"Get my trusty tomato can here, any brand will do..." I died. Thanks for this! I put a knob on the pressure valve/dial/whatever so I had to refill mine and wasn't sure if it would be this easy. Looks like it is!
@@daratone Sorry, Dave, but I have no other jacks nor do I have any experience with other types. Therefore, no videos about them. The same general principles should apply, though.
thanks, I have a jack exactly like this I keep as a back up to my floor jack and had to break it out the other day to grease my ball joints and it would barely pump. Now I know how to maintenance it!
Ronald Clark I used mine to push my axle back so I could get my control arm bolts back in. a bunch of the oil leaked out since I had it on its side. went to do the back control arms and it only move about a half inch. your video helped me out. the man.

You're welcome, c h. With a new jack, you probably won't have to change the oil for years. I only need about 950 more subscribers and I can start making a little money from my videos. But everyone who joins helps, so THANK YOU!
you want to know why Im watching this? I made a total rookie mistake and loosened my bleeder screw so much that it came out all the way and hydraulic fluid sprayed all over me lol...pissed me off but was funny as hell too.
No, it didn't. I bled the air out. It wasn't' low on oil. It's not leaking oil. I took out plunger and the seals seem Ok. I hardly used it in 15 years. Can't think of what else to do. I bought another one yesterday: 12 ton for $30, but I would like to fix this thing. It jacks up with no weight on it, but stops when it has a load. I didn't drain the oil and refill, maybe that? ??? Thanks!
If the seals leaked, I'd expect to see oil coming out around the plunger. How about this: The "up/down" valve isn't closing properly. It could be stuck in one position due to lack of use. Or, there could be a little spec of foreign material in it which holds it open a bit, thus preventing it from jacking up under load. You might try opening the "switch", then pumping several pumps, then closing it and pumping a few times. then repeating. Or you might want to take the up/down switch out. There's probably a ball and spring in there. (Don't lose the ball!!!) It might be deformed or corroded or rusted, thus making it so it doesn't seal properly. It seems to me that the problem must be in this valve! Good luck, and please post the answer to the problem!
I unscrewed the up/down switch. There was a ball but no spring. The ball looked clean. I used a Q-tip to clean it out. Put it back. No change. I emptied the oil and refilled with mineral oil. No change. I don't see any sign or air in ram (no softness). It is a 12 ton Larin BJ12.I am not giving up. I will do more research. Maybe plunger seal replacements
Sure, that'll work. My oil had been in there for ten year or more years, so I thought it might be a good idea to put fresh oil in it. Thanks for the quesion!
I've forgotten the position of the valve. But... I would think it would not make much difference, as the "shaft" is full-down into the cylinder ---therefore there would be very little oil in the cylinder under the shaft. On the other hand, it would make sense to have it open, so that oil anyplace in the jack would be free to flow out. Thanks for the question ---and for watching!
I'm not sure what the "preferred" method is, but here are my thoughts on it. Pump the jack to its full height. Physically turn it upside down and rest the plunger on a bench. Open the Up/Down valve. Press the jack downward, forcing the plunger into the cylinder. As the plunger moves in the cylinder, the oil AND AIR will be forced out into the normal oil reservoir. Once the plunger is in as far as it will go, close the valve. That should get rid of any air in the cylinder. Thanks for watching the video! I'm surprised at the interest it has attracted. I'm not a chemist so I have no idea what antifreeze would do to the various materials of which the jack is made. I DO NOT recommend such a substitution. This is excellent! I really like the homemade dipstick. I tried that with mine and discovered the fluid was even lower than yours was.
Thanks, Dave. It's amazing what one can learn from RUclips videos, isn't it!

Any reason why you can't continue using the old oil in the jack, and just top it off when needed?
Sure, that'll work. My oil had been in there for ten year or more years, so I thought it might be a good idea to put fresh oil in it.

I've recently changed oil my floor jack and bottle jack. The oil in both was pretty dirty.
thank you
You should watch AvE. You'll never worry about the state of your workbench again.
And the oil you got it from an auto part right. If I ask them they should know right?
Yes. Some stores have a product actually labeled "hydraulic jack oil". Ask the clerk for hydraulic jack oil. Thanks for watching!
No mention of what position to have the open/close dial during this operation.

What is the preferred method used for bleeding air out of the oil and or oil compartment?

Which oil is for this jack

I used generic hydraulic jack oil.
