    I went there once and can confirm it was incredible. We actually managed to buy a deal "lunch for two for £60". We went there for two three-course meals (bargain I know!) and when they realised we were paying with a coupon, they did not treat us any differently (we were students so we were very poor).
    They gave us a pre-meal course for free, which was delicious! They never let our glasses of water get even half empty.
    Excellent service, could not recommend highly enough! Had a memorable time.

    For those of you who can’t understand why food like that cost so much it’s rather simple really:
    You have: what kind of plant/animal it is, where it came from, how long did it take to get to the restaurant, the shelf life (for example how long milk can last without spoiling, how long bread can last without going stale or getting moldy etc.)
    Then there is cheese which a lot is very pricey depending on what kind of cheese it is, where it’s from, etc. I remember my teacher, Chef Jessica McGee, had mentioned a kind of blue cheese called Roquefort, a kind of cheese from France where they make their cheese based off a story of a man who left his cheese in a cave called Roquefort-sur-Soulzon and came back almost a year later and tried the cheese only to think it was delicious and thus you have the Roquefort cheese you have today and it is STILL aged that way. You can’t get that kind of cheese anywhere else in the world. Like Champagne. If any place that isn’t Champagne France, tries to make Champagne it isn’t real Champagne unless it’s made in Champagne France. The same goes for Roquefort Cheese and New Mexico Hatch Green Chili, along with Russia’s Caviar which is from sturgeon from the Caspian Sea Kobe Beef which is straight from Kobe Japan, where they pamper and work out their cattle, feeding them and farming them up in the mountains to get that beautiful marbling with the fat and meat which will literally melt in your mouth when you take one bite!
    So you also have these products to account for. Caviar being shipped to the USA costs a fuck ton for the company that has their workers take time out of their day to go out to the sea and hunt for those fish eggs and then go pasteurize them, can them, and then ship them and then deliver them to the restaurant that ordered them which cost them a fuck ton of money. Plus the fish itself is Endangered so they also have to take that into account so if you want to eat real Caviar you need to pay the cash to do so!
    The price is there for both the company, the workers who worked their asses off for the education and the time they took to make that plate and for the restaurant itself to buy all those ingredients to make that platter.
    Food like the ones I mentioned are a pain in the ass to get and they cost so much because of the extensive time it takes to get them and make them. Hell there are food out there you can eat but if the chef isn’t skilled enough it will LITERALLY KILL YOU! No joke. Fugu is a type of Puffer Fish and is a delicacy in Japan but the fish has a Tetrodotoxin that is 1,000x more potent than Cyanide.
    Of course Fugu will cost you up the ass to order!!! That shit will kill you if the chef isn’t careful - speaking of which, the chefs can’t even think about preparing it unless they have over 5-6years of training and even then they still have to earn a certificate to be certain that they can make it. One mistake, and it’s over for both them and you!
    Plus chefs need to know how to make sure their environment is good to make food because if someone uses a knife that was cutting raw meat a moment ago to chop some clean fresh greens without cleaning that knife - well they just killed someone or simply got them sick.
    With all this information of course a Filet Mignon with a maple gravy and a glass of Pinot Noir is going to cost you around $30-50 if not more depending if there is more to the dish (I’m just going off the top of my head right now)
    I’m a Culinary Arts student if it wasn’t obvious. And trust me when I say it’s not just cooking. Hell fucking no. I had to take a test that if I didn’t pass I’d have to pay $60+ to take the week long class and study vigorously again just to try and take the test again. Serve Safe was a pain in the ass and I passed by the skin of my teeth just to show I can safely handle food and can serve the public at a high restaurant. And I’m still working my ass off.
    You learn about diseases, viruses, cross contamination, and more. It’s not just cooking. It’s also about nutrients, vitamins, micronutrients, macronutrients, age groups, health, how to fucking organize your refrigerator, how to sharpen a knife, how to safely handle knifes and so much more!
    You are paying for the product, to keep the restaurant open, the ingredients that went into it, and your own safety.
    Us chefs don’t have a stick up our asses, you all just don’t care about quality, your own safety, sanitization, and the ingredients. Take Culinary Concepts and Math, along with a Baking or Stocks Soups and Sauces and On Cooking, then take the time out of your day to complain about a $200 piece of Kobe Beef. Fucking try it.
    But you won’t. why? Because you have the long stick up your ass. You don’t think about what goes into the food on your plate. You don’t think about that shit until you do take the time to do so.

