    This has got to be my favorite video on RUclips. The sheer complexity of the engineering and the application of a RC JET TURBINE to make thrust as compared to conventional prop and gas engine used with a paraglider just stuns me with amazement. One of these days I will do this, it's just a matter of getting 2 turbines with around 40-50lbs thrust. That or I'll just revert to the electric paramotor idea lol

    When I saw the airfoil my first reaction was disappointment. Not a 'true jetpack'. But after watching him fly... that was flipping incredible! The low to high feeling sounds a lot like my experiences with 1,000 cc sport bikes.

    • @RoachMcToast
      @RoachMcToast 9 лет назад +2

      No, Rossy's jetpack has wings. My dream is one where the jetpack is something you can walk around with, shortcut to the 50th floor rooftop. Boba Fett, rocket man style. And while this is quite a few steps off...one problem fixed at a time. Troys pack is quite small, especially when you compare it to everything else. The amount of thrust he gets from such a small pack is already huge progress. I have no doubt one day a Fett style jetpack will exist, I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping its within 10-20 years.

    How long can it go on one tank?
    Also one has to get exited when you think about this thing, slowly improving it, slowly cutting back... first its a chute. Then its a slightly smaller chute. Then its a hanglider/wing... Then who knows!
    As of now, I can certainly understand where the "lel its like paragliding" crowd comes from, but you guys do realize that part of innovation is taking baby steps, right? Again it may be attached to a parachute now, but that doesn't always mean it will be!

    • @ghostgunace
      @ghostgunace 9 лет назад +7

      ***** Torque has to do with rotational motion. If you are trying to rotate something and it is hard to do so, you need to exert more torque to rotate it. If anybody has a better explanation correct me.

    • @thetruthrover
      @thetruthrover 9 лет назад +2

      thrust

    • @TroyHartman
      @TroyHartman  9 лет назад +4

      Stewi1014 Good info. A couple of things I believe to be wrong though:
      "the rotating fans create huge amounts of torque" - I don't think there is any torque within the jet engine since everything is driven by pressure in the combustion chamber, and not direct drive.
      "torque is simply not a factor in anything that is done in the aviation industry" - this I know for certain is incorrect. Torque is the reason helicopters have tail rotors.

    • @thetruthrover
      @thetruthrover 9 лет назад

      Stewi1014 I did not compare or equate thrust with torque. I was pointing out that thrust would be a more accurate word to use when speaking of trying to get huge testicles airborne.

    • @TroyHartman
      @TroyHartman  9 лет назад +9

      Stewi1014 Ah of course, the turbine to compressor drive would have to produce torque.

    As usual in America , efficiency is not the concern. Flying at 40 mph ,(18 m/s ) yet the jet pack exhaust flows at 4 or 500 m/s , it is a nonsens.
    The propulsion efficiency is : (2/(1+ 500/18 ) = 0,07 ..... Only 7% of fuel is used for thrust ... 93 % is for barbecue heating.

    • @TroyHartman
      @TroyHartman  10 лет назад +4

      Correct, efficiency is not the concern. The goal was to achieve high relative speeds (much more than 40 mph) by exceeding a wing loading of 2.0. This is made possible by the massive thrust-to-weight ratio, low drag, and thrust vectoring capability. No other current propulsion device can come close to achieving this goal. I definitely was not going for a flying Prius.

    • @BOOOZB
      @BOOOZB 10 лет назад +1

      *****
      How much more ( than 40mph ?) and wing load 2 .. what is the unit ? Grain / square fathoms ( Avoir du poids or Troy , US or Imperial ?) . Sorry,the US units always make me laugh. I didn't understand the actual goal = A sail -used as a wing - can't be a lo drag device , Please could you explain me this flight goal ? Or you mean that thrust is twice the weight ??! I don't believe that what I have seen can make it ,whatever the names given ,such as" kinetic jet pack". It looks like a Lukas product ..
      Sorry for my joking but , I am interested in this test .

    • @TroyHartman
      @TroyHartman  10 лет назад +2

      LEBLEU JULES It can fly at 60 mph with this airfoil, but a smaller one (lower drag) allows 80+. Considering how portable the device is and the short takeoff/landing distance (VTOL in the right conditions), these are good speeds. The 2.0 W/L is lbs/sqft… 9.8 kg/sqm.
      It certainly won't change the world, but it's been an exciting and rewarding project.

      @BOOOZB 10 лет назад

    • @Slemoster
      @Slemoster 7 лет назад

      Rudders won't work. Rudders require airflow and VTOL doesn't provide much of that. Thrust Vectoring would be a must but the primary method of "Steering" would be from his own body weight. When the device carrying you weighs less than you do, your own body weight can influence the direction of thrust.

    • @TroyHartman
      @TroyHartman  9 лет назад +1

      Dito Honestly, neither of us will see commercial use. Jetman requires an expensive helicopter ride to altitude each time, making it purely an expensive sport. A damn cool sport too. I am working on a way to eliminate the need for the helicopter. It's very similar in a lot of ways to what he is doing. This parachute-jetpack flight was simply a test step, and I don't plan on doing it again.

    I don't know why this guy hasn't made is own iron man armor and changed the way the jetpack is controlled using vector and horizon control he wouldn't need a parachute then he'd just do vtol methods to take off and land.

      if he can make something like this he can make a suite of light weight armor.

