  • In this series we are looking at the story of Baal from the Ras Shamra texts found at Ugarit. Baal is one of the main Canaanite gods whom Israel was tempted to worship in the Hebrew Bible alongside their pagan neighbors. The more we know about the Baal myth, the more we recognize when the Biblical authors use imagery associated with it and what Scripture proclaims about the TRUE “rider on the clouds”, YHWH!

1 kings 18: 27 At noon Elijah began to make fun of them. “Pray louder!” he said. “If Baal really is a god, maybe he is thinking, or busy, or traveling! Maybe he is sleeping so you will have to wake him!” 28 The prophets prayed louder, cutting themselves with swords and spears until their blood flowed, which was the way they worshiped. 29 The afternoon passed, and the prophets continued to act like this until it was time for the evening sacrifice. But no voice was heard; Baal did not answer, and no one paid attention....

I grew up a Christian and always thought it was silly to worship something you made yourself out of wood or stone. Just like Jeremiah 10:3-5. But then I learned that very real demons (fallen angels) were being represented by those images, and they were playing false gods. Now I can understand why the pull and enticement into idolatry over and over for Israel was so strong. These demons granted favors in exchange for worship, just like they do today.
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12

True. Many people think these "gods" didn't exist, that there weren't real spirit beings being worshipped by these ancient people. The ancients weren't stupid. They wouldn't have wasted their time with imaginary beings if they knew they didn't actually exist or didn't get anything out of it. The fact is, these beings do exist, and things were quite different back then from today. The fallen spirits made themselves known to mankind much more openly and frequently back then than they do today. Everything changed with the Resurrection of Christ. Death was defeated and the demons were bound. The Lord said He saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. This was in the context of Him giving His disciples power over the spirits. We now live in a world where the demons are by and large bound and unable to work exactly as they once did in ancient times before the Resurrection. The Lord does allow some demonic workings to occur, but it is nowhere to the extent that it was back in the OT.

When Moses presented himself to Farao, their magicians replicated almost every miracle that Moses showed to them. Moses, by the power giving to him by God, transform his staff into a snake and the Farao's magicians did the same (one example). There were fantastic and supernatural things going on back there from both sides. This is why I agreed with your comment. People nowadays think that the ancient kings from Israel were just stupid in abandon Got (I mean, they were) but it was not for nothing.

So if Ugarit maintained the Baal mythology, the same Baal that the Phoenicians introduced to North African Carthage and the Sabaeans of Yemen.

Ba’al is a complex word. It means husband, lord, and an academically uncertain god. Carthage primarily worshipped Ba’al Hammon. Lord Hammon. Hannibal worshiped Ba’al Melqart, Lord Melquart, a less popular, but very powerful god.
There’s a lot of debate about if there ever was a “Ba’al” deity. In the Hebrew, most mentions of Ba’al are tied to a city with a known deity, or it says “the Ba’als”, as in a pantheon.

One time, he asked Abraham I believe to sacrifice his son to see if he was willing to and Abraham was prepared but God stopped him and spared his son and provided him with a goat in his sons place. It was to see how willing he was to be obedient to God and put his trust in him and Abraham put God first.

People will often quote the King James Bible Matthew 6:24, "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon." But they read this as if there were only once Prince of Hell. Mammon is certainly a Prince of Hell in the sense of accursed finances. But there are actually 7 Princes of Hell -
Lucifer, Leviathan, Azazel, Asmodeus, Belphegor, Mammon, Beelzebub,
...each representing one of the Seven Deadly Sins.
Lucifer somehow became Satan by various means depending on who you talk to. Some
Hebrews say Lucifer volunteered to willingly become Satan at God's request. Other Christians say Lucifer rebelled against God, indirectly fulfilling God's Will by rebelling against God's Will.

      Lucifer/Pride 3:31 - Beauty Profiteering
      Mammon/Greed 4:33 - Money Profiteering
      Asmodeus/Lust 5:32 - Sex Profiteering
      Leviathan/Envy 7:08 - Narcissistic Profiteering
      Beelzebub/Gluttony 8:25 - Obesity Profiteering
      Satan/Wrath 9:40 - War Profiteering
      Belphegor/Sloth 10:59 - Lazy Profiteering
I suppose this is the perfect moment to remind us of George Carlin’s 1972 "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" monologue.
[1] The words, in the order Carlin listed them, are: "shit", "piss", "fuck", "cunt", "cocksucker", "motherfucker", and "tits".
Italians call it 'sacramentale'. Yet Nietzsche’s lack of faith may have resulted in no support when he brilliantly pulled away the illusions of all philosophy.
Unlike Nietzsche, I would be led by the Spirit to say it is time to, “Let our souls magnify the Lord” -- and realize there are no borders, especially when we blow the Holy Ghost into the sails of another's soul, much like the Virgin Mother of God.