      When I'm eating at a high-end restaurant, the price is the last thing on my deciding factor because I KNOW I'm paying for far more than food. I go to enjoy the experience. So my humble opinion to ppl, don't go to expensive restaurants if you're broke. Spending $50-70 at a restaurant compared to $300-$500 at another restaurant is like comparing a Chevy Camaro to a Lamborghini Veneo. The difference is like cheese to chalk.

    As European myself (France is but a stone throw away) i live in the USA since 6 years now.
    It's not just the food you would go to places like this for, it's the total experience. You dress-up, you take your time to submerge yourself into that experience. An hour feels like 20 minutes, you forget about your rent, your "so so " job your worries. It's an experience that makes your day, extremely special and memorable.
    For people spewing their hate, is not just ignorance, it's also the lack of wanting to experience something unique and memorable. They are stuck in their daily open a jar and heat it up lifestyle, i for one do NOT envy you...next month my wife and i are going on a date (nice example) and we go to a place where they serve a 100usd steak. We are not rich (as you can tell) by any means, but we do save up money for making moments we share? As special as we can within our budget perhaps live your life to the fullest. Instead of spewing ignorance about something you clearly do not understand...

      A good point, but I think it's important to note that is your choice. You choose to value the experience the atmosphere, the memories made at a place like that - others don't.
      I, for one, am fortunate enough to have a wonderful job that pays enough I could eat at places like this quite frequently, but I wouldn't choose to do so - simply because I'd feel out of place and awkward beyond belief there, it wouldn't be a pleasant experience for me, and I was lucky enough to marry a beautiful woman who feels the same.
      Everyone values different things differently, everyone feels comfortable with different things. I don't believe people should hate places like this, because, as you very eloquently put it, it's not just the food; it's everything else, too, that you go for. At the same time, people shouldn't feel pressured to go to places like these, or like you're not 'important' if you don't go to places like these, do what makes you happy - if you want to go to somewhere like this I truly recommend doing it, having been to some before, they're truly wondrous places, but if you're not into that, don't feel like you have to go.

    If you learn to cook it, you can eat it. The thing I love the most is how simple some of these things are yet they are done so masterful and beautiful. You do pay for the labor and the skill as well as the food and service when you dine in one of these places. The nice thing is the skills needed to make something this tasty isn’t beyond reach. The sad thing is most don’t want to learn which makes a lot of skills a dying art.

    It seems like the majority in the comment section can't grasp the concept of fine dining. Complaining about portion sizes lmao it's an experience not a place to stuff yourself

    • @rymdalkis
      @rymdalkis 6 лет назад +176

      No, a majority in the comments don't have a stick up our arses and think that just because it's nice food it should also be overpriced and above all come in inadequate portions sizes. The restaurant's job is to feed you. That's what you pay for, and the more you pay the more you ought to expect to have your expectations met. What they're doing here is give the customers a tiny slab of food and say "that's all you'll get! Oh you want more? Don't be so uncivilized!". Good food doesn't have to come in child sized portions just because it's good, but people have come to think that just because it's fine dining it HAS to be insufficient

    • @danteregulus4588
      @danteregulus4588 6 лет назад +185

      you still dont understand the point of this restaurant. You experience several dishes as an enjoyment, its about getting surprised by not only the chef but also by the ingridient itself to experience what it can taste like. When you enter this restaurant you are beeing presented modern art. The purpose of this food IS NOT to extinguish your hunger. Its just an experience of taste. If the sizes would be larger you could not get threw many dishes so it would be pointless. Its pure luxury, not efficiency

    • @rymdalkis
      @rymdalkis 6 лет назад +45

      Some restaurants profile themselves to serve many small dishes to each customer. Most of these "fine dining" restaurants do not. And the purpose of food is and has always been to extinguish hunger. What makes it fine dining is that it simultaneously offers an experience in taste. But it seems like you've bought this whole bullshit idea that fine food HAS to come in small portions. It's just another ploy to get the customer to pay more for less
      Edit: this video sums it up pretty neatly ruclips.net/video/JvsWibR_nsk/видео.html

