I have being using a YAMAHA MG124CX mixer over 10 years but did not understand and use this function. Your explanation is clear and very informative. Thankyou so much. cheers
You have a simple way of explaining concepts about equipment and functions. In general, your channel has the information that everyone needs. For that, I thank you and hope that you continue to do a good job. Macedo Pinto Portugal
This is an incredibly good explanation. Using the complex compressor to explain the one-knob compressor was a brilliant idea. Thanks for this very helpful video.
Finally. I've been struggling with the one knob compressors on my Yamaha MG12XU (and previous MG10XUF) mixers for the past month or so. I've watched this 3 or 4 times and something finally clicked this last time.
I am a DJ, have been for 20 years, and never really understood exactly what the compression knob does on the mixers I own. I knew it made vocals louder, and too much compression will get feedback on my mics, but I did not know exactly how this all worked. Thanks for the info
Thank you for this video! As payment I will leave you with a sound guy joke. "Did you hear about the band that had a Ukrainian sound guy? They had a Czech one too. ... Czech, one too."
That’s awesome sir thank you! You are my second compressor video ever after getting a mixing table lol. Everything you said made perfect sense! I’m 44 and have played instruments and been into music my whole life. I’ve always seen these knobs but never knew the possibilities of modifying the sound like this! Thank you for explaining this!! God Bless you too my friend!
Thank you so much for the excellent explanation. What I learned herefrom is not only about one knob compression configuration, but also how to set a conventional compressor limiter. I will have to make some experiments to learn further. God bless!
very good description, I have just ordered the mg10xuf to replace my alto desk which broke today. I now feel confident I can set the compression properly. Thank you
Excellent video again Bruno... You're a true star! Wonderful at explaining audio setup and configuration, you bring great joy to many people who want to learn about sound setup.... God bless you
Beautifully explained - thank you very much. I’m getting a Yamaha MG20XU desk shortly. Amidst the number of clowns who ‘explain’ stuff they don’t understand, you are a god-send. Gratitude and cheers from Australia - god bless!!
A very good explanation and very helpful, because many mixer's manuals have a simplest description of this resource. Thanks for sharing this knowledge with us, man. I just made my subscription.
Glad it was helpful - learning how to use compression in recording is a lifelong learning process and the pros often have entire collections of compressors because they all sound a bit different.
Very nice explanation. And that goes for ALL your GLB Productions videos. I'm learning a lot of great stuff that would have taken years to learn on my own.......... :)
Excellent !!! Now, I understand what is "compression" & what it means ! Thanks a lot for these clear explanations ! I am a drummer so I will take care with this knob. Thanks a lot, Emilio L. (France), musically.
What a fabulous video and explanation. A very simple description of how compression works. I’m new to all this and your videos have really helped out, Bruno! Thanks fella, you’re a legend!! 👍👍
Greaaat video, the best explanation, mainly about one knob adjustments. I would like a video about the AKG D7 (microphone), or the BOSS VE-1 (ambience pedal). Hugs from Brazil!
Thank you for this video! I have the same mixer, and this has been really helpful - on compression in general. BTW - I love this mixer. For my needs, the feature set is brilliant, and the bang for the buck extremely high.
Yeah, it's definitely not as solid as some!! I think having the large external power supply makes it seem even less solid though. Because of the substantially reduced weight, it seems to do okay and require less on-unit protection than say an equivalent Mackie. Thanks again! I passed this on to a coworker who also found benefit in your simple explanation of compression.
My EARS have always been GREAT, Sadly, my understanding of compression is about the same as it was in 67..LOL. My only exp with using one is on a TINY VOX Mini 3 amp, which has the ONE knob COMP... My vocals sound KILLER thru that lil thing when its almost maxed out. No "specs' are giving regarding what is actually going on with that ONE knob but Im guessing its does exactly what youve just decribed here. When using COMP software, I move the lines and dots around to get what I want vocally and have never looked at the numbers, thus remaining CLUELESS..LOL..I just bought a DBX1066 for my lil solo show to use in an AUX SEND/RET of an old 8 CH Brain and your explantion here has REALLY HELPED understanding whats really going on.. Still got alot to learn about expansion/attack/gating but lll likely let my EARS do the learning for me..LOL.. Thanks for the video!
This is a good tutorial to help you understand what compressor do and how to use it in live sound. It use to be when round knob mixers and then slider mixer came along the person manning the board would keep there fingers on the fader to keep sound level in check not wanting to overload a tape machine and keep room amp sounding the best. But you have to remember as a rule use the lease amount of compression you can. Proper mic techniques must be use to get the best sound recording and amp feed. Knowing how your mics pick up sound is the first line of defense against distortion of sound. Also picking the right mics for the job. You do not want to reduce dynamic of sound. Good recordings and amplification must have good dynamic. Using to much compression will dull your sound. My goal is always to get the best most dynamic sound when I am working with a any kind of mixer. Limit it as must as possible. Good recording and live sound is still a art form. And it take practice to!
This clearly explains compression very well- thanks! Especially since I have MG10XU that has some similar controls. My question is this, as more compression increases the gain on the microphone, do I compensate by turning the microphone gain down, or do I need to turn the channel level down (or doesn't it matter). Thanks again for the best review on compression I've found!
Thanks for watching George. In my experience there is no need to adjust channel gain or fader until you hit about 3 o'clock on the compressor knob. Yamaha have calibrated these pretty well for everyday use.
This was great! I learned so much from this tutorial and another of your's I just watched. I will definitely be coming back for more as I become more acquainted with my new digital mixer.
Bruno! Much thanks for the explanation. You have taken what can be very hard to understand and made it pretty simple!! THAT my friend, is not easy to do!!! LOL!!! Again, many thanks and take care of yourself!!!!!
Thanks for the informative video, would you please post about using lapel and how to control it's feed back. will look forward on this., thank you in advance., ive always watching your lesson here and its so very useful and helpful! Thanks a lot!
to add on the point around 7:20ish, there are upwards compressors that do make quiet sounds louder, increasing the gain of sound that is below the threshold. these sound great on drums in the studio, but would be completely unusable in a live situation, as they would cause feedback immediately.
@@GLBProductions a broadcast leveler is more of a complete package usually, a gate/expander, upwards and downwards multiband compression, EQ, de-essing, exciter, and such, all set to a specific preset by the head of production and then locked to those setting for its lifetime of use. the aphex 2020 or the TC finalizer might be more studio-y examples of that sort of thing

Thanks a lot! For the first time i saw a precise and simple explanation about compression which does not causes fear on me.

Yes I've seen them used in broadcast as well - I believe there they are referred to as levellers.
