    Nice review. As one of the "DW1 Veterans" I enjoyed it.
    RE:Digitize was never considered complete by the standards of the developers too, so you will see that many points you mentioned were fixed in the 3DS Version Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode.
    Very few people realize that Decode is not just a port or an expansion of this very same game, but the story is very different and many of your proposed flaws were actually fixed and the story is way better now.
    For example every map became bigger, there are hidden areas now, the invisible bridge makes it return, the camera works way better, new animations, only to mention a few of the things that got fixed in terms of gameplay.
    As for story: The friendship aspect was strong with Akiho, but looking at more mature characters such as Mirei or Yuuya, you realize that they have a way more realistic approach. But with more backstories to each character, plus the fact that you get to play as Niko, Akiho, Mirei and Yuuya too, the game became completely different in Decode. It's a different atmosphere now and it's better!
    I can't stress out enough how different Decode is. But I probably will in the future :)
    I just don't have a 3DS Video Capture Card.
    Plus you can look forward to Decode, as we are working on it already as we speak. but given that its story is 3 times longer, there are 2 times more digimon, and there's approximately 3.5 times more text than in Redigitize it surely will take a while :)

      Romsstar IT'S YOU! IT'S THE BRINGER OF WATER TO THE THIRSTY MASSES!
      Man, you've got me incredibly hyped for the 3DS version. I know you get this a lot, but myself and a lot of others genuinely appreciate the work you guys are doing. I may have said it in the video, or the description or something, but all I ever wanted was a proper expansion to Digimon World 1, and because of a handful of extremely passionate, talented people, I was able to experience that.
      I was a bit disappointed when the RE:Digitize patch finally dropped, because I lost the sense of waiting for such a grand project. Now I've got the 3DS release to look forward to, and it sounds like it'll be worth the wait.
      If Bamco had any fucking sense, they'd pay you to do a proper Western release. I should probably stop sucking your cock, because I'm getting a dry throat, but I appreciate your comment more than you know.
      Thank you!

      Casposaurus Thanks, I'm glad to hear you appreciate our work, despite the fact that it took so long. If you followed us you will know the reasons for that from the "Legend of Operation Decoded" blog post. Now that we have such a reliable team, and since were also able to port the text from Redigtize to Decode, I can assure you the wait won't be as long as with Redigitize. (It might still take a while, the game is HUGE).
      Decode is absolutely worth the wait, especially if you liked DW1. So many things that went into it, even the Drill Tunnel makes its comeback with our beloved Drimogemon. But what really makes Decode so different, is that while you often felt like Digimon you recruited did nothing in Redigitize, in Decode there are many many subquests now connected to those digimon even after you recruited them. And plus even the very same digimon will behave differently now depending on your prosperity rate by the time you recruited it.
      I gotta say I often hype Decode in the team (most guys haven't played it yet) so whenever someone of our team members says "too bad they didn't do it like this...", I usually come around "they fixed it in Decode".
      Seriously I say it so often it became my catchphrase. That's how GOOD Decode really is.
      In short: If you liked Redigitize you will love Decode. I can find hardly any flaws with it, everything I maybe found annoying or you mentioned in your review got fixed. No game is perfect and if I really wanted to I might find flaws with Decode but well you can do that with any game.
      I could talk about this for hours :D It's too bad people don't realize how different those two games really are, since most people think it's just a port, while it rather deserves the title "sequel". If you have any questions, feel free to ask :)

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  9 лет назад +12

      I'd love to do a comparison video when it comes out, but that whole 3DS capture card hurdle is a big issue.
      I'd also love to have you on for a casual chat about RE:Digitize, the translation process, and just a general sperging-out about Digimon at some point in the future if you're keen.
      I know a lot of things that people ask are covered on the wordpress, but I think it could be a really interesting chat, and you'd have a format to talk about Decode for as long as you wanted.
      Then I could trim it, cut out the racial slurs, and make it available to the public.
      I've wanted to make a short, discussion-based series for a long time, and I think this would be a great fit.
      If you're not interested, don't be afraid to say no, there're no hard feelings!

