I guess that would explain why Donna was killed off in the sequel.
Even John Travolta and Sandra Bullock are also other actors who don’t like to do sequels.

I feel like they could have used another way of having her not on the island at the time over killing her. Also they could have let us know exactly how she died and how long her and Sam got to be together again before it happened. Meryl has said she’d love for them to work her into a third mamma Mia somehow.

This movie is a bit of an absurdist, surreal masterpiece of strangeness. Considering Donna's mom was clearly mentioned being dead (someone up there) in the first movie it's sort of amazing she's in this one. When this one came out I think me and my friends saw it 5 times in theater. I'm just gonna say too, the casting is so well done. You can't tell me those aren't the original cast members younger selves. Last thing, I think Cher was added as the grandma because along with ABBA, Cher was the pop icon of the 70's

I saw this movie in the cinema three times and I still think it's a bit more of a masterpiece than the first one. This part gave the impression that the kitsch was more down to earth and therefore more believable. And it's definitely a more emotional movie and I cry at the end every time. By the way. I feel like it must have been so stressful for Lily James to play young Meryl Streep, that is some big shoes to fill. Also Amanda and Sky's actor(Dominic Cooper) dated and broke up between the movies, which I feel contributes to how little they interact in the sequel.

  • @Heida77
    @Heida77 6 месяцев назад +14

    Cast facts/cameos:
The two male ABBA members both have cameos in the film: Björn Ulvaeus as a college chancellor during When I Kissed the Teacher and Benny Andersson as a piano player during Waterloo (Benny also appears briefly in the When I Kissed the Teacher scene).
This film had the biggest opening weekend at the box-office in the careers of Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Cher.
This is the first time in Meryl Streep's career she has ever done a sequel to a film she has done before (she is in Mary Poppins Returns which is technically a sequel but she didn't star in the first one). She doesn't do sequels but she did this one, which says a lot.
Despite playing mother and daughter, Cher is only three years older than Meryl Streep. Cher was originally offered the role of Tanya in the first film which she turned down. She also handpicked Andy Garcia to play Fernando. After appearing in the film, Cher recorded a full album of ABBA covers titled Dancing Queen.
Amanda Seyfried plays Cosette in 2012's Les Misérables, which I recommend. It's not a musical but I also recommend Letters to Juliet with Amanda and Vanessa Redgrave (also starring in a small role is Ashley Lilley who plays Ali, Sophie's dark-haired friend, in the first Mamma Mia). Fun fact: Baby Sophie was played by Amanda's IRL daughter. Amanda and Dominic Cooper (Sky) dated for about a year after meeting during the making of the first film. I don't know what happened or why they broke up but maybe that's part of why their chemistry is a little off. Even if you didn't really root for them or like them together you could feel their chemistry in the first one.
Lily James (young Donna) was no doubt the star of this film. Along with Cinderella, she's also been in films such as Baby Driver and Yesterday along with Pam & Tommy miniseries and Downton Abbey.
Jeremy Irvine (young Sam) has starred in films such as War Horse, The Woman in Black: Angel of Death and The Railway Man, the last in which he plays a younger version of Colin Firth's character (also stars Stellan Skarsgård).
Hugh Skinner (young Harry) has a small role in 2012's Les Misérables which also stars Amanda Seyfried.
Jessica Keenan Wynn (young Tanya) was in Heathers: The Musical off-Broadway. She comes from a big acting family.
    Goofs:
There are some continuity errors, mainly the fact that Donna basically said her mum was dead in the first one ("Somebody up there has got it in for me. I bet it's my mother"). Also, in the first film when Sophie reads Donna's diary it is established that Donna hooked up with the three men in the following order: Sam, Bill and Harry. In the flashbacks in this one it's Harry, Bill and Sam (although she has sex with Bill last). They also look nothing like how she saw them in the quick flashback scene for obvious reasons. And in this one Tanya and Rosie meet Bill and Sam but in the first one they seem shocked to hear that Donna was with 3 guys back-to-back in such a short amount of time. Finally, in the first one, Donna says she didn't go back home when she got pregnant because her mother told her not to bother coming back. In this one it is implied that her mum got pregnant with her after a short fling herself (it's never explicitly said but the story strongly hints that Fernando MIGHT be Donna's father and Sofie's grandfather), but that's more her being hypocritical than a goof. I get what you mean by you wish you had seen some resolution but I feel like this is more realistic.
    Details:
