    Woah great overview! BTW, a smiley face showing what open source can do is exactly what FOSS needs, real people telling you how awesome the product is. Open source is amazing it just needs better marketing.
    Can recommend doing Live Streams every now and then, to engage the community especially with Q&A. I've been doing it for Blender and the connection between the software and the community grows immensely. Subscribed right away and eager to learn more!

      Thank you, Pablo! I agree that FLOSS needs better marketing - I hope I can help with that :)
      We have many diamonds in the rough, that need to be shown to people.
      I don't know yet about livestreams on this channel, but on my won channel I do monthly live events when I make music with Ardour, answer questions and play music submissions from the viewers. Also: thank you for the shout-out on your livesteam the other day :)

    Hey unfa Thank you for the thought, diligence, creativity and sense of humor that you inject into your channel and the subject matter. I now realize that this playlist probably contains the prerequisite videos that I should have watched - not only before any of your others but even before I downloaded Ardour initially. Getting Ardour to work the way it is desired is as with anything else a detail_oriented endeavor. My intention is to download it again. However, this time I'll do it in lieu of following along with this playlist. This time I'm certain that I should have an improved experience.

    Free Software is a much better term than the diluted "open source" since the latter only focuses on the pragmatic side effects of the former. The term "open source" was created for the sole purpose of tricking people into using Free Software while avoiding the ethical and moral aspects of the conversation. The downside of course, is that millions of people are now using "open source software" despite having no appreciation for the 4 essential freedoms they benefit from.

    Hi. I recently learnt how to use ffmpeg's Filtergraph system (it's brain dead simple, all you need to know are the four separators ; , : and |)
    I realized ffmpeg could be used as a DAW, if it was just a little more interactive. So I wrote a bash script that provides the user with an interactive text menu with hot keys, allowing to simplify and speed up usage of ffmpeg, and enable to hear changes in audio settings during playback (using the zmq tool ffmpeg provides).
    I can now use ffmpeg as a rudimentary DAW (I can even build a UI for it since ffmpeg offers basic audio visualization tools as well as resizing and placement of video items, I haven't yet pushed it that far).
    Then I found out ffmpeg supports ladspa, so I started digging around to find what ladspa plugins are out there and was happy to find CAPS and Guitarix.
    But then I found out about Ardour just now. And wow, I am traditionally a Reason user, but with enough experience using ladspa, lv2 and free VST plugins to learn to achieve the same results I know how to achieve with Reason, I might fully ditch windows and become a full Linux user with Ardour and do my video editing with kden live

    For all those ready to switch so quickly to the latest DAW without thinking...
    remember what Unfa said as quoted by Fl Studio..."The performance transcends the medium everytime"
    If your musicianship is sh**ty in your current DAW, don't expect Ardour to magically transform the quality of your art.
    Sorry to burst your bubble .The truth is not nice.It's bitter but will save you time and set you free.
    Soultion: Build the mindset to upgrade you musicianship by studying /analysing and dissecting what you call good music and pursue the mastery of your musicianship with your current DAW.
    (You may still Try Ardour if you want to but the truth is up there ⬆)✔💖

      @unfa00 5 лет назад

      @@ImplosiveCatt I can't find the specific quote from that video you're referring to right now (if you could drop me a timestamp, that'd help).
      I generally try to not use terms "open-source" and "free of charge" interchangably. Even though the two usually go along, they are not bound to (the GPL license allows selling builds), and Ardour is a rare case where the source code is open and free, but the binaries are not free of charge.
      I usually say that Ardour is free to use on Linux, because it *practically* is - there are multiple sources supplying non-official Ardour builds free of charge on Linux. There's nothing stopping the same to be true on Windows or Mac - I just haven't seen anyone publish non-official Ardour builds for free on these platforms yet. If you did - please let me know!
      Note that Ardour on Windows is a relatively young thing, and the community of Ardour users on Windows is significantly smaller than the one of Linux users.
      But again - there's nothing preventing the Windows Ardour community to host their own builds of Ardour and give them free of charge.

    • @pauldavisthefirst
      @pauldavisthefirst 5 лет назад +1

      @@ImplosiveCatt I am the lead developer of Ardour. Unfa has already clarified this, but let me underline a couple of key points.
      Ardour is released under a license (the GPL) that allows anyone to do whatever they want with it, including redistributing it to others. As a result, most Linux distributions have chosen to make their own builds of Ardour available for their users, at no cost (like all the software that Linux distributions make available, more or less). However, we (the Ardour development community) do not support or encourage this behaviour, nor do we support the versions that they distribute (which differ from the ones we make available in a few key ways).
      You could choose to become a distributor of Ardour for Windows if you wanted to, and not charge anyone for the copies you give them. I wouldn't be thrilled about that, and I'd probably call you out by name if you did, but you'd be entirely within your rights to do so. It would just negatively impact the ability to have at least 2 people working full time on the software. The same is true of the versions distributed by Linux distros, but it's a situation we just have to live with.

    • @ImplosiveCatt
      @ImplosiveCatt 5 лет назад

      Thanks for clarification. The problem is that there are conflicting informations on internet. Some say it's free, some say it's not, some say that you can choose to pay or not when downloading from official site. Very confusing from the Win user perspective willing to explore linux as an music production alternative.
      People promoting linux as viable alternative often contribute to confusion. E.g. Unfa in his videos tells us that he believes in open source as a future. He made a list with linux daws and he explicitly says that it's all free "waiting to explore" (paraphrasing). Ardour was on the list.
      Maybe some terms are self-explanatory in Linux community but in Windows community they aren't. Am I allowed to try this software on Windows or do I need dual boot and download unsupported free version just for trial?
      What is the difference between unofficial free Ardour releases vs official?