      I think the reason why the city isint being rebuilt is that they are kinda been built the problem was the digimons just scattered some are stuck In a swamp.... Burried under a snow pile..... Have no sense of direction and can't go back.... Looking for ingredients but suddenly realize if he moves any further he might start a forest fire...... Point is the city is built there's no need for them to expand on it like you said ya can't fit stuff on a umd ...... No matter how great some of the missing stuff are I'd rather have a cut than wait for my digimon to finish pooping also I dint have that mega locked under a quest issue cause my metal greymon died before reaching to mega stats required..... Then my second digimon was actually that plant digimon that becomes Rosemon eventually so my first mega was Rosemon

    • @Chris-bz2rf

  • @maximumrisk2004
    @maximumrisk2004 8 лет назад +37

    What made me nuts in re:digitize is the Evolution system. I love caring and training my Digimon, but especially in later parts of the game you basically spend 10 In-Game Days training to get your stats high enough and then have 2 days to get some progress till it dies and you have to grind up all over again. Not to mention that FULL stats were sometimes barely enough to win. Omnimon with 999 Speed, Offense and Defense and it gets creamed half way through the game, WTF?

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  8 лет назад +10

      +maximumrisk2004 I think it put a bigger focus on attacks and abilities, over raw stats. I also liked the fact that no matter how high my stats were, the game was always a challenge. Means that I actually had to try, and got something out of it, instead of just walking over everyone else. The grind was absolutely real though. You get an Ultimate/Mega, and then quickly scurry around to do as much as you can before it dies.

    • @maximumrisk2004
      @maximumrisk2004 8 лет назад +1

      Casposaurus - The Channel That Hugs Back
      True, it got easier as I gatherd abilities and the ability to tell my Digimon which one to use. So I probably focused on the wrong thing there, still the grinding itself stays tedious.
      I was told that the 3DS version fixed those issues as well as in the PSP version to extend your Digimons lifespan, yet I never managed to get those life expanding items or use them right.

    I never really got a chance to play any of the games from this series, but it does look quite appealing. I only watched a bit of the show back in the day when the first season aired on TV. Something about digital worlds and digital monsters from digital worlds and digimon digivolving in to digital champions. Yeah, fuck, i remember that original opening theme song now too. People kept singing that song to me all the time.

    I feel like if someone heavily modded Digimon world 1, you could make a truly fantastic game.

    • @GuyDude-hk8uy
      @GuyDude-hk8uy Год назад

      If you tweak just the right parameters, there's an absolutely *incredible* game in there for sure. The difficulty imo is that some of the "bad" aspects, like how tedious digivolution requirements and care-mistake timings can be, are in a sense part of the charm for a lot of people. If you could find just the right balance between keeping the mystique, esotericism, and maybe even a bit of the charming jankiness (in non-critical areas) I think you'd have a game easily on par with any mon game ever made.
      As you said though, heavy-modding is the way. I'm a nostalgiafag for sure but I just can't see any modern redesign besting the original game's art in a million years. That and I think it's about finding the gem within the real game, not taking the "good" parts of it and making a new one.

    It's worth noting that this is only Re: Digitize and not Decode, as the game is still in translations by the amazing Romsstar.
    Decode adds a new protagonist, tons of new digimon, two new story arcs, and polishes many of the grips of this game. Decode,
    if ever finished translated, is amazing. Of course, it's only in Japanese-- so yeah. :\ Learn Moonrunes, or struggle through the game.
    To give you an idea, Re: Digitize is only roughly 40% of Decode, so enjoy.

    I actually love the digimon aesthetic, it is almost like a high tech salvador dali painting, I know that it is probably because the PSP didn't have enough power, but I really wish they could make the areas more of this feeling, I feel the concept and concept arts are amazing at showing this, but not the level design itself, like a plain with lots of trains, a desert with things made of glass and PC parts, a forest of signs, etc..

      Not getting the particular digimon you want is what I loved about the original Vpet because it gives a sense of “this is the digimon I get from raising it the way I did”. From combat to taking care of your partner, i’d say they translated the vpet gameplay well into a video game.

    I knew Re:Digitize was a stylistic successor, but didn't realize it was actually a remake. The maps are nice, though town feels way less unique. Just normal buildings in contrast to giant ovens and stuff. So that's disappoiinting, and the lack of the evolving town. That submerged city is gorgeous though. And training being controllable is basically the best addition I can think of.

