I am so happy that you finally saw this! Voiceplay is phenomenal. They are a five member group too but the fifth man J None is serving time in the navy so they always give featured artists the center stage. The theater kids, full makeup and costumes most of the time. Geoff us the bass and has been known to go subharmonic quite often. I like that they do some edgier songs like Dream On, In The Air Tonight, Nothing Else Matters and Seven Nation Army. That’s only a few. I know you are going to enjoy them. Also Geoff has his own channel and clones himself so he can sing all the parts, he covers eight octaves. Thanks Nick!

For good reason, VoicePlay is known as "the theater kids of a cappella". Many of their videos include full sets, lighting, costumes, makeup - all the more impressive when you realize that with a few specialist exceptions, it's all done by them!
One thing to be aware of when watching VoicePlay videos - they're the oldest of the big 3 a cappella groups (Pentatonix, Home Free, and VoicePlay), having started in 1997 as 4:2:Five. And they've had a few member changes in the last several years, so who you'll see in a video is very dependent on exactly when that video was actually filmed. But the two members in the front on this video (Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci the bass, and Layne Stein the beatboxer) are original members, and Eli (rhymes with jelly, the bald one in the back) Jacobsen has been with the group since 2010, so they'll always be there. The two other most common members you'll see in older videos are Earl Elkins, Jr (high tenor and original member) and J. None (baritone).
The other two in this video, Cesar de la Rosa (newest member) and Ashley Diane (the featured artist) are both originally from Puerto Rico, which helped them in recreating some of the atmosphere of Encanto for the video. Ashley has been featured in some recent videos - If I Was a Rich Man/Girl, Running Up That Hill, as well as a number of VoicePlay mini's.
Geoff Castellucci, the bass singer, also has a solo channel that he started during the lockdown, since VoicePlay wasn't able to tour. If you like bass voices, he's got a great one - but he can also go surprisingly high for a bass, and features "clones" of himself to help out with the harmonies on his videos. His latest is I See Fire, from The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, and it's an amazing piece!

This is a good overview of the band. I would also add a 4th acapella Voctave which is known as a wall of sound. They have more members which allows them to sing up to 12 part harmonies at times, but no beat boxing for rhythm which they make up for with arrangements and rhythms in the vocal structure.

    • @joyfulyes
      @joyfulyes 9 месяцев назад

@@harve_0078I also like to include Voctave in the short list of top acapella groups. Love their sound, and their super high soprano is amazing.
Another cool thing is that many of the people in these groups are friends - Geoff and Tim Foust for example - and sometimes guest on each other's songs. The first song I ever heard by VoicePlay (Go the Distance from Hercules) featured one of the tenors from Voctave.

My favorite thing in the world is to watch someone react to Voiceplay for the first time, you did NOT disappoint!!
Bass - Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci, Beatbox - Layne Stein, Baritone - Cesar de la Rosa, Tenor - Eli (ellie) Jacobson, featured artist - Ashley Diane. Geoff and Layne have been singing together since middle school and professionally since 1997. Eli joined them in 2011, just before they rebranded as Voiceplay. Cesar joined in 2021 after they lost their high tenor for personal reasons and their baritone was recruited by the US Navy to sing with them.
Most arrangements are done by either Geoff or Layne, they usually switch off monthto month. They have no label, no manager, and thus have complete artistic control. Whoever arranges usually has does the storyboard, production, edit, camera, costume and makeup decisions. They work with makeup artists when they do anything out of the ordinary which is about half the time, and camera crew.
When Covid shut the world down, Voiceplay had to stop touring. They concentrated on perfecting their studio work. Layne's beatboxing is frequently several lines, stacked.
Because they are independent, they are funded almost exclusively by their Patreon members, almost 1,800.
Try their version of Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean 3, In the Air Tonight, or their most recent, Creep.
They will drop a new one in a week or two.
We can talk about Geoff next time. Subscribed in anticipation of more Voiceplay (and Geoff).