    • @danteregulus4588
      @danteregulus4588 6 лет назад +22

      I didnt "buy" anything, in fact im no fan of this. I live in bavaria and here, if you get a plate, your food is about to fall off. Also I'm doing plenty of sports therefore I'm eating huge loads and there could be nothing worse for me to imagine beeing served a baby dish.
      I am not a customer of this concept AT ALL, I dont see myself ever paying for that. But I understand the aspect of enjoyment behind it. I know that there is something like a "tour" you can buy with 20 people who sit on a table and eat themselves threw 40 dishes somwhere in america. And you know what? That doesn't sound too bad. I can imagine that It's realy hard and requires some defining skills to craft so much small yet complex dishes. I see it as a form of art.
      In all honesty, for that one reason Id not visit any fine dining at all before checking on theyr sizes in the first place. If you make a quick call and ask how much steak you actually get when u pay 120$ dollar, and it turns out to be only a handfull you skip it.
      EDIT: I have actually seen that video before and I was thinking about it, its hilarious

    • @rymdalkis
      @rymdalkis 6 лет назад +6

      Good to find someone else who doesn't buy in to the concept. Sadly, not many of these fancy restaurants do serve enough tiny meals for you to get full. They usually go with 1 appetizer in the shape of an olive on a piece of dry biscuit, 1 main course consisting of two and a half bites and then some dessert that's not even sweet. And each of them cost at least $150

    • @gandaruvu
      @gandaruvu 7 лет назад +42

      VtOL Wariors then you don't understand how a dinner course work. The point of a course is not just to have many different kind of food at the same time, but each meal was design to work together with the rest of the course.
      Also, restaurants like this don't have problem with patrons. Rather have not that many customers who understand fine dining, than a bunch of who prefer buffet over flavour.

    Cried watching and listening to this. His passion is magic. . . . If you do not mirror what he has inside, stay away from cooking and serving food and leave it to others who do. ;). . . I have no ambitions to be a chef for the public, but I do cook with this inside me also, and when I serve what I make and present, people say "wow!" and "so many flavors!". . . . "man I didn't even think I was hungry and it's just GONE!" (he slurped it up, but initially took it out of my hands from politeness). "This is GOOD!". . . . . . And it's all said with body language, as if their palates have been assaulted with flavors they love. . . . It's an amazing experience to have that kind of feedback. . . . And that kind of feedback has got to be part of what fires up Gordon. . . . . That is what I saw here, and I suppose why the emotion.

    I remember 31 St James in the 90's , which I used regularly. That later became Petrus for a while with Marcus Wareing in the kitchen. It was always excellent. Ramsey would turn up sometimes before service. Ramsey seemed a bit more accessible to his customers then, until TV stardom turned his brains to vichyssoise, like all celebs'. Followed him to Claridge's , which was my local back then. Yes, I am showing off. Only visited the current Petrus once some time ago. It was excellent, of course. I can honestly say that every visit I have ever had to a venue connected to Ramsey has been amazing. Worth every pound spent over many years.

    Man oh man. You can only share the experience of a top-tier restaurant with people that have cut through the BS and decided to visit a couple of good ones BEFORE forming an opinion. The last time I visited a top restaurant I got stuffed. They served us 6 courses so the food was plentiful... Mind you, many people like overeating so I'm not sure how much it would seem to them. But it was definitely more than enough for us.

      Yea, that's what people don't seem to understand. The portions we eat on a day to day basis are too much. Even the "skimpiest" fine dining course experience should be a full meal, even If it doesn't stuff you.

      I almost agree, but there's no point in eating something that doesn't make you full.

      People eat too much, generally. We don't need a lot to get what we need.

      Sure you do. Maybe not you specifically, but sometimes people need to be told wahts best for them. Theres a reason obesity is so high in the US and many other parts of the world. You can choose to ignore research at your own loss, if you want, but whatever.

    yeah the portions are small, but what ppl fail to recognize is that most of gordons restaurants serve 5 course meals -thats a soup, entree, main course, cheese, and desert- so when all is said and done, its a good amount of food.

    I've been fortunate enough to dine at several Michelin Starred Restaurants (4)… and while I'm sure that I must appreciate how this was infused with that, and how this shines through, and the delicate nature of this compliments that.... and after dropping boat loads of money... I've always left with a smile, and looking for the closes hamburger joint.

    heres an idea for gordon's personal youtube:
    "Beginners Guide to Cooking" as a series.
    personally, im terrified of cooking, because i dont know what im doing. so it would be amazing to see a seasoned chef give a basic rundown of things like meat times, what seasonings and spices give what flavors, ect.