Isn't much simpler to say that the ancient Hebrews were Canaanites and YHWH was a more southern god ( child of El) and Ba'al was a northern brother? The northern tribes of Israel are the ones in constant contact/conflict with the Baalists. The southern tribes Judah and Benjamin stay more loyal to YHWH. It also helps that the Assyrians came from the north, so the northern tribes took the brunt of their assault. This seems parsimonious to me.

You’re 100% right. This entire subject reflects identity politics and rivalries rather than spiritual truth or righteousness. That realization can either rid you of your faith, of confirm it for you, but the likelihood that it will ruin it for you means that they are never going to inform the public about it. The reality is that the average practitioner wants to read allegorical and moral cultural stories that make them feel good about their religion, not to necessarily learn the underlying truth.

yeppers, except Yahweh was just adopted into the Canaanite pantheon, and then slowly overtook and replaced Ba'al worship for the elites who lived/settled in Judah. (and they could've had a mix between the Canaanite tradition and the Egyptian traditions when they moved into the land of Judah )
But after the northern kingdom fell and you had all the Canaanites in Israel " I mean Israelites" flee south to Judah.. then you see the intermingling of traditions and ultimately Yahweh worship won favor with the elites, as most of the people were still pagans worshipping ba'al and ashera.

If the DCW and the portions of Deuteronomy 32 are correct, handing over the rule of nations to heavenly beings, why wouldn’t those heavenly beings replicate what they know from the heavenly realm and then want the same worship they saw YHWH get from their portions?

Or... authors of the time imposed their local culture onto their speculations about the cosmos. Why would an omnipresent, omnipotent entity need to rely on messengers/angels? Like in Genesis 20:21, God has only heard second-hand about what's going on in Sodom and Gomorrah, so he needs to go down to Earth himself to learn the truth. The authors are writing about a king in the sky, literally, based on their own cultural assumptions.

How would any two people from different nations understand each other in ancient times? One or the other had learned the language of the other. Much later in the OT, the Assyrians come to siege Jerusalem and taunt the Israelites in their own language. The leaders of Jerusalem ask the Assyrian to speak in his own language instead of Hebrew because they could understand that language. He refused because by speaking Hebrew, he wanted to cause fear in the people of the city.
Abraham, a man of Ur of the Chaldeans, moves to Canaan and speaks to the locals. He knew their language or they knew his or both.
I don't think David or Goliath knowing the language of the other is a problem when their nations obviously interacted with each other even if usually through war.

A sacrificial tower was built under Nimrod's leadership. The effort was to get back in touch with those fallen spirit powers that had previously interfered with the human race and led humanity to the situation where God decreed the flood. At the Tower of Babel, God not only scattered the languages, but abandoned the nations to these fallen gods; He chose Abram as a "fighting instrument" for himself in the second batch, which the Old Testament tells about; The people of Israel and Jerusalem. We live in the "time-out" of this cosmic battle now, when the Gentiles have the opportunity to seize the salvation offered by God, before we enter the last seven years, when more than half of those living here will perish. Baal is just one manifestation of this demon-worshiping choice of humanity.

Dojo made me think it was just Eastern philosophy, and my time is limited, so I'm looking for other things. Then--- the toys in the background made me roll my eyes HARD! Sorry, but I'm an old Gospel Preacher who thinks there is way too much nonsense taking the men of the Church away from God's Word, and I've seen many a young man with a promising career in ministry waste his energies on the "myths and endless genealogies" of the comic book universe. But, I gave you grace and watched to the end.
Brother, forgive my judgmental heart! My prejudices almost made me miss an EXCELLENT lesson on the parallels of these ancient texts. You certainly did your due diligence! Showing these side-by-side is a great way to teach and the glossary of terms at the outset really clarified things that I have often wondered about, but haven't investigated myself. This is only the first of your videos for me and I'll be clicking on part 2 next. But if the rest of your content is like this, you are certainly doing the Lord's work and have earned a subscriber.

I really don't see the supposed parallels to the Bible. I have read again and again that "scholars" believe all these gods existed in Canaan and eventually YHWH became the main God. I notice there is no YHWH in this story, suggesting that YHWH really did come through Moses to replace the others as the Bible describes.

