The biggest week link on these amps is the tube PCB. Every time I get one, any signs of pcb damage I remove the board and point to point to tube sockets. I’ve lost count how many failures this amps have presented to my workshop. I also correct the bias.
As a new Subscriber, I find these videos fascinating. I love the technical side of sound. I’m not a guitarist, I just love great tones and music. I used Peavey equipment for my Simmons SD1s and Yamaha drums. That was before I lost all my kit to my divorce.
I have a V1 green board blues jr that I modded a bit based on the "Bill M" mods. Adjustable bias, coupling caps/tone stack caps, and fixing the reberb are an absolute must IMO and make it a whole new amp. Also upped the preamp B+ a bit and did the sparkle and presence mods. With a sweet old JAN 5751 in V1 and through a V30 or EVM-12L (external cab) that amp is a total sleeper.
1:23 best JJ tubes commercial and I can say that, I live in country where they are made 😂 actually played gig in area they are made and every second villager worked at tube factory it was crazy night 😂😂😂
What mods do you do/did you do to the Pro Junior? There’s a lot of material on moddinh the Blies Junior, but not much on the Pro Jr. - would be a great video! 😎
Had the same problem with same power tube in my ProJr IV, went to a friend, he did… something and also re-biased, seemed to be too high. Now really sounds incredible!
I have a couple of Blues Jrs, a couple of Re-issue Deluxe Reverbs a Princeton Reverb, a Vibrolux Reverb and I have to say my Pro Jr is a Great Sounding amp I lean on quite a bit in the studio.
Exactly the noises my Belair amp made before one tube redplated. Ironically, pulling the tubes out and putting them back in to clean the pins and to put my bias probe on - that same tube the glass broke. Ever since replacing, no issues since.
I had a mid 2000’s Pro Jr for years, I kept it stock and it was the most one dimensional sounding box, but it was loud and small. Sold it and never looked back.
No joke about el84s. I use JJs in my Morgan, am on pair 1 of a matched quad with one older pair of emergency spares, and managed to get a matched quad of Sovtek online last week for about the same price I payed for the JJs last year. Fingers crossed they're more available when I wear out what I have but thankfully I'm set for a good while
They will be available sometime this month. Tubes should be coming out of Russia sometime this week. Don’t forget there’s trillions of 6BQ5/EL84 tubes out there still in old 1960’s console stereos, record players and table top radios. If everything got really bad, rewiring the sockets for a substitution tube is an option.
I'm crossing my fingers that some western tech manufacturer will take notice of the tube shortage and start producing them again. I know they aren't used in much other than amps anymore so it's a slim chance but we can hope.
Western Electric down in the South says they will expand operations from their 300B tube to fill the needs of guitar players. Only thing is, they make a high quality tube, so we aren’t going to pay Shuguang/Reflektor prices probably similar pricing to these recently jacked up prices. But at least you know your fellow Americans will be employed!
Nice fireworks! Except that it's not the 4th of July, it's April Fool's day! (Song of the Day: "April Fool" by Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane, with Eric Clapton on Dobro; from the charming "Rough Mix" album. R.I.P., Ronnie, also known as "Plonk").
@@PsionicAudio It sounds like a small tube amp should to my ears. You buy these things to crank them and get overdrive out of all the tubes. That’s why I like my collection of Deluxe models. Yeah, they’re loud still, but an 80-100 watt amp overdriven would break the glass in my studio.
Always enjoy your videos and thanks for sharing. My two cents: I don’t really care for the sound of this particular amp as I’ve definitely heard better pro juniors. Might just be how the sound was recorded. Regardless It still sounds to bright for my ears. Tone is subjective as we all know.
Is that a Bennett Music Labs, Bruce Bennett guitar? I’ve had a Bennett amp and a distortion pedal. Waiting on Bruce to build me a new amp; great guy with a lot of knowledge.
Nice to watch someone at work who knows what they are doing. Interested in the guitar, it looks very like my Patrick Eggle New York. I'm not familiar with Bennett guitars, are they anything to do with the Samick Greg Bennett guitars. It looks a little too workmanlike for the Samick range.
This was one actually made by Greg Bennet. Not one of his Samick designs. Someone later shoehorned in the HB. Would have had a P-90 originally. It was a pretty cool guitar after the rescue. Well made. And I don't know what model - couldn't find any like this on Reverb completed listings.
I'm always irritated when I see a single-sided PCB in an amp. A double sided-board with plated through holes would be very much more reliable with a very small increase in price.
It's always fun watching a guy work who is a master at his trade. Thanks for the superb content!
Thanks Jim!
i love the pro jr. i used two of them into a stereo 4x12 mesa cab. instant rock and roll.
I love my pro junior IV. The improved volume control makes this amp versatile and great overall.
I bet the owner/player was really pleased with that amp. Sounds better than an expensive 57 Champ.
"Pre-Putin prices". Clever phrase. Probably come into common usage.

Light show was pretty sweet! I had to watch it in slow speed.
Watching that tube was pretty cool lol. I really wish i could do what you do...youre amazing , i learn alot here

Hey there! That was quite the light show! In the end it sounds like a right raunchy little setup.
Man, that one 'crunches' better than any Fender I ever heard!
Great sounds spilling out of “The Friends of Lyle’s” rig!

They definately sound better after you finish doing your thing to them.

Yeah it’s got a lot more gain! That’s a pretty hot little Pro Jr!
I originally had a 12AY7 in this. I wasn't going for quite so much fire breathing. But I don't have one handy right now.

Man, when that tube blew up haha. Awesome vid, subbed \m/,
Jah Rastafarai! Thought you would break out some Peter Tosh for the guitar.
the pro junior seem to not have the spring retainer on the power tubes, did you remove it? is it advisable to remove it to reduce spring rattle?

Exactly
For an amp that size it sounds great

What mods do you recommend for the pro junior?
At 3:45 I spit coffee everywhere.
Do you prefer the pro Jr. to the blues Jr?
Neither in stock form. I can make either do cool things but as they come from the factory I say no thank you.
@@PsionicAudio Any relatively (non-top secret) basic tips? Pretty good with an iron, but this is out of my wheelhouse!
What 10” speaker would you recommend for this amp I’m thinking the Jensen p10r
I just added a used p10r and to my ears, it sounds awesome. Much better than the stock speaker, but I have the SE version.

G10 greenback. I’ve tried that and the Jensen alnico. Greenback is a clear favorite, especially with some gain.
Pre Putin prices,nice one.
Purple haze.

pre Putin prices Lol
pre-Putin prices on Russian tubes!
6:16 Correction: Pre-Biden prices.
Keep that shit off here.
Gain mods sound fantastic!
Remember though, the Deep State are the ones in control.
