I think a lot of the insecurities get pushed onto them by their mothers too. Most of the moms are VERY big on appearances, public and private. I forgot which mom, probably kelly, called Abby fat over and over, if they're willing to say that kind of shit on air, I'm sure they have no issue saying it behind closed doors. The only thing that isn’t bad here is that dancers “suck in” their stomachs for posture. Not everyone calls it sucking in, sometimes it’s phrased differently, but it’s a thing in ballet for proper alignment.

we’re not sucking in, i promise! we’re actually just closing our rib cages to help with our balance. but dancers can get bad training (which i have) and aren’t taught how to properly close their ribs, causing them to think that closing your ribs is sucking in! hope this helps clear some things up :)

She’d been told it so many times by fans and people she loved it got drilled into her head, and she believed it. I hope she’s changed now. People, STOP bodyshaming. So true. When you're going through puberty, your weight's all over the place. You'll be chubby one moment and thin as a beanpole the next; because your body does not grow all at the same time. That's NORMAL.

Ok one note about Abby telling girls to suck in their stomachs:
It is a technique thing in the dance world to hold your abdominals tightly, and a good way to explain that to kids is to tell them to suck in their stomachs because that will activate all the right muscles.
This'll probably get buried but I just wanted to justify it. :)

No one ever mentions that the girls go through puberty and this affects their body shape.

But since dance and ballet are arts that involve the use of bodies, kids learning how to dance learn how to use their bodies too. I think as a teacher you should rather show students what a powerful and beautiful machine their bodies are if they learn to use them right. Learning how to engage muscles is hard and training them can be even harder if you don't love the process of working hard. I think for little kids it could be a funny thing to give a name to their bellies so that they can remember to pull their friends/stomachs in. As long as it is presented as a game,it can be a funny way to help them learn how to properly dance. And they will benefit from this knowledge for their whole life. But I understand this was not the case at all. TW/ ED, body image, abuse in dance/
wow this is basically my story. I was a competitive dancer for 10 years and it was constant abuse. Im now an adult and I still confront the trauma and abuse I was subjected to by my dance "teachers" (aka a*users) and Im in active ED recovery. I still struggle with body dysmorphia and several kinds of disordered eating patterns. I loved dancing but it absolutely contributed to robbing my childhood. It has seriously made me consider ever putting any of my children in an environment like this. Ive been in therapy for YEARS and still have yet to fully face this with a licensed professional because its so distressing. Im finally starting to understand everything that happened now that my body& brain recover from constant states of trauma and mental health crisis. I am so sad that this is the reality for so many other dancers....if not all of us. Im now a happy fatty dancing however and whenver I want. I appreciate videos like this as I work through my trauma. lets name and talk about the collective shame and trauma so many of us experienced and continue to experience. xo

I also wanted to add why it was so damaging for me to want to look like them. I’m the same age as Chloe, just to be clear.
I was 16/17/18 watching them at far younger ages with that as my goal. I was not using them as they are as my motivation, I was using them years back.
But that’s the same as me pulling up pictures from when I was that age and wanting to look like that.
Society really wants women to stay looking like little girls.

Once when I was about 8 years old a girl in my ballet class told me I was far and that I couldn't dance, and instead of taking the words personally I decided to work hard and prove to her and more importantly myself that I'm a strong powerful person that deserves to be treated just like everybody else

There's no need to any kind of shame people, not for their appearance or what they like or anything. Everyone is their own person and should be allowed to live their own life as they see fit. The world of children's dance is terrible sometimes. I went to ballet when I was 5, and if you were 7 or older you were given the 'special juice' and you weren't allowed to drink anything else. The 4-6 kids were only allowed water. Once I saw multiple bags of weight loss teas in the instructors bag and it was the juice. In the hour of intense dance training we were allowed 1 apple each.
Every week we were put on scales and you were competing with your peers to be the lowest weight. I was always the heaviest out of my age group so I was always given the crap parts in shows. I left after about 6 months, but a popular girl at school still went. As we got older I saw her lose more and more weight and her smile was becoming faker every day. I hope she's OK, it's been over 2 years since I last saw her.

Thank you for making this. I’ve struggled with eating disorders since I was 13 (and I’m 30 now) and used to be a dancer, so this means a lot to me because the studio I was in was extremely critical. Teachers used to make comments to me (and other students’) about our bodies and I took it to an extreme and eventually was hospitalized for my first ED. I went to treatment last year for atypical anorexia and it was so hard to battle it; it’s like you’re fighting an ED voice in your head that is constantly comparing and ridiculing. But my whole point is if you don’t develop a healthy relationship with food at a young age or are being body shamed, this can carry on with you for years. One of the ladies in the ED rehab center I was in was in her 50s and said she had anorexia since she was a teen. Please get help if you’re struggling. Thank you again for this. 💜🙏🏻

This is such an important topic, thank you for covering it with so much care. Unfortunately eating disorders are so common these days, especially with social media and sports. I used to competitively figure skate all throughout highschool (I’m a freshman in college now), and I was diagnosed with AN just over a year and a half ago. I’m a lot more open about it now, it was the worst experience of my life. I’ve gotten help since then and I’m in a much better place, but after going through it myself I see a lot of the same signs people noticed in me in these girls. I really feel for them, especially being in the spotlight at such a young age. it makes me so sad to see anyone struggle with their body image and eating.
