How to create a custom MIDI map for Ardour
Ardour ships with over 50 MIDI maps for various MIDI keyboards available on the market. But there are hundreds of those from dozens of manufacturers out there. So it’s useful to be able to create a custom MIDI map for your specific device. Let’s learn how to do that.

How to use a MIDI keyboard to control Ardour
Просмотров 903Месяц назад
A lot of MIDI keyboards come with faders, encoders, and transport keys. You can use those to control various aspects of Ardour. In this tutorial, let’s learn to enable a generic MIDI control surface and select the right predefined map for it.
Spllitting and joining notes in MIDI regions
Просмотров 530Месяц назад
You can easily split and join notes when editing MIDI regions. This helps create ostinatos and complex rhythms. Let’s learn how to do that.
Using cue markers

Both timeline and cue sequencing have their pros and cons. And thanks to cue markers you can have the best of both worlds.
Program trigger probability in cues
Просмотров 6227 месяцев назад
Trigger probability is how you can get Ardour to make happy little accidents for you to explore ideas. There are two ways you can use this feature: arbitrarily choosing between two follow actions or using a multi-jump. 00:00 - Intro 00:14 - Random choice between follow actions 00:56 - Multi-Jump
Program cue sequences with follow actions
Просмотров 6907 месяцев назад
With follow actions you can program the Cue sequencer to play a clip a certain amount of times, then automatically switch to a clip in a different ccue and play it a certain amount of times too. This way, you can program entire compositions from repeatable loops without ever touching the timeline. 00:00 - Intro 00:33 - Setting a follow action 00:49 - Type: Again 01:01 - Type: Reverse 01:14 - Ty...
Trigger types, legato, and cue isolate options for clips
Просмотров 9907 месяцев назад
Ardour provides several options that define how a clip is triggered, when it starts playing after you trigger it, and whether it responds to triggering the playback of an entire cue it belongs to.

Before launching a clip or a cue, let’s learn to load clips into trigger slots. There are several ways to do that.

The Cue window provides tools for non-linear sequencing where you trigger the playback of short repeatable audio and MIDI clips. Let's talk about tracks, cues, and trigger slots.
Ardour 7 : Ripple Styles
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.Год назад
The Ripple editing mode helps trimming audio and MIDI tracks by automatically moving content to the left to fill the gap once you remove a region or a range. Ardour has been providing this mode for many years, but now there are multiple styles of ripple editing, each designed with a particular use case in mind. #ardour #daw
Ardour 7 : Mixer Scenes
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.Год назад
Mixer Scenes allow saving multiple variations of a mix and switching between them with a single click. Anything that can be automated in mixer channels can be part of a mixer scene: fader and panner positions, record arm and monitoring states, mute/solo states, plugin settings etc. #ardour #daw #mixing

I have a Novation 61 SL MKII and it has a lot of faders, knobs buttons... and all are multifunction assignable! It's going to be a lot of work! It's already kind of hard figuring out what all I would like to do what with!🤯 The fact that I can do it on Linux, and without their proprietary Windows/Mac(🤮) app in Ardour is wicked groovy!🥳 Ardour sure is great!
Seems like fader/pan/solo/mute/arm for 8 tracks and transport controls could be a start. You can also probably "steal" from the existing Impulse 61 map that is kind of barebone. And yeah, Automap is not fun. You probably also want sticking with the Generic MIDI preset on the 61 SL (at least, Impulse had such a thing).
@@ardourdaw I'm probably going to make a few more task oriented ones. Thanks for suggesting some MIDI presets, the innards of these devices are often not much different, and they make so many freaking models, all with similar versions of the same software. No need to mess much with the keys (MIDI note values), accept for in addition to the 8 drum pads if needed (8 is not really much).
Thank you, excellent video!
Thanks, very much appreciated
Thanks for developing and teaching this beautiful open-source software. So glad to be moving into Linux music making, away from FL.
Thanks for these videos :) Greatly appreciated!
Thanks! I'm looking forward to seeing the video on custom MIDI maps.
Cannot wait!
Thanks, impatiently waiting for the next video ...
Excellent feature highlight! I'm excited to share more Ardour features. There's a lot to catch up on over the last few years!
Thank you
please make the notes sound when they are moved with the arrow keys :)
This is awesome, love the tutorials! Thanks!
Is midi editor window coming soon or inline editor forever?
It's a possibility (depending on a definition of "midi editor window"), but likely not soon (again, how does one define soon?).
prolly never if i had to guess. they really like the inline editor even though it overloads the work of the entire playlist and is harder to move around than a separate window would be.
Hi unfa, new to Linux and Ardour8. Found you here and need advice please. I was following a youtube lesson on installing ardour on the Linux Mint/Ubuntu distro. Followed the steps to prepare my system. Saw this video on first step setup and hit a wall trying to change Alsa to Jack. It froze on me when I clicked on Jack and went back to Alsa automatically. No response could only Force Quit. So you know, the lesson I watched, as one of the final steps had me purge qjackctl from my files, and install Cadence and Cadence-toolbox. Did this screw things up?? Thanks.
I recognize the voice of this narrator. She sounds jist like Jen Sincero. She has an awesome audio book on audible called "You Are A BadAss". Check it out.