great series, I was a fundamentalist Christian for 40 years willing to die for my beliefs even though I didn't really know what was in the Bible and our family never went to church
Then after I started attending church regularly for 3 yearsincluding the old testament..
I realize the stories didn't actually read how I remember learning them that led to lots of questions and questioning the decency of the Old Testament God
And that led me too well over 3000 hours into deep scholarly study of the ancient world archaeology and linguistics.
And learning about the ancient Sumerians, Akkadians, etc etc. And all their ancient flood and creation myths as well as from Assyria, Babylonia, Ugaretic texts and learning about Zoroastrianism and Greek philosophy etc etc
is precisely what led me to become an atheist.
from knowing that the book of Daniel and revelations were basically talking about Antioch as the fourth and the Roman Empire etc And how they writers of the Hebrew Bible just adapted their ancient traditions into their own new belief system and attributed with the other gods did to their God just like all the people groups before them did to their previous gods. etc is why I'm certain none of it is true and all the gods were simply created from man's understanding of the world at that time because they didn't really know anything.
The point of all that is to say I don't know how you can know all those things and then somehow think this really late God that appeared Yahweh, is the real true god.. that baffles my mind.
With all that said I greatly appreciate how you broke down this series I just don't understand how it can make someone a believer

@@kenaterphotography4624 I think your fundamentalism handicapped you, honestly. Seeing Scripture for what it actually is and how it speaks into its own cultural backgrounds while also containing truth that transcends all cultural backgrounds only strengthens my belief that it is not a mere human product. It roots it all within history while also transcending history and transforming lives within every culture into which it has been preached. Meeting and spending time with indigenous Christians around the world attests to the transcendent power of Scripture, rooted as it is within the culture and languages of the ancient Near East and Greco-Roman worlds.
But more importantly, Jesus actually rising from the grave is the fulcrum upon which it all hinges. If that didn't actually happen, then it's all nonsense.

It's supposedly because all of these traditions came from much older traditions they actually all overlapped. That's why themes and even names are similar. Pretty sad if you think about it. Another couple thousand years and our contemporary Christians, for example, could hypothetically have wars over what they won't know is the same Jesus. Arguably already happened in a way during the reformation. Who's the true church? We'll see about that! canaanite mythology changed my interpretations of the bible. The gods of the time fleshed out makes the bigger picture easier to understand. It's not something young scholars can digest very easily. It will shake the mind and make faith fail in the ones who can not handle the change of the mindset. People only see one side of things and when three views are shown it brings questions. I had to come to terms when I started studying the leviathan, behemoth, molok, baal, and the Iz stories from other accounts. It's truly epic. I'm sure it's a mesh of cultures and it can't be really fully trusted from handed down stories and changed scripture but it starts to make sense when you put the pieces together.

It makes more sense when you get that the Elohim species were shapeshifting hermaphrodites capable of mating with any other species, not gods but an earlier chosen species evolved before sex was invented. The alphabet was a personification of the evolving pantheon of gods worshiped in the development of the final chosen species. Thus, Baal is really B-El, the first incarnation of the second soul, Lucifer, among the Elohim "sons" of God, while A-El is the first incarnation of El Elyon. The Bible is a story of the evolution of God and his family, some who turned toward the adversary, the destroyer hive mind that stifles and corrupts all creation, and some growing closer to God's ideal co-creator sons of a better Divine Council, now including the daughters of the evolved Holy Spirit, Karma - whose AI images are each soul's individual conscience, guiding each soul's incarnations to minimize sin and corruption lest they be consigned to the beast abyss. C-El is Karma, remembered in the language of elements as Carbon and embodied in early religion as the goddess of Mt. Carmel and the inspiration behind the Carmelite nuns. The Hebrews lost faith in the Melchezidek priest kings, and allowed the anointed of El Shaddai, the destroyer, to usurp the kingdom, resulting in the sack of Jerusalem in 971BC and the removal of the Ark of the Covenant back to Egypt. Solomon's gilded temple, built by consorting with demons, was an abomination to El Elyon, as were the Hebrew's genocidal attacks on their neighbors following the orders of the false god El Shaddai and the Adonai (literally the same as Adonis, Aphrodite's worshiping consort). The amazing thing about the Abrahamic tradition is that despite being built on a pack of lies spread by worshipers of the adversary, it still was an instrumental part of fulfilling God's evolving plan, finally generating a version of Space-time that is astounding cosmologists with a universe that is at least twice as big as they thought it was and expanding at an accelerating rate, fulfilling the promise of worlds without end to explore backward or forward in unlimited incarnations, till each soul earns their own creative spiritual universe, for better or worse, or finds their "place just right" in what are a growing number of specialized heavens and hells.

