different, can't just say connect this wire to that wire and it works.

    • @matthewstorm5188
      @matthewstorm5188 Год назад

      22R’s have other shortcomings as well. Many have piston slap and suffer from excessive oil consumption and blowby. They can also have head gasket issues. And I have never seen a 22R that didn’t have a pitted deck surface. Oh, and let’s not forget then that top end tick that you often can’t get rid of no matter how hard you try to adjust the valves.
      Of course, much of the reason why people do swaps like this is that, even if your 22R does not have any of these issues, it’s just not the nicest motor to live with on a day-to-day basis. They’re slow. They guzzle gas, especially in relation to their meager power output. And they’re just generally rough and noisy. They are admittedly a product of an earlier era, and perhaps should be judged in that context. But the reality is that we can do better these days (and, indeed, since the mid 90s when these Tacoma motors debuted).