good work
thank you for lollipops !! I'm trying out Ardour 8 in "demo" mode. If I'll stick with it, I'll definitely pay for the built package !
Hello, Paul. Please make the "MIDI editor" floating!
so... I'm a .NET developer (been for 10 years) and I can't figure out how to get the general midi instrument to show the midi editing view lol, can't say it's intuitive at the moment. I know it's user error, and I know I'll eventually love Ardour, going to stick with it. I want to ditch windows for Pop_OS, tired of seeing news and ads in my operating system. I'm exploring Pop and Ardour atm. I'll keep poking around.
just figured it out loooooooool. I accidentally double clicked while the up-down resize cursor was showing. Didn't realize how I did it at first, then accidentally resized it back down, then manually dragged it out. Makes sense now, so simple in hindsight, but like the video doesn't cover how to get the actual midi grid to appear. Time to sequence some space farts.
great work!👍
Love it!
Bravo! I can see our studio finally going full Linux if this keeps up.
Cool
The clip feature is getting better every time!
beautiful
And this folks is why - even if you use an open source software.... You DONATE! How can anything move forward at a satisfactory pace if you don't donate? Awesome job.
Extremely cool.
came on to linux. came on ardour

OK, I'm probably late to the party, but Is there a LIST EDITOR for typing in velocities and TABing to the next note? Is this already a feature. Most of the times I put in velocities they are not consisntly one value for multiple notes. Proportionaly, it might look something like this (say for eighth notes in 4/4): 4-1-2-1-3-1-2-1 But just applied to whatever velocity I assign to "1". Like this: 100-64-80-64-90-64-80-64 It would be SO helpful if this works somehow. Thank you again for your clear explanation. And thank you to all the active comment folks contributing their ideas.
Here are basic docs: manual.ardour.org/midi/midi-editing/midi-list-editor/ Double-click the first note's velocity, enter value, Enter to confirm, arrow down, Enter to start editing, enter new value, enter to confirm etc.
alsa provides drivers ... I am using a Roland Super UA audio-interface, it seems to be somewhat class compliant. Thing is, it only works with JACK. I don't quite understand why but, because JACK runs on top of ALSA, so where is the driver coming from. BTW, I compiled Ardour8 on Linux Mint 21.2, works well. It suffers more xruns than Reaper on the same system. Eventually I find out why ... Like always, great video unfa, thanks for all your time, dedication, and work!!
Thanks for this
Fantastic! Now - how about an option to disable scroll-editing velocity completely? :) Or do it so that you need to hover with a mouse over one of the selected notes to scroll-edit velocity. One of the most infuriating things for me working with midi in Ardour is that when I want to scroll through tracks, instead I'm constantly adjusting velocity f-knows where, because I forgot to unselect some note. It's really painful and annoying with larger midi regions.
Now in the git master branch, and in nightly builds available after 04:00 US Mountain time on Oct 23rd.
This IMO is one of the really big features of this release. I tried to implement a "get back to all last soloed tracks" feature but this was - for several reasons - problematic. Now this is simply solved by 'quick groups'. Great!
woohoo! 🍭
👍👍
very handy
I insist! awesome and thanks!!!
Absolutely spot-on!
This will be useful. Thanks!
I have a question: do it have a good support for pen tablets user?
Do you mean like Wacom, X-Pen, Huion etc.? What are your use cases?
@@ardourdaw Yes. I have a wacom. Long sessions work with a wacom feel more comfortable than work with a mouse. Maybe it's just me
@@muopmuopmuopmuop try ergonomical or trackball mouses. And rest of course, go to hospital if getting worse
🥰 Great work! Thank you very much!
How well is the pipewire support in late 2023? Im begginer devuan btw (openrc sway)
It supports Jack well, which Pipewire emulates. Your question really should be: how good is Pipewire's support for Jack in late 2023.
Awesome, great work! :)
Did they mention there is a quicker way to set multiple notes to a specific velocity? 1. Select notes 2. hit key "v" 3. enter numeric value and hit "return"
Thnak you so much for implementing this very useful feature. I appreciate it! 💯👍
Great! Thanks!
thanks!!!! & awesome!!!!