Welcome to the VoicePlay rabbithole! My reclist is getting unwieldy, so just to hit the _highest_ highlights of their recent work: Hoist the Colours, Nothing Else Matters, Valhalla Calling, In The Air Tonight, Seven Nation Army, Creep, and The Wellerman. Older but still incredible: Queen in Five Minutes, The Phantom of the Opera, This Is Halloween, Oogie Boogie's Song. This is not to disparage any of their many many other covers, whether full-length or shorts; their lineup and guest vocalists have changed over time and some may hit differently for one person than another, but these guys just don't make bad music. The same can be said of their bass singer, Geoff Castellucci's solo work in his own channel (top recs there are Ghost Riders In the Sky, Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold, I See Fire, Sixteen Tons and The Sound of Silence.) Liked and subscribed, hoping to see you react to more!

My favorite thing is to find people reacting to Voiceplay for the first time. Welcome to the most enjoyable rabbit-hole you will ever fall down! Let me introduce you to our favorite guys (if someone hasn't already) Left to right (in a zigzag) Cesar De La Rosa (Sassy guy with the crazy curly hair and the insane baritone/tenor voice) Geoff (jeff) Castellucci...(Human subwoofer, crazy bass voice, but he actually has a 5 octave range and does about 1/2 the arranging for the group. Also has a solo channel...and everyone is jealous of his hair) Ashley Diane (Featured artist..AMAZING voice, and they keep inviting her back to participate in other projects) Layne Stein (beatboxer, vocal voodoo that mere mortals can not comprehend, and is the other half of the Dynamic Duo of Arranging) and Last but far from least, Eli Jacobsen (pronounced "Elly) ..little bald rockstar tenor who could literally front any rock band and blow the roof off any arena. That's the guys! There's 4 regular members and the 5th spot is always a featured guest. (They were formerly a 5 member group, but for now are having fun as a 4some with guests) Enjoy the fun, deranged insanity that is Voiceplay!

Oh hi! Welcome to VoicePlay! The rabbithole is deep, broad, and well worth the tumble. You're going to hear things you've never heard before when you listen to them- they are, in my opinion, the most innovative a cappella group out there at the moment. And everything you see and hear comes directly from them- no label or other voices directing them. It's part of what makes them so appealing, because that freedom allows them to go directions a group with more commercial ties can't go. Layne Stein (vocal percussion) and Geoff Castellucci (bass) take turns providing the vocal arrangements for the group (although Eli Jacobson- the bald tenor- also arranges and has done so a couple times), and those two are underrated geniuses at the craft. I hope you'll be checking out more of their music. Just pick what interests you- their scope is broad enough that I guarantee you'll find something that really grabs your attention. If you just want to have your socks blown off, check out their cover of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters". If you want to feel deep, painful emotion, check out their cover of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me". If you want to listen to something with no lyrics at all- but with an unparalleled video (which they made themselves), then check out the classical piece, "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Edvard Grieg. Or if none of those appeal, just pick what you like. VoicePlay never disappoints.

VoicePlay are the theatre kids of a capella. They are so much fun, but also can be serious, and whatever they do it's special. Geoff, bass, and Layne, beatboxer, often sit at the front, - they're taller than the others :) Speaking of fiery chasms, Geoff's latest solo cover was I See Fire, from The Hobbit. Cesar de la Rosa and Ashley Diane are both originally from Puerto Rico , hence the ease with the accent.

Geoff and Layne also sit in front in a lot of their ACA top tens which are done live because they have to use the microphone pretty much right in the face. Geoff not only sings low, but he’s also quiet and pretty much has to eat the microphone for it to pick it up and Layne with his crazy beatboxing needs to be close as well. (And they are by far the tallest!)