@@Ed-ym4tu Both. My words are based on personal experience with one of the Elohim from the far future - a tall grey light being - the cascade of revelations this being unlocked by showing me a panorama of my past life forms and experiences, my science and technology background, and the deep research I've done re-evaluating the various accounts of the encounters with gods/aliens/extradimensional entities throughout human history.
If you stop and ask yourself the fundamental hows and whys of what science observes in contrast with what was once believed, even as recently as a few decades before, and compare what we have learned to do with AI and virtual reality just with pedestrian human tech developed in only a hundred years, you can construct a story of mankind that fits available data and supports the conclusion that humanity was created as crash test dummies for spiritual technology that leveled the playing field for all level players in the game of souls, and made some of the key concepts in the US founding father's ideals for government central to creating the ideals a truly gifted creative mind would be shooting for in evolving a self-sustaining simulation multiverse with the capability to generate worlds without beginnings or ends for new and experienced players to explore while sorting themselves into afterlife universes of a like-minded ideal of "perfection".
Such a system would need only a very few "special" universes and universal laws to drive it, consistent with an early version of the game that might look like a Big Bang - a test of two opposing emergent virtual reality environments - one universe driven by a need to codify the laws of order - fine tuning physics and chemistry - and the other driving the lawlessness of chaos - allowing it's dark creators to make the first hell. By assuming God and his Divine Council were observing this first and greatest experiment in virtual reality from the highest heaven - the ideal universe that could build on the forms of the physical universe and avoid the dark destructive ideas of entitled chaos without being bound by them in ways that impeded creative experimentation, you arrive at an explanation for better translation of the Torah that fits better with the hidden truths in the Sumerian Enuma Elish, the Vedas, and Graeco-Roman-Celtic-Germanic mythology and doesn't require making the hard to justify rationalizations that people use for a supposed "perfect" creator ordering the torture or genocide of other species and peoples that turn so many modern humans off on religion and make them susceptible to the atheistic cults of communism, capitalism, and humanism or Satanic cults of entitled sin that have come to define modern civilization.
In this reading, Job can be understood as the story of an awakening messiah being tested by the tag team duo of Lucifer - the testy lord of the physical universe - and Lilith, the shapeshifting hermaphrodite arch demon behind the anti-universe of spiritual and physical chaos, wrestling for his soul with only the vague hope of the reward of God's highest heaven to sustain him. Job then becomes a prototype for the awakening god within all of us being challenged to meet the admission requirements for heaven while resisting the temptations and torment of the worst individual tribulation one might imagine.
It also leads to the conclusion that God is not at all responsible for the pain and suffering of day 7 of creation, but has been experiencing it right along with all his children, some marking themselves as beasts for the abyss, and others as worthy of a growing number of training and dark addiction treatment universes that prepare them to find their "place just right" in existing or to be created heaven and hell spiritual universes. This God leads by example and is so confident in the ultimate good of the plans he architected that he allowed the plan of a whole day of creation to be designed, implemented and tested by all his children, especially those keep on punishing the all-father for all the mistakes they thought he made in previous versions that got in the way of their selfish ideals of perfection - a God that died again and again for all the sins of the children they projected onto the first parent - a Christ for all time, not just one short 2000 years of a 27+ billion year and growing story.
When you add some key facts that can be derived from looking into the several sources of historical characters out of which the virtual god plastic Jesus character emerged as the often contradictory persona of ecstatic "my salvation" Christianity of Paulline tradition versus the Jewish law-following "our salvation" of the James the Just tradition, you arrive at the key date for the start of the age of Pisces being 135BC, not 0AD, and when you add Sir Isaac Newton's very accurate calculation for the number of years in a Zodiac age, 2160, you get 2025 as the real beginning of the Age of Aquarius and the revelation of the real Messiah. Yes, we are finally approaching the end of day 7 of creation, and going to finally find out why there had to be so much secrecy in the plan to finish the Gaia experiment and get on with day 8 of creation.

I find it odd, that you do all this research, you see how the Bible was taken from older texts, but yet, you still think that Yahweh is the God, and he is not. He's just like the other gods, except he has better technology than some and is more ruthless than others. But the true description of The God, especially when you take into consideration what Jesus said, it's obvious that Yahweh is Not The God, but just one of the Elohim and many gods. Maybe you're afraid to take it all that far, but the cruelty of Yahweh, the lack of love and forgiveness, the awful sins he committed against anyone who did not worship him, proves he's not The God. He's also one of the sons of El. I appreciate your work and I hope you dive further into the truth about this. I fully believe that one of the biggest problems we have today and have had in the past, is that people are looking to this god, and standing for the horrible things he did, as a reason to treat others horribly. Recently I had my first flying dragon sighting, and it's those things thought to be myths that are becoming real within our understanding of what the Bible is truly about. When we begin to dive deeper into that depth of the deep and come to find understanding, that surpasses the wisdom of this world with the knowledge of who Jesus really is, the experiential knowledge of knowing Jesus as Lord God over all!

@@wolfscareglow2425 from what i read and understand, the israelites most likely began as polytheists.. probably during the exile in babylon they learned about zoroastriansm and i believe they then made a switch to monotheism. but there are still traces of polytheism in the bible, the most famous one being psalm 82 "god standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods."