    Sorry, there were some flaws in the game that just absolutely killed it for me:
    1) The lifespan cycle was just really something I hated. It didn't let you get warmed up and befriend your virtual friend and made the virtual pet part of the game completely useless as it made you treat your "friend" as less than your partner when you know he/she/it won't last for longer than 5 days in their Mega form. This mechanic was the nail that hammered the coffin shut for me and I really couldn't get over it or ignore it, the lifecycle should've been 3-5 times longer as I really started just naming my "partners" Agumon-3 etc.
    2) The "it's been 5 minutes since my last shit so I want a shit" mechanic. Seriously, RPGs are tough as they are, there is no need to make it even dumber by making the game impossible to play without filling your inventory with portable potties. The constant "I need to eat/shit" every couple of seconds pissed the Hell off of me and the time in-between each shit/eating session could've been lengthened 3-5 times again.
    3) The nature of the gameplay story. It rendered all the early forms useless, whenever you get a Digimon you barely get to train them or grow them from their early form, you just train-rush them to their Mega and then train them for a while (because they'll die in 5 days in the Mega form anyways) and then you go and try to complete as much of your goals as possible before your "partner" dies. It's really dumb to ignore the bonding process and the early stages of the Digimon as you barely get to see them since you skip past them with just a couple of training sessions just to get to that Mega form faster before your "friend" dies and you have to do it all over again.
    All in all, the game tried to combine Virtual Pet and RPG genres but despite its depth and some freedom in which the game could have been completed it failed from my POV. The life-span mechanic could've been removed in general and the timing of the each "I need to shit/eat" could've also been improved to at the very least let you play the game a bit since there is a pretty decent game to play somewhere under the endless pile of meats and shits...

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  8 лет назад +8

      +ThatRabbitGuy Wut? Yeah, the virtual pet/RPG thing still needs fine-tuning, but I'm wondering, did you play the first Digimon World on PS1?
      Also, I'm not sure 3-5 times longer life spans would work very well. The story is pretty short, and there aren't too many Digimon to recruit, so while I think it would remove a lot of the tedium of looking after a vpet, it would just make it bland. You'd walk through the story with little issues, and not racing against the clock.
      It's not perfect by any means, but small, individual lifespan tweaks might work better. Say, Agumon has a lifespan of 7 days, while Veemon has a lifespan of 8. That way, unless you're using a wiki, you'll never know the exact life expectancy, and it'll make the vpet element a bit stronger. Maybe it could be based on a stat-roll at the beginning, like Pokemon with individual values, and then various care factors can modify it, so you'd never really know.
      I think I should make a Digimon game.

      pretty sure there are items that increase the life span thou rare also if you dont wanna train too fast chips (aside from devil chips) chips and fruit and a specific fish helps stat gain also dosent reduce the lifespan except for devil chips and abuse the restaurant ....... Mega 2 and mega 3 such as omnimon and a certain giant ass digimon (which is a huge hit box) increase life span more i never had the mega thing an annoyance cause i use the first digimon as means to gather foods thats about it i rarely train my first digimon as i wanted to get a not agumon partner (by the time i do use agumon i already unlock wargreymon)

    The funny thing is that this was actually a pilot, the actual game was released on the 3DS by the name of Digimon World RE:Digitize Decode and is much more complete in terms of story and roster, you still don't get major changes on the village as you progress into the game (you do get to unlock certain new facilities on the village as well as have the opportunity to micro manage a small apartment complex and get the digimon you have recruited to help you at certain points on the story though).

    They didn't need different models of the same city with different buildings on it, they are 3D models, they could just make the city by parts :3 (In fact, is the best approach for perfomance)

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  6 лет назад +1

      I'm not sure what you mean by "Make it by parts" but generally whenever big things change on maps, it's just an alternate version of the same map that you're sent to instead.

    • @Khyze
      @Khyze 6 лет назад

      You answered!!! ^w^, well, let's use as an example Digimon World 1, imagine you have a plain map (The "city" at the begining of the game), it's a whole big image (Lets say 500x500), and then we have a little building of (100x100) theres no need to do a whole big image of 500x500 just to change 100x100 pixels, it could be easily drawn on top of it, in code it would look something very close to this:
      -Draw original image
      *If you unlocked the building -Draw 100x100 building on the map
      Very, very close, Almost like layers on drawing software (And in video editing software?), that same example could be used in 3D with another perspective, is very easy, i just see one problem. Prerendered shadows, if it has that kind of shadows, this whole thing is more complicated than in 2D, but i guess all these big games use real time shadows, so no real problem here.
      When do they really need a different model for the city? well, when it completely changes, for example, all the buildings are destroyed and/or are in different places (But those things are better handled by code than whole 3D maps)
      So... it wasn't really hard to make, maybe they just didn't like the idea (I even never tough about it, Digimon World 1 for me is just a fighting tamagotchi stuff, i didn't really cared about objetives or story, but i eventually unlocked stuff while exploring to find oponents and items on the ground)
      Good video, even my brother like it, he sometimes isn't really into digimon (He just likes what his friends likes?)