  • @janetdw

Others gave you a brief history but I wanted to let you know you can also tell the older videos because Geoff has short hair😊.
In this one, Geoff was channeling Camilo who was a Shapeshifter in the family. That’s why the costume change. He switched from channeling Bruno with the deep dark voice to Isabella’s line and then back again. When you re-watch check out the expressions of the others when he switches. They are always worth a second, third or 10th rewatch. Especially with their more artistic or theatrical pieces there is almost always something new I catch and some of them I have watched probably close to 50 times!
The portion with the rose petals had to be filmed with everything going double speed so that when they slowed it down for the video the rose petals would be floating by rather than just blasting into their faces which is what really was happening🌸. To get the petals to move fast enough so they didn’t drop to the ground and also to get Ashley’s hair to flow like that they actually had to use not only a fan but a leaf blower!
Tomorrow they will be releasing their newest- What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor.😂😂😂. It is lots of fun!
When they did Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean 3 they featured a high school friend of Cesar’s, Jose Rosario Jr. It was one of the first truly theatrical pieces they did, and remains one of my all-time favorites. Jose is also a guest in the newest one. If you are in the mood for pirates, they also did a mini of Yo Ho, the song from Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland, and recently released a short of the Wellerman.
If you are still reading, I recommend that you check out this video of Ashley and Geoff in their matching outfits dancing. It is the second photo so be sure to swipe. So silly and yet so enjoyable. They weren’t only wearing matching blouses but wore matching pink shorts!

Thanks for your reaction! I just subscribed hoping you will do more reactions to them. They are very different than the other acapella groups Home Free and Pentatonix as they are the 'theater kids of acapella' and put so much into their whole production (Pentatonix has more of a current Pop music style while Home Free is more of a Country/Folk style). You seem to really appreciate the theater and production of this as well as the acapella and harmonies so I think this is a rabbit hole you will love. All of Voice Play's members and frequently featured guests are from Orlando Florida and have worked for Universal and/or Disney theme parks. Their Disney covers and Halloween themed covers are the best on the internet. They work without a record label or record contract by choice and do all of their own production in a studio owned by beatboxer, Layne Stein, and former baritone singer, Tony Wakim, so that they have complete control of their creative expression. For more Disney, check out "Hoist The Colours" from 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' or "The Little Mermaid Medley". If you like gaming, check out "Valhalla Calling" from Assassin's Creed or "Dragonborn Comes". If you like Rock music, you will be amazed at how well they rock out acapella in "Dream On", "Nothing Else Matters", "Carry On My Wayward Son", and "Warriors". One of their members, J None, left the group to join the Navy but comes back frequently while on military leave to perform with them. Voice Play has not replaced him with a permanent member so you will see different featured guests fill in so that may be confusing at first. Their guest performers are people they have known and worked with since high school, working at the theme parks, or local theater and night club gigs so you will get to know them and love them as part of Voice Play's extended family. I am looking forward to your Voice Play journey!

As others have said, welcome to the Voiceplay rabbit hole. It's a wild and crazy ride but well worth it. Personally, my absolute favorite acapella group. This group has made reactors speechless, made them throw and break headphones, made them get up and walk out because they just can't, and probably my favorite reaction, made them forget that they weren't wearing pants and have them get up and walk out (reactor was wearing boxers though so not completely bare). Everyone has made some great suggestions, and everything that you hear from them will blow you away, but one suggestion that is missing that I think is just phenomenal and emotional is their cover of the Halo theme song. The Charismatic Voice did her reaction with the composer and he was just enamored of their cover. Enjoy the ride!

The best thing about reactions to voiceplay or pentatonix is #1 - the look of astonishment as soon as they start singing and#2- the permanent grin that the reactor has for the rest of the video. And Nick was no exception lol. I think someone should count how many first time reactions to any of the big three acappella groups include the words"No Way!!" Congratulations on continuing your spiral into the Acappella world. Should we give him a chance to recover before we mention Home Free?
I would say that if your a fan of any one of those three that most likely you are a fan of all three, no matter which one you started with. Its hard to find a song from any of those three groups that doesnt just blow you away. I mean everyone has thier favorites but there arent any that arent at least awesome and there are some that literally change your life.
Great reaction Nick! (Subscribed as soon as i saw the look of joy on your face about 3 seconds into the song) welcome