    • @wynarok2924
      @wynarok2924 10 лет назад +1

      that's not true. The fact that he's using the parachute is because he NEEDS it to be light enough to take off. with this, moving forward let's him move him, be only needs force in 1 direction. With a suit of armor he'd need enough force to move forward and up at the same time, and enough constant force pushing him up to counter gravity. that's a LOT more power being used. And rather than being lighter, the suit would be heavier. even a light suit would be heavier than no suit at all.

      +Caston Young it's completely possible the reason people don't do it is because it's lunacy, the metals that are used to make the the RC jet thing are not made to the type of tolerances that are safe. These guys are playing with a bomb most of the time it. the percentages this guy are playing with is Ludacris. unless they're using electric motors and then it's just fake

    How could it be as dangerous as he makes it out to be, if he has a parachute the whole time? If the jetpack malfunctions or fails in any way he will just parachute safely to the ground, and not even have to worry about the chute failing to deploy as it is already pre deployed upon takeoff... This guy seems like such a dramatic wuss.

    • @stimpynexus1327

      MulberryMurderMafia Erm... dude... there are MANY things that could go wrong, you're sitting with immense weight, heat and unexploded fuel on your back, it's basically bomb if you think about it. Furthermore, one could make a mistake, lose control and slam into the ground if you apply too much power.

    • @LoneCoolBeagle
      @LoneCoolBeagle 8 лет назад +2

      +MulberryMurderMafia You're an idiot. The parachute is what allows him to actually fly and control his flight. The jetpack just provides him with the force to stay in the air.

    G'day,
    I gave this a dislike, because it's a ridiculous feat of industrious Futilitarianism.
    A Twin Turbojet-powered Parachute is about as practical and useful as Tits on a Bull, or an attempt to genetically-engineer an Arsehole which also functions as an Elbow-Joint.
    Mind you, I made my own First Solo in the "8Hp, 1975, Red-Baron Skycraft Scout..." (search YT for that Title to see it hanging in a Transport Museum), so I've flown something worse than the 1903 Wright Flyer...; but what this Dysfunctional Hybrid of in the Video reminds me of most is the Dickhead who put a pair of Gas Thrust-Jets onto the corners of a Rogallo Hang-Glider way back in the 1970s, with an LPG Bottle on his Backpack..., and ehrn he tried to fly it the Jet-Thrust on the A-Frame versus the Wing's Drag caused it to Pitch-Up, Stall, Tailslide, and then crash backwards, whereupon the Dacron hit the Red-Hot Jetpipes, ignited, and he *cooked his sorry Arsehole to a Crisp* !
    I predict that if you ever fuck up either Taking-off or Landing with the Engines going, then you'll be lucky if you burn badly enough to die there on the Day ; because if they get you to a Hospital after the Parachute burns draped all around you, then it could take you Weeks or Months to finally come out feet first...
    Seriously, this thing is a really silly idea which has been quite well built, but it still isn't remotely worth doing...
    And, to think that there were people who thought Paramotors with Propellers looked "Questionable"...; this thing looks as if it was built by a Madman, who was narrowly-foiled, in his attempt to construct an Infernal Device...!
    ;-p
    Ciao !

    • @TroyHartman
      @TroyHartman  8 лет назад +5

      +WarblesOnALot Fair enough... but, there is more to this. It was just a test step for something else, and I've never done it again. I agree it's completely impractical. You will appreciate what I have coming next, I know you will. It's going to be a game changer..

    • @WarblesOnALot
      @WarblesOnALot 8 лет назад

      *****
      Well said mate, you took that very well..!
      I'm glad you only did it the once, it looks as if it needs perfect Weather, as well as for everything to go right, and then to have lots of luck, in order to be able to make a safe flight...
      As a general rule, Parachutes are pretty good at flying slower than a Hang-Glider, and to fly most fuel-efficiently at those Airspeeds involves using the biggest Propeller which can be fitted to the Aircraft consistent with Ground-Clearance, and driving it with a small lightweight (high-Rev'ing) Engine, via a big Reduction-Ratio to keep Tip-Speeds below 660 Ft/Second at full Throttle, while multiplying the Torque at the shaft of said big Propeller, to engage and displace a relatively Massive Airmass, albeit fairly slowly, as compared to a small fast-turning Direct-Drive Airscrew cutting a little high-speed screaming loud hole in the Air, or a Turbojet spinning a tiny little fiery-Tornado...
      As a general rule of thumb, Parachutes are good for about 1/10th of the Airspeeds which Turbojets are worth using to achieve..., so a Turbojet Parachute is interesting, but unrepeatable...
      So, maybe instead, if you could cobble-up a 10 Kw Electric Motor with a big Propeller, a Backpackload of Lithium-Ion Batteries & a Charge-Controller so that Flexible Solar Panels on the top surface of the Parachute Canopy can extend Battery-Life while Aloft (and/or recharge for the next flight while spread on the Ground after Landing ?)...; you could put yourself at the forefront of Zero-Emissions Sustainable Flight, instead of being "stranger than the Jet-Powered Waco Biplane" ...?
      Have a good one,
      ;-p
      Ciao !