Sophie's biological father was confirmed to be Bill (who coincidentally is a Swede) by screenwriter Catherine Johnson and director Phyllida Lloyd of the first film. But even without that confirmation, the first film and this one even more so hints heavily at it being Bill due to Sophie being named after and inheriting his aunt Sofia (who is the same one as Lazaros's mother who owns the property which Donna stays in), plus the obvious fact that Sophie has blonde hair and blue eyes like him. If you wanna look even further into it: Bill's twin is a reference to the line he says to Sophie in the first film "You're not going to tell me that you have a twin sister, are you?" But I like that we never find out because DNA isn't what's most important. Also, since Sam married Donna at the end of the first film he is Sophie's step-dad regardless.
From what I've read, Meryl Streep would have come back for a bigger role but was fine with the decision to kill off Donna to give way for the younger cast, since with Donna dead in present day they could tell more of her story via flashbacks. They felt it was more emotional and impactful that way. It's kind of the same with the father thing for me in that I'm fine with them not saying explicitly how Donna died. It doesn't really matter. However, director Ol Parker said in an interview the original draft of the script revealed that Donna died of cancer.
When Sophie is walking in the church with her baby she is wearing a butterfly dress. In the flashback to young Donna walking in the same church holding baby Sophie she is wearing a butterfly necklace, further symbolizing their connectivity. Also, before Sophie enters the church, Slipping Through My Fingers can be heard in the background.
When young Donna and young Harry are walking by the fountain and during Waterloo, he is wearing a Johnny Rotten t-shirt. This is referenced by the character in the first film.
When young Donna and the group leave the graduation a small boat is shown with the name "Chiquitita".
    Behind the scenes:
There is a musical number that was cut from the film sung by Lily James, but is included on the soundtrack album and the scene was later released - I Wonder (Departure): ruclips.net/video/mxozcjOgU2U/видео.htmlsi=IQVXiLwRux_AL-pP. The soundtrack also features The Day Before You Came sung by Meryl Streep. It was only recorded because it was one of Benny Andersson's and Richard Curtis' favorites ABBA songs and Meryl wanted to sing it, but it wasn't in the film as the lyrics didn't quite fit in with the story.
Though this film is set in Greece (in the fictional island of Kalokairi), it wasn't shot there like the first one. Due to economic reasons the location for this one was the small Croatian island of Vis.
Dame Julie Walters was given a day off from filming during the filming of the "Angel Eyes" number so she could attend a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, where she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. The cast and crew surprised her and welcomed her back singing "There Is Nothing Like a Dame" from the musical South Pacific.
Lily James had a broken toe while filming the Waterloo scene (she broke her toe on-set by running into a lighting stand). She also had an ingrown toenail and was limping when she had to cartwheel during The Name of the Game.
Writer and director Ol Parker said Tanya's line "Be still my beating vagina" after she sees Fernando was only added into the script once Andy García was cast, because he is "that hot".
There's a post-credit scene between young Harry and the Greek passport checker where the latter's actor, Omid Djalili, sings Take a Chance on Me a capella in an outtake.
Amanda Seyfried said she would be on board for another one, Julie Walters has said it would be her one and only reason for coming out of retirement and despite her character's death, Meryl Streep is willing to return in whatever form that may be. A third film has been confirmed but no word yet on cast or release date.

Me clearly in this movie I saw clearly Sam is Sophie dad because when I saw them they have a connection more than Harry or Bill and in the first one I saw little things about Donna and Sam having a hard and passionate love relationship
And If I had to choose one of the two movies I love the most my choice is not discutable it’s definitely Mamma Mia Here we go again because this is the most emotional one

Not familiar with Fleabag, but I know Hugh Skinner from Les Misérables, Poldark, and The Invitation(the 2022 one and not the 2015 one, which you ladies should totally react to if you haven’t seen it already).

'One of Us' was Abba's last really big hit in the UK, but it didn't seem to hit in the US. Sacrilegiously I think I prefer it to 'The Winner Takes it All'...

Hi, if your thinking of ABBA costume parties check out for ABBA revival bands. There are really good ones and there is even a mania with them.

@10:00 The order she slept with them is not necessarily the same as the order she met them, tbf. We only hear about the events surrounding Sophie's conception, but we know she knew all three prior to that by the way she refers to them.

Does anyone else feel like there had to be a better way to incorporate Cher into this without retconning Donna having a performer for a mother, played by an actress only three years older than Meryl? Like I love that Cher's in this, I love the Fernando duet, but like... come on, creators, try just a liiiiitle bit harder?