If The Bass Gang could actually get together, I think they’d be putting out a lot more content and would make up the fourth. Personally, I'm in the camp that you pausing the video to react to things in real time is part of the fun! I've noticed a lot of reactors going straight through without pausing and then they miss things because they're still getting over something amazing that happened 5 seconds earlier. It also helps appease the copyright gods, so if you want to pause as you go, I say go for it!
And welcome to Voiceplay!! I hope you'll do more of their songs-as several people have already said, you really can't go wrong with any of their stuff. You'd also love Geoff Castellucci's (the bass) solo stuff; his arrangements and how he layers his voice over and over himself is next level.

Please go down the Voiceplay rabbit hole. You will not regret it. The cover vast genres. They do all the arranging, production, video, recording, editing, sets, EVERYTHING, THEMSELVES!Geoff, the bass, has a five octave range, Eli (pronounced El-eee ,the bald guy) is an insane rock tenor, Layne is inhuman with his beats (AND has an amazing voice) and Cesar has a beautiful tone quality to his voice and is the drama king!). They feature guests. This is Ashley Diane. She is with the Liberty singers at Disney. Voiceplay is described as the theatre kids of acapella. Watch more!!!!!

Voice Play. is insane. Geoff is the bass Layne is the percussionist. Eli (pronounced Elly) is the bald one and Cesar is the dramatic one with all the hair....the last positions filled with a featured artist that is not a part of the group. They are all very down to Earth and silly. They are definitely my favorite a cappella group.

Welcome to the VociePlay rabbit hole, and I can tell you it is a great rabbit hole to jump into. I have been obsessed with this group since last year and I haven't stopped. There is just something about this group that sucks you in, they are just super talented. The first time I heard them was from this cover as well and it is definitely a great introduction to them! As everyone else has said, they are the theatre kids of acapella, they just put so much time into all of the small details of their videos and it shows. I just love them so much, they are just the best. If your looking for recommendations of what to check out next, I would recommend their most recent cover of Creep by Radiohed. It is such a well done video and the arrangement of the song is done perfect. But that one is a bit emotional, so if you want something more upbeat I would check out their cover of If I Were a Rich Man/Girl. That is such a fun song and it always puts me in a good mood. Thank you for the great reaction and I look forward to seeing more VoicePlay!!❤

Adding my welcome to the carrot-laced VP rabbit hole. In my recs is a PTX reaction of yours that says you're a Queen mega fan. VP' s Queen in 5 Minutes is a must. Its a little older, and features Earl and J None who are no longer with the group (though J None guests frequently). It is so good, not just the music, but the story they use the music to tell. Other than that, yeah, check out everything everyone has said. Their new one coming out soon is a ton of fun!

Welcome to the Voiceplay rabbit hole! They just keep getting better and better! Anything you listen to is going to be phenomenal and they cover it all. As others have mentioned if you liked Geoff's bass, definitely check out his solo channel. A lot of times, especially recently, Layne (the beatboxer from Voiceplay) will run steadi cam and Eli (Voiceplay's rock tenor) will do the lighting for Geoff's videos. Kathy, Geoff's wife, is the production manager for Geoff and Voiceplay. They are more than friends; they're family.
Did you notice that when Geoff's costume changed it matched Ashley's? He was finishing her character's line and matched her pink shorts too. They had a fan for the rose petals but it wasn't doing the trick, so they used a leafblower, and then slowed it down in post. These guys are crazy, and fun, and amazing. Buckle up, watch out for carrots, and enjoy the ride! ✌️❤️🥕

This came up as a suggested video and it makes me happy. One of my favorite things in the world is when someone hears Geoff Castellucci for the first time. It's actually a video category called "Geoff Quakes". The beatboxer is seated next to him, Layne and he's just as much of a vocalist as and of the others. If you like Disney a capella covers may I suggest Oogie Boogeyman, also by Voice Play.

