  • A morning hit-and-run in East Hamilton closed Lawrence Road near Province Street South and disrupted the birthday of a local resident.
The crash happened around 6:15 a.m., and two people from one of the cars involved fled the scene.
CHCH’s Simone Gavros spoke with Chad Upson, the driver whose car was hit. Upson was on his way home after a night shift.
“I’m in a little bit of shock, I was about 30 seconds from home,” Upson said. “It’s my birthday today, and it’s just a weird feeling. I am glad I am okay.”
Upson says he is not injured.
The eastbound vehicle that hit Upson’s collided with a fence and tree on a neighbouring property after hitting his car.
Upson says the driver then fled.
The homeowner spoke with CHCH and said that he getting ready to take out garbage when he heard sounds from the collision.
“I came outside, and the vehicle had taken out my fence and our tree. Two people were exiting the vehicle quickly, and they took off down Lawrence Road,” Sean Sinclair said.
“This is the second time someone has crashed through our fence. The first time was in the winter, and speed was a factor.”
Sinclair added that many drivers don't adhere to the 50 km/h posted speed limit on Lawrence Road.
Lawrence Road is currently closed between Province Street South and Edgemont Street South as police clear the debris. Both cars have been towed from the scene.
Police have yet to confirm the factors that led to the crash.