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  6 лет назад +1

      I'd say the original Digimon World simply had two background layers and a foreground layer. One flat background layer for the base town, and one layer which was selectively drawn over the top based on what you'd unlocked. That said, they could've absolutely just updated the original background image every single time, I'm honestly not too sure.
      In a 100% 3D space, it's far from as simple as just adding another building, because it'd have to be done in what is effectively 'real time'. Or within the game itself. I'm no expert in 3D modelling by any means, but when you look at game files and how they structure map layouts, maps with big events that change the terrain or structures within those maps are pretty much always separate maps entirely.
      If you've played Ocarina of Time, a good example is the Kokiri Forest. The child version is populated with characters, and the adult version is populated with monsters. They wouldn't just remove the assets based on which character you are, they just teleport you to an entirely different map, already completely configured as it needs to be.
      The assets are reused and only require being stored on the cartridge once, but are called for both maps.
      At least, to my extremely basic understanding.
      I do remember something which was super interesting about 2D games though. If you've ever played any NES/SNES RPG, it's likely you've been inside a house or something. Turns out most most those smaller maps are just on a bigger one, and separated by black space. If you do a walk through walls cheat in FF6, you can end up in other houses/stores from one that's entirely disconnected.
      That's unrelated though.
      It's also easier to control what is rendered, and how it's rendered without adding shit on the fly. Better texture control, easier to skip rendering things that aren't on screen, etc. Granted, there might be a better way to add structures to a 3D map that I'm not aware of, but I'm fairly certain I'm roughly on the mark.

    • @Khyze
      @Khyze 6 лет назад

      I only readed the manga of Ocarina of Time :P, but is still simple, you would need a variable to know which link you are, let's call it "size" if it's equal to "0" you are a child, if it's "1" you are an adult (Or "true" and "false" for "adult"). At the begining of the map (The "load screen") the code will check the variable and decide which "objects" will create (Friends or Foes)
      An old mmo called "Mu Online" has all the 3D models in different files, floor, houses, buildings, barrels, furniture, and all that, doing that could optimize the game by drawing just what is on screen (Imposible if the map is all the models merged into one)
      There may be a video of "Silent Hill" (PS1/PSX) which is a 3D game that handles low specs with a fog, hacking it to erase that fog shows that the walls that are far away of the character dissapear (The fog avoid you to see that), a lot of games use this technique, the best example is Minecraft.

    The game was such a disappointment for me.
    The most glaring issue was the city already being there & staying the same the entire game.
    Digivolution & maxing stats was a bit too easy for my liking,
    the environments were dull,
    recruiting digimon for the city lost the charm of the original game,
    something about the coliseum felt a little less satisfying as well.
    Having several other characters in the world with you also took away from it, the original felt more important, as you were alone stranded in the world with no other human characters.

    Honestly didn't expect you to bring up the city not expanding with buildings as the major issue.
    For me the biggest problem with this game (and the other 'world' games) is dying and having to spend hours training your digimon back up, which can be a tedious process. I'd like re-incarnation to be optional, or for you to be able to shelve digimon away like with the Pokémon PC system.
    I get though, that with the game being short as it is, that it'd be shorter with such a system because you wouldn't have to retrain digimon. But the death system...pads the game out, and not in a good way, in my opinion.
    You might say, "Just go play Pokémon then", but I love digimon. Growing up I preferred the digimon anime way more than the pokemon one. I loved a lot about Digimon World, but there were some clear faults with the game. It's a shame because like this one, it's in my opinion pretty close to being a pretty good game. Just a few tweaks need to be made.
    I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but that's my take lol