Without a doubt, voiceplay brings it to the table every single time. Welcome to the voiceplay blackhole.
They have a ridiculous array of genres they cover. And I feel they get more insane every time I see them. They feature various different artists from time to time so the line up can change depending on which video you watch. Recommendations include, but are not limited to: if I were a rich man/girl (more ashley diane), hoist the colors, the dragonborn comes, the little mermaid and moana medley, nothing else matters, and seven nation army. And that is just a few from them.
The bass (geoff castellucci) has his own channel. Recommendations include but are not limited to: Over the misty mountains cold and I see fire, house of the rising sun, shanendoah, and blackbird.
I would totally give you a parachute to go down this hole. However, it's best just to take the plunge. I wish you luck and look forward to your reactions. LOL.

I always love seeing people find VoicePlay for the first time. I'm subscribing so I can watch you fall into the rabbit hole into the wild, wacky world of VoicePlay! They are far and away my favorite.
Fun fact: VoicePlay, Pentatonix, and Home Free all were contestants in a TV show many years ago called "The Sing-Off" which was like an American Idol style show but only for a cappella groups. Pentatonix won their season. Home Free and VoicePlay were on the same season, and Home Free took the crown (VoicePlay was very close to winning).
Finally, if you're hooked on a cappella now, aside from these three that I mentioned, I LOVE LOVE Voctave, as well. Voctave is more choral, VoicePlay is theatre/rock, Home Free is country, and Pentatonix is EDM/Pop.

Welcome to Voice Play. Also, Disney liked this so much they hired them to do this LIVE at a special event. There IS a bad video of it somewhere on RUclips of the performance. Sadly, I can't support them on Patreon right now, but I HAVE seen them live (pre Covid) and they really DO sound this good live. I have heard that in order to do this without the layering that they did in the video they had to do some crazy vocal gymnastics. IF you can, I highly recommend becoming a Patreon of theirs. They are all really great people who treat their fans wonderfully. I also know you will get early access to their wok and other perks so you can record your reactions and have them ready for release after Voice Play does their reveal if you like. Valhalla calling will blow your socks clean off and my absolute favorite is Hoist the Colors. Enjoy.

The "Three Big" A Cappella groups on RUclips were all competitors on the TV Show "The Sing-Off." Pentatonix won for the season they were on (I forget which that was). VoicePlay and Home Free both competed on the fourth season, in 2014; But they had already been on RUclips since 2012, shortly after they changed their name from "4-2-Fine." They've always been the most experimental of the "Contemporary a cappella" groups, which is why I, personally, find them the most appealing. If you want to see their earliest lineup as "VoicePlay" (When they all had baby faces) I recommend "Water Bottle Drum Line" and the wonderfully surreal "A Crimpella."

It’s a great movie. Terrific moral and outstanding music. Just for background, the family has magical powers. Bruno is the prophet and of course no one likes what he has to say and so he’s become an outcast.
Isabella is the perfect golden child. Mirabel (wearing glasses) is the main character and she’s the only one who did not receive magical powers. It is her inquiries into Bruno that starts the main story and also why the song is being sung. Ashley plays both of those characters as well as Pepa who got married in a Hurricane.
Cesar and Eli sing parts of other members of the family. Layne does Dolores who can hear a pin drop and because she has such acute hearing whispers everything and that’s the feeling that he’s getting when he’s doing his a little rap.
Geoff is playing Camilo the Shapeshifter. He wore a poncho in the movie. He is one who likes to embellish his tales so Bruno ends up sounding much worse than he actually is. So when Geoff is portraying Bruno, that is the way Camilo portrayed him.
And later he shifts into Isabella to finish the rest of the lines that Ashley started This is why he’s dressed the way he is and why he flips his hair in the gently wafting breeze.

Glad you like them. Unlike other groups they are self arranged, produced, lighting, etc. Geoff's wife Kathy does costumes and managing. You will meet her in Golden Hour and a few others. But, she is mostly behind the scenes. You can read the notes and see it is all them. and often there is a tid bit at the end of the video so play it thru until the patron roll. Welcome. Also check out some live oldies.