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  6 лет назад +2

      It's just the V-pet style, and there's not a lot you could do about it without stripping the game, and making it a generic turn-based deal like some of the other Digimon games. I get that it's not for everyone, but the city is the consistent representation of progress, where even though your Digimon constantly dies, you're constantly building this city up, and it makes your Digimon growth a little easier each time.
      Definitely tedious, but the city thing only really works if you've got high stakes, and with RE:Digitize removing the city, those high stakes do become unnecessarily bland.
      I more or less agree that the v-pet style is annoying and infuriating, but I think it's far more justified and easier to get on board with if you've got a secondary measurement of progression, which is where the original game really shines. Also Next Order, but they did a lot of shit to make it easier in that.
      It also sucks for people like yourself, who don't really dig that V-pet investment, since the Digimon games that removed those features are generally lacking. It's not a fun time out there for Digimon fans, I tell you what.

      It was more about the fact that it was an unexplained factory than a volcano with metal walkways. Volcanos and metal paths above lava are quite common, especially in JRPGs, but to my knowledge, there wasn't any significance or distinction as to why they were there, or what it was. It was an entire factory as well, not simply a series of walkways. I personally think that slight variation makes it intriguing. I get where you're coming from though.

      +Carl Bexell Digimon World DS was pretty solid. I still can't stand Digimon World 4 though, and I've been considering doing a video on it for a while now.

      +Casposaurus - The Channel That Hugs Back please. Do it. I would like to know why you dislike it so much. I might just like it because it has sentimental value for me and was the first ps2 game i ever played.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  8 лет назад

      I played it recently, and it was very slow and grindy. Had a big clunk to it, and it was clearly designed to be played with 3 other people. It's a neat idea, I just found the execution lacking. I also recently got an Elgato, so I can record DW4 now! HAPPY DAYS!
      I'll try to go easy on it :)

      Keegan Del Rio I'm happy that we're finally getting proper Digimon games in the West again, but I'm a bit pissed off there's no news about RE:Digitize for the 3DS. I think Bamco are missing out on some wicked moneys. That said, it's still really fucking cool. I haven't even seen what the game looks like yet, but just the fact that we're getting it is great.

    • @Caspicum

      I might do it, not 100%. All I've got left are Hacker's Memory and Digimon World Championship and that's every Digimon RPG translated to English. I guess I could throw a cheeky little Adventure in there.

      They do age and die, but I think it's easier to get the items which prolong their lifespan. It's been a while since I played it, but I don't remember it being such an issue.

    I tried having angemon line in this game, but it's weird as fuck, angemon and holyangemon both have manly voices and look like humans, but they need to shit too, just imagine it a huge humanoid angel shitting on the plains lol, and seraphimon growls like wargreymon instead of the human voice so it feels like you have a monster instead of an angel

    Where do you place Re:Digitize between World, World 2 and World 3?
    Also, will you review Cyber Sleuth?

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  9 лет назад +1

      Shika SS I place it above all 3. It's a spectacular addition to the -world series, and I honestly think it's the best of the lot. DS games included.
      I might review Cyber Sleuth at some point. Probably not in the short-term though.

    • @ShikaSS
      @ShikaSS 9 лет назад

      I guess Decode would be the best World game, simply because it's a optimized version of Re:Digitize. But yeah, Decode aside, I'd say R:D is the best one, with the worst being World X/4, albeit being a guilty pleasure of mine... At least World 2 was inventive.
      Oh, nice. I honestly think it's one of the best Digimon games.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  9 лет назад

      Yeah, Decode is an expanded version of RE:Digitize, so I dare say that'd be even better. IT HAS VEEMON, YO! THAT SHIT IS AUTOMATICALLY BETTER!
      I played Digimon World 4 two days ago, as I'm capturing footage for a friend who is doing a video on it. I completely agree that it's the worst. Digimon World 2 shits all over 4, and as much as I hate 2, at least it's functional. 4 is messy, and an uphill struggle the entire way. It is the least fun I've had with a Digimon game.
      I'm so glad I'm not covering 4, but if you're interested in a Digimon World 4 video coming out soon, my mate's channel is ruclips.net/user/joeyrazorburn
      I think it'll be interesting, to say the least.
      As for World X, is that a thing? Have I missed a game in the series? IS THERE ANOTHER HORRIBLE ENTRY TO THIS ALREADY QUESTIONABLE SERIES?

    • @ShikaSS
      @ShikaSS 9 лет назад
